14th Yeşilüzümlü Dastar and Morel Mushroom Festival Welcomes Thousands

The 14th Yeşilüzümlü Dastar and Morel Mushroom Festival brought colour, culture, and community spirit to the Yeşilüzümlü neighbourhood of Fethiye over the weekend. Organised by Fethiye Municipality in partnership with the Yeşilüzümlü Agricultural Development Cooperative, the festival once again highlighted the region’s rich traditions and vibrant local life.

Running through to Sunday, 13 April, the festival featured open market stalls, cultural performances, and evening concerts, drawing thousands of visitors. From traditional drum and zurna shows to delbek performances and folk dancing, the festival buzzed with energy from start to finish.

At the opening ceremony, Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca shared his satisfaction with the public’s enthusiasm:

“The traditional Dastar and Morel Festival is an event that we believe contributes significantly to the regional economy and promotes our local and cultural identity. It’s also an important step in supporting rural development.”

On the opening day, Mayor Karaca was joined by Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ahmet Aras. Together, they toured the artisan stalls and Art Street, engaging with craftspeople and showing support for local businesses.

The festival celebrated the famous morel mushrooms of the region, which were collected from the surrounding forests by locals and sold for between 2,500 and 4,000 TL per kilo. Festival-goers also had the chance to sample morel mushroom soup, along with a variety of local dishes.

Traditional dastar cloths, handwoven by women from the area, shared the spotlight with local foods and handmade crafts, all on display at the bustling market area.

The opening day dazzled attendees with lively performances by folk dance teams and an impressive show by the Ethiopian Acrobatics Group. The powerful rhythms of drums, zurna and delbek added to the festive atmosphere.

Yeşilüzümlü Neighbourhood Headman Cengiz Çatal expressed his thanks to those who supported the festival:

“I would like to thank everyone who participated. This festival is vital for the promotion and growth of our region. We will continue doing our best.”

Watch out later today for a selection of photos from across the festival.

Entry to Forests in High Fire Risk Areas Prohibited Between May 1 and November 30

As part of intensified efforts to prevent wildfires during the 2025 fire season, entry to forests in high fire risk areas in Muğla will be prohibited between 1 May and 30 November 2025. The announcement follows the annual Forest Fire Combat Preparation Meeting held in Muğla, one of Turkey’s most sensitive regions in terms of forest fire risk.

At the meeting, which gathered key officials and stakeholders, last year’s fires were evaluated and detailed strategies for the 2025 fire season were developed. The discussions focused on the coordination of firefighting personnel, equipment readiness, early response capabilities, weather factors, and the vital contributions of local volunteers.

Muğla Forest Regional Director Mustafa Ülküdür delivered a comprehensive presentation covering topics such as early warning systems, personnel and equipment status, post-fire response, public awareness campaigns, and protective measures. He emphasised the importance of rapid intervention and ongoing education.

Muğla Governor Dr. İdris Akbıyık underlined the critical value of forests as ecosystems supporting biodiversity and natural balance.

“Our forests are a national treasure, and with this wealth comes great responsibility. Protecting our forests and being prepared for potential fires requires unity, cooperation, and public awareness,” he said.

Governor Akbıyık highlighted that all government institutions, law enforcement agencies, local administrations, volunteers, the private sector, and the public had come together in previous years to support wildfire prevention and response efforts. This united front will continue in 2025 with even stronger measures.

Key Measures for 2025 Fire Season:

  • Forest Entry Ban: Entry to forest areas at high fire risk will be strictly prohibited from 1 May to 30 November.
  • Patrol Routes: Patrols will be increased across multiple key routes, including:
    • Fethiye: Göcek–İnlice–Yanıklar, Ovacık–Hisarönü–Kayaköy, Aksazlar–Samanlık Bay
    • Bodrum, Milas, Yatağan, Ula, Marmaris, Köyceğiz and surrounding forest roads.
  • Stubble Burning Ban: Burning of stubble, grass, and bushes in and around fields, gardens, and olive groves is banned. Farmers will receive training, and 10-metre mineral soil buffer strips will be required in cereal fields bordering forests.
  • Agricultural Vehicle Rules: All agricultural machinery operators must have at least 2 tons of water and two 6 kg fire extinguishers on hand during harvest.
  • Fire Safety for Seasonal Workers: Beekeepers and shepherds entering Muğla from other provinces will be registered and trained in fire prevention, and must carry fire extinguishers.
  • Entertainment Restrictions: Local governments will regulate the use of fire-risk entertainment tools such as fireworks and parachute lanterns, particularly in forest villages and tourism zones.
  • Traffic Control: Vehicle parking on forest roads will be managed to ensure unhindered access for water tenders and fire trucks.
  • Increased Patrols in Summer: In July and August, patrols will intensify, with law enforcement focusing on deterrent measures in forested areas.

These wide-ranging precautions aim to minimise the risk of forest fires and ensure rapid intervention in the event of an emergency.

Authorities call on all citizens to respect the forest entry ban, follow guidelines, and report any signs of fire or suspicious activity immediately. The cooperation and awareness of the public remain essential in protecting Muğla’s natural heritage.

Armed Attack Incident in Fethiye Reconstructed On-Site Amid Tight Security

A crime scene investigation was conducted in Fethiye in connection with an armed attack that occurred in March 2023, which left three people injured. The on-site reconstruction, supervised by the 2nd High Criminal Court, took place on İnönü Boulevard in the Tuzla Neighborhood, at the location known locally as the Ovacık Bridge.

Five suspects, currently held in separate prisons, were brought to Fethiye under heavy security for the investigation. The detainees had been held in Elmalı, Eşen, Kayseri, and Bolvadin Prisons, and were accompanied by a large number of gendarmerie teams ensuring the safety of the transfer and the site inspection.

The presence of numerous official vehicles and the heightened security measures drew attention from local residents during the court-led investigation.

The original incident in March 2023 involved an unidentified masked individual who arrived on a motorcycle without licence plates and opened fire, injuring A.B. and D.D. in the legs, and F.B. in both the leg and chest. The victims survived, and a total of four suspects were initially detained as part of the investigation.

The case remains ongoing, with the court continuing to examine evidence and testimony related to the attack.

