Century-Old Weaving Tradition Showcased in Fethiye

Fethiye, MUĞLA – The Rock Carpet Kilim Exhibition, prepared in collaboration with Fethiye Municipality and the S.S. Lycia Fethiye Women’s Entrepreneurship, Production, Business and Development Cooperative, has opened its doors at the Özer Olgun Cultural Center, bringing art lovers together with the geographically protected Fethiye Rock Carpets.

The exhibition, which opened with an official ceremony, features hand-woven carpets produced using natural dyes and traditional techniques. Visitors can view examples of Fethiye Rock Carpets, which received geographical indication registration in 2021, for a period of three days.

Emerging from the cultural interaction between Turkmen communities who migrated to the region and the local population, Fethiye Rock Carpets represent a weaving tradition that became widespread in the early 19th century. These small-sized carpets are distinguished by plant motifs arranged in medallion and corner-center compositions. Produced entirely with hand-spun yarns and natural dyes, the carpets are known for their vivid and contrasting colours, most notably red and navy blue, alongside green, blue, black, white and orange.

Speaking at the opening, Fethiye Deputy Mayor Oğuz Bolelli underlined the cultural significance of the Kaya carpet. He said the exhibition aims to bring renewed attention to this geographically protected value of the region and highlighted the importance of reviving a tradition that is at risk of disappearing.

Bolelli expressed his belief that increased appreciation and demand for the exhibited works would help ensure the sustainability of production and contribute to the revival of carpet weaving in Kaya and its surrounding areas. He wished the exhibition success and strong public interest.

The Fethiye Rock Carpet Kilim Exhibition will remain open to visitors for three days at the Özer Olgun Cultural Center.

Whirling Dervishes Commemorate Rumi’s 752nd Anniversary

Konya, TURKEY – Whirling dervishes performed the centuries-old Sama ceremony on December 17, 2025, as part of the 752nd Anniversary International Commemoration Ceremonies of Sufi philosopher Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, held under the theme “Time of Peace.”

The Sama ceremony is a sacred Sufi ritual of the Mevlevi order, whose members are widely known as whirling dervishes. Through music, chanting and the distinctive whirling movement, the ritual symbolizes a spiritual journey toward divine love, harmony and inner peace.

The ceremony is closely associated with Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, a 13th-century Sufi poet, Islamic scholar and philosopher whose teachings emphasize love, tolerance and unity. Rumi spent much of his life in Konya, where he produced many of his most influential works and where his mausoleum remains a major place of pilgrimage.

Each year in early December, Konya hosts the Vuslat Anniversary International Commemoration events, marking the anniversary of Rumi’s death. In Sufi tradition, “Vuslat” does not signify death itself, but rather a union with the divine, reflecting Rumi’s belief that death is a spiritual reunion rather than an end.

The Sama ceremonies, performed before large audiences from Turkey and abroad, continue to serve as a powerful expression of Rumi’s enduring message of peace, spirituality and universal brotherhood.

Horse-Drawn Sleigh Rides Begin on Frozen Çıldır Lake

Çıldır Lake, KARS–ARDAHAN – Blanketed in snow and sealed with ice, parts of Çıldır Lake have opened to visitors eager to experience one of eastern Turkey’s most distinctive winter traditions: horse-drawn sleigh rides across a frozen lake.

Straddling the border between Kars and Ardahan provinces, Çıldır Lake covers an area of 123 square kilometres and is the second-largest lake in eastern Turkey after Lake Van. Following recent snowfall, sections of the freshwater lake have frozen to a thickness of approximately 15 centimetres, transforming the area into a striking white winter landscape.

With the ice now considered safe, the region’s iconic sleigh rides have officially marked the start of the winter season. Local operator Davut Taşdemir, who runs horse-drawn sleigh tours on the lake, said services began after completing safety checks.

Taşdemir explained that the horses were taken onto the ice to map out routes and test conditions before welcoming visitors. He noted that the lake freezes earlier than many other areas and typically allows sleigh operations for three to four months each winter.

He added that extensive preparations are carried out ahead of the season, including regular care, feeding and training of the horses once snowfall begins. Taşdemir stressed that the ice is always tested by operators themselves before guests are taken onto the lake, particularly as first-time visitors often experience a mix of excitement and apprehension.

