Welcome to our midweek round-up of the latest news and updates from Fethiye and across Turkey.

Demolition Continues at Coastal Businesses in Kocaçalış, Fethiye

Fethiye, MUĞLA – Demolition orders issued for businesses in the Kocaçalış area of Fethiye’s Çiftlik neighborhood are now being carried out, as operators continue dismantling their establishments at their own expense. The Fethiye Municipality has given business owners until December 1 to complete the process, but uncertainty looms over what will happen to the coastline once the clearances are finished.

The actions follow earlier decisions declaring that businesses in the area fall within the officially designated coastal border. Landowner and operator Zeyyad Hekimci said that property holders have repeatedly suffered losses due to shifting shoreline determinations and legal reversals over the years.

Hekimci explained that the family’s land deeds were first issued in 1952, when 2,500 decares of land stretching “from the sea to the forest, from Karagedik to Kargı” were sold by the state to the Çiftlik Cooperative under his grandfather, Ömer Hekimci.

According to Hekimci, a miscalculation later caused 154 decares of their registered land to be incorrectly classified within the coastline. Although the Supreme Court once confirmed this error, allowing them to regain the title deed in 2010, the situation changed again following the political upheaval in 2016. A renewed case in 2017 reversed their previous victory, resulting in the loss of the land once more.

He said operators built facilities only after obtaining approvals through the 2017 zoning amnesty, receiving building permits, utility access, and door numbers from the municipality. After the court decision invalidated the title deeds, however, these structures again became categorised as illegal.

Hekimci noted that substantial payments have also been made to the state for unpaid rent:

  • 2.5 million TL between 2017 and 2022
  • 9.5 million TL between 2022 and 2025

Despite paying these amounts, they were unable to secure operating permits.

“Now the municipality rightfully wants to demolish these illegal buildings,” he said. “To avoid causing further financial strain to the municipality or damage to national property, we are carrying out the demolitions ourselves.”

Addressing rumors circulating in the region, Hekimci stated that their goal is to secure a lease for the land so it is not transferred to another party. He expressed confidence in both public institutions and the municipality:

“We believe the Fethiye Municipality, the Environment and Urbanization authorities, and the state will consider our situation. There are claims that this land will go to someone else, even mentioning former MP Hasan Özyer, but I do not believe the municipality or Mr. Özyer has such intentions.”

As demolition continues along the Kocaçalış coastline, residents and operators remain uncertain about future use of the area, awaiting clarity from state and municipal authorities.

Fines Issued to Those Who Randomly Dumped Garbage in Fethiye

Fethiye, MUĞLA – As part of continued environmental cleanup efforts in Fethiye, several citizens who were found to have dumped garbage randomly were issued administrative fines. Individuals who left waste on the ground or outside designated dumpsters were identified through photo traps placed at strategic locations across the district.

Following these detections, authorities imposed fines on those responsible, reinforcing the municipality’s commitment to curbing illegal dumping and protecting the environment.

Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca highlighted the success of the district-wide cleanup initiative, noting that the campaign—launched simultaneously across Fethiye during the summer—has already yielded significant results.

“Clean Fethiye” Becomes a Model for Turkey

Mayor Karaca said: “Our ‘CLEAN FETHİYE’ campaign is successfully underway. We are expanding our cleaning campaign with the campaign we launched simultaneously throughout the district during the summer months. This comprehensive effort, aimed at preventing littering on the ground and outside of garbage containers, has become an exemplary campaign throughout Turkey. We remain committed to making Fethiye a spotlessly clean city. I thank all our citizens who show concern and invite those who litter outside of garbage containers and on the ground to protect this city together.”

The municipality emphasized that environmental monitoring and photo-trap surveillance will continue across Fethiye to deter illegal dumping and maintain the district’s growing reputation as a clean and environmentally responsible community.

New Directive Prohibits Feeding of Stray Dogs Across Istanbul

Istanbul – The Istanbul Governor’s Office has issued a new directive prohibiting the feeding of stray dogs in public areas across the city, marking a significant step in its broader initiative to regulate stray animal management and safeguard public health.

The circular, titled “Procedures and Actions to Be Taken Regarding Stray Animals,” was published following the Provincial Animal Protection Board meeting held on Nov. 5, 2025. The directive reiterates the responsibilities of municipalities under Law No. 5199 on the Protection of Animals and related regulations, underscoring the crucial role of local authorities in managing the city’s stray animal population.

According to the Governor’s Office, municipalities across Istanbul have been allocated plots to establish natural habitats and shelters for stray animals. The directive calls for the rapid completion of planning, tendering, and construction phases for these facilities. It also urges municipalities to intensify efforts to collect, sterilize, rehabilitate, and relocate stray dogs to these designated areas in full compliance with the law.

A central mandate of the directive is the prohibition of uncontrolled feeding of stray dogs in sensitive locations, including:

  • Health care and educational institutions
  • Airports
  • Places of worship
  • Parks and gardens
  • Roadsides and playgrounds

Authorities say the ban aims to curb rising pest and rodent populations, reduce environmental pollution, prevent ecological imbalance, and mitigate risks to public health and safety.

The directive assigns supervisors the responsibility of ensuring the feeding ban is strictly enforced, warning that any loss of life or property damage linked to stray animals will be interpreted as a municipal failure to meet legal obligations. Such failures could carry administrative repercussions.

The Istanbul Governor’s Office called on both residents and local authorities to fully comply with the new measures, stressing the importance of coordinated action in creating a safer, healthier, and more balanced urban environment.

Gendarmerie Launch Drone-Assisted Operation Against Sand Thieves in Manavgat

Manavgat, ANTALYA – Gendarmerie units in Antalya’s Manavgat district have launched a drone-assisted operation targeting sand thieves who have caused extensive environmental damage along the coastline.

Acting on citizen reports received on Nov. 21, teams carried out a raid in the Mendirek area, where they seized trucks and heavy machinery found actively loading sand. Several drivers attempted to flee despite warnings, but were apprehended after a brief chase. Three suspects were detained, and efforts are continuing to locate two additional individuals connected to the operation.

As part of the investigation, authorities impounded five trucks and three excavators believed to have been used in large-scale sand theft in the Ulualan region. One suspect, identified as Seydi İ., was arrested and subsequently sent to prison.

Drone footage recorded along the Boğaz coastline revealed the scale of the environmental destruction, capturing deep pits and severe disruption to the natural shoreline.

Gendarmerie teams in Manavgat have now implemented 24/7 monitoring, utilizing drones, ground patrols, and newly installed camera traps—especially around the pine grove area, where access will be strictly controlled. Officials say these measures aim to halt further environmental damage and protect the region’s fragile coastal ecosystem.

Neolithic Structure Resembling Amphitheater Unearthed in Southeastern Turkey

Şanlıurfa, TURKEY – Archaeologists have uncovered a Neolithic architectural structure resembling an amphitheater at the Karahantepe archaeological site in southeastern Turkey, revealing new clues about early communal life and ritual practices.

Located within Tek Tek Mountains National Park, around 46 kilometers from Şanlıurfa’s city center, the site continues to yield significant discoveries as part of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s “Legacy for the Future” project. The initiative aims to uncover early ritual spaces, including figurines and structures used by some of the world’s first settled communities.

Excavation director Necmi Karul told Anadolu that settlement at Karahantepe began around 9400 BCE and lasted until the 8th millennium BCE. Researchers have identified three major settlement phases, evolving from round-plan structures to quadrangular buildings with rounded corners, and eventually to true-cornered constructions. All phases contained both public and domestic buildings.

Karul said the most striking recent discovery is a 17-meter-wide structure containing seated human figurines placed on the floor and embedded in the walls—evidence of a symbolic transition.

“These are very unique finds, showing that prehistoric people increasingly focused on human figurines over time, while earlier periods were dominated by animal symbolism,” Karul explained.

The building contains focal points featuring broad, three-tiered seating, echoing the layout of an odeon or amphitheater, suggesting it functioned as a venue for communal gatherings rather than a restricted ritual space.

