Temiz Fethiye” Campaign Continues to Gather Momentum

Fethiye, Muğla — The Temiz Fethiye (Clean Fethiye) campaign continues to gain momentum, reaching an ever-wider audience as efforts to protect and preserve the district’s natural beauty intensify.

A large-scale cleanup operation was recently carried out on Çalış Beach, with the participation of officials and employees from international tour operators, chamber presidents, and local citizens. Together, they joined forces to collect litter and raise awareness about the importance of keeping the coastline clean.

Fethiye Municipality teams are working day and night to maintain cleanliness across the region. Strict measures are also being enforced — individuals caught littering or throwing cigarette butts from vehicles are subject to penalties, supported by camera monitoring and citizen reports.

Mayor Karaca called on everyone to take responsibility for protecting the local environment:

“If we all work together, we can leave our paradise of Fethiye a cleaner and more livable place for future generations. I invite everyone to be mindful and take part in keeping our city clean.”

The Temiz Fethiye campaign continues to inspire residents, businesses, and visitors alike to contribute to a more sustainable and beautiful future for Fethiye.

Torrential Rain Paralyses Fethiye

Fethiye, Muğla — Summer came to an abrupt and dramatic end in Fethiye as torrential rain battered the district, bringing 130 kilograms of rain per square meter in just two hours. The sudden downpour paralysed daily life, flooding homes and businesses, stranding tourists in Ölüdeniz, and turning the area’s iconic turquoise waters into murky brown.

Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca described the situation as a major disaster, saying, “We are combating disasters in every corner of Fethiye.”

One of the areas worst affected by the storm was the world-famous Ölüdeniz neighborhood, where manholes overflowed, streets turned into lakes, and the ground floors of several hotels were flooded. Tourists trapped by the rising water were safely evacuated to higher ground with the help of hotel staff. The normally dazzling blue of the Ölüdeniz Lagoon was replaced by muddy waters as rain and runoff poured down from the surrounding hills.

As the rain subsided, AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency), the fire department, and municipal teams launched extensive cleanup and drainage operations. Water pumps were deployed to clear flooded streets and alleyways, while emergency crews worked tirelessly to restore access and provide assistance to residents and businesses affected by the storm.

In a statement following the floods, Mayor Karaca emphasized the scale of the disaster and the coordinated response:

“We are facing a major disaster. For two days, we, the Meteorological Service, the Governor’s Office, the District Governor’s Office, and ourselves have been warning our people. However, 130 kilograms of rain fell per square meter in just two hours. We are currently combating the disaster in every corner of Fethiye with the full staff of AFAD, MUSKİ, and the Fethiye Municipality.”

Karaca also drew attention to Fethiye’s ongoing infrastructure challenges, noting that the heavy rains once again highlighted the need for improvement:

“We have placed great importance on infrastructure for the past five years. However, there were those who opposed this. Today, we are proving how right we were. We must undertake further infrastructure work in Fethiye. In the coming period, we will work together with the State Hydraulic Works, Muğla Metropolitan Municipality, MUSKİ, and the Fethiye Municipality to find lasting solutions.”

Cleanup efforts are continuing across the district as authorities assess the damage and work to prevent further disruption.

After the day of relentless rain in Fethiye, the skies finally cleared, giving way to sunshine and a spectacular rainbow stretching across the horizon.

Seydikemer Mayor Akdenizli Inspects Infrastructure After Heavy Rainfall

Seydikemer, Muğla — Following the recent heavy rainfall that affected the region, Seydikemer Mayor Bayram Önder Akdenizli carried out inspections in several neighborhoods to assess the condition of local infrastructure and address issues caused by the downpour.

Mayor Akdenizli emphasized that the municipality is taking swift and proactive measures to minimize the impact of severe weather on daily life.

“We are taking precautions against potential problems and quickly addressing infrastructure and transportation disruptions. Our teams are on the ground 24/7, on high alert,” he said.

Municipal teams continue to monitor vulnerable areas, focusing on road maintenance, drainage improvements, and rapid response to reports from residents. The inspections aim to ensure that Seydikemer remains prepared for further adverse weather conditions and that recovery efforts proceed efficiently.

Saklıkent Gorge Closed Due to Rising Water Levels After Heavy Rain

Fethiye, Muğla — Due to the heavy rainfall affecting Fethiye and Seydikemer, water levels in Saklıkent Gorge have risen significantly, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures.

For safety reasons, Saklıkent Gorge has been temporarily closed to visitors until the water level returns to normal. Officials have urged residents and tourists to avoid the area and warned that conditions may remain hazardous until the situation stabilizes.

Municipal teams continue to monitor the gorge closely, ensuring that all safety measures are in place and ready to reopen the site once it is safe for the public.

New Procedure Coming for Radars Provoking Citizen Outcry

Ankara, Turkey — The General Assembly of Parliament is set to begin discussions next week on radical changes to the Highway Traffic Law, sparking public debate and concern.

Under the proposed regulations, drivers would receive warnings before approaching radar points through a government-developed app called “Radar Var” (Radar Available). The move aims to improve road safety by alerting motorists in advance, but it has also drawn criticism from citizens who fear it could encourage speeding and reduce the effectiveness of enforcement.

In addition to the app, the new law is expected to bring significant changes to speed limits, radar enforcement, and traffic fines, potentially impacting drivers nationwide. Lawmakers and traffic authorities will discuss the full scope of the changes in the coming sessions, while the public continues to voice mixed reactions.

The debate over the proposal highlights the ongoing tension between road safety measures and drivers’ concerns over enforcement and fines.

World Animal Protection Day Event in Fethiye Raises Funds for Stray Animals

Fethiye, Muğla — A special event was held in Fethiye to commemorate World Animal Protection Day, with all proceeds dedicated to the treatment and veterinary expenses of stray animals. The event saw participation from all local animal associations, and stands were set up to raise awareness about loggerhead sea turtles and local bird species.

Sponsored by the Doğa Dostu (DODO) Association and the Fethiye Tourism, Promotion, Education, Culture and Environment Foundation (FETAV), the event featured handcrafted items, souvenirs, books, jewelry, and homemade food for sale, with all proceeds going toward supporting stray animals.

DODO Association President Gökçen Gökmen Bayram highlighted the significance of the day:

“World Animal Protection Day is celebrated worldwide, but we consider it a day of remembrance. We are here for the lives we lost. We are waiting for the law to be amended, and we are not giving up. We will continue to feed and treat them peacefully.”