The early arrival of winter conditions has attracted visitors from across Turkey, turning the frozen lake into a lively setting for sightseeing, photography and celebration.

Visitor Ecrin Yüksel, who travelled from Istanbul, said the trip had been planned for a long time and described her first sleigh ride on a frozen lake as unforgettable. Another visitor, Gözde Aktaş, said the experience combined both fear and enjoyment, adding that the scenery made the ride especially memorable.

Turkey Registers Thousands of Monumental Trees and Caves for Protection

Ankara, TURKEY – Turkey has officially registered 10,503 monumental trees and 319 caves across the country to ensure their protection and maintenance, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change has told state-run Anadolu Agency.

The registered sites are protected under national conservation programmes, with ongoing work aimed at preserving their cultural, historical and natural significance.

Monumental trees are classified into four main categories: dimensional, historical, folkloric and mystical. From a historical perspective, cultural monumental trees are those that have witnessed significant historical events or figures. Mystical trees are revered by local communities due to religious beliefs, while folkloric trees are associated with customs, traditions or regional events, whether joyful or tragic.

Dimensionally monumental trees are identified by their exceptional physical characteristics, including age, crown spread, trunk diameter and height, which exceed standard measurements for their species.

Once a tree is registered, rehabilitation work begins immediately. Restoration efforts include removing mistletoe, harmful fungi, ivy, dry or diseased branches, as well as foreign objects such as ropes, wires, cables and signs from the trunk and crown. Trees affected by fungal or bacterial infections are disinfected by specialists following pruning.

To prevent damage, thick and dry branches are cut in stages, with exposed surfaces treated using grafting paste to reduce the risk of decay. Artificial surfaces such as concrete, asphalt and paving stones around the root collar are carefully removed to protect the roots and trunk. The area is then refilled with soil enriched with long-term nutrients and fertilisers to support healthy root development.

Alongside tree conservation, projects are continuing nationwide to identify and protect caves as part of Turkey’s natural heritage. These efforts include both already protected caves and lesser-known sites awaiting official registration, bringing the total number of registered caves to 319.

Turkey Sets New Record in Mandarin Exports

Ankara, TURKEY – Turkey has reached a historic milestone in mandarin exports, shipping nearly $615 million worth of produce in the first 11 months of 2025, according to official export figures. The total marks a 61 percent increase compared to the same period last year and has already surpassed the previous full-year record.

Between January and November, Turkey exported 690,014 metric tons of mandarins, representing an 18 percent year-on-year rise. Export revenues climbed even faster, exceeding the former annual record of $575 million set in 2023 by approximately $39 million, despite the year not yet being complete.

Russia remained Turkey’s largest export market, importing 356,341 tons of mandarins valued at $237.08 million. Iraq followed with imports worth $203.31 million, while Ukraine ranked third at $48.35 million.

Hayrettin Uçak, chairman of an Aegean fruit exporters’ association, said producers were enjoying a strong season. He noted that Turkey’s Mediterranean and Aegean regions are key citrus-growing areas and that yields were significantly higher this year, particularly in the provinces of Adana and Mersin.

Uçak explained that although sales started slowly due to warm weather and high early-season supply, exports gained momentum as temperatures fell and demand increased. He added that competitive pricing allowed Turkish exporters to compete strongly in international markets.

He also highlighted improved quality standards, noting that no shipments had been returned due to pesticide residues, a development he described as highly beneficial for exporters.

Uçak said Turkish exporters are actively seeking new markets and promoting mandarins globally, expressing confidence that exports could reach $750 million by the end of the year.

Fethiye, MUĞLA – A total of 3,420 kilograms of hazardous waste was safely removed and disposed of through the Fethiye Municipality Waste Collection Center, ensuring that dangerous materials did not harm the environment.

Municipal officials said the waste, consisting of various types and quantities of hazardous materials, was transferred to licensed disposal facilities using proper waste management practices. By separating these materials from general household waste, the process helped prevent environmental pollution and reduced risks to public health.

The municipality encouraged residents to play an active role in protecting nature by delivering hazardous waste from their homes to the Fethiye Municipality Waste Collection Center. Accepted items include paint and paint cans, inks, adhesives, solvents and resins, insulation materials, detergents, fluorescent lamps and light bulbs, as well as unused or expired medicines.