Karul noted that the structure’s full layout will become clearer as restoration work continues and standing stones are re-erected in their original positions. Evidence collected so far shows that large groups gathered within the building, with human and animal figurines deliberately arranged at key locations.

“This allows us to draw certain conclusions about the function of these buildings. Had they been temples, their function would have been more limited. The primary purpose appears to have been bringing people together,” he said.

He added that this architectural concept can be seen as a precursor to later amphitheaters and odeons:

“With the advent of settled life, there was a need for spaces that facilitated communal living, which likely led to the construction of such buildings.”

Archaeologists expect further finds to deepen understanding of social and symbolic life in one of the world’s earliest settled regions.

Fethiye’s Famous Motorcycle Cat Gofret Charms Istanbul with Colorful Adventures

Fethiye, MUĞLA – Gofret, the cat known across Fethiye for riding on her owner’s motorcycle, has taken her remarkable journeys to Istanbul—complete with vibrant costumes and her signature helmet. Adopted from Hakkari when she was just two months old, Gofret has been raised by her owner, Hatem Topcu, in a ground-floor garden home in Fethiye, where she quickly adapted to outdoor life and the sound of the motorcycle.

What began as short rides around the neighbourhood soon became a daily routine. Dressed in outfits ranging from police uniforms to bee and wedding costumes, Gofret confidently sits at the front of the motorcycle, secured in a custom-designed baby carrier and never missing a ride without her helmet.

“People often think she’s a toy at first glance,” Topcu said. “When they realize she’s real, they smile in surprise. We started sharing videos, and she quickly became popular.”

Their adventures recently took them to Istanbul, where they visited Garipçe, Üsküdar, Eminönü, Sirkeci and Taksim. Gofret caught the attention of tourists and locals wherever she went, often becoming a playful companion for children. While crossing the Bosporus by ferry, she and Topcu fed seagulls and enjoyed the city’s panoramic views.

Topcu described their travels as “a journey of friendship,” highlighting the deep bond they share. Their first long-distance trip covered 1,200 kilometers, and the duo has since expanded their journeys beyond Turkey, even touring parts of Europe—cementing Gofret’s reputation as an international “motorcycle cat.”

Safety remains a priority. Gofret is always carried safely at the front of the motorcycle and protected with her helmet on every ride.

Their Istanbul trip also led to helping a sick stray kitten, making the journey meaningful beyond sightseeing. “We try to help street cats whenever possible,” Topcu noted.

When not exploring busy cities, the pair enjoys fishing trips, watching sunsets and even swimming together during bungalow getaways—another activity Gofret has grown to love.

“Wherever I go, she comes with me,” Topcu said. “It’s important to introduce cats to these experiences early so they grow without fear.”

With her fur blowing in the wind and her unmistakable charm, Gofret continues to win hearts—on two wheels and across continents.

Istanbul Set for Faster Earthquake Alerts with New Seafloor Sensors

Istanbul – Turkey’s earthquake early warning network is poised for a major upgrade as new seafloor sensors planned for the Marmara Sea are expected to slash alert times to as little as three to six seconds, significantly enhancing Istanbul’s earthquake preparedness.

Officials from the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute detailed the upcoming improvements at a recent briefing. They noted that the current system issued its first alert 8.4 seconds after the magnitude 5 earthquake off Marmara on October 2.

The early warning system functions by detecting P-waves — the first, non-destructive signals that precede the more damaging S-waves — enabling alerts to be sent out within seconds. While modern land-based stations have reduced data transmission delays to 0.2 seconds, the absence of real-time seafloor sensors still creates a natural six-second gap as seismic waves travel from offshore fault lines to coastal monitoring stations.

Professor Nurcan Meral Özel, Director of the Institute, explained that 30 newly installed terrestrial stations have already cut average delays from five to six seconds down to two to four seconds, but eliminating the offshore lag is now the central goal. Istanbul aims to operate a “fast and reliable” warning system supported by modern equipment, renewed stations and extensive field testing.

The system, initially launched with a small pilot group, now serves 1,500 to 3,000 users. Plans include installing at least five fully online seafloor stations along the northern fault line, though deep-water construction costs remain a challenge.

Once upgraded, the system will trigger automatic safety protocols, including stopping metro and train services, closing gas valves, isolating electrical lines and supporting emergency procedures in hospitals and schools.

The Institute has also introduced a mobile early-warning app for public use, expanding access to faster alerts and potentially life-saving seconds ahead of shaking.

Quinces and Lavender Turn Into Scholarships for Students

Fethiye, MUĞLA – The Tradesmen and Craftsmen Hobby Garden, established in the Doğanlar neighbourhood of Seydikemer in memory of the late Mehmet Öztürk — a respected board member of the Fethiye Tradesmen and Craftsmen Credit and Guarantee Cooperative — continues to transform agricultural production into educational support for local students.

This year’s quince harvest, carried out in the 22-acre garden, brought in a higher yield than previous seasons. Cooperative President İsmail Başoğlu and a small team of workers harvested, crated, and transported the quinces to the Antalya market, where demand was stronger than in Fethiye. Alongside the fruit harvest, 16 kilograms of lavender oil produced from the garden’s extensive lavender beds were also sold.

Başoğlu confirmed that the combined income from quinces and lavender — estimated at 150,000 TL — will directly fund scholarships for university students whose families are members of the cooperative. “This year, 110 of our partners’ children applied for scholarships. Thanks to our harvest, we will be able to support all 110 university students,” he said.

The hobby garden, home to 200 quince trees, 300 almond trees, and hundreds of lavender plants, is expected to yield approximately 4 tons of quinces this year, up from last year’s 2.5–3 tons. Quinces are currently selling for around 40 TL per kilogram in Antalya.

Başoğlu noted that the strong harvest may also signal a seasonal shift: “Our elders used to say that a bountiful quince year means a harsh winter. This year’s yield is both abundant and high in quality.”

With each passing season, the garden named in honour of Mehmet Öztürk continues to grow its dual legacy — agricultural productivity and meaningful educational support for local youth.

Ancient Anchorage and Shipwrecks Discovered Off Fethiye Coast

Fethiye, MUĞLA – Underwater archaeological surveys conducted off the coast of Fethiye, Muğla, have revealed an ancient anchorage and three historically significant shipwrecks, offering new insights into maritime activity spanning from the Bronze Age to the Ottoman period.

The discoveries were made by a team led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hakan Öniz, Head of the Department of Cultural Heritage Conservation and Restoration at Akdeniz University’s Faculty of Fine Arts. Working under the “Heritage for the Future Project” with permission from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the team used advanced sonar systems, remotely operated robots, and deep diving techniques to locate and document submerged historical remains.

This year alone, Öniz and his team documented 10 shipwrecks—six off the Antalya coast and four off Fethiye—bringing the national inventory from 411 to 421 known wrecks. The expedition marks the first scientific survey of its kind conducted off Fethiye’s eastern coastline.

Among the most remarkable findings is a previously unknown ancient anchorage that once served as a refuge for ships navigating the Mediterranean. Öniz explained that vessels from Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, and the coasts of Hatay, Adana, and Mersin likely used this natural shelter during storms or while travelling along major trade routes.

The team confirmed that ships anchored at this point from the Bronze Age onward, based on the numerous ancient anchors discovered on the seabed. “These anchors show us how many thousands of years Fethiye’s shores have witnessed maritime activity,” Öniz noted.

Within the anchorage zone, archaeologists also identified three shipwrecks, dating between the 4th century BC and the 6th century AD. Though positioned in what was considered a safe harbour, the ships are believed to have sunk after being caught by sudden easterly storms.

“Each shipwreck is a time capsule,” Öniz said. “From their amphorae and cargo, we learn what was produced in each period, where it was shipped from, and how ancient trade networks operated. These wrecks are like books that help us read history.”