21 injured after two Metrobuses crash at bus stop in Istanbul

At least 21 people, including two children, were injured after a Metrobus crashed into another at a bus stop in Istanbul, Turkish media reported Saturday.

The Metrobus rammed into another metrobus while it was boarding passengers at a stop in the Avcılar district in the direction of Anatolia.

No casualties were reported. Some of the injured were treated on-site while others were taken to nearby hospitals.

“Most of the injured are in good condition. They are being treated at the hospital,” Istanbul Provincial Health Director Abdullah Emre Güner said on social media platform X.

Reports said the accident caused disruptions in the Metrobus lane, a key transit hub used by tens of thousands of commuters daily. The service was later restored on both directions but congestions continue at the stations.

Two bus drivers were taken to the police station to testify, media said.

One person was killed in a similar accident in Istanbul last August when a moving Metrobus lost control and collided with another in the Küçükçekmece district.

Winter relentlessly returns as snow, storms grip Turkey

Just as spring was expected to take hold, Turkey has been hit by an unexpected return to winter, with a powerful cold front bringing snowfall, storms, and heavy rains across much of the country.

On April 11, the Turkish State Meteorological Service issued a yellow alert for 25 provinces due to intense precipitation and strong winds. In Ankara, schools were closed after 15 cm of snow blanketed the capital, accompanied by winds reaching 60 km/h.

In Istanbul, torrential rain and violent winds caused structural damage in several districts, toppling trees and ripping roofs off buildings. Air traffic was disrupted, with planes delayed due to severe wind shear.

Snow also fell across central and western Anatolia, including Uşak, Eskişehir, Kütahya, Bursa, Bolu, and Balıkesir, creating wintry scenes and hazardous roads. Despite the conditions, main routes remained passable thanks to prompt roadwork.

The forecast predicts ongoing cloud cover and rain, with snow and sleet expected in interior regions. The Black Sea coast may experience localized flooding, while frost warnings raise concerns for agricultural damage, prompting farmers to stay alert.

Adana and Kahramanmaraş Nominated for UNESCO Creative Cities Network

The Turkish National Commission for UNESCO has officially nominated the southern cities of Adana and Kahramanmaraş to join the prestigious UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) in 2025.

Adana is seeking recognition in the gastronomy category, highlighting its world-renowned culinary traditions, including its iconic kebab, locally rooted recipes, and geographically marked food products. Meanwhile, Kahramanmaraş is aiming for a place among the Cities of Literature, drawing from its deep-rooted literary culture and legacy of poets such as Nuri Pakdil and Cahit Zarifoğlu.

So far, eight Turkish cities have been accepted into the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. These include Gaziantep, Hatay, and Afyonkarahisar for gastronomy; Istanbul for design; Kütahya and Bursa for crafts and folk arts; and Şanlıurfa and Kırşehir for music.

Selim Terzi, a board member of the Turkish National Commission for UNESCO, confirmed that both nominations were submitted in March, and the final decision is expected to be announced in October or November. Notably, this year’s session will be held in Samarkand, marking a rare instance of the event taking place outside of Paris.

If successful, the inclusion of Adana and Kahramanmaraş would further highlight Türkiye’s rich cultural diversity and creative heritage on a global stage.

Watermelon Prices Shock Shoppers at Fethiye Saturday Market – Citizens Opt for Slices

Watermelon lovers in Fethiye were left stunned this weekend as prices soared at the popular Saturday Market in Pazaryeri Neighbourhood, with whole watermelons becoming a luxury item for many.

Selling at around 80 TL per kilo, a single watermelon—typically weighing between 8 to 10 kilos—now costs between 640 and 800 TL, putting serious strain on household budgets. In response, many citizens are turning to sliced watermelon as a more affordable option.

Shoppers say they simply can’t justify buying an entire watermelon at these prices. A single 3-kilo slice now sells for 240 TL, offering a taste of summer without the steep cost of a whole fruit.

Vendors note that while demand for whole watermelons has dropped, sliced watermelon is selling steadily as families try to adapt to rising food prices amid ongoing economic pressures and declining purchasing power.

As the summer fruit season approaches, many are hoping for a price drop that will once again make watermelon a staple at the family table.

Storks Return to the Same Mosque Minaret for 12th Year, Becoming Local Symbol

In a heart-warming tradition that has endured for over a decade, storks have been building their nests on the minaret of the Düğerek Alaatin Yalçın Mosque in Menteşe’s Düğerek neighbourhood for the past 12 years, becoming a beloved symbol of the area.

Arriving like clockwork in the first week of April, the storks captivate the local community, who look forward to their return each spring. Residents report that the birds have been coming regularly for the past five to six years to hatch and raise their chicks before departing after fledging.

“The storks have been coming for 12 years. When it’s windy, the brushwood and twigs they use for their nests can blow away, but they always rebuild,” said one local. “After hatching, the young storks practise flying before they leave.”

Former neighbourhood headman Mehmet Ortayol shared his delight at the birds’ annual visits, saying: “They come every year in the first days of April. The neighbourhood eagerly awaits them—it’s become a tradition.”

The mosque administration also plays its part by carefully preserving the nests on the dome, ensuring a safe return for the storks each year.

Capturing the beauty of the moment, photographer and professional drone pilot Akın Akgün filmed the returning storks from above. “I was so happy to capture them building their nest on the mosque’s dome,” Akgün said. “I shared the footage on my social media, @akinakinmugla, set to a song by the late Volkan Konak. The post received thousands of likes.”

As the storks continue to return, they offer not just a sign of spring, but a sense of continuity and joy for the people of Düğerek.

Fire at 5-Star Hotel in Marmaris Brought Under Control — Six Hospitalised, Hundreds Evacuated

A fire that broke out early Friday morning at a 5-star hotel on the Marmaris-İçmeler road was swiftly brought under control, with six individuals hospitalised due to smoke inhalation and 680 guests safely evacuated.

The fire started at 05:58 in the hotel’s boiler room, producing heavy smoke that quickly spread through the building. Guests and staff alerted the emergency services, prompting the rapid arrival of firefighting units, forest fire crews, and additional teams from the Aksaz Naval Base Command due to the fire’s escalation and the hotel being at full capacity.