She also emphasized that a special stand had been set up to raise awareness about loggerhead sea turtles.

Loggerhead and birdwatcher Ali İhsan Emre added:

“Today is both World Animal Protection Day and World Birdwatching Day. In the morning, we went birdwatching with a group of 25 nature lovers from Burdur and Bodrum. We observed the Terek Sandpiper, a bird seen for the first time in Muğla. Many people don’t know that the Çalış region is a bird sanctuary. We ask that our citizens support our nature, our birds, and our loggerheads.”

FETAV Director Dilek Dinçer noted that the event will continue for two days:

“We embarked on this meaningful journey with the DODO Association. The participation was very positive. Proceeds will be used entirely for veterinary expenses for stray animals.”

The event successfully combined awareness, fundraising, and community engagement, highlighting Fethiye’s commitment to protecting its wildlife and caring for stray animals.

Baby Born in Taxi During Emergency Ride in Adana

Adana, Turkey — A routine taxi ride in Adana turned into an unforgettable moment when a pregnant woman gave birth inside the vehicle on her way to the hospital. Both mother and baby are reported to be in good health.

The incident occurred in the Sümer neighborhood of Seyhan district when taxi driver Samet Aygün (30) responded to an emergency call from a taxi rank. He picked up the Syrian Yesen family and set off toward the hospital. During the ride, the mother’s labor intensified, and she gave birth to a baby boy inside the taxi. The umbilical cord was cut by a medical team outside the hospital before mother and child were safely taken inside.

Describing the experience to İHA, Aygün said:

“I was sitting at the bus stop having tea when I received an emergency call. I immediately went to the address and picked up the family. While on the road, the woman suddenly gave birth in my car. I heard the baby’s cry, which was overwhelming. We got her to the hospital, and the nurse cut the umbilical cord in the taxi. Both mother and baby are in good health.”

As a special gesture, Aygün announced that his taxi company, Evren Taxi, will provide free transportation for baby Yesen and her family in the future.

“We will no longer charge taxi fares for baby Yesen and her family,” he said.

The story has touched many in the community, marking a remarkable and heartwarming moment for both the family and the taxi driver.

Renovation Work at Fethiye Municipality Animal Shelter Progressing Rapidly

FETHIYE, MUĞLA — Renovation work at the Fethiye Municipality Animal Shelter is moving forward at pace, following the completion of the allocation process earlier this year.

Municipal officials carried out on-site inspections on Monday, reviewing the current progress of construction, meeting with shelter staff, and visiting the animals under care.

Once completed, the shelter will span 37 acres, featuring 1,950 square metres of indoor space across 21 separate blocks. The facility will include a reception building, administrative units, a fully equipped operating room, specially designed kennels for cats, dogs, and horses, as well as paddock areas.

Fethiye Municipality emphasised that the project is being carried out with meticulous attention to detail, with the aim of providing the best possible conditions for the animals.

Greenhouse Farming in Fethiye Faces an Uncertain Future

FETHIYE, MUĞLA — While Fethiye is widely recognised as one of Turkey’s leading tourism destinations, agriculture remains a vital source of livelihood for many residents, particularly in rural neighbourhoods. Yet, greenhouse producers say the sector is under growing pressure as rising costs and falling prices threaten their survival.

Greenhouse farming, traditionally a cornerstone of Fethiye’s agricultural economy, is losing its appeal. Producers face mounting expenses from the outset, covering everything from greenhouse nylon and steel to irrigation systems, seedlings, pesticides, fertilisers, and even the rental of beehives for pollination. Seasonal challenges such as heavy rains and winter frosts add further strain, leaving many farmers burdened with debt before their crops are ready for market.

Once harvest begins, growers often turn to the Karaçulha Wholesale Market to sell their produce. However, despite production costs that require a minimum price of 30 Turkish Lira per kilogram to break even, tomatoes and other vegetables are typically sold for just 10 to 15 Lira per kilogram—forcing many producers to operate at a loss.

The financial pressure means farmers frequently carry debt into the next season. In some cases, producers have even begun dismantling existing greenhouses to build new ones, hoping to cut losses and adapt to changing conditions.

Local growers warn that unless structural issues are addressed, Fethiye’s agricultural sector—long a backbone of the district’s economy—could face an uncertain future.

President Kökten: “Ölüdeniz’s Chronic Problem Must Be Solved Urgently”

ÖLÜDENIZ, FETHIYE — Muhammet Kökten, President of the Ölüdeniz Tourism Development Cooperative, has called for urgent action to address long-standing infrastructure problems that resurface whenever heavy rain hits the region.

Following Monday’s’s rainfall, which caused damage to local businesses, Kökten expressed his condolences to tradespeople who suffered financial losses. He stressed that the flooding issue has persisted for years, describing it as a “chronic problem” in Ölüdeniz.

“We experience the same problem every time it rains. The reason for this is a problem that has persisted throughout Ölüdeniz’s history. To solve this, sedimentation basins need to be built where the stream begins and a drainage system needs to be established,” Kökten said.

He underlined that the issue not only disrupts daily life but also places a recurring financial burden on local tradespeople, many of whom face losses year after year. Kökten reiterated his call for a permanent solution, urging authorities to act swiftly in constructing the necessary drainage infrastructure.

Foreign Tourists Keep Boat Tours Busy in Fethiye during September

Fethiye, Muğla – Boat operators in Fethiye reported that September was marked by a noticeable drop in domestic tourism, while foreign visitors, particularly from the UK and Russia, filled the gap.

Alparslan Yalçın, a boat owner and operator in the district, said the season has been lively thanks to international tourists. “There are a lot of foreign tourists right now. We’re having a great season with our British and Russian guests. I also have regulars who have been coming for 10 years, and I’ll be hosting them again this week,” he noted.

Yalçın explained that his boat tours offer guests a full experience with breakfast, an open buffet lunch, fruit service in the afternoon, and four to five swimming stops during the day. He added that reservations remain strong and that tours will continue on his private boat until mid-November.

Looking back on the 2025 season, Yalçın said it had been generally positive but not without challenges. “Thankfully, 2025 was a good year. However, tourism is still struggling compared to the past. The high cost of living has reduced the number of domestic tourists, and even foreign visitors aren’t coming in the same numbers as before. British tourists carried us through July, August, and September,” he said.

Despite the difficulties, Yalçın expressed optimism that foreign demand would remain steady through October, extending the season for Fethiye’s popular boat tours.