The study contributes to Turkey’s rapidly growing underwater cultural inventory. Öniz highlighted that the team is also conducting major excavations at the Kumluca Ceramic Shipwreck and the Kumluca Middle Bronze Age Shipwreck—considered the world’s oldest known shipwreck. Artifacts recovered from these sites are planned for display at the Mediterranean Underwater Archaeology Museum in Kemer, scheduled to open at the end of 2026.

The discoveries off Fethiye not only expand understanding of ancient maritime routes but also mark the region as a new hotspot for underwater archaeology—offering an exciting glimpse into millennia of seafaring history hidden beneath the waves.

Water Shortages in Kayaköy and Karakeçililer Set to End with New Pipeline Project

Fethiye, MUĞLA – The Muğla Water and Sewerage Administration (MUSKİ) has launched a new water pipeline project to resolve ongoing drinking water shortages in Fethiye’s Kayaköy and Karakeçililer neighborhoods.

The project aims to replace the old and inadequate water lines with a modern, high-capacity pipeline system designed to meet current and future demand. Once completed, the new infrastructure is expected to fully eliminate the water supply problems that residents have faced in recent years.

MUSKİ teams are carrying out excavation and pipe installation works throughout the affected areas. Officials noted that the upgraded system will not only provide consistent water flow but also improve overall service quality and reduce maintenance needs.

Residents in Kayaköy and Karakeçililer are expected to benefit significantly once the project is completed, marking a long-awaited solution to one of the region’s most persistent utility issues.

Karataş Lake Turns to Dry Soil Amid Severe Drought

Burdur – Karataş Lake in Burdur, once a thriving source of livelihood for local residents and an important habitat for hundreds of bird species, has now completely dried up, leaving behind a vast expanse of cracked, barren soil.

The lake, which for generations supported fishing, agriculture, and seasonal tourism, has been severely impacted by long-term drought, declining groundwater levels, and insufficient water inflow. What was once a vibrant ecosystem is now a stark reminder of the growing effects of climate change and regional water mismanagement.

Local residents express deep concern as the disappearance of the lake not only disrupts biodiversity but also affects the agricultural economy that relied on its water. Bird species that once frequented the area in large numbers have also diminished significantly due to the loss of wetland habitat.

Environmental experts warn that similar ecological collapses could increase unless effective water conservation strategies are implemented across the region. Karataş Lake now stands as a symbol of the urgent need for sustainable water management in Burdur and beyond.

Ancient Mask Reliefs Unearthed at Roman-Era Theater in Southern Turkey

Osmaniye – Ongoing excavations in the 2,700-year-old ancient city of Kastabala in Osmaniye have led to the discovery of five new theatrical mask reliefs, bringing the total number of masks unearthed this year to 36. The findings were made in the ancient theater area, believed to have been built in the 1st century AD during the Roman Empire and originally capable of seating around 5,000 spectators.

The excavation team, led by Faris Demir, an archaeologist at Osmaniye Korkut Ata University, has been focusing on uncovering architectural elements of the stage building as well as artistic relics linked to ancient performance culture.

Demir told Anadolu that similar mask discoveries have been made in previous excavation seasons.

“We unearthed masks in Kastabala in previous years as well. These depicted tragedy and comedy plays,” he said. “We have also brought to light numerous architectural elements belonging to the stage building. These finds will make it possible to restore the structure.”

Among the newly discovered pieces, Demir highlighted the importance of a mask relief representing an elderly thinker or philosopher, noting that it deepens understanding of the theater’s cultural role.

“The most important of the new discoveries is a carving of an elderly thinker,” he said. “This indicates that the theater served not only as a performance venue but also as a cultural center where philosophical and literary discussions were held.”

Demir added that the masks show influences from both Eastern and Western cultural traditions, reflecting Kastabala’s historical significance as a crossroads of civilizations.

With the project progressing steadily, Demir said the long-term goal is to fully restore the stage building:

“With this year’s finds, the number of masks discovered has risen to 36. By the end of this project, we will be able to restore the stage building and hand it down to future generations.”

New Earthquake Early Warning System Marks Major Safety Breakthrough in Turkey

Istanbul – Turkey has taken a significant step forward in earthquake preparedness with the improved Earthquake Early Warning System developed by Boğaziçi University’s Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (KRDAE). The system demonstrated its effectiveness on Oct. 2, when it successfully issued its first real-time alert just 8.4 seconds after a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the Marmara region.

KRDAE’s work centers on the high-risk Marmara region, one of Turkey’s most seismically active areas. The project has now entered a new phase, focused on creating an advanced detection infrastructure capable of identifying the first, fastest-moving seismic waves and issuing alerts within seconds. These critical moments can allow authorities and citizens to take rapid precautionary measures, reducing injury, damage, and disruption.

A major leap in the system’s performance came from upgrading the data transmission infrastructure of seismic stations across the Marmara region. These improvements reduced transmission delay to the Kandilli Observatory to just 0.2 seconds.

When seismic activity is detected, real-time signals are immediately processed by specialized software that rapidly determines the earthquake’s location and estimates its magnitude. This enables the system to generate an alert almost instantaneously.

The recent Marmara Sea earthquake served as a crucial real-world performance test. After seismic waves reached land-based stations in about five seconds, KRDAE’s software analyzed the data and issued the first alert within a total of 8.4 seconds. Officials say this validates the system’s ability to function effectively under real earthquake conditions and provides valuable data for ongoing improvements.

KRDAE, in collaboration with a software development firm, has also created an iOS-based mobile application that delivers early warning signals directly to users. The system is currently being tested on approximately 2,500 devices, with real earthquake events used to measure notification speed and reliability.

Looking ahead, KRDAE plans to expand the early warning system across Turkey. Upcoming steps include:

  • Installing new low-latency seismic stations throughout the country
  • Releasing an Android version of the mobile app
  • Enhancing software infrastructure to support large-scale, simultaneous alert distribution

Officials say these developments will strengthen Turkey’s ability to respond swiftly to future earthquakes, making early warning technology a vital component of national safety efforts.

Expert Warns Sındırgı Facing “Unprecedented Earthquake Storm”

Balıkesir, TURKEY – Sındırgı, in the Balıkesir province, has been experiencing what experts describe as an “extraordinary earthquake storm” for the past three months. According to Gazi University Faculty of Engineering faculty member and disaster management expert Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bülent Özmen, the scale and intensity of the seismic activity is unlike anything previously recorded in Turkish history.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Özmen said that nearly 18,000 tremors have occurred in the region since the 6.1-magnitude earthquake on August 10. Of these, two were magnitude 6.1 and around 80 reached magnitude 4. “We are facing an earthquake activity level we can call an ‘earthquake storm’—an unprecedented number of earthquakes in Turkish history,” he said.

Özmen noted that the activity appears to be driven by both tectonic stress and magmatic intrusion, making the situation unusual. He stressed that while predicting the future course of the earthquakes is not possible, detailed geological and geophysical studies are urgently needed.

He recommended establishing temporary earthquake observation stations in Sındırgı and surrounding districts to more accurately track micro-earthquake behaviour and seismic parameters. Monitoring groundwater levels, radon gas changes, electrical resistivity, magnetic field fluctuations, and crustal deformation could provide valuable early signals, he added.

“All observations should be integrated into a central dataset, and a comprehensive report should be prepared by the AFAD Earthquake Science Board,” Özmen said. “The public must be kept informed regularly to prevent misinformation.”

Calling the situation “extraordinary”, Özmen argued that extraordinary measures may be needed. With AFAD having recently designated the area a Disaster Zone Affecting General Life, he noted that further steps—such as declaring a disaster-prone zone or even a state of emergency—may be necessary. He emphasised the importance of expanding temporary shelters, supporting voluntary relocation, and ensuring uninterrupted education and healthcare services.

Özmen also pointed to previous scientific reports showing that the Simav Fault Zone and Gelenbe Fault are capable of producing earthquakes up to magnitude 7. While predicting timing is impossible, he noted that 31 magnitude-6 earthquakes would be required to release the energy of a single magnitude-7 event, and only two such quakes have occurred in Sındırgı so far.