Thanks to the coordinated effort of fire brigade units, AFAD, and health teams, the blaze was contained before it could cause further harm. Hotel rooms were checked individually to ensure all guests were safely evacuated.

Six people affected by the smoke were transported to hospital. Fortunately, their conditions are reported to be stable.

Emergency teams remain on-site as precautionary measures continue and a full assessment of the situation is underway. An investigation into the cause of the fire has also been launched.

Canoeing Among Ice Floes: Thrill-Seekers Take to Thawing Zernek Dam Lake in Van

As temperatures rise in the eastern Turkish city of Van’s Gürpınar district, adventure enthusiasts are seizing a rare opportunity to canoe through the partially thawed Zernek Dam Lake, where melting ice floes create a surreal and striking landscape.

Once entirely frozen during the harsh winter — when temperatures dipped to -20°C — the lake is now transitioning into spring, drawing nature lovers eager to experience the unusual conditions.

Members of a local nature sports club recently transported their canoes to the lake and paddled through the drifting ice, navigating a truly one-of-a-kind route.

“We’ve done many outdoor activities in different locations before, but this was our first time canoeing through ice floes,” said club member Mesut Gül, expressing excitement over the unique setting they had been waiting weeks to explore.

Fellow adventurer and extreme sports enthusiast Muhlis Kaya described the experience as unforgettable. “It was an incredible experience. Watching the ice break apart and drift while paddling through was mesmerizing,” he said.

Beyond the thrill, Kaya highlighted a deeper purpose behind the event — to raise awareness about the protection of water resources and natural beauty, while also promoting tourism in the region. “We want to show people how stunning and valuable these landscapes are. We encourage others to come and experience it for themselves,” he added.

The event underscores how outdoor recreation can both celebrate nature and inspire conservation efforts, offering a fresh perspective on the seasonal transformation of Zernek Dam Lake.

Meta is fined by Turkey after refusing to restrict content on Facebook and Instagram

Meta said it has been hit with a hefty fine for resisting Turkish government demands to limit content on Facebook and Instagram.

Meta is fined by Turkey after refusing to restrict content on Facebook and Instagram

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government has been trying to restrict opposition voices on social media after widespread protests erupted following the arrest of Istanbul’s mayor, who’s a key rival.

“We pushed back on requests from the Turkish government to restrict content that is clearly in the public interest, and have been fined by them as a consequence,” the company said in a statement.

The social media company did not disclose the size of the fine, except to say it was “substantial” and did not provide any more details about the content in question. The Associated Press has approached the Turkish government for comment.

“Government requests to restrict speech online alongside threats to shut down online services are severe and have a chilling effect on people’s ability to express themselves,” Meta said.

In recent years the Turkish government has increasingly sought to bring social media companies under its control. When protests erupted following the March 19 arrest of opposition Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, many social media platforms such as X, Instagram and Facebook were blocked.

Inflation eases in Turkey although Trump tariffs pose economic risks

Turkey’s annual inflation rate eased to 38.1% in March, down from 39.1% in February, marking the 10th consecutive month of decline and the lowest reading since December 2021, according to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute. The figure also came in below analyst expectations of 38.9%.

Inflation eases in Turkey although Trump tariffs pose economic risks

Slower price increases were seen in key categories including clothing and footwear (14.8%), transport (21.6%), household equipment (32.4%), health (42%), and restaurants and hotels (43.4%). However, food and non-alcoholic beverage inflation ticked up slightly to 37.1%.

On a monthly basis, inflation rose by 2.5% in March, up from 2.3% in February.

Despite the downward trend, Turkey’s inflation remains well above global averages. The Central Bank has already begun easing monetary policy, lowering its key interest rate to 42.5% in early March. However, upside risks remain, including a new 10% US baseline tariff, which could complicate future rate decisions.

Pre-Holiday Inspections Carried Out in Muğla

Muğla Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry teams conducted extensive inspections ahead of the Ramadan Feast, meticulously checking hygiene, freshness, and pricing in production facilities and sales points of sweets, chocolates, sugar and sugary products, patisseries, and bakery items.

Given the increased consumption of sweets and sugary products during the Ramadan Feast, officials paid special attention to expiration dates, storage conditions, and label information at production and sales points. These inspections aimed to ensure food safety and provide consumers with healthy and reliable products.

Muğla Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, Seyfettin Baydar, commented on the inspections carried out across 13 districts, stating, “Our Ministry oversees the inspections of food products produced and sold in our country. These inspections are conducted according to monthly programs prepared on a provincial basis, as well as annual inspection programs set by our Ministry. Protecting consumer health and ensuring a reliable food supply at every stage of the food chain remains our Ministry’s responsibility.”

Fethiye Welcomed Holidaymakers with Alternative Tours

With the Ramadan holiday extended to nine days, tourism activity in Fethiye increased, and the open hotels reached near full capacity.

TÜRSAB Western Mediterranean Regional Representative Board President Özgen Uysal stated that all necessary preparations for alternative tours had been completed, offering visitors a variety of experiences. “We made all the arrangements for alternative tours, including horseback tours, diving tours, paragliding, jeep safaris, and boat tours,” he said.

However, Uysal also noted that many smaller hotels in the region had not yet opened. “The last-minute announcement of the nine-day holiday did not benefit our sector much. Hotels that remained closed could not adjust to this holiday schedule. Additionally, travelers were late in making reservations,” he explained.

Despite this, larger hotels in Fethiye that opened early operated at nearly full capacity. Uysal assured that agencies had finalized their plans, and from April 1 onwards, visitors were able to enjoy various alternative tours. “We were ready to welcome all holidaymakers and showcase the beauty of our region,” he added.

Concluding his remarks, Uysal wished a happy and peaceful Ramadan holiday to tourism professionals, visitors, and the people of Fethiye.

Heavy Traffic Hits Muğla Ahead of Holiday Break

After the Ramadan holiday was extended to nine days, traffic congestion increased in Muğla, one of Turkey’s key tourism destinations. Citizens traveling for the holiday formed long vehicle queues, especially on the Aydın-Muğla highway.

With the rise in traffic density, the Muğla Provincial Police Department Traffic Registration and Inspection Branch Directorate, along with public order teams, intensified their inspections. To prevent accidents, authorities warned drivers to obey speed limits, wear seat belts, and remain cautious on the roads.