Sinkholes Multiply Across Konya Plain as Drought and Groundwater Loss Deepen

Konya, TURKEY – Hundreds of sinkholes have appeared across Turkey’s drought-stricken Konya Plain, with new collapses opening in the parched agricultural heartland and raising alarm among farmers and authorities.

A recent assessment by Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) identified 684 sinkholes across the Konya Plain, a key wheat-producing region often described as the country’s breadbasket. Newly released drone footage shows vast craters puncturing fields and splitting the landscape.

Experts attribute the phenomenon primarily to climate change, prolonged drought and intensive groundwater extraction. Heavy irrigation—particularly for sugar beet and corn—has sharply accelerated depletion in the Konya Basin. Geological studies indicate the groundwater table in parts of Konya has dropped tens of metres over recent decades.

Konya Technical University reports that more than 20 large new sinkholes have formed in the past year alone in the Karapınar district. Some measure over 100 feet wide and plunge hundreds of feet deep, posing severe risks to nearby farmland and infrastructure.

The crisis coincides with worsening national water stress. NASA’s Earth Observatory has warned that Turkey is experiencing severe drought, noting that water reservoirs fell to their lowest levels in 15 years in 2021.

Local outlet Turkey Today reports that sinkholes in Karapınar are already threatening livelihoods, with some farmers losing cropland or abandoning high-risk fields amid fears of sudden collapse.

In response, Turkish authorities have stepped up monitoring across the Konya Basin and launched initiatives to curb illegal well drilling, as officials and scientists warn that without significant water management reforms, the sinkholes are likely to keep spreading.

Two-year-old lost his life after being struck by grandfather’s car

Fethiye, MUĞLA – A tragic accident that occurred in Fethiye plunged the district into mourning after a two-year-old child lost his life when he was accidentally struck by his grandfather’s car.

The incident took place in the evening in the Karaçulha neighbourhood. Musa Çağan was leaving his garden in a car when he unintentionally hit his grandson, Muhammet Dursun, who was walking nearby. It was reported that the grandfather did not see the child at the time of the accident.

Severely injured, little Muhammet was rushed to a private hospital by his relatives. Despite all efforts by doctors, the young boy could not be saved and later died at the hospital.

Following the incident, Muhammet Dursun’s body was taken to the Fethiye State Hospital morgue. Police launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The heartbreaking loss deeply saddened the local community, with many expressing condolences to the grieving family.

Harsh winter conditions affect daily life in Turkey’s Kars

Kars, TURKEY – A prolonged period of heavy snowfall and plunging temperatures in Kars province has significantly affected both wildlife and rural life, with brown bears entering hibernation, wetlands freezing over, and livestock farmers coping with harsh winter conditions.

In the forests around Sarıkamış, many brown bears have retreated into their dens following recent snowfall. Research teams from the KuzeyDoğa Association, which has monitored wildlife in Kars and Erzurum since 2006, confirmed that two bears tracked via satellite transmitters have already begun hibernation. Scientific Coordinator Emrah Çoban explained that such snowfall acts as a natural signal for bears to start winter dormancy, which can last between 50 and 130 days, depending on temperature and food availability.

Elsewhere, the extreme cold has frozen Lavaş Lake in Arpaçay district and several smaller ponds and streams, transforming the landscape into striking winter scenery. The severe weather has also impacted daily life, with nighttime temperatures dropping to -10°C, icicles forming on buildings, and farmers facing increasing challenges.

Despite the harsh conditions, local livestock breeders continue their work to protect and care for their animals. In Yağbasan village, cattle breeder Göktürk Öztürk described the routine of feeding animals, letting them outside for fresh air, and ensuring poultry and calves are not confined for prolonged periods, highlighting the resilience and adaptability of rural communities during winter.

The combination of heavy snowfall, frozen wetlands, and hibernating wildlife underscores the dramatic seasonal changes shaping life in Kars province each winter.

Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Conducts Noise Action Plan Survey

Muğla – Muğla Metropolitan Municipality has launched a citizen-participation survey as part of its efforts to prepare the “Muğla Province Strategic Noise Action Plan,” following the completion of the “Muğla Province Strategic Noise Map” studies.