“This is a highly unusual and stressful period for the people of Sındırgı,” Özmen said. “Extraordinary measures must be taken.”

Temple of Zeus Discovered in Limyra After 43-Year Search

Antalya, TURKEY – A portion of the Temple of Zeus, long known from epigraphic sources but never located despite 43 years of research, has been discovered in the ancient city of Limyra in Antalya’s Finike district. The find was made during ongoing excavations in the western section of the city.

Limyra, situated at the foot of Mount Toçak about 9 kilometres northeast of Finike, was one of the easternmost cities of the Lycian civilization. It served as the capital during the reign of King Perikle and later became an episcopal centre in the Byzantine period. The city is notable for its extensive rock-cut tombs, city walls, the Heroon of Perikle, a 6,000-seat theatre, Roman bathhouse, the Ptolemaion monument, a main street, and a monumental tomb dedicated to Gaius Caesar.

Current excavations are being carried out under the coordination of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kudret Sezgin, in partnership with the Austrian Archaeological Institute. Sezgin, a faculty member at Hittite University’s Department of Archaeology, said archaeological evidence places Limyra’s earliest urbanisation around 2,400 years ago.

Sezgin explained that Lycian King Perikle undertook major urban development in the city, and that Limyra was incorporated into the Heritage for the Future Project in 2023. He said this year’s excavations produced a major breakthrough:

“We discovered a temple known from epigraphic sources since 1982, but whose location had remained unknown. Archaeological findings confirm that this structure is a Temple of Zeus built during the classical period. Written sources also tell us that Zeus was the chief deity of the city during the Hellenistic and Roman periods.”

Archaeologists uncovered the main entrance section of the temple, including the eastern façade and the ante walls (porch structures). The façade measures 15 metres in width. Sezgin noted that a wall from the Byzantine period had been constructed on top of the temple remains, while the sacred chamber lies beneath a privately owned orange grove just outside the existing walls. Excavations will continue there following expropriation procedures.

Ceramics found at the site indicate that settlement in the area may date back 5,000 years, prompting researchers to re-evaluate long-held theories about Limyra’s urban development. Sezgin stated:

“It has now been concluded that the monumental gate known as the propylon, located under Roman Street, served as the entrance to the temple’s sacred precinct in the classical period. We also determined that the structure previously identified as a Hellenistic city wall was in fact the temple’s protective boundary wall.”

The discovery marks a significant addition to the archaeological understanding of Limyra and provides new insights into Lycian religious architecture and city planning.

Gallipoli Historic Underwater Park Draws 15,000 Divers in Two Years

Çanakkale, TURKEY – The Gallipoli Historic Underwater Park, established in 2021 by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s Gallipoli Historic Site Directorate, has rapidly become one of Türkiye’s most captivating tourism attractions, luring 15,000 divers in just two years to explore its rare underwater wartime heritage.

Located off the storied shores of the Gallipoli Peninsula, the park offers an extraordinary dive into history—literally. Beneath its waters lie 23 sunken warships and wreck sites dating back more than 110 years, each bearing silent testimony to pivotal moments of World War I. Among the most visited wrecks are HMS Majestic, the remains of Ertuğrul Bay, Massena and Saghalien, the Helles Barges, wrecks off Tekke Bay (W Beach), and HMS Triumph.

İsmail Kaşdemir, head of the Gallipoli Historic Site Directorate, said the underwater park has quickly become one of the world’s leading centers for scuba diving.

“Our 23 wrecks and 12 diving points have transformed the park into a global magnet for diving enthusiasts,” he said.

Kaşdemir highlighted the cultural significance of the underwater site:

“From the beginning, we understood the immense treasure beneath these waters. After careful work, we created the world’s only World War I–themed underwater park. Top divers, global media, and television channels come here because each wreck beneath Gallipoli’s waters tells its own story.”

Diver interest is rising sharply, with 5,000 visitors in 2024 and expectations of 10,000 divers in 2025. Kaşdemir described the atmosphere as “a journey through a time tunnel,” allowing visitors to grasp the impact of the Gallipoli Campaign from a striking underwater perspective.

As Çanakkale’s reputation grows as an international cultural hub, efforts are underway to elevate the park’s profile even further. The directorate plans to present the site at a major global diving fair in Düsseldorf, Germany, this January.

Supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Turkish Tourism Promotion and Development Agency, these initiatives aim to boost international visibility.

“With Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy’s strong support, we are confident the Gallipoli Historic Underwater Park will become one of the top three diving destinations worldwide,” Kaşdemir said. “At the same time, we are working to expand diving opportunities to additional coastal and inland locations across Turkey.”

The park continues to grow as a world-class attraction, inviting divers to descend into history and witness a chapter of the past frozen beneath the waves.

Fethiyespor Parts Ways with Manager Selahattin Dinçel

Dinçel Says He Is “Blessed by Fethiyespor and Fethiye” as His Tenure Ends

Fethiye, MUĞLA – Fethiyespor has officially parted ways with manager Selahattin Dinçel following a period of poor results in the Nesine 2nd League Red Group. The decision came after the team’s 1–1 home draw against 68 Aksaray Belediyespor, which prompted fans to call for both the board and Dinçel to resign. His departure was finalised after a meeting with Club President Esat Bakırcı.

Under Dinçel, Fethiyespor recorded 3 wins, 4 draws and 5 losses in 12 league matches this season, and managed to collect only one point in six away fixtures. At a farewell press conference held at the club’s facilities, Dinçel apologised to supporters for the team’s performance and acknowledged the high expectations surrounding the club.

Dinçel, who previously led Fethiyespor to a championship and later helped stabilise the team during a difficult second term, reflected on his tenure, noting both the achievements and challenges. He explained that budget limitations, rising transfer fees and changes to federation rules had contributed to squad-building difficulties at the start of the season.

Despite the team’s struggles, Dinçel emphasised his affection for Fethiyespor and Fethiye, stating: “I love Fethiyespor and Fethiye very much. I am truly blessed by Fethiyespor and Fethiye. No matter what happens, I will always be by their side with a loving heart.”

He stressed that his departure was mutual, saying, “I neither resigned nor was I forced to leave; we sat down and reached an agreement.”

Dinçel was bid farewell with flowers by Fethiyespor Supporters Association President Özkan Hırçın, association members, fans and club officials. He expressed gratitude to Club President Esat Bakırcı, the administrators, the supporters, Mayor Alim Karaca and local media for their support throughout his tenure.

Speaking on wider club matters, Dinçel also highlighted the development of the youth academy but noted that improved training facilities remain essential for long-term success.

Regarding allegations linking players to a recent betting scandal, Dinçel said he had no involvement and urged the public to wait for official findings.

Dinçel concluded by expressing confidence in the team’s future, saying he believes Fethiyespor has the strength to continue competing for success even after his departure.

Abundant Harvest Marks the Start of Çıntar Season in Fethiye

Fethiye, MUĞLA – With the arrival of autumn, Çıntar season has begun in Fethiye, bringing abundance and satisfaction to local producers. This year’s rich harvest has also led to a notable drop in prices, making the much-loved seasonal mushroom more accessible to consumers.

Hilmi Özen, a producer from Bağlıağaç Village, stated that Çıntar yields are particularly high this season. “Our crops are abundant this year. Çıntar season is bountiful. It’s a bit of a hassle to pick, but prices used to be 500 lira and have now dropped to 300 lira. People can buy and eat them with ease,” he said.

Highlighting the health benefits of Çıntar, Özen added, “Çıntar is a natural antibiotic. It’s a naturally cultivated mushroom that is beneficial to humans. This product, grown in Fethiye’s natural environment, is both a source of flavor and healing.”