During the inspections conducted at the entrances to Muğla and along the main routes, officials implemented various precautions to ensure a safe journey for drivers and passengers. The teams stated that inspections would continue uninterrupted throughout the holiday period.

Foreigners, locals unite to keep Turkey’s coastal town Kaş clean

A small environmental initiative started by two foreign residents in Turkey’s coastal town of Kaş in Antalya has grown into a group of about 150 volunteers dedicated to cleaning up nature spots in the area.

Russian Andrey Bobylev and Frenchman Paul Moisson, who moved to Kaş during the COVID-19 pandemic, began picking up litter while hiking. Their efforts soon attracted other volunteers, leading to the formation of “Birlikte Temizleyelim-Kaş” (“Let’s Clean Together-Kaş”), which now includes many local and foreign residents.

The group, whose members range in age from 10 to 60, gathers at least once a week to collect litter while walking through Kaş’s historical sites, beaches, forests, scenic overlooks, harbours and roadsides.

In an interview on Tuesday, Bobylev told Anadolu Agency (AA) that the idea of environmental cleanup took shape after meeting Moisson.

“We started about four years ago, and the group grew through friends from Russia and social media,” Bobylev said. “We clean for nature, for Kaş, for people, with the motto, ‘It’s not my trash, but it is my town.’ Our group includes people from Turkey, Russia, the U.S. and the U.K., all working together to keep the environment clean.”

Since its inception, the group has collected approximately 4,000 large garbage bags of waste, mostly consisting of beverage bottles, plastic water bottles and snack packaging, Bobylev said.

Environmental volunteer Sinem Sunter emphasized the collaborative nature of their work.

“We first identify the most polluted areas and gather there to clean,” she said. “So many things that belong in trash bins end up in nature. People come to these beautiful spots to enjoy the view but leave their garbage behind. Nature doesn’t deserve this. If everyone simply carried their trash out, there wouldn’t be a problem. We’ve covered many areas of Kaş and collected thousands of bags of trash.”

Nikita Vatutin, another volunteer, highlighted the impact of their efforts.

“It feels meaningful to do this,” Vatutin said. “If we could also recycle the waste we collect, it would be even better. Every week, we gather about 30 bags of trash. Please, let’s keep our city and environment clean.”

Cappadocia added to prestigious wine route

Turkey’s Cappadocia region in the central city of Nevşehir, famed for its fairy chimney volcanic cones, has been included in the Iter Vitis Wine Route, one of the cultural routes of the Council of Europe.

This development follows the application carried out by the Ahiler Development Agency, aiming at accelerating regional and local development.

Launched in 1987, the European Council’s Cultural Routes program aims to highlight and enhance the shared heritage of European countries while raising awareness about common cultures and values. As of 2024, the program features 48 cultural routes.

These routes not only promote Europe’s cultural diversity but also offer visitors a deeper connection to regional heritage. Furthermore, projects undertaken within these cultural routes contribute to local economies and cultural awareness, boosting the tourism potential of the destinations.

The Iter Vitis Route stands out as a significant path reflecting Europe’s agricultural landscape tied to viticulture and the historical development of this culture.

Focused on vineyards, traditional production techniques and local winemaking heritage, the route aims to preserve and promote regional viticultural culture. It also strives to establish these areas as sustainable tourism destinations and educational paths.

Thus, the inclusion of the Cappadocia region in the renowned route will enhance the global recognition of the region’s rich winemaking heritage and provide greater visibility for local producers.

Additionally, it will offer significant collaboration opportunities to preserve the cultural aspects of viticulture, support sustainable tourism and launch new projects for rural development.

Nevruz Celebrated with Enthusiasm at Yörük Tent in Fethiye

The arrival of spring was welcomed with lively Nevruz celebrations at the Yörük Tent on Çalış Beach in Fethiye. Organized by the Fethiye Yoruk Turkmen Association, Seydikemer Yörük Turkmen Association, and Fethiye Municipality, the event revived traditional Nevruz customs and showcased Yörük culture.

As part of the festivities, the Nevruz fire was lit, with participants jumping over the flames to symbolise renewal and cleansing from bad energies. Old Turkish traditions such as forging iron on an anvil and egg-clashing were also performed, symbolising freedom and unity. Additionally, eggs were boiled with onion peels in a traditional ritual marking the diversity of nature.

Speaking at the event, Fethiye Yörük Turkmen Association President Ramazan Kıvrak highlighted Nevruz’s deep significance in Turkish history and its connection to nature. “Nevruz represents the revival of nature and the fertility of the soil. We are happy to celebrate this special day in Fethiye and Seydikemer.”

Toros Yörüks Turkmen Federation President İsmail Uzunoğlu also emphasised the importance of preserving these customs. “Nevruz marks both the Turks’ emergence from Ergenekon and the arrival of spring. Despite this year’s celebrations being more limited due to Ramadan, we still forged iron, lit fires, and clashed eggs. We will continue to keep our traditions alive,” he stated.

The Nevruz fire symbolises the arrival of spring and the awakening of nature. Jumping over the flames represents purification and a fresh start.

Forging iron represents the Turks’ emergence from Ergenekon and their path to freedom. It is a key symbolic ritual during Nevruz celebrations.

Egg-clashing symbolises friendship, solidarity, and abundance, as well as the renewal of life and nature.

This traditional practice gives the eggs a natural colour, celebrating the vibrancy of spring and nature’s diversity.

Nevruz in Fethiye continues to be an important event, bringing the community together to honour their heritage while welcoming the new season with hope and joy.

Morel Mushroom Prices in Fethiye Hit Record Highs

The price of morel mushrooms in Fethiye has skyrocketed to 3,000 TL per kilo due to insufficient rainfall, significantly reducing harvest yields. Known for their unique flavor and health benefits, these rare mushrooms remain in high demand despite the record-high prices.

Morel mushrooms, a spring delicacy, are usually abundant in Fethiye, but this year’s drought has led to a shortage, causing a surge in market prices. Mushroom collectors report struggling to find adequate supplies, further driving up costs. Despite the steep price, restaurants and private buyers continue to seek out this prized ingredient.