In line with the Environmental Noise Control Regulation published in the Official Gazette in 2022, the Metropolitan Municipality fulfilled its duty to prepare strategic noise maps and action plans in cooperation with relevant institutions. The completed noise map report—approved by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change—examined the impact of major noise sources, including highways, airports, industrial zones and music-playing businesses, on residents across Muğla. It identified existing noise levels and the number of people exposed.

Based on the findings, the municipality has begun preparing the “Muğla Province Strategic Noise Action Plan,” which will outline noise reduction measures aimed at managing environmental noise and minimizing its effects.

To ensure broad community involvement, the Metropolitan Municipality is conducting a survey inviting residents to share the environmental noise issues affecting their districts. Citizens wishing to participate may do so via the following links:

Microplastics Detected at All Monitoring Stations in Datça–Bozburun Protected Area

Datça, MUĞLA – A comprehensive scientific study has detected microplastic pollution at all 17 monitoring stations in the Datça–Bozburun Special Environmental Protection Area, one of Turkey’s most ecologically sensitive marine zones. The highest concentrations were recorded in Bozburun and Yazı, highlighting growing environmental pressure even within legally protected waters.

The joint research by the Mediterranean Conservation Society and Akdeniz University identified a total of 3,105 microplastic particles per cubic meter of surface seawater across the region. Fiber-type plastics, mainly linked to synthetic textiles, accounted for nearly 94% of the samples. Pollution levels peaked during the summer tourism season, while winter data pointed to marine circulation as a key transport mechanism.

Researchers noted that southern coastal areas, where tourism, marinas and agriculture intersect, showed higher contamination than the northern coastline. The findings underscore the need for stronger regulation, regional cooperation and preventive measures, as the study marks the first year of a five-year monitoring program in the Datça–Bozburun area.

Mobile Library Covers 15,000 Kilometers to Reach Rural Readers in Kırklareli

Kırklareli – A mobile library serving rural districts of Kırklareli has traveled more than 15,000 kilometers over the past three years, bringing books and cultural activities to villages without access to permanent library facilities.

Added to the inventory of the Kırklareli Provincial Public Library in 2022 by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the mobile library visits nearly 100 villages and 115 schools each year. The vehicle carries around 5,000 titles from Turkish and world literature, offering children and residents the opportunity to engage with books and reading activities.

The library’s latest stop was Şehit Anıl Yalap Primary School in the Kofçaz district, located on the foothills of the Istranca Mountains. About 130 students from 16 surrounding villages, who attend school under a transport system, explored books inside the mobile library before taking part in games and activities supervised by library staff.

Kırklareli Provincial Public Library Director Mete Karagöl said the project plays a vital role in promoting reading in areas with limited access to libraries. He noted that the mobile library operates three days a week and that its collection is updated twice annually. “Since children show great interest, we prioritize children’s books,” Karagöl said.

Emphasizing the importance of cultivating reading habits, Karagöl added, “Libraries are centers of knowledge and culture. Even in mountainous areas where snow makes access difficult, we overcome every obstacle to instill a love of books.”

Driver Hakan Arda said the warm reception they receive in each village is deeply meaningful. “If we can touch a child’s heart even a little through books, that’s our greatest joy,” he said.

Rising Costs at Home Drive Turkish Holidaymakers Toward Egypt

Cairo – As soaring domestic prices push holidaymakers to seek more affordable, visa-free alternatives, Egypt is rapidly emerging as a strong magnet for Turkish travelers. Lower accommodation costs, expanding flight options and the convenience of obtaining a visa on arrival at Red Sea resorts are fueling the shift.

Tourism flows between the two countries had slowed during the 2010s amid strained diplomatic relations, but warming ties in recent years have reignited interest. With normalization now underway, tour operators report renewed demand for Egypt’s Red Sea resorts as well as cultural destinations such as Cairo and Luxor.

According to industry figures, Turkish arrivals to Egypt increased from around 230,000 last year to an estimated 350,000 this year. Experts point to cost as the primary driver. During peak holiday periods, all-inclusive five-star hotels in Antalya typically start at $400–$500 per night, while comparable resorts in Egypt’s Hurghada average around $160.

Tourism professionals also note that several luxury hotels in Egypt are operated or managed by Turkish investors, helping maintain service standards familiar to Turkish travelers.

Yıldırım Taş, chief advisor to the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TÜRSAB), said Egypt and Dubai have become Turkey’s strongest competitors in both domestic and outbound tourism markets, citing short flight times, numerous direct routes and relatively stable pricing.