Chestnut Season Brings the Flavours of Autumn to Fethiye

Fethiye, MUĞLA –With the arrival of cooler days, chestnuts and cranberries — two essential symbols of autumn — have made their return to the stalls and markets across Fethiye. Locals are embracing the season by enjoying chestnut kebabs and fresh cranberries, marking the beginning of a beloved seasonal tradition.

Chestnut and plantain season officially began this week, bringing with it the familiar aromas and tastes that herald winter’s approach. Both delicacies have quickly become favourites among residents, adding warmth and flavour to the autumn atmosphere.

Local chestnut seller Bayram Tan highlighted the cultural importance of the seasonal treat, saying, “Chestnuts are part of Fethiye’s culture. They’re eaten and loved all the time — people even make kebabs with them. Their season has begun. Both chestnuts and Çıntar are in high demand. With the rain, the Çıntar season has also started.”

Tan also noted that prices are slightly higher this year: “A kilo of chestnuts starts at 250 lira and goes up to 400 lira. Çıntar are also plentiful on the stalls, but prices range from 200 to 300 lira per kilo,” he said.

As the markets fill with the scent of roasted chestnuts and the vibrant colours of seasonal produce, Fethiye residents are once again enjoying the simple pleasures of autumn.

Ghost Net Bin on Fethiye’s Çalış Beach Misused as Garbage Container

Fethiye, MUĞLA – A special bin installed to collect ghost nets on Fethiye’s Çalış Beach has been misused as a regular garbage container by some residents, drawing criticism from environmentally conscious locals.

The ghost net bin, placed along Çalış Beach to help protect the marine ecosystem, was intended to gather discarded fishing nets that pose serious dangers to marine life. However, household and plastic waste have been thrown into the bin instead, undermining its intended purpose.

Ghost nets, often referred to as “silent killers” of the sea, can trap and kill sea turtles, dolphins, and numerous fish species. Efforts to remove them are vital for maintaining marine biodiversity and environmental balance.

The misuse of the bin has sparked frustration among residents, who have called for clearer warning signs and a redesign of the bin to prevent further misuse.

Turkey says 20 troops killed in Georgia plane crash

ANKARA, Nov 12 (Reuters) – Turkey’s defence ministry said on Wednesday that 20 soldiers were killed in the crash of its military aircraft in Georgia a day earlier, as inspectors continued to seek clues what caused the NATO member’s cargo plane to go down.

The C-130 plane took off from Azerbaijan for Turkey and crashed in Georgia on Tuesday.

Ankara has not yet provided a reason for its deadliest military incident since 2020. It said Turkish and Georgian authorities began inspections at the site, in the Sighnaghu municipality of Georgia’s Kakheti district, at 0330 GMT on Wednesday.

Initial footage from the scene showed chunks of twisted metal strewn across a grassy knoll, while unverified footage on social media showed the plane breaking apart in mid-air and then corckscrewing towards the earth in a blaze.

On Wednesday, the Turkish Defence Ministry released a list of the 20 soldiers killed in the crash.

Thousands of Speed Signs Removed and Limits Adjusted Across Turkey

Fethiye, MUĞLA – In October 2025, Turkey’s Directorate General of Security removed approximately 20,000 superfluous or confusing traffic signs across all 81 provinces, including Fethiye, as part of a new nationwide road safety initiative. The move aims to simplify road signage and improve driver compliance with clearer, more consistent speed limits.

Key aspects of the changes include:

  • Sign Removal: Around 20,000 non-essential or confusing signs were taken down to create safer and more consistent driving environments.
  • Speed Limit Adjustments: General national limits remain unchanged, but some road sections have been revised. For instance, on parts of the Karadeniz Highway, limits were increased to 110 km/h. The maximum limit on highways (Otoyol) continues to be up to 140 km/h, depending on road classification.
  • Enforcement Focus: The initiative includes stricter enforcement under a new penalty system announced by Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, targeting speeding, red-light violations, and mobile phone use while driving.
  • Local Variations: Municipalities can still set their own limits on certain local roads, which sometimes results in non-standard limits like 72 km/h or 82 km/h. These are designed to account for the 10% speed tolerance before fines are issued.
  • Radar Systems: Reports indicate that private radar systems were also scrapped as part of the updated enforcement strategy.

The overall goal of the project is to enhance road safety by reducing driver confusion and focusing enforcement on clear, standardized rules nationwide.

Median Crossings in Fethiye Closed

Fethiye, MUĞLA – The crossings between the medians on main streets in Fethiye have been barricaded as part of new traffic safety regulations aimed at reducing accidents and improving pedestrian safety.

According to officials, the decision was made after reports showed that motorcycles were making improper U-turns through median openings, leading to frequent accidents and posing a danger to pedestrians. To prevent further incidents, barricades were installed at several intermediate crossing points on major roads throughout the town.

Following the implementation, public opinion in Fethiye has been divided. While some residents welcomed the move as a necessary step to enhance safety, others argued that the lack of alternative crossings, especially along long medians, has made it difficult for pedestrians to cross safely.

Local authorities are reportedly monitoring traffic flow and public feedback to assess whether further adjustments will be needed in the coming weeks.

11th International Milas Olive Harvest Festival Begins

Milas, MUĞLA – The 11th International Milas Olive Harvest Festival, which aims to promote olives and olive oil and raise awareness among local producers in the Milas district of Muğla, began with a colorful procession through the town.

The opening procession, which started from Milas Uzunyuva and was accompanied by the Milas Municipal Band, concluded at Atapark with the participation of local dignitaries, women in traditional clothing, NGO representatives, and olive producers. The event also featured a lively folk dance performance by the Milas Yörük Obaları Association.

In his opening remarks, Muğla Governor İdris Akbıyık highlighted the province’s strong potential in olive and olive oil production.

“Muğla is one of Turkey’s leading provinces in olive and olive oil production,” Akbıyık said. “We are currently ranked 8th in olives and 3rd in olive oil production nationally, and 50% of this comes from Milas. Milas olive oil is among the highest quality in both Turkey and the world, and it holds an EU geographical indication. Quality standards are very important to us. Our olive tree count has now surpassed 20 million, up from 15–17 million a decade ago.”

Milas Mayor Fevzi Topuz also underlined the district’s deep cultural and economic connection to olive oil:

“The people of Milas cannot live without olives or olive oil,” he said. “We are doing everything possible to brand, promote, and market this precious product while protecting our olive trees, one of Milas’s greatest assets.”

Muğla Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, Seyfettin Baydar, added that the directorate continues to support producers throughout all stages of cultivation and production.

Following the speeches, officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the festival and toured olive and olive oil product stands in Atapark. The festival will continue throughout the weekend with a series of olive and olive oil-themed events, tastings, and cultural performances celebrating Milas’s proud olive-growing heritage.

Muğla Governor Akbıyık: “Kaunos Is the Memory of These Lands”

Köyceğiz, MUĞLA – Muğla Governor Dr. İdris Akbıyık described the ancient city of Kaunos as “the memory of these lands” during a series of visits and inspections in the Köyceğiz district.

Governor Akbıyık, accompanied by District Governor Mert Kumcu, first visited the renovated Köyceğiz Water Sports and Camp Training Center, where he met with club managers and athletes. Emphasizing the importance of Lake Köyceğiz for rowing, canoeing, and sailing, Akbıyık noted the district’s potential in sports tourism, supported by its natural thermal springs and ecological connection to the Dalyan Canal.

The governor also inspected the former Köyceğiz District Governor’s Office building, receiving information on its current condition and planned use. Later, he visited the ancient city of Kaunos in the Çandır neighborhood, where he was briefed on ongoing excavations and restoration efforts by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ufuk Çörtük, head of the Kaunos excavations.

Dr. Çörtük reported that the 2025 excavation season focused on the Archaic Walled City and Monastery Sector, revealing obsidian tools from the Late Neolithic period and artifacts from the Turkish era. He added that medical instruments discovered in the monastery area indicate its use as a health center in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.

Following the visit, Governor Akbıyık highlighted Kaunos’s significance, stating:

“Kaunos is the memory of these lands. Each excavation is a bridge connecting the past to the present, and the present to the future. We will continue to work with determination to protect and pass on this heritage to future generations.”