Highly valued for their rich nutritional content and antioxidant properties, morel mushrooms remain a favorite among gourmets and chefs. Experts stress the importance of sustainable practices to preserve this natural treasure amid changing climate conditions.

Mandarin Oriental Bodrum to Expand with 800 Million TL Investment

A new development has emerged regarding the 800 million TL hotel project in Muğla-Bodrum, as the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change announced the start of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process.

The project, led by Asta Cennetköy Tourism and Management Inc., is not a new hotel but an expansion of the existing Mandarin Oriental Bodrum. The company, a partnership between Astaş Holding and Pasha Holding, plans to increase the hotel’s capacity from 130 to 220 rooms.

Speaking about the expansion, Asta Cennetköy Tourism and Management Inc. Chairman Vedat Aşçı stated, “We plan to build 90 new rooms on the land next to the hotel. If everything proceeds as planned, we aim to complete the investment within two years.”

Aşçı emphasized that Mandarin Oriental Bodrum is among the most luxurious hotels in both the Mediterranean basin and the world, highlighting its strong guest demand and high pricing standards. He also noted that 80% of guests arrive by private jet, significantly contributing to Bodrum’s airport and hospitality sector.

Mandarin Oriental Bodrum, the brand’s first hotel in Turkey, opened in 2014 with a 650 million euro investment by Astaş Holding. The resort, located on 600 acres in Göltürkbükü Cennet Bay, continues to be a landmark in luxury hospitality.

Protests in London Against the Detention of Ekrem İmamoğlu

The detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and 105 others was met with protests in London, organized by the CHP UK Union. The demonstration took place in front of the Turkish Embassy on March 20 and was supported by EMEP, Day-Mer, and the Turkish Workers’ Party, alongside artists, educators, and hundreds of citizens.

Protesters carried banners and chanted slogans such as “Shoulder to Shoulder Against Fascism,” “Justice, Law, and Justice,” and “Resignation, Tayyip!” demanding an end to what they called arbitrary rule. Young participants and members of community centers across London joined in, creating a strong and energetic atmosphere.

During the demonstration, the National Anthem, the 10th Year Anthem, and the Izmir Anthem were sung in chorus. CHP UK Union President Mehmet Şar and British Alevi Federation Founding President İsrafil Erbil left a black wreath at the embassy entrance bearing the words “Sovereignty Unconditionally Belongs to the Nation.” The peaceful protest lasted for about two hours.

Protesters expressed deep concern over the increasing threats to democracy and the rule of law in Turkey. They condemned the detentions as an attack on democratic values and accused the government of using baseless terrorism and corruption charges to intimidate the opposition. The recent arrests of 37 more individuals for “provocative” social media posts were also highlighted as a severe threat to freedom of expression.

The Turkey Democracy Platform strongly condemned the detentions, calling on international human rights organizations and democratic nations to take action. Their statement emphasized that democracy and human rights in Turkey are under serious threat and urged citizens to stand together against injustice. The protest ended with chants of solidarity: “Either all together or none of us!”

Turkish Lira Hits Record Low Amid Political Turmoil

Turkey’s lira tumbled to an all-time low of 42 per dollar on Wednesday before recovering to 37.665, marking a 2.6% decline. The slump came after authorities detained Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, President Tayyip Erdoğan’s main political rival, in what the opposition called “a coup attempt.”

The benchmark stock index fell nearly 9%, its steepest drop in four years, while bond markets also weakened. Analysts warned that ongoing political crackdowns and legal probes against opposition figures are heightening investor concerns. Commerzbank’s Tatha Ghose noted that a lira rate of 40 per dollar could become too inflationary for Turkey’s central bank to tolerate.

No matter what name you call it by, this shared festivity has brought communities together across countries and regions for more than 3,000 years” ~ Audrey Azoulay UNESCO Director-General

Nevruz, meaning “new day”, is an ancestral festivity marking the first day of spring and the renewal of nature. It includes rituals, ceremonies and cultural events, as well as the enjoyment of a special meal with loved ones. New clothes are worn, visits are made to family and friends, and gifts, especially for children, are exchanged.

Celebrated for over 3000 years in the Balkans, the Black Sea Basin, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East and other regions, it promotes values of peace and solidarity between generations and within families as well as reconciliation and neighbourliness.

Thousands of people mark Nevruz with colourful rituals across Türkiye, especially in the southeastern and eastern parts.

Nevruz is marked as part of Kurdish, Iranian and Eurasia traditions in the second half of March as the first day of spring with colourful celebrations.

In many cities in Iran, people also jump over small bonfires with a belief of trying to purify themselves against evil and misery and celebrated the beginning of the New Year according to the country’s official Solar Hijri calendar.

Similar festivities are also held in Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

Nevruz is officially registered on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List, and the United Nations General Assembly has also declared March 21 as “International Nevruz Day.”

Every year on 18 March, Türkiye observes Çanakkale Victory and Martyrs’ Day, paying tribute to fallen soldiers and commemorating a pivotal World War I triumph. This year marks the 110th anniversary of Türkiye’s naval victory on the Gallipoli Peninsula at the outset of the war.

The occasion is honoured with a traditional ceremony at the Martyrs’ Monument, which stands over the Dardanelles Strait—a lasting symbol of Ottoman resilience against the Allied forces.

This day honours Türkiye’s successful defence against Allied battleships attempting to seize control of the strait, bombarding Turkish forts along both its Asian and European shores in Çanakkale.

It was a crucial moment in the formation of the Republic of Türkiye, and each year, the nation pauses to remember the extraordinary bravery and dedication of the soldiers who fought for Türkiye’s freedom in 1915.

A new leader

The Gallipoli campaign not only stirred a strong sense of Turkish nationalism but also brought forth a new leader, Mustafa Kemal.

At the time, Mustafa Kemal was a lieutenant colonel in the Ottoman army. When the ANZACs (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) landed on the Sari Bair range at midnight on 25 April, the Turkish forces were unprepared for the attack.

As commander of the 19th Division, Mustafa Kemal received a late-night order from his superiors to deploy a battalion against the advancing ANZAC forces at 6:30 am. However, by that time, the ANZACs had already begun scaling the narrow hillside of Chunuk Bair, a critical strategic point for the Allies. Military experts suggest that had they secured Chunuk Bair, the Allies would have gained a decisive advantage in the Gallipoli campaign.