Turkish Airlines and its subsidiary Ajet currently operate 61 weekly flights to five Egyptian cities — Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada — with frequencies increasing to 80 flights per week during the summer season.

Visa accessibility is another major factor. Ongoing appointment shortages for Schengen visas have redirected demand toward destinations offering visa-free entry or simplified procedures. Egypt requires only a $15 visa fee on arrival for Turkish citizens.

Beyond beach tourism and year-round warm weather, Egypt’s cultural heritage is also driving winter bookings. Iconic attractions such as the Pyramids of Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum and historic sites in Luxor and Aswan continue to attract visitors.

Tour operator Mehmet Kamçı said hotel occupancy rates across Egypt have reached around 90 percent for the Christmas, New Year and mid-winter holiday period, supported by strong demand from Turkish, Russian and European tourists.

Cem Polatoğlu, spokesperson for a tour operators’ platform, noted that Egypt has made significant upgrades to its resort infrastructure and security environment, narrowing the quality gap with Turkey. Sector representatives expect Turkish travel to Egypt and Dubai to rise by 30–40 percent this year, with further growth possible if identity-card travel arrangements are introduced in the future.

Fethiyespor Prepares Stadium Ahead of Galatasaray Match

Fethiye, MUĞLA – Preparations are in full swing at Fethiyespor as the club gets ready to face Galatasaray in the Ziraat Turkish Cup. Both on-field and facility work have intensified to ensure the match is hosted at the highest standard.

Speaking to SED Media, Fethiyespor Press Spokesperson Selahattin Aydemir emphasized that the ongoing improvements are not due to deficiencies, but are aimed at welcoming a major club like Galatasaray to Fethiye in the best possible way.

Ahead of the crucial match, Fethiyespor Manager Uğur Keskin and Fethiye Municipality Council Member Metin Sevinç paid a visit to Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca, who confirmed that the municipality would mobilize all available resources to ensure the match could take place in Fethiye.

Aydemir noted that the club has been working intensively on preparations for about a week and expressed his satisfaction with the support provided by the municipality. Regarding stadium renovations, he explained that arrangements have begun under the demolished grandstand, with plans to install a portable grandstand accommodating 2,000 spectators. These measures will raise the stadium’s capacity to approximately 7,000 for the Galatasaray match.

“The work we are doing is not to correct a deficiency,” Aydemir said. “These are improvements made entirely to host a large club like Galatasaray in Fethiye in the best possible way. All necessary discussions with the Federation have been completed, and the process is proceeding smoothly.”

Highlighting the significant role of the municipality, Aydemir concluded, “With the support of Fethiye Municipality, we hope to complete this process successfully and proudly represent our city.”

Heavy Rain Causes Flooding in Şişli and Usküdar, Istanbul

Istanbul – Early Sunday morning, heavy downpours in Istanbul led to significant water accumulation on roads in Şişli and Usküdar, resulting in flooding in several homes and businesses.

The intense rainfall followed a “yellow code” meteorological alert issued by the provincial governor’s office for thunderstorms across the city. The downpour created operational challenges in multiple districts, with large pools of water making mobility difficult for both drivers and pedestrians.

In Usküdar’s Çengelköy neighborhood, a clogged storm drain caused flooding on a main roadway. Some drivers struggled to pass through the water, while others were forced to turn back—moments captured on mobile phone cameras.

In Şişli, several homes and workplaces were inundated. Firefighters and teams from the Istanbul Water and Sewage Administration (ISKI) responded promptly to the affected areas.

In the Merkez neighborhood, a vehicle became stranded in a pool of water and malfunctioned. The driver exited safely, and the vehicle was later towed. Footage of the incident circulated on social media.

Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and avoid flooded streets as rainfall continues to affect parts of the city.

St. Nicholas Church in Demre Moves Toward UNESCO World Heritage Nomination

Antalya, TURKEY – The Church of St. Nicholas in Demre, Antalya—the town where the historical figure who inspired Santa Claus once lived and was buried—is moving toward a UNESCO World Heritage nomination as archaeological work at the site accelerates. The church, one of the most significant destinations for Orthodox Christians, attracts over half a million visitors annually.