Fethiye Fisherman Göztepe: “The Old Fishing Industry is Gone”

Fethiye, Muğla – Long-time fisherman Gürol Göztepe has voiced concern over the decline of traditional fishing in Fethiye, saying that both technology and climate change have contributed to the dwindling fish population.

Göztepe, who has been fishing in the region for more than 30 years, reflected on how much the industry has changed. “We go out every two to three days and sell the fish we catch on the beach and at markets. There used to be more fish, but now, with the advent of technology, the fish have diminished. Scanning devices detect the fish, and large purse seines catch them all. We fish with hooks and nets,” he explained.

He noted that the shift has pushed many fishermen to seek work elsewhere. “Most people have now turned to tourism, captaining, and sailing. Some fish in the winter, but in the summer, they mostly engage in boat tourism,” Göztepe said.

At his stall, where he was selling halibut and leer fish, Göztepe lamented the loss of abundance. “There’s no longer the richness of the old days. The number of fishermen has decreased, while the number of people working in tourism has increased,” he added.

According to Göztepe, the once-thriving fishing culture of Fethiye has gradually given way to a tourism-driven economy, leaving traditional fishing a fading livelihood.

Industrial Climbers Secure Risky Slopes After Floods in Artvin

Artvin, Turkey – Industrial climbers have been deployed to stabilize risky slopes in Artvin following last week’s heavy rains, floods, and landslides that battered the Black Sea province.

Working under the coordination of the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) and the General Directorate of Highways, the climbers scale steep mountain cliffs in full safety gear. Using controlled methods, including levers and jacks, they remove loose rocks to prevent them from falling onto the roads below, ensuring safer passage for drivers.

Videos released from the operations show teams working in perilous conditions, carefully dislodging unstable rocks along the region’s vulnerable slopes.

On September 21, torrential rains triggered floods and landslides across several Black Sea provinces, damaging infrastructure and forcing precautionary evacuations. In Artvin’s Borçka district, floodwaters swept away farmland and guesthouses, while the historic three-arched stone bridge collapsed after the river overflowed.

Although most flood and landslide debris has now been cleared, the slope stabilization work continues as a precaution. Officials say the efforts are vital to prevent future accidents along Artvin’s steep mountain roads, which remain prone to erosion and landslides.

Artvin Governor Turan Ergün stressed that authorities are working tirelessly to restore daily life. “We’ve opened our roads to traffic by working day and night, except for a few neighborhoods. The biggest relief is that no lives were lost,” Ergün said.

Local residents have expressed their appreciation for the high-risk work carried out by the climbers. “The work they do is extremely dangerous. Watching them, you feel fear, but their dedication keeps the roads safe,” said Hakan Aydın, a driver who frequently travels the routes.

The operations are expected to continue until all high-risk slopes are secured.

Turkey Eyes Bigger Slice of Global Gastronomy Tourism

Ankara – Turkey is stepping up efforts to expand its share of global gastronomy tourism, recognizing food as one of the most powerful motivators for international travel.

Gastronomy tourism has grown into a trillion-dollar global industry, with many travelers crossing continents to experience local cuisines. Studies show that food-focused tourists spend up to seven times more than regular visitors, making gastronomy a vital part of tourism strategies worldwide.

In Turkey, gastronomy already accounts for nearly 20 percent of total tourism income, and officials are working to build on this momentum. According to official data, visitors spent nearly $11.7 billion on food and beverages in 2024, while more than 900,000 people were employed in food and beverage services by mid-2025 — nearly half of all tourism-related jobs.

Experts say Turkey could strengthen its position by developing a national gastronomy map, promoting culinary tours abroad, and turning food festivals into established international traditions. They also recommend spotlighting regional specialties, strengthening gastronomy education, and elevating the global profile of signature dishes as part of the country’s cultural heritage.

The Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA) has been spearheading efforts through its “Deliciously Turkey” campaigns, with gastronomy featured in marketing across 200 countries. On Instagram, Turkey’s official “GoTürkiye” account shares images of both iconic staples like baklava and kebab and lesser-known dishes such as mantı (dumplings served with yogurt and spices) and sarma (vine leaves stuffed with rice and herbs), drawing strong engagement worldwide.

Food-centered festivals are also expanding. “Gastro” editions of the nationwide Culture Route Festivals have brought culinary celebrations to cities such as Konya, Bursa, and Gaziantep, while celebrity chefs and food influencers increasingly spotlight Turkish cuisine on global platforms.

Restaurants featured in the Michelin Guide are playing a growing role in attracting visitors as well. Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Ersoy noted that these establishments “support not only tourism but also local producers and suppliers,” linking fine dining to broader economic benefits.

Turkey’s culinary heritage has also gained international recognition. The provinces of Gaziantep and Hatay and the city of Afyonkarahisar are members of UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network for gastronomy, underscoring the country’s diverse and historic food culture.

As global appetite for authentic culinary experiences continues to grow, Turkey aims to position itself not only as a destination for sun and sea, but also as a world-class hub for gastronomy tourism.

Thank you to Pearl Flynn Bulut for the updates and to Stephen for taking the time to talk with us.

Retired firefighter Stephen Aslin, 58, has set off on an extraordinary 30,000-mile global cycling journey — one mile for every pound he hopes to raise to honour the 72 lives lost in the Grenfell Tower fire.

Stephen, who grew up in the area and served as station officer at North Kensington Fire Station during the final four years of his career, says the disaster left a profound mark on his friends, colleagues, and the local community.

“A schoolfriend of ours died in the fire,” he explained. “This challenge is a remembrance for Ernie Vital, his mother Marjorie, and the other 70 people who lost their lives.”

Along the way, he is stopping at fire stations and community hubs, sharing his story and raising funds for projects that help children impacted by the tragedy.

Stephen’s 18-month journey will take him through Turkey, with planned stops in Fethiye, Antalya, and then on to Cappadocia before continuing to Georgia. From there, he will head to Kazakhstan, India, the Far East, Australia, and finally the United States, aiming to arrive in New York in September 2026 for the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Travelling solo with no support vehicle, he plans to cycle approximately 100 kilometres a day, five days a week, with two rest days, carefully considering changes in temperature and layering for varying climates along the route.

“I aim to cycle 100 kilometres a day, five days a week, with two days of rest,” said Stephen “Everything is for the children.”

Stephen Arrives in Fethiye

Stephen arrived in Fethiye on Thursday 25th September, where he received a warm welcome from local supporters. He first visited the town 38 years ago and described it as a profound experience to see how much it has changed and developed. During this visit, he attended a show at the VIP Lounge in Ölüdeniz, where The Sensations delivered an emotional speech and organised a collection in his honour.