He thanked Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ufuk Çörtük and the excavation team for their contributions to preserving Muğla’s cultural heritage.

As part of his Köyceğiz program, Governor Akbıyık also met with local headmen (muhtars), describing them as “the state’s most important representatives in the field,” and discussed public services, local needs, and ongoing projects.

Concluding his visit with a stop at Lake Köyceğiz, the governor underscored the area’s natural beauty, water sports opportunities, and ecotourism potential, reaffirming his commitment to supporting initiatives that protect and enhance the district’s historical, cultural, and environmental assets.

Fethiye’s Secondhand Market Turns Vintage Finds into Student Support

Fethiye, MUĞLA – The secondhand market held on the first Thursday of each month in Fethiye continues to attract growing crowds, offering everything from 1980s memorabilia to vintage household treasures.

Organized by the Fethiye Tourism, Promotion, Education, Culture and Environment Foundation (FETAV), the market was launched to raise scholarship funds for students from Fethiye who are studying medicine outside the district.

Now a beloved local tradition, the market features nearly 300 stalls packed with clothing, curtains, shoes, and secondhand household goods. Among the highlights are retro items from the 1980s and heirloom rugs passed down through generations. Prices range from as little as 5 TL up to 500 TL, drawing both locals and foreign residents living in Fethiye.

FETAV also operates a stall at the market, run by volunteers from various civil society organizations, with all proceeds supporting the scholarship program.

FETAV volunteer Mine Akça explained, “With this event we launched years ago, we are helping provide scholarships for medical students from Fethiye studying elsewhere. At the market, we meet citizens’ needs for everything from kitchenware to clothing, priced between 30 TL and 100 TL. Demand is quite good.”

With its nostalgic charm, community spirit, and charitable purpose, Fethiye’s secondhand market has become a lively monthly event—one that turns pre-loved goods into new opportunities for local students.

FTSO Launches ‘Geographically Indicated and Local Product Friendly Business’ Campaign to Promote Regional Flavours

Fethiye, MUĞLA – The Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FTSO) has launched the “Geographically Indicated and Local Product Friendly Business” campaign, awarding certificates to restaurants, cafes, hotels, and tourist facilities that incorporate geographically indicated and locally produced ingredients into their menus.

FTSO Chairman Osman Çıralı personally visited several businesses to present their certificates, praising their commitment to promoting local heritage. “I owe a debt of gratitude to our businesses that offer products reflecting our soil, climate, and cultural heritage to guests from across our country and around the world,” he said. “By using local ingredients, they help introduce our visitors to the nature, traditions, and culture of our region, while also contributing to local economic development.”

The campaign, launched on October 1, 2025, aims to highlight and increase demand for local products in Fethiye and Seydikemer, especially those with geographical indication registrations such as Fethiye Tahini, Fethiye Rock Fig, and Fethiye Tarhana. It also supports products currently in the application process, including morel mushrooms, Nif cherries, Arsa grapes, pink tomatoes, Bekçiler potatoes, and Nerdek.

Following the campaign announcement, Chairman Çıralı visited participating businesses, presented their certificates, and encouraged them to display the accompanying stickers prominently in their venues. “Our certificates cover all local products,” he noted, emphasizing that the recognition extends to every product grown or produced in the region.

Çıralı highlighted the growing global importance of gastronomic tourism, which connects visitors with destinations through food experiences. “Tourists are no longer satisfied with just sea, sand, and sun,” he said. “They want to taste the authentic flavours of our region and discover the stories behind them. Local products play a vital role in this. Through dishes made with local ingredients, our businesses act as cultural ambassadors, offering visitors a taste of our identity.”

Over the past month, FTSO representatives have visited 17 businesses to deliver their certificates, with plans to continue recognizing others. Çıralı invited any remaining establishments using local products to contact the Chamber to be included in the campaign.

Referring to UNWTO data showing that gastronomy tourism accounts for nearly 30 percent of global tourism expenditure, Çıralı stressed the economic potential of local product-focused initiatives. “The economic cycle created by local products will not only strengthen our agriculture and trade but also elevate our position in global tourism,” he said. “Even the smallest efforts by our businesses are valuable. I extend my sincere gratitude to all who support and showcase our local products. These certificates are both a symbol of appreciation and a call to continue this vital work.”

Tables and Chairs Return to Çalış Beach Despite Municipal Ban

Fethiye, MUĞLA – Despite a municipal ban introduced earlier this year, tables and chairs have once again begun to occupy the seaside area of Çalış Beach.

The Fethiye Municipality had announced on May 5th that no tables or chairs were to be placed along the beachfront, following a decision enforced by the Municipality Police Department around six months ago. The regulation aimed to ensure the area remained open for public access throughout the summer season.

However, recent observations reveal that the seaside has once more seen the return of furniture, prompting frustration among local residents. Many have voiced their objections, urging the municipality to uphold its earlier decision and prevent the beach from being reclaimed by private interests.

Municipal authorities are reportedly planning to increase inspection frequency in the coming days to address the issue.

Mega Yacht ‘Sunrays’ Refuels in Fethiye Before Sailing to Egypt

Fethiye, MUĞLA – One of the world’s largest luxury yachts, Sunrays, docked in Fethiye for refueling, drawing attention from locals and visitors alike.

The 85.43-metre mega yacht, owned by Indian billionaire Ravi Ruia, anchored at Fethiye Pier on Tuesday for a scheduled refueling stop. The vessel, flying the Cayman Islands flag, reportedly took on 94,000 liters of fuel during the operation.

Built in 2010, Sunrays is a floating palace of luxury and design, boasting nine guest cabins — including a master suite and three VIP cabins — along with an array of high-end amenities such as a spa, beauty salon, pool, gym, beach club, and dedicated entertainment areas. The yacht also offers water sports facilities and features advanced stabilizing systems for a smoother sailing experience.

The striking vessel, measuring 14 meters wide, made an impressive sight in Fethiye harbour before continuing its journey toward Egypt.

The Turkish Red Crescent Blood Services Unit conducted the drive in the FTSO Service Building parking lot, where participants contributed to saving lives through blood donation. As a gesture of appreciation, the Red Crescent presented small gifts to all donors.

New Golf Course to Open at Hilton Dalaman Sarigerme in 2026

Dalaman, MUĞLA – Turkey’s reputation as a world-class golf destination is set to expand once again, with the opening of a new 18-hole course at the Hilton Dalaman Sarigerme Resort scheduled for April 2026.

Since the first courses were built in Belek, Antalya, during the 1990s, the country has grown into a major hub for golf holidaymakers. Now, players will have a new Mediterranean destination to explore — around 200 miles west of Belek and just minutes from Dalaman International Airport.

Originally conceived in 2006, the project was delayed by the 2008 financial crisis and subsequent environmental and planning challenges. Work finally resumed in 2023 with updated designs and fresh ambitions, leading to construction starting in April 2024 and completion in September 2025.

Ümit Yasar Atalay, general manager of the new club, said:

“Our vision is to create an environmentally conscious, nature-integrated golf course that meets international standards and positions Turkey where it rightfully belongs in the global golf tourism arena. The area’s rare qualities inspired us to envision a course that would not only coexist with the landscape but also enhance it.”

Designed as a sustainable and aesthetic living space, the course aims to provide a premium experience for players of all levels, offering a tranquil environment in harmony with nature.

Bordered by the beach resort to the south and a river to the west, the course sits in one of southwestern Turkey’s most ecologically rich areas, featuring diverse vegetation, natural lakes, and serving as a stopover for migratory birds.

Strong Harvest in Muğla as Pine Honey Yields Reach Highest Level in Five Years

Muğla, MUĞLA – Favorable weather conditions have boosted pine honey production in Muğla, restoring yields close to pre-fire averages and marking the strongest harvest in several years.