Yet, Mustafa Kemal’s tactical brilliance made it difficult for the Allied forces to gain ground. Beyond directing his battalion, he personally confronted the enemy lines—a bold decision that not only defined his military career but also played a pivotal role in shaping the future of modern Türkiye.

Muğla to Experience Freezing Temperatures from March 19 to March 24

The Meteorology 4th Regional Directorate Regional Forecast and Warning Center has issued a weather warning, stating that Muğla will experience a significant temperature drop from March 19 to March 24, 2025.

According to the latest meteorological assessments, a cold and rainy weather system originating from the Balkans is expected to affect the region, which includes Antalya, Muğla, Isparta, and Burdur. Temperatures are forecasted to drop sharply by 10 to 15°C, falling below seasonal norms.

Rain and showers are expected in coastal areas, while inland regions may see sleet and snowfall starting Wednesday. The sudden temperature drop, combined with these weather conditions, could lead to agricultural frost, posing a risk to crops in the region.

Authorities urge residents, especially those involved in agriculture, to stay updated on forecasts and warnings issued by the General Directorate of Meteorology of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change. Precautions should be taken against possible snowfall, frost, and icing events.

Meteorology teams brave harsh winter to maintain weather stations

n the snow-covered mountains of eastern Türkiye, meteorology teams endure harsh winter conditions to keep vital weather stations operational. Despite heavy snowfall, freezing winds, and temperatures dropping to –35°C, dedicated technicians navigate rugged terrain to repair and maintain meteorological equipment across Erzurum, Erzincan, Ardahan, and Bayburt provinces.

These teams work year-round, servicing airports, meteorology radars, radiosonde stations, and Automatic Meteorological Observation Stations (OMGİ), ensuring uninterrupted weather monitoring.

Selçuk Aksak, a 56-year-old technician working at Palandöken Ski Center, highlighted the team’s commitment: “We oversee 70 observation stations, two airports, and a meteorology radar in the Kargapazar Mountains. If a station fails, we must repair it within 24 hours, no matter the conditions.”

While major repairs take place in summer, winter operations remain challenging. With roads often blocked by deep snow, reaching stations requires trekking through snowdrifts up to 1.5 meters deep while carrying heavy equipment.

“In winter, when vehicles can’t pass, we carry laptops, toolkits, and even batteries on our backs,” Aksak added. “We do this to ensure people can ski safely, travel without disruptions, and fly without delays.”

Istanbul air pollution spikes as desert dust approaches

Istanbul residents are currently facing a significant air pollution threat, with dust storms from North Africa expected to affect the city for a week. Monitoring stations across the city are providing real-time data, revealing varying levels of air pollution in different districts.

As of Friday evening, Göztepe recorded the highest pollution levels, raising concerns among local residents. In contrast, Kumköy registered the cleanest air, followed by other districts with relatively better air quality, including Sarıyer, Arnavutköy, Silivri, and Maslak. These differences highlight the varying air quality across the city.

The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, along with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Environmental Protection and Control Department, are actively monitoring pollution levels. Air quality is classified into six categories: Good (0-50), Moderate (50-100), Sensitive (100-150), Unhealthy (150-200), Poor (200-300), and Hazardous (300-500).

While some areas experience relatively cleaner air, others face moderate pollution. Districts such as Alibeyköy, Beylikdüzü, Kadıköy, Üsküdar, and Kartal fall into the moderate category, indicating tolerable but not ideal air quality.

Areas such as Göztepe D-100, Aksaray, Bağcılar, Esenyurt, and Tuzla are experiencing higher pollution levels, with residents in these neighborhoods more vulnerable to health risks, particularly those with respiratory conditions.

Authorities are urging the public to stay informed about air quality updates, especially with the arrival of Saharan dust, which could worsen pollution levels. Ongoing monitoring and awareness are crucial in managing the impact of air pollution on public health.

Istanbul’s population shifts westward to peripheral districts

A recent socio-economic report on Istanbul’s districts has highlighted a significant demographic shift, with the city’s population gradually moving westward toward its peripheral areas. According to the findings, Beylikdüzü has experienced a 67 percent population increase over the past decade, while central districts such as Fatih, Kadıköy, and Şişli have seen a decline.

Istanbul, home to nearly 20 percent of Türkiye’s population, is undergoing a rapid redistribution of residents. The report indicates that districts on the outskirts, such as Esenyurt, Küçükçekmece, Pendik, and Ümraniye, now house approximately a quarter of the city’s population.

Meanwhile, traditional urban centres are experiencing population decreases, with Fatih alone seeing a 16 percent drop.

A representative from the organisation that conducted the study noted this emerging trend: “We observe a consistent population decline in areas like Fatih, Kadıköy, and Şişli, while the outskirts are expanding rapidly.”

The report also highlights changes in household structures. Single-person households are increasingly common, now making up one in four homes, particularly in Kadıköy, Şişli, and Bakırköy. This urban transformation reflects broader socio-cultural shifts, according to the representative.

“In the outer districts, where population growth is higher, fertility rates tend to be significantly above average. This suggests that cultural norms continue to play a more decisive role in population growth than economic factors.”

The districts with the highest birth rates include Esenyurt, Sultanbeyli, Sultangazi, and Sancaktepe, while the lowest rates are observed in Bakırköy, Şişli, Beşiktaş, and Kadıköy.

Despite Istanbul’s status as Türkiye’s economic powerhouse, contributing nearly a third of the country’s GDP, the report highlights persistent income inequality. Istanbul ranks among the world’s largest cities with the most severe income disparities, with Sultanbeyli and Sultangazi facing the greatest financial challenges.

Even within the same district, significant economic divides are evident. In areas like Beykoz and Sarıyer, stark contrasts in income levels exist, with the wealthiest and most economically disadvantaged living side by side.

The study further classifies Istanbul’s districts based on their economic functions. Şişli, Kadıköy, and Fatih remain prominent centres for trade and finance, while Esenyurt and Tuzla have emerged as industrial hubs.

14 March 2025 – Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya has announced that 39 chief civil inspectors have been deployed across Türkiye’s 81 provinces to oversee the enforcement of the Animal Protection Law. The inspectors will assess how governorships, municipalities, and relevant institutions are managing the stray dog issue.