Overwhelmed by the warmth and generosity of local people, he extended his stay by an extra day, joining friends at Paradise Beach before continuing his journey to Antalya on Monday.

Support Stephen and the Grenfell Foundation

Every pound raised on Stephen’s incredible journey will go directly to youth projects run by the Grenfell Foundation, helping bereaved families, supporting survivors, and strengthening the wider West London community.

Disaster Drill at Fethiye State Hospital Simulates Real-Life Emergency

Fethiye, Muğla – A disaster and emergency drill held in the garden of Fethiye State Hospital replicated the urgency and intensity of a real emergency, testing the hospital’s readiness for disaster response.

The exercise simulated a collapse in the Göcek Tunnel, with 22 injured people transported to the hospital by ambulance. The National Medical Rescue Team (UMKE) and hospital staff implemented the green, yellow, and red triage coding system to prioritize patients. According to the scenario, 12 students acted as minor injuries, 8 as moderate, and 2 as severe. The drill allowed healthcare teams to anticipate potential challenges in emergency coordination and patient care.

Chief Physician Yavuz Okulu praised the hospital teams, saying:

“Our colleagues conducted the drill very well indeed. When we received news that approximately 20 people were injured in the Göcek Tunnel during the drill, we took the necessary precautions, informed our colleagues, and provided medical attention to the injured. We treated a total of 22 patients, two of whom were red, eight were yellow, and twelve were green, and completed their procedures successfully.”

Hospital HAP Officer and Civil Defense Supervisor Can Alptekin emphasized the importance of basing drills on realistic scenarios:

“I was appointed as the hospital civil defense supervisor, and I am fulfilling this duty. At the behest of our chief physician, we decided to conduct the drill this year, themed ‘Göcek Tunnel Collapse.’ We want to make the drills as realistic as possible. Instead of focusing on scenarios like potential landslides and avalanches in our area, we focus on situations that could actually occur and lead to accidents. We are also working to raise awareness among our personnel. To eliminate the question of, ‘We conduct drills, but what would we do if an accident actually happened?’, we conduct all our drills and raise awareness among our colleagues.”

The drill concluded successfully, strengthening preparedness and ensuring Fethiye State Hospital teams are better equipped to respond swiftly and effectively to potential disasters.

Seydikemer, Muğla – Two German tourists and a Turkish citizen who lost their way while hiking the Lycian Way were rescued after a two-hour operation carried out by the Gendarmerie Search and Rescue (JAK) and National Medical Rescue (UMKE) teams.

Police Inspect Nearly 30 Nightclubs in Fethiye

In Fethiye, police teams carried out extensive inspections of nightclubs located in the Paspatur Bazaar, one of the district’s busiest nightlife areas. Legal action was initiated against businesses found to have missing or incomplete documents.

The operation, led by the Fethiye District Police Department Public Security Bureau, involved checks on nearly 30 venues in the Paspatur Bars area, 95th and 96th Streets, and the Fish Market. During the inspections, officials reviewed Live Music Certificates issued by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Live Music Sound Device Location Diagrams, Identity Declaration Forms, and employees’ Social Security Institution (SGK) records. Noise warning signs were also examined.

While many venues were found to be in compliance, those with deficiencies were formally warned. In addition, citizens present in the venues underwent General Information Screening (GBT) to identify any wanted individuals.

Police officials emphasized that inspections will intensify, especially in nightlife-heavy areas, to ensure public safety and regulatory compliance.

President Kökten: “Tourism in Ölüdeniz Started Badly, But Will End Well”

Ölüdeniz, Muğla – Muhammet Kökten, President of the Ölüdeniz Tourism Development and Beautification Association, announced that the 2025 tourism season, which began later than expected, is now ending on a strong note.

Kökten stated that occupancy rates in September exceeded expectations and are projected to remain high in October, thanks to growing international demand. He noted that Chinese tourists are expected to arrive in significant numbers at the end of September and the first week of October, bringing an important boost to local businesses during the low season.

Emphasizing the need for diversification, Kökten said the region must expand into digital promotion, cultural, sports, and health tourism to reduce dependency on traditional sea-and-sand tourism. “Tourism started badly, but will end well,” he added, expressing optimism for the close of the season.

Seki Residents Protest TOKİ Housing: “Keep Our Meadow Green”

Seki, Antalya – Residents of the Seki neighborhood, home to the historic Horse Meadow where shepherds graze their animals and traditional oil wrestling matches are held, have voiced strong opposition to the construction of multi-story TOKİ housing on the land.

The 96-acre parcel, officially transferred free of charge to the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, is planned for development by TOKİ (Housing Development Administration of Turkey). Locals fear the project will erase an area central to their cultural heritage, agriculture, and livestock farming.

The Seki and Surroundings Beautification, Aid, Solidarity and Development Association has organized a public meeting for Friday, September 26 at 2:00 PM at the Seki Coffeehouse. During the meeting, Attorney Bora Sarıca and Suat Selvi, the Fethiye representative of the Chamber of Architects, will provide legal and technical information.

Association President Atiye Kaçar stressed the community’s stance: “We are not opposed to TOKİ building housing; however, it is vital for our meadow to remain pastureland, to protect our water resources, and for our agriculture and livestock farming. We do not want TOKİ housing in the meadowland. Sports fields can be built in the meadowland instead.”

Residents argue that Seki Meadow, also known as Atçayırı (Horse Grass), is not just pasture but also the venue for one of the region’s most historic traditions — oil wrestling — as valuable as the renowned Kırkpınar Wrestling. It is also a gathering place for seasonal highlanders and a social hub for the community.

Locals have begun mobilizing on social media and are preparing to file a lawsuit to stop the housing project. Lawyers have advised that legal applications must be submitted by October 15, both by the association and through individual petitions to strengthen the case as a matter of public interest.

Residents propose that the meadow instead be used for sports fields, golf courses, or parks, arguing that “multi-story buildings would turn Seki into a concrete jungle.” They suggest that TOKİ use other state-owned lands in the area for housing development.

Kaçar reiterated: “Our meadow is the heart of Seki. It must remain open, green, and public. We are calling on all Seki residents to join us in protecting it.”

Irish Wingsuit Pilot Soars Past Sümela Monastery in Stunning Aerial Display

Trabzon, Turkey – The dramatic cliffs of Trabzon’s Maçka district provided a breathtaking backdrop as Irish wingsuit pilot Michael Morann glided past the ancient Sümela Monastery, one of Turkey’s most iconic landmarks.