Muğla, which accounts for about 80 percent of Turkey’s pine honey output and 90 percent of global production, had seen yields fall sharply following devastating forest fires in 2021. However, this year’s favorable climate has supported the recovery of pine forests and the return of the pine bollworm (Marchalina hellenica), a key species in honey production.

Yılmaz Kaya, President of the Muğla Beekeepers Association, said approximately 6,000 local families earn their living from beekeeping, while a further 3,000 migratory beekeeping families travel to the region each year. He added that nearly half of Turkey’s bee population is based in Muğla.

According to Kaya, pine honey yields have reached around 20,000 tons, the highest in the past four to five years. He noted that the sector, which had been disrupted by climate change, the pandemic, and wildfires since 2020, has regained momentum, with both production and prices improving over the past two years.

Muğla pine honey, recognised as a geographically indicated product, continues to stand as one of Turkey’s most valuable agricultural exports and a symbol of the region’s ecological and economic resilience.

Restored Atatürk House in Thessaloniki to reopen on Nov 10

Thessaloniki, GREECE – The historic Atatürk House, the birthplace of Turkey’s founding leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, will reopen to visitors on November 10 following a major restoration and landscaping project.

The Turkish Consulate General in Thessaloniki announced that the museum will welcome visitors at 10 a.m., immediately after a ceremony commemorating Atatürk on the Day of Remembrance, observed annually on the anniversary of his passing in 1938.

The restoration, carried out under the supervision of Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism and coordinated by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) in collaboration with Greek authorities, aimed to revive the building’s authentic character as a “Turkish House.” Earlier renovations had altered many of its original features.

Using archival photographs and original architectural references, restoration teams meticulously repaired wooden doors, windows, ceilings, and floors to reflect the atmosphere of the late Ottoman period in which Atatürk was born. Infrastructure such as electrical and mechanical systems were modernized, while the courtyard was repaved in stone and its walls reconstructed.

When it reopens, the three-story museum will host exhibitions across its levels — focusing on the building’s history, local ethnographic culture, and Atatürk’s early life.

The Atatürk House remains one of the most visited heritage sites for Turkish citizens abroad, attracting around half a million visitors in 2024.

Çıntar Mushrooms Hit the Market at 350–400 TL per Kilo

Fethiye, MUĞLA – The much-loved çıntar mushroom, a seasonal delicacy that grows naturally in the highlands of Fethiye, Seydikemer, and the forests of Çameli in Denizli, has appeared in local farmers’ markets — selling for 350–400 TL per kilogram.

Thanks to recent sudden rainfall in the mountainous areas surrounding Fethiye and Seydikemer, this year’s çıntar yield has noticeably increased, delighting both foragers and food enthusiasts.

At the Friday farmers’ market in Fethiye, vendors reported that demand remains strong despite the high price. The earthy, vitamin-rich mushroom is a staple of the local autumn season, particularly enjoyed grilled or fried with eggs.

Market vendor Recep Karagöz said the mushrooms are mostly collected from Çameli and nearby highland forests, adding:

“We sell them for 400 TL per kilo. These first çıntars, which emerge with the first rains, are very good in quality. Most customers buy by the half-kilo. With more rain expected, supplies will increase and prices should come down. Çıntar is not only delicious but also full of vitamins.”

As the season continues, locals anticipate more abundant harvests and more affordable prices, making the arrival of çıntar one of the highlights of autumn in Fethiye.

Barn Fire in Seydikemer: 700 Hay Bales Destroyed

Seydikemer, MUĞLA – A fire broke out in a barn located in the Gölbent neighbourhood of Seydikemer, resulting in the destruction of approximately 700 hay bales.

The blaze, which reportedly started for unknown reasons, quickly engulfed the structure, causing extensive damage before firefighters arrived on the scene.

Upon receiving the alert, teams from the Seydikemer Group Command of the Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department were promptly dispatched. Thanks to their swift and intensive efforts, the flames were brought under control, successfully preventing the fire from spreading to nearby buildings and farmland.

While no injuries were reported, the barn sustained significant property damage, and an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire.

Record Demolition Plan Begins in Muğla! Countdown Begins for 20,000 Illegal Buildings

Fethiye, MUĞLA – A large-scale demolition campaign has begun across Muğla as part of intensified efforts to combat illegal construction in the region.

Record Demolition Plan Begins in Muğla!

Operations launched in the Marmaris and Menteşe districts have already gained momentum, targeting structures built in violation of zoning regulations. In Akbük Bay, Menteşe, demolition teams began tearing down 30 illegal buildings yesterday, while work continues on 157 more in Marmaris.

Before the demolitions, teams evacuated the buildings, and gendarmerie and municipal police units took security measures in the area. Prefabricated houses and other unlawful structures were dismantled one by one using heavy machinery.

Authorities emphasized their determination, stating, “Our stance against illegal construction is clear. All structures for which legal proceedings have been completed will be demolished one by one.”

According to official information, there are around 20,000 illegal buildings across Muğla awaiting demolition orders. Following the operations in Menteşe and Marmaris, similar actions are expected to begin soon in Fethiye, Bodrum, Datça, Ula, and Milas.

Particular attention is now turning to Fethiye, where unlicensed construction has surged in recent years. Residents and local observers are watching closely to see when this record-breaking demolition plan will begin — and how it will reshape the landscape of the region once dubbed an “illegal building paradise.”

Safari Vehicles Collide: Injury Toll Rises to 11

Manavgat, ANTALYA – The number of injured has risen to 11 following a traffic accident in Antalya’s Manavgat district, where two safari vehicles collided and one overturned. Among the injured are 10 foreign tourists — four Swedish, four British, and two Polish nationals — along with the driver of one of the vehicles.

The accident occurred in the Kır area of the Sarılar neighborhood when a safari vehicle traveling toward Naras collided head-on with another safari vehicle coming from the opposite direction.

The impact caused one vehicle to overturn, leaving the driver and his passengers trapped. Emergency services were quickly dispatched after a report was received by the 112 Emergency Call Center. Teams from the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department Manavgat Unit, 112 medical crews, and gendarmerie traffic units from the Sarılar Gendarmerie Station responded to the scene.

After first aid was administered on site, the injured were transported by ambulance to hospitals in Manavgat for further treatment.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident, which occurred during a popular tourist safari route.

Kahramanmaraş Named Turkey’s First UNESCO City of Literature

Kahramanmaraş, TURKEY – The Turkish city of Kahramanmaraş has been officially designated a UNESCO City of Literature, becoming the first city in Turkey to receive this prestigious recognition.

“Kahramanmaraş became the first city from Turkey to be selected in this field by joining this prestigious network in the ‘literature’ category,” Metropolitan Mayor Fırat Görgel announced on Friday.

The decision was revealed in Paris during World Cities Day events, according to UNESCO. Mayor Görgel noted that the city’s deep literary heritage, rich poetic tradition, and vibrant cultural scene played a crucial role in highlighting its literary identity both nationally and internationally.

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay announced 58 new members of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) on World Cities Day 2025, bringing the total number of participating cities to 408 across more than 100 countries.

For the first time, UNESCO also introduced a new category — Creative Cities of Architecture — joining the existing seven creative fields: Crafts and Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts, and Music.

“UNESCO Creative Cities demonstrate that culture and creative industries can be concrete drivers of development,” Azoulay said. “By welcoming 58 new cities, we are strengthening a network where creativity supports local initiatives, attracts investments, and promotes social cohesion.”

This year, ten cities were named UNESCO Cities of Literature: Aberystwyth (Wales), Abuja (Nigeria), Celje (Slovenia), Conakry (Guinea), Dumaguete City (Philippines), Gdansk (Poland), Kahramanmaraş (Turkey), Lund (Sweden), San Luis Potosí (Mexico), and Tangier (Morocco).

The latest additions bring the total number of UNESCO Cities of Literature to 63 worldwide.

Storm Snaps Tree Branches in Two Separate Incidents Across Fethiye

Fethiye, MUĞLA – Heavy rain and strong winds that hit Fethiye on Tuesday disrupted daily life and caused two separate incidents across the district.