Yerlikaya stated that the inspectors have been given 14 days to conduct on-site evaluations of the measures implemented since the law and its regulations came into force on 2 August. Their role includes reviewing past actions, identifying shortcomings, and ensuring that authorities comply with legal requirements.

The minister also raised concerns about some municipalities relocating stray dogs to other regions instead of placing them in shelters. Complaints about this practice have increased, and Yerlikaya warned that any municipality found to be engaging in such activities would face administrative and judicial investigations.

Additionally, the Ministry of Interior will continue to investigate cases where individuals are injured or killed in attacks by stray animals, ensuring that responsible institutions are held accountable. Yerlikaya reiterated the government’s commitment to preventing such incidents and enforcing compliance with the law.

A spokesperson for Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca told Fethiye Times:

“Two inspectors visited Fethiye Municipality and inspected the animal shelter. Fethiye Municipality will never euthanise stray animals, as the Mayor has promised multiple times before. If stray dogs pose a threat to people and a complaint is made, they are taken to an animal shelter, as required by law.”

Mayor Aras’s Message for International Women’s Day

Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ahmet Aras marked March 8, International Women’s Day, with a powerful message highlighting the historical struggle and resistance of women for equality and justice.

In his statement, Mayor Aras emphasised that the fight for women’s rights has been ongoing for centuries, referencing the 1857 strike of women workers advocating for their rights. He noted that this struggle continues today, with millions of women seeking justice, equality, and freedom.

“Women’s struggle is also the struggle of a democratic, secular, and contemporary Turkey”

Mayor Aras underlined that the rights women have today were not granted as favours but were won through persistent resistance. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting women’s struggle, stating:

“The fight for women’s rights is also the fight for a democratic, secular, and contemporary Turkey. Women’s determination to step beyond societal constraints continues despite all obstacles. As the Mayor of Muğla Metropolitan Municipality, I will always stand with women in this struggle. I am honoured to be part of a movement that aims for a revolutionary transformation in local government policies.”

“As women’s voices rise, the world will be a fairer, freer place”

Mayor Aras also addressed the ongoing challenges women face, including inequality, violence, and discrimination. He stressed that true freedom and safety for all can only be achieved in a society where women are free and equal.

“We manage our city together with women to ensure that Muğla is a place where everyone can live with dignity and equality. Our policies are rooted in equality, empowering women economically and increasing their role in decision-making. Inspired by our nation’s great leader, Atatürk, we are committed to building a city and a future where women are at the heart of life. Because women’s struggle for rights is a collective struggle for all of us. As women’s voices rise, the world will be a fairer, freer place.”

Concluding his message, Mayor Aras congratulated all women on International Women’s Day, recognising their ongoing fight for justice and equality.

“On the Trail of Women” Painting Exhibition Opened at Erasta AVM

Fethiye Municipality Science High School inaugurated the “On the Trail of Women” painting exhibition at Erasta AVM, celebrating March 8th, International Women’s Day. The exhibition, showcasing portraits of influential women throughout history, was created through the collaborative efforts of students and teachers.

Visitors to the exhibition were treated to more than just visual art, as students also performed piano and violin pieces, adding a musical dimension to the event. The exhibition will remain open until Monday, offering art enthusiasts the opportunity to witness the tribute to pioneering women.

Portraits of Pioneering Women at the Exhibition

Fethiye Municipality Science High School Visual Arts Teacher Ayşe Onur shared insights into the inspiration behind the exhibition:

“Today is March 8th, International Women’s Day. We wanted to paint women, but how? We chose pioneering women who contributed, worked, and left their mark on history. We started with the mother goddess Cybele, a significant figure in Anatolian culture, symbolising our journey from a matriarchal to a patriarchal society. Then, we depicted women who made history in various fields such as opera, painting, music, sports, and literature, particularly during the Republic period. Additionally, we reinterpreted some iconic female portraits from world art history. This exhibition is a special project that brings together both my own works and those of my students. Our students have been preparing for the past month, while my own works date back even further.”

A Young Artist’s Perspective

İdil Perçin, a 9th-grade student at Fethiye Municipality Science High School, expressed her excitement about contributing to the exhibition:

“I chose to paint a portrait of Afet İnan, the first Turkish sociologist, historian, and academician, who was also Atatürk’s adopted daughter. I have been passionate about painting since I was four years old, and I also study painting at the Science and Art Center. Although my future career plans are in a different direction, painting will always be a part of my life.”

The “On the Trail of Women” exhibition stands as a powerful artistic tribute to women who have shaped history, celebrating their achievements and inspiring future generations.

In other news, women took to the streets of cities across Europe, Africa, South America and elsewhere to mark International Women’s Day with demands for ending inequality and gender-based violence.

On the Asian side of Istanbul, Türkiye’s biggest city, a rally in Kadıkoy saw members of dozens of women’s groups listen to speeches, dance and sing in the spring sunshine. The colourful protest was overseen by a large police presence, including officers in riot gear and a water cannon truck.

The government of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan declared 2025 the Year of the Family. Protesters pushed back against the idea of women’s role being confined to marriage and motherhood, carrying banners reading “Family will not bind us to life” and “We will not be sacrificed to the family.”

Critics have accused the government of overseeing restrictions on women’s rights and not doing enough to tackle violence against women

Adana Nominated for UNESCO Creative Cities Network in Gastronomy

Adana has officially been placed on the candidate list for the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) in the field of gastronomy, marking a significant step in the city’s efforts to gain international recognition for its rich culinary heritage. Adana Mayor Zeydan Karalar announced the development, highlighting the cultural and historical importance of the city’s cuisine.

Strengthening Adana’s UNESCO Application

Mayor Karalar stated that Adana, known for its commercial, agricultural, industrial, historical, and artistic significance, is also home to one of the world’s most distinctive culinary traditions. Despite previous attempts, the city had not yet been included in the UCCN gastronomy category.

“While preparing the application, we collaborated with various institutions and organizations in the city to strengthen our file. We had been included in the national list twice before, but now, with significant contributions from our governor and other stakeholders, we have submitted a stronger application. Our file was voted on last Friday and was accepted for Paris on Monday, leading to Adana’s official nomination,” Karalar explained.