Perched 300 meters above the Altındere Valley, Sümela Monastery is a UNESCO Tentative World Heritage Site and a major destination for faith tourism. For the first time, it also became the setting for a wingsuit “bat flight,” with Morann reaching speeds of up to 250 kilometers per hour.

Launching from a paragliding platform, Morann captured his high-speed descent on an action camera before safely deploying his parachute to land in the valley below. His flight added Sümela to a growing list of extreme sports venues in Turkey, following his earlier wingsuit jump over Uzungöl, another popular tourism hub in the region.

Wingsuit flying, often called “batman flight,” uses a specialized suit with fabric stretched between the arms and legs to slow free fall and allow pilots to glide through the air before opening a parachute.

With the monastery clinging to the mountainside and Morann slicing through the skies above, the flight offered a dramatically new perspective on one of Turkey’s most breathtaking heritage sites. Turkey has increasingly hosted high-profile extreme performances in recent years, including a daring tightrope walk across the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul, linking Europe and Asia.

Turkey Withdraws Döner Kebab Bid in the European Union

Istanbul, Turkey – Turkey has officially withdrawn its bid to have döner kebab recognized as a “traditional specialty guaranteed” within the European Union, ending a years-long culinary dispute.

The Istanbul-based International Döner Federation (UDOFED) had submitted the application to ensure that döner sold across the EU would be prepared exclusively in the Turkish style, following Turkey’s traditional recipes. Approval would have restricted the use of veal or turkey meat and required restaurants to adhere to Turkey’s specific preparation methods.

An EU Commission spokesperson confirmed that UDOFED officially withdrew the application on September 23, closing the registration process. No official reason was given, but EU insiders suggest the withdrawal may have been intended to avoid an imminent rejection.

Germany had led the opposition, citing the size and economic importance of the local döner sector. German politicians argued that local vendors and consumers should decide how döner is prepared and eaten. Media reports noted that approval of Turkey’s bid could have restricted or banned the standard German-style döner — often served with yogurt-based sauces, fresh vegetables, or wrapped in flatbread — potentially affecting up to 60,000 jobs.

According to UDOFED consultant Huriye Özener, Turkey’s intention was never to harm foreign markets. The application aimed to preserve the traditional preparation and cultural roots of Turkish döner while ensuring recognition that the dish originates from Turkey.

The European Turkish Döner Producers Association estimates that around 400 tons of döner are produced daily across Europe, generating roughly €2.4 billion annually in Germany and €3.5 billion across the continent.

Fethiye Sees September Influx of Chinese Tourists

FETHIYE, MUĞLAFethiye has recorded a sharp rise in Chinese arrivals this year, with more than 85,000 visiting the resort town and over 22,000 taking tandem paragliding flights from Babadağ to Ölüdeniz.

Official figures show that of the 409,000 Chinese tourists who visited Turkey in 2024, one in five chose Fethiye, drawn by its beaches, ancient sites and adventure sports.

Tourism officials credit the increase to strengthened ties between Turkey and China. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism, along with the Fethiye Tourism Council and the Chamber of Commerce, has stepped up promotional work in the Chinese market. The declaration of China Year in Turkey in 2019 and the filming of Chinese Survivor in Fethiye also boosted visibility before the pandemic.

Direct air links have expanded to meet demand. Weekly flights from China to Istanbul have more than doubled, from 21 to 49, lifting annual passenger capacity above one million. Talks are under way to improve domestic connections between Istanbul and Dalaman, the gateway to Fethiye.

Paragliding remains the biggest draw. Between January and September 2025, Babadağ hosted 145,959 flights. Turkish visitors led with 64,699 flights, followed by Chinese with 22,107, Russians with 17,817, Britons with 16,017 and Germans with 2,902.

FTSO chairman Osman Çıralı said hosting senior executives from Trip.com, China’s largest travel platform, would help secure further growth.

“We expect such events to significantly contribute to welcoming more Chinese tourists to our region,” he said. “With these events and promotions, the numbers will steadily increase in the coming years.”

Fethiye Volunteers Tackle Island Waste for Coastal Cleanup Day

FETHIYE, MUĞLA Around 110 kilograms of garbage were collected on Kızılada, one of Fethiye’s closest islands and a popular stop for day trippers, during an environmental campaign marking International Coastal Cleanup Day.

The cleanup was led by the Deniz Temiz Association (TURMEPA) with support from the IMEAK Chamber of Shipping’s Fethiye Branch. Participants included members of the Fethiye Kardelen Art Association, local companies and volunteer citizens.

Departing by boat from the Çalış area of Foça, the group spent about two hours clearing the island and its surroundings. The collected waste was carried to boats in garbage bags and later delivered to the Fethiye Municipality Recycling Facility.

TURMEPA official Ersin Özer thanked the volunteers for their efforts.

“We organized an awareness-raising event in and around Kızılada for International Coastal Cleanup Day. I would like to thank everyone who participated and supported this event,” she said.

From the Netherlands to Fethiye: A Journey of Hope for Earthquake-Struck Children

FETHIYE, MUĞLA Pedaling across seven countries in just over a month, Veysel Baldemir arrived in Fethiye this week after a 34-day cycling journey from the Netherlands — all to honor and support children orphaned by the devastating Hatay earthquake of February 2023.

Baldemir, a 50-year-old expatriate who has lived in the Netherlands for 45 years, undertook the challenge with the Hope4Antioch Foundation to raise awareness and funds for children who lost their families. His route took him through Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, and Rhodes before reaching the Turkish coast.

“I cycled for the children who lost their parents,” he said. “Along the way I spoke to people in every country, reminding them of the earthquake and its aftermath. Almost two and a half years have passed, but it must not be forgotten.”

Though illness nearly forced him to abandon the trip early on, encouragement from his wife gave him the strength to continue. “I almost gave up, but her words pushed me forward,” he recalled. “In the end, I met wonderful people and received incredible support from strangers. It was a blessing.”

Donations collected during the ride will be used for education and shelter projects for affected children. For Baldemir, combining his love of cycling with a cause close to his heart made the journey unforgettable.

“This was my way of giving something back to the children,” he said. “I am proud, grateful, and very happy.”

Supreme Court: Child Cannot Take Mother’s New Husband’s Surname

ANKARA Turkey’s Supreme Court of Appeals has ruled that a child cannot adopt the surname of the mother’s new husband, overturning a lower court ruling it deemed unlawful.