“We are planning the necessary preparations for St. Nicholas Church to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. We are very excited to carry out this process in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture,” said excavation director Ebru Fatma Fındık.

St. Nicholas was born in Patara, an important Lycian port city, and later served as bishop of Myra, modern-day Demre, in the fourth century. Celebrated for helping the poor and performing miracles, he became the inspiration for the modern Santa Claus. He died in 365 A.D. and was buried in the church that now bears his name, preserved today as the St. Nicholas Memorial Museum.

Fındık, leading a 20-member excavation team, described the church as “one of the world’s most prestigious archaeological areas,” requiring meticulous planning, conservation, and scientific oversight. Much of the original structure lies beneath roughly 6 meters of alluvial deposits carried by the ancient Myra River.

Last year, researchers attracted global attention after uncovering a previously unknown sarcophagus beneath layers of alluvium deposited by medieval floods and tsunamis. While the tomb is believed to possibly belong to St. Nicholas, it has not yet been opened. The discovery will be featured in the upcoming issue of Archaeologie in Deutschland, one of Germany’s leading archaeology journals.

This year’s excavations focused on the church’s northeast section, exploring spaces linked to healing rituals traditionally associated with St. Nicholas’s miracles. Archaeologists uncovered evidence of a collapsed wall caused by historic flooding, along with ceramics and coins used to date the site’s layers.

Turkey Withdraws 20.3 Billion Cubic Meters of Water Amid Growing Pressure on Resources

Ankara, TURKEY – Turkey withdrew 20.3 billion cubic meters of water from various sources last year, according to figures released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) on December 9, highlighting mounting pressure on the country’s water resources amid recurring drought and rising demand.

Freshwater accounted for 45.4% of total withdrawals, while seawater—mainly used for cooling at power plants—made up the remainder. Municipal networks, which serve nearly 99% of urban residents, withdrew 7.5 billion cubic meters, primarily sourced from dams and groundwater.

Per-capita water use varied across major cities. On average, municipalities drew 255 liters per person per day, with Istanbul at 203 liters, Ankara 270 liters, and İzmir 215 liters.

The data comes as Turkey faces intensifying drought conditions, shrinking reservoirs, and long-term water security concerns. Authorities have warned that rapid urbanization, climate-driven dry spells, and aging infrastructure are straining supplies in major cities.

To address these challenges, officials have recently finalized drafts of a new water law aimed at improving management and safeguarding the country’s water resources.

1,600-Year-Old Mosaics in Sinop to Be Showcased in New Visitor Center

Sinop, TURKEY – A new project in Turkey’s Black Sea province of Sinop will create a visitor center to display recently restored 1,600-year-old floor mosaics. The center, located at the Balatlar Building Complex, will feature exhibition halls, elevated viewing platforms, wooden walking paths, and informational panels, designed to enhance cultural tourism while preserving the archaeological site.

Under the direction of art historian Gülgün Köroğlu since 2010, long-term excavations at the Balatlar site have uncovered artifacts spanning multiple civilizations, including Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods. The mosaics, originating from the late Roman/early Byzantine era, are among the site’s most significant findings.

Sinop Governor Mustafa Özarslan highlighted the site’s historical and architectural value, stating the project aims to present the area “in a scientifically guided, well-organized and controlled environment.” He emphasized that the visitor center will prioritize both preservation and effective management, ensuring accessibility for all visitors.

The center’s design will harmonize with the historical surroundings, using natural materials while providing modern facilities to support tourism. This initiative reflects Turkey’s ongoing commitment to protecting its cultural heritage and making it accessible to both domestic and international audiences.

MUSKİ Teams on Duty 24/7 as Heavy Rain Hits Muğla

Muğla, MUĞLA – Following the yellow code rain warning issued by the General Directorate of Meteorology for Muğla, heavy downpours have begun across the region. In response, teams from the Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Water and Sewerage Administration (MUSKİ) worked around the clock to manage the impact.

Field teams carried out out urgent interventions to clear blocked drains, rainwater lines, and streams in areas affected by intense rainfall. MUSKİ officials emphasised that crews remained on 24/7 standby to minimise flooding risks and ensure the safe flow of stormwater throughout the province.

Residents were advised to stay cautious during periods of heavy rain and report any issues through municipal hotlines.