Potential Impact on Tourism

The nomination is expected to have a positive impact on Adana’s tourism sector, particularly in the area of gastronomic tourism, which has become a major trend worldwide. Karalar emphasized that the city’s history, art, and natural beauty, combined with its renowned cuisine, could position Adana as a top destination for food tourism.

“This is a major step in establishing Adana as a recognized gastronomic city. We aim to turn Adana into a tourism hub, and we believe that gastronomy will be a key driver in achieving this goal. We hope to create a strong gastronomic tourism trio alongside Hatay and Gaziantep,” he said.

Looking Ahead: The UNESCO Decision

The next stage in Adana’s UNESCO bid involves a voting process in Paris. If successful, Adana will officially join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in gastronomy, which could lead to a significant increase in tourism.

Karalar pointed to the steady rise in visitor numbers, stating that domestic tourism in Adana has grown from almost nonexistent to nearly 1 million visitors, while international tourist numbers have risen from 60,000-65,000 to over 300,000. He noted that these figures could have been even higher if not for challenges such as the pandemic and recent earthquakes.

Adana’s Cultural and Gastronomic Events

Karalar also highlighted major cultural and food-related events that have contributed to tourism growth, including the Orange Blossom Carnival, the Taste of Adana Festival, and the International Adana Golden Boll Film Festival. He reaffirmed his commitment to promoting the city’s rich cultural and culinary heritage.

“Since I took office, we have made significant efforts to showcase Adana’s beauty and culture. I have personally overseen promotional activities that had not been done before, and I will continue to do so. For us, Adana comes first,” Karalar concluded.

Air pollution exceeds safe limits for 204 days in Türkiye’s Antalya

In Antalya, southwestern Türkiye, air pollution levels surpassed safe limits for 204 days in 2024, significantly exceeding the annual threshold of 35 days, according to air quality measurements taken throughout the year.

Associate Professor Güray Doğan from Akdeniz University warned that air pollution in the city is becoming increasingly severe, with traffic congestion being the main contributing factor.

“Unfortunately, the situation is worsening day by day. The primary cause is traffic, and pollution levels exceeded the limit for more than half the year,” Doğan stated.

Traffic and Environmental Factors Worsening Air Quality

Antalya, known as a major tourism hub, has also been affected by reduced rainfall and the decline of transitional seasons, exacerbating pollution levels. Data from an air quality monitoring station in the city center revealed that air pollution was above acceptable levels for most of the year.

The study identified that:

• Traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours, is the leading source of pollution.

• Vehicle emissions from highways and main roads significantly worsen air quality.

• Residential heating, especially coal usage, also contributes to pollution due to insufficient fuel quality regulations.

Doğan emphasised the seriousness of the situation:

“Motor vehicle emissions are a year-round problem. In addition, we have yet to solve issues related to residential heating. The quality of coal used by households is not properly regulated, further aggravating air pollution.”

Rising Vehicle Numbers and Lack of Public Transport Initiatives

Doğan also pointed out that excessive reliance on private vehicles rather than public transport is a major factor in worsening air pollution.

“There are no effective initiatives to encourage public transportation. The existing efforts have been insufficient, and public transport routes need to be reconsidered. Without concrete action, the city’s air quality will deteriorate even further,” he warned.

According to Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) data, the number of registered vehicles in Antalya has increased by over half a million in the past six years.

• In 2024, there were 1,466,017 vehicles registered in the city.

• By January 2025, this number had risen to 1,578,360.

As the city continues to grow, experts stress the urgent need for traffic management strategies, improved public transport, and stricter emissions regulations to prevent further deterioration of air quality.

Türkiye and Surrounding Regions Record Nearly 110,000 Earthquakes Since 2023 Disaster

Türkiye and its surrounding regions have experienced nearly 110,000 earthquakes since the devastating Feb. 6, 2023, earthquakes, according to a statement from the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD).

In a social media post, AFAD shared a video visualising earthquake activity from Feb. 6, 2023, to Feb. 6, 2025. The agency noted that while Türkiye typically experiences around 24,000 earthquakes per year, seismic activity surged significantly following the 2023 disaster, leading to an unprecedented number of tremors in just two years.

Seismic Trends and Risk Factors

According to AFAD, Türkiye’s earthquake patterns generally follow these trends:

• A magnitude 6 earthquake occurs every three years.

• A magnitude 6+ earthquake happens approximately every five years.

• A magnitude 7+ earthquake strikes about once per decade.

The increased number of earthquakes in the past two years has raised concerns over seismic activity in the region, reinforcing the importance of earthquake preparedness.

Impact of the Feb. 6, 2023, Earthquakes

The twin earthquakes that struck Kahramanmaraş on Feb. 6, 2023, caused massive destruction across 11 southern provinces, resulting in the deaths of over 50,000 people and the displacement of millions. The disaster remains one of the deadliest in Türkiye’s history.

Recent Earthquake Swarm in the Aegean Region

More recently, seismic activity near the Greek island of Santorini triggered panic along Türkiye’s Aegean coastline, affecting the provinces of Muğla, İzmir, and Aydın. Greek media have reported that the earthquake swarm in the region is gradually declining, though tremors continue to be felt in Türkiye.

As the country remains one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world, authorities continue to emphasise seismic monitoring, disaster preparedness, and urban resilience as key priorities for the future.

Turkish inflation drops for ninth consecutive month

Türkiye’s annual inflation rate dropped for the ninth month in a row to 39.1% in February, easing from 42.1% in the previous month, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute.

This was below market estimates of 39.9%, as well as being the lowest figure since June 2023.

The total also marks the first time inflation has fallen below 40% in 20 months.

February’s lower figure was primarily due to easing price pressures for clothing and healthcare.

February’s inflation print could be a sign of Türkiye starting to recover somewhat from its recent economic problems, although significant challenges remain.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Friday that the central bank’s decision to cut its key interest rate by 250 basis points to 42.5% on Thursday was a step in the right direction.

Speaking at a Ramadan fast-breaking dinner with tradesmen in Istanbul, Erdoğan also said vendors and tradesmen must not allow those imposing “exorbitant price hikes” on citizens.