The 2nd Civil Chamber of the Supreme Court reviewed a case from Antalya, where a divorced mother with custody sought to change her child’s surname. She argued that her child, who continued to bear her ex-husband’s name, faced difficulties because of the difference from her own surname after she remarried. She requested that the child take her new husband’s surname, or alternatively, her maiden name.

While a local court initially approved her request, the Supreme Court overturned the ruling “in the interest of the law” under Article 363 of the Code of Civil Procedure No. 6100. Such decisions do not alter the outcome of the individual case but establish principles for future rulings.

The judgment noted that, under Turkish law, a child born within marriage is given the father’s surname. Following divorce, a mother with custody may apply for the child to use her maiden name if it is in the child’s best interest. However, the court emphasized that the surname acquired through a new marriage cannot be transferred to the child.

“The decision to change the minor’s surname to the surname acquired by the plaintiff mother in her subsequent marriage was found to be contrary to procedure and law,” the ruling stated.

Early Snowfall Blankets Turkey’s High Peaks

ANKARA Turkey’s towering peaks have received an early winter welcome, as September snowfall blanketed high-altitude areas across eastern and northeastern provinces, while lower western regions continue to enjoy late-summer warmth.

Heavy rainfall in the Black Sea region in recent days caused flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage. At higher altitudes, however, the downpours transformed into snow, surprising residents.

In Rize, the Kaçkar Mountains and the 2,640-meter Ovit Pass in İkizdere were coated in white, along with several surrounding highland pastures. In neighboring Gümüşhane, peaks and the Taşköprü Plateau also saw snow as temperatures dropped below freezing overnight. Meteorological data recorded a low of minus 4.7 degrees Celsius at Zigana Ski Resort, though forecasters expect a warming trend in the coming days.

Artvin experienced similar conditions, with rain turning to snow in the highlands. Further east, Ardahan and Kars provinces were hit by early snowfall. In Ardahan’s Sahara Mountain and surrounding plateaus, snow reached up to 10 centimeters, accompanied by thick fog that reduced visibility to just 20–30 meters. In Kars, the highlands of Kağızman and the Sarıkamış Ski Resort welcomed the season’s first snow.

In Trabzon’s Çaykara district, plateaus and the Soğanlı Mountains were also blanketed in snow. Meanwhile, in Bayburt, a sudden snowstorm stranded a shepherd and his flock on a plateau. Provincial teams reached the area after clearing snow-blocked roads, where snow depth reached 30 centimeters, and safely rescued the shepherd.

Residents and tourists in the affected regions were reminded to take precautions, as winter conditions have arrived earlier than usual this year.

Migrating along the Eurasian-Mediterranean flyway, flamingos move between shallow, saline wetlands according to seasonal shifts in water levels and food availability. In Türkiye, the most frequently observed species is the greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus), distinguished by its tall frame and pale pink plumage.

The Kocaçay Delta provides an ideal winter habitat with its mosaic of shallow wetlands, offering both safe feeding grounds and protected resting areas. Flamingos feed by inverting their heads and filtering water through their bills to capture algae, plankton, and small invertebrates, while their long legs and webbed feet allow them to wade efficiently through shallow waters.

Elsewhere in Türkiye, Tuz Lake has long served as a central breeding site for flamingo colonies, while the Gediz Delta functions as a key stopover point during migration thanks to its brackish waters and abundant food sources. Greater flamingos typically build conical mud nests above ground to protect their eggs, with parents usually laying a single large white egg and raising their chicks in communal groups known as “kindergartens.”

Despite their adaptability, experts warn that the species faces growing threats. Irregular rainfall, drought, and rising evaporation can shrink wetlands, reduce food access, and even trigger mass chick mortality when breeding grounds dry out prematurely.

Local cooperation between farmers, water managers, and conservationists is seen as crucial to protecting feeding areas. Controlled eco-tourism initiatives, such as observation towers and guided tours, are also helping to raise awareness while supporting the local economy.

Conservation experts stress that the long-term survival of flamingos depends on safeguarding every wetland along their migration routes. “Without protection across the entire chain of habitats, the resilience of flamingo populations cannot be guaranteed,” they note.

Mayor Karaca Highlights Municipality’s Role in Animal Welfare, Clarifies Wild Boar Responsibility

Fethiye, Muğla Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca has made key statements regarding the district’s animal welfare projects and the wild boar issue affecting some neighbourhoods.

The Mayor confirmed that Fethiye’s new state-of-the-art animal shelter, located in Değirmenbaşı, will be completed by the end of December or early January. Designed as the most modern shelter in the region, the facility was planned and tendered after being allocated to the municipality by the Ministry.

“This project is within our authority and responsibility,” said Karaca. “Our goal is to provide the best conditions for stray animals, with modern standards and proper care facilities.”

Turning to the wild boar problem, Karaca made it clear that the municipality has no legal authority over the issue:

“The pig issue is not under the authority or responsibility of the Fethiye Municipality. Wildlife conservation and national parks need to be involved. Of course, we want to work in harmony with them. If these institutions within our ministry request it, we will gladly mobilise our entire team.”

The Mayor emphasised that wild boars are a shared concern for the community and that coordinated work is already being carried out in certain areas, stretching from Yanıklar to Göcek.

Cleaning Event in Fethiye During European Mobility Week

Fethiye, Muğla A major cleaning campaign will take place in the Fethiye district of Muğla from September 17–20 as part of European Mobility Week, with the aim of raising environmental awareness and promoting sustainable tourism.

The event is being organised in collaboration with Fethiye Municipality, the Seven Seas Travelers Platform (TUMMIAD), and the Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Volunteers and municipal staff will carry out cleaning efforts along the Lycian Way, covering the route from Cennet Bay to Kabak Bay, Butterfly Valley, and Ölüdeniz.

Fethiye Deputy Mayor Oğuz Bolelli stressed the importance of the initiative:

“In an era where we are rapidly depleting the world’s resources, there is a great need for events like this to raise environmental awareness and spread public consciousness about building a sustainable world. We launched our Clean Fethiye campaign last month, and it continues. This joint project with our young entrepreneurs and the chamber of commerce highlights sustainable tourism and we gladly support it. Everyone must do what they can to change the course the world is taking.”

Fethiye Municipality Cleaning Services Director Mahmut Bayraktar said the cleanup would build on the ongoing Clean Fethiye project:

“We will be walking along the Lycian Way, starting from Cennet Bay to Ölüdeniz, promoting sustainable tourism while carrying out cleanup efforts. Our hope is to raise awareness so that these areas remain unpolluted. Let us all leave only our memories and not our waste.”