In the Fethiye Industrial Zone, powerful gusts of wind snapped a tree branch, which was captured on camera as it broke under the force of the storm. The sudden weather change brought heavy rainfall and strong gusts that affected visibility and traffic in the area.

In a second incident, a large branch snapped from a tree in one of Fethiye’s busiest areas and fell onto a parked car, causing material damage. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene and quickly removed the fallen branch from the vehicle. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Authorities reminded residents to exercise caution during periods of heavy rain and strong winds, as unstable trees and loose materials can pose risks during stormy conditions.

Fishmonger’s Warning: Know Your Anchovies Before You Buy!

Fethiye, MUĞLA – Fisherman Mahir Kahya, one of the well-known vendors at the Fethiye Fish Market, has issued an important warning to residents about the varieties and prices of anchovies currently being sold. Kahya explained that there are several different types of anchovies and cautioned customers that the fish sold at lower prices in some places are not Black Sea anchovies.

Kahya said, “When you think of anchovies, the Black Sea comes to mind first, but there are actually several varieties. There are four different types: Çanakkale anchovies, İzmir anchovies, Marmara anchovies, and Black Sea anchovies. The best and most delicious of these is the Black Sea anchovy. Black Sea anchovies are currently doing very well — their price has dropped from 500 TL to 300 TL. They are caught in abundance every day and are frequently seen on the stalls.”

Emphasizing that the price of anchovies depends on the catch, Kahya noted, “When Black Sea anchovies are scarce, prices rise. The more they are found, the lower the price; when they are scarce, the higher it goes. While Black Sea anchovies currently cost around 300 TL per kilo in our region, some people are selling them for 150–200 TL. If a product is being sold for significantly less than its value, it is either not Black Sea anchovies or there is a problem with the product.”

Kahya also explained that anchovies are categorized by size, saying, “Anchovies are divided into three groups: small, medium, and large, and priced accordingly. Currently, the most popular choice on the shelves is the medium-sized Black Sea anchovy. Marmara anchovies are generally large but dry, while İzmir anchovies have a drier flavor. Not everyone may be aware of these differences, so it’s best to consult reputable fishmongers when shopping.”

Kahya concluded by advising residents to buy only from trusted vendors to ensure they get genuine, high-quality Black Sea anchovies.

Rehabilitation Work Continues on Toptaş Stream in Fethiye

Fethiye, MUĞLA – Rehabilitation work on Toptaş Stream, carried out by the State Hydraulic Works (DSİ), is continuing at full speed in the Fethiye district of Muğla. The project, coordinated by the DSİ 21st Regional Directorate, aims to improve safety and prevent flooding in the area.

As part of the rehabilitation efforts, cleanup, channel alignment, and landscaping work have been completed along the streambed, and the installation of guardrails has now begun.

Toptaş Stream, located in a region of Fethiye that is prone to flooding during heavy rains, has been a long-standing concern for residents. The DSİ stated that the project will enhance both life and property safety, while the new guardrails along the stream banks will improve pedestrian safety and enhance the overall environmental appearance of the area.

Authorities emphasized that the rehabilitation work on Toptaş Stream is part of broader efforts to reduce flood risks and strengthen urban infrastructure across Fethiye.

Saffron, the World’s Most Expensive Spice, Sells for 500 TL per Gram

Amasya, Turkey – Saffron, known as the world’s most expensive spice, is being sold for 500 TL per gram in Amasya, one of Turkey’s key saffron-producing provinces. The spice, often referred to as “red gold,” is harvested locally and used in various industries including food, textiles, perfume, and pharmaceuticals.

Officials from the Amasya Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry have warned consumers about counterfeit saffron products, advising buyers to purchase only from verified local producers.

Sefa Kılıç, Director of the Plant Production and Plant Health Branch at the provincial directorate, said that saffron’s high price is due to the intensive labor involved in its production.

“Saffron is considered ‘red gold’ in the areas where it is produced. One gram of dried saffron is obtained by harvesting around 150 flowers. It sells for 500 TL per gram,” Kılıç said.

He added that saffron cultivation currently covers 23 decares in Amasya and that the plant can be grown in fields, gardens, or even pots.

“Because saffron is so valuable, counterfeit versions are sometimes sold. Our province is one of the leading production areas, so consumers can safely buy saffron from local producers,” Kılıç explained.

Amasya Governor Önder Bakan, who attended the saffron harvest in Ayvalıpınar village of the Göynücek district, encouraged farmers to diversify their crops.

He noted that this year 12,000 decares of land were used for onion cultivation, which led to oversupply, while some farmers who tried alternative crops such as saffron fared better.

“Our farmers have long focused on traditional crops like onions and cherries. However, due to overproduction and issues like frost damage, we recommend that they also consider alternative crops,” the governor said.

The saffron harvest event was also attended by AK Party Provincial Chairman Galip Uzun, Göynücek District Governor Osman Demirgül, and other local officials.

Authorities stated that saffron cultivation in Amasya continues to expand each year, offering a profitable alternative for farmers seeking to diversify production and strengthen the region’s agricultural economy.

Republic Day, or Cumhuriyet Bayramı, commemorates the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey on 29 October 1923 and is one of the most important official public holidays and national festivals in the country.

History of Turkish Republic Day

On October 29, 1923, the newly recognized Turkish parliament proclaimed the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, formally marking the end of the Ottoman Empire. On the same day, Mustafa Kemal, who led the Turkish National War of Liberation and was later named Atatürk (father of Turks), was unanimously elected as the first president of the Republic.

“Gentlemen! We shall declare the republic tomorrow” is what modern Turkey’s founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk said on the night of October 28, 1923, as he addressed lawmakers and his close brothers-in-arms. One day later, the Turkish Parliament adopted the new regime type and elected Atatürk as the first president, as lawmakers were heard shouting, “Long live the Republic! Long live Mustafa Kemal Pasha!”

Turkey had effectively been a republic from April 23, 1920, when the Grand National Assembly was inaugurated in Ankara. When the Turkish parliament held its first session in 1920, virtually every corner of the crumbling Ottoman Empire was under the occupation of the Allied powers. Exasperated by the Ottoman government’s inability to fight the occupation, the nationwide resistance movement gained momentum. With the Allied occupation of Istanbul and the dissolution of the Ottoman Parliament, Mustafa Kemal’s justification for opening the resistance movement’s new legislative body was created.

Following the founding of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk embarked on a wide-ranging set of reforms in the political, economic and cultural aspects of Turkish society. These reforms have left a lasting legacy of which the peoples of Turkish heritage are proud: the conversion of the newly founded Republic into today’s modern, democratic and secular Turkish state.

How is Turkish Republic Day Celebrated?

The holiday lasts 35 hours, starting at 1:00 pm on October 28th.

Many people go to local stadiums on October 29 to watch performances dedicated to Republic Day. Such performances usually consist of theatre sketches, poetry readings and traditional Turkish dances. Many schoolchildren participate in school performances for parents and teachers. Parades may take place in some cities and politicians may give public speeches on this day.

People lay wreaths at the many statues of Atatürk across the country or visit Atatürk’s mausoleum in the country’s capital, Ankara.

On the evening of October 29, many cities have traditional processions with flags and musical bands to commemorate Republic Day in Turkey. The processions usually end with fireworks, which begin after dark.

The common symbols of Republic Day in Turkey are the Turkish flag and pictures of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

Republic Day is an official national holiday in Turkey. Public administration buildings, schools, post offices and many small businesses are usually closed on this day. Public transport schedules may vary. Public transport routes may change in the event of street performances and processions. The afternoon of the previous day, October 28, is also an official holiday.

In 2023, Turkey marked its centenary with nationwide celebrations. You can read more about the far-reaching political, social and cultural reforms that decisively changed the country here: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/oct/29/100-years-of-the-republic-of-turkey-in-pictures