Koray Hamza Kalaycı, representing TUMMIAD, underlined the entrepreneurial spirit behind the project:

“Entrepreneurship is about finding solutions to problems. With this project, we aimed to maximise sustainability using the resources we have, especially in tourism where people consume the most. Both Fethiye Municipality and the chamber of commerce welcomed our idea, and now we are embarking on this journey together.”

Authorities hope the initiative will inspire residents and visitors alike to help preserve Fethiye’s natural beauty and strengthen its reputation as a centre for sustainable tourism.

New Generation Environmentally Friendly Electric Street Sweepers Begin Operations in Bodrum

Bodrum, Muğla Bodrum Municipality has launched its fleet of 100% electric street sweepers, marking a significant step towards more sustainable urban cleaning practices.

The Sanitation Department introduced five of the new vehicles at a public event in Bodrum Municipality Square, where Mayor Tamer Mandalinci conducted the first trials. The ceremony was attended by Republican People’s Party Bodrum District Chair Tuna Işın, deputy mayors, council members, department heads, and municipal staff.

Designed to be user-friendly, economical, and quiet while offering strong suction power, the sweepers can operate effectively in a wide range of public spaces. Their compact and versatile design allows cleaning in urban and industrial zones, sidewalks, narrow streets, crowded areas, as well as supermarkets, shopping malls, hospitals, warehouses, factories, gardens, and transport hubs—places often inaccessible to conventional sweepers.

Mayor Mandalinci emphasised the importance of the initiative, stating:

“As the Bodrum Municipality, we are here to introduce the five new-generation vacuum sweepers we have recently added to our Cleaning Services Department. These fully electric vehicles, manufactured to European standards, will be our equipment for servicing our streets. Our staff has received the necessary training for the equipment. They have an eight-hour charge and runtime. They are both quieter and will provide much more ergonomic cleaning services in alleyways, streets, and high-traffic areas within the city. I extend my sincere gratitude to our Deputy Mayor Tanju Aksu and our Cleaning Services Director Serkan Kanik for their valuable services. We will carry out even better cleaning operations on all the streets and avenues of Bodrum with our ergonomic devices.”

The municipality highlighted that the new electric sweepers not only reduce noise and emissions but also represent a step forward in aligning with European environmental standards.

Turkish Cities Embrace European Mobility Week ‘For All’

Ankara, Turkey Cities across Turkey are marking the 23rd European Mobility Week (Sept. 16–22) with marches, cycling tours, open-air sports and cultural activities under the theme “Mobility for All.”

Launched in 2002, the campaign promotes reducing carbon emissions, rethinking travel habits, and reclaiming public spaces for people instead of cars.

The week opened in Eskişehir with a colourful city march, where EU Delegation to Turkey Chargé d’Affaires Jurgis Vilcinskas praised sustainable, people-centred transport. He pledged continued EU support for clean mobility projects, recalling EU funds that helped establish Eskişehir’s tram network.

In Mersin, events include inclusive cycling tours, seafront sports, and activities for people with disabilities, culminating in a Sept. 22 Car-Free Day with concerts and street games. In Amasya, the programme began with a symbolic “silent walk” joined by local officials and European representatives.

EU Delegation’s Maria Luisa Wyganowski highlighted the initiative’s inclusivity, stressing that “every citizen, whether a child, elderly, or someone with mobility challenges, has a form of movement beneficial for them.”

Historic Underground Monastery in Nevşehir Set for Revival as Tourism Hub

Nevşehir, Turkey Authorities in central Turkey are restoring a centuries-old underground monastery in the town of Derinkuyu, with plans to open the site as a new cultural attraction.

The Aya Maryeros Underground Monastery, hidden beneath a derelict building and first uncovered in the 1990s, is believed to have served as one of the world’s earliest treatment centres for the mentally ill. Historical sources suggest the complex may have been used for this purpose as early as the 4th century, during the Byzantine era under the supervision of Christian clerics.

Carved into volcanic rock, the monastery includes tunnels, living quarters, cellars, and galleries, resembling the region’s famed underground cities.

“This is considered the oldest known treatment centre of its kind in the world,” said Derinkuyu Mayor Taner İnce. “Although it has survived from ancient times, it has not yet been introduced into our tourism network. Once expropriation is completed, we will be able to proceed more quickly with plans to open it as a museum.”

The ancient city of Tlos in Muğla’s Seydikemer district is revealing its secrets once again. Archaeologists are restoring its stadium and surrounding shops, bringing to life one of Lycia’s most important settlements.

Excavations in the Yakaköy neighbourhood, led by Prof. Dr. Taner Korkut of Akdeniz University, are ongoing year-round. After completing restoration of Tlos’ theatre, attention has now turned to the bustling stadium level and the shops that lined its streets.

Tlos is part of the UNESCO Tentative List for the “Ancient Cities of the Lycian Civilization.” Once the shops are fully cleared, the city’s main street will be revealed, complete with restored columns, giving visitors a glimpse into life nearly 2,000 years ago.

“The stadium was more than a sports arena,” says Prof. Dr. Korkut. “It was a multi-purpose space. On one side there’s a seating stand, while shops opened onto the stadium and the central agora. The city’s earliest street runs along this level. During the Early Roman Period, the Kroneia Festivals—celebrations that brought all of Lycia together—were held here. By the end of the 2nd century AD, a large pool was built in the centre for theatrical performances, including naval battle shows.”

Tlos endured a devastating earthquake in 141 AD, which destroyed many of its structures. “The southern half of the stadium collapsed and became unusable,” Korkut explains. “Yet the site continued to serve as a stage for performances and public events.”

Recent work has uncovered a wide main street, about eight metres across, bordered by a 1.5-metre pavement. Stone slabs still line the street, giving a tangible sense of the city’s ancient life. Archaeologists have also begun restoring the arched shops, each around 30 square metres, with facades and columned galleries reconstructed for visitors to explore.

The restoration project is part of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s Heritage for the Future programme and is expected to be completed by 2026. When finished, Tlos will offer an unparalleled window into the past, showcasing its vibrant streets, bustling shops, and the grandeur of public spaces where Lycian communities once gathered.

Tlos is not just an archaeological site—it’s a story coming back to life, one stone at a time.

Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse Mesmerises Sky-Watchers in Turkey

Ankara, Turkey – In Turkey, millions of people turned their eyes to the sky on Sunday evening to witness the Blood Moon lunar eclipse, one of nature’s most dramatic celestial displays. The rare event, which bathed the Moon in deep shades of red and copper, was also visible across much of Asia, Eastern Europe, and western Australia.

The partial phase of the eclipse began at 7:28 p.m. local time (GMT+3), with the spectacle reaching its peak around 8:30 p.m., when the Moon was fully immersed in Earth’s shadow. The total phase lasted 82 minutes, offering clear and uninterrupted views for observers in Turkey.

Elsewhere, sky-watchers in Western Europe saw only a partial eclipse, while billions worldwide followed the event through live streams shared across multiple platforms.

The next total lunar eclipse is expected to take place on March 2–3, 2026.

Şövalye Island a Major Barrier Against Potential Tsunami in Fethiye

Muğla, Turkey Geophysical Engineer Dr. Engin Erçetin has warned that a powerful earthquake off the coast of Crete or Fethiye could increase the risk of a tsunami along the region’s shores, particularly around Çalış Beach. However, he noted that Şövalye Island serves as a major natural barrier, significantly reducing the potential threat to central Fethiye.

Recalling the 1957 earthquake that led to warnings and limited casualties under then-District Governor Nezih Okuş, Dr. Erçetin reminded residents that Fethiye remains in a first-degree earthquake zone.

“The Crete, Fethiye, and Burdur fault lines are interconnected. Earthquakes in these regions can trigger one another. Fethiye is in a region under constant seismic tension. Just like the North Anatolian Fault, the Hellenic Arc and Aegean faults are also active,” he explained.

Dr. Erçetin noted that the Seydikemer–Esen Arc has the capacity to produce earthquakes of up to magnitude 6.8, while the Hellenic Arc could generate tremors of magnitude 7.2–7.3. He urged both citizens and local authorities to take emergency measures against earthquake risks.

On the tsunami risk, Dr. Erçetin clarified common misconceptions:

“In films, tsunamis are portrayed as waves 8–10 meters high. That won’t happen here. But a serious risk does exist. In the event of a major earthquake off Crete or Fethiye, wave heights could reach 2–2.5 meters along our coasts. These could penetrate nearly 1 kilometre inland, potentially flooding areas up to Mustafa Kemal Boulevard.”

However, he stressed that Şövalye Island provides crucial natural protection:

“The island acts as a natural breakwater, reducing the tsunami impact in central Fethiye to about 1 meter. This is a significant advantage for residents and businesses. Still, constructing additional breakwaters would further enhance safety,” he added.

Authorities continue to highlight the importance of preparedness as Fethiye remains one of Turkey’s most seismically active regions.

Blue Cave, a Natural Beauty in Fethiye, Draws Local and International Tourists

Fethiye, Muğla The Blue Cave, one of Fethiye’s striking natural wonders, has become an increasingly popular attraction for both local and international visitors. Located just two kilometres from Ölüdeniz, the world-famous beach destination, the cave fascinates tourists with its unique natural formation and shimmering blue waters.

The Blue Cave is accessible only by sea, with boat and yacht tours departing daily from Ölüdeniz. These tours are tailored to allow visitors to explore the cave comfortably and often include swimming breaks nearby. Thanks to its close proximity to the coast, the cave is also an inviting spot for those seeking both adventure and relaxation in nature.

Also known as the Cold Water Cave, the Blue Cave owes its striking colour to the abundance of single-celled seaweed. The cave’s natural pool provides refreshing swimming opportunities, while its spacious interior allows entry for small boats. With its single entrance and dramatic lighting, the cave offers an unforgettable experience. Visitors are encouraged to bring waterproof cameras to capture the striking scenery.

The Blue Cave is especially popular in the summer months for its cool, crystal-clear waters. It is also considered a favourable spot for scuba diving, offering a safe and visually captivating environment. The cave’s enclosed structure gives swimmers the sensation of being in a natural pool, enhanced by the interplay of light and water.

Many visitors extend their trips by camping nearby for one or two nights, making the Blue Cave not just a day excursion, but part of a longer escape into Fethiye’s natural beauty.

Turkey’s Fishing Season Opens with Hopes for Abundant Anchovy Catch

Ankara, Turkey Turkey’s 2025 fishing season has opened with optimism, as experts predict a strong anchovy harvest due to low bonito numbers. The season, traditionally launched with the phrase “Vira Bismillah”, began on September 1 in the Black Sea, Marmara and Aegean regions, while the Mediterranean season will start on September 15.

Ramazan Özkaya, chairman of the Central Union of Fisheries Cooperatives (SÜRKOOP), said bonito stocks typically fluctuate in three-to-five-year cycles. After last year’s abundance, bonito are expected to be scarce, while anchovy catches should be plentiful. Reports also suggest strong horse mackerel stocks in the Black Sea, though Özkaya urged fishermen to avoid overfishing smaller schools.

In the Marmara Sea, anchovy fishing has started but remains limited due to high water temperatures, while in the Aegean, sardine and Atlantic mackerel catches are increasing.

Özkaya also warned about the growing impact of climate change on Turkey’s marine ecosystem, citing rising sea temperatures, shifting migration routes and risks to fish reproduction. He called for sustainable fishing practices and reminded consumers that they, too, play a role in protecting future fish stocks.

Motorcycle Accidents in Turkey Rise 17% in First Eight Months of 2025

Ankara, Turkey Across Turkey, 76,162 motorcycle accidents resulting in death or injury were recorded in the first eight months of 2025, marking a 17% increase compared with the same period last year, according to a new report by Anadolu Agency (AA).

The report, titled “The Reality of Motorcycles in Traffic,” draws on data from the Traffic Department of the General Directorate of Security and the Traffic Department of the General Command of the Gendarmerie.

In January–August 2024, a total of 65,291 accidents involving motorcycles resulted in fatalities or injuries. By comparison, this year’s figure rose to 71,604 in police jurisdictions and 4,558 in gendarmerie jurisdictions.

Accidents peaked during the summer months. In 2025, August saw 12,655 cases, followed by 12,067 in July and 11,082 in June. The lowest number of incidents was in February, with 5,556 cases. In 2024, the lowest month was also February, with 2,053 accidents.

The rise comes as motorcycle ownership continues to grow rapidly. As of March 2025, Turkey had 6.39 million registered motorcycles, accounting for 20.1% of all road motor vehicles. Registrations in March alone surged by 58.2% compared with the previous month.

Experts warn that the combination of rising ownership and accident rates highlights the urgent need for stronger traffic safety measures, rider education, and infrastructure improvements to reduce risks for motorcyclists across Turkey.