Muğla Welcomes Its First Snowfall of the Season

Muğla’s first snowfall of the season has arrived. While lower elevations across the province experienced heavy rain, higher areas saw the precipitation turn to snow, with Göktepe Mountain in the Kavaklıdere district receiving the first significant snowfall.

The snow, welcomed with excitement by locals and nature enthusiasts, covered the summit in a crisp white layer. The drop in temperatures created postcard-like landscapes, drawing the attention of photographers eager to capture the wintry scenery.

High Peaks Around Fethiye Also Covered in Snow

As cold and rainy weather continues across the country, coastal areas maintain steady rainfall, while snow persists at higher altitudes. The mountains surrounding Fethiye have also turned white, their peaks covered in fresh snowfall that signals the arrival of winter in Muğla’s highlands.

Fethiye Saturday Market Bustles Despite Rain and Cold

Fethiye, MUĞLA – The Fethiye Saturday Market continued to operate at full pace despite rainy and cold weather conditions, attracting a large number of shoppers throughout the day.

Held weekly in the Patlangıç neighbourhood, the market drew strong interest as residents made their way through the stalls from early morning, doing their weekly shopping and comparing prices despite the damp conditions.

Vegetable prices were largely in line with previous weeks. Carrots were sold at 15 TL, lemons 40 TL, eggplants 40 TL, zucchinis 40 TL, cucumbers 30 TL, green beans 80 TL, tomatoes 30 TL, cauliflower 60 TL, cabbage 60 TL, leeks 40 TL, capia peppers 60 TL, bell peppers 40 TL, and green peppers 40 TL. At another stall, zucchinis were priced at 30 TL, while peas reached 150 TL.

Although the market was hit by intermittent showers, both producers and consumers continued shopping without interruption. Shopkeepers said they were pleased with the steady flow of visitors despite the cold, while shoppers commented that prices remained generally reasonable.

Mediterranean Monk Seal Pup Rescued by Fishermen Handed Over for Care

Marmaris, MUĞLA – A Mediterranean monk seal pup that washed ashore after a storm at Serçe Limanı, located between the Söğüt and Taşlıca neighbourhoods of Muğla’s Marmaris district, has been taken under protection by Captain Özden Selçuk and local fishermen.

After securing the pup, the fishermen handed it over to the relevant authorities. Teams from the Aquatic Products Unit of the Muğla Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, along with experts from the Mediterranean Monk Seal Conservation Association, arrived at the scene and assumed responsibility for the young seal’s care.

Officials reported that the pup will be transported to a dedicated care centre in Izmir, where it will undergo rehabilitation and treatment before its potential return to the wild.

Muddy Seas and Grounded Boats in Muğla Captured from the Air

Marmaris, MUĞLA – Muddy seas in Muğla were captured from the air after intense rainfall and storms battered the Marmaris district for two consecutive days. A tour boat that ran aground after striking a pier was among the scenes recorded from above.

Rain, which has been impacting Marmaris intermittently since midnight, continued through the morning. Yesterday’s severe storm caused four tour boats to run aground and toppled several trees onto roads. Rural neighbourhoods were hit particularly hard, with heavy standing water accumulating on roads and agricultural fields.

As intermittent downpours persisted today, rainwater from streams and streets surged toward the coastline. Near the Kemeraltı neighbourhood Public Beach, the influx of muddy water transformed the sea into a striking brown hue. Drone pilot Resul Bulguroğlu captured dramatic aerial footage showing the sharp contrast between the clear sea and the mud-heavy water flowing from the streams.

Among the four tour boats affected — Granitsa, Kastabos, Wiseone, and Demir-1 — the Demir-1 ran aground in the Uzunyalı area after hitting a pier during the storm. Bulguroğlu’s drone footage showed the vessel lying on its side along the shoreline.

Authorities confirmed that no injuries or casualties occurred. Inspections revealed no marine pollution caused by the stranded boats. The vessels will be removed once weather conditions stabilise and it is safe to do so.

With rain and storm conditions expected to continue, officials urged residents throughout the district to remain vigilant and exercise caution.

Seven Killed, 11 Injured in Deadly Bus–Lorry Collision on Southern Motorway

Osmaniye, TURKEY – Seven people were killed and 11 others injured early Saturday when an intercity bus collided with a lorry on a southern Turkey motorway, according to the Osmaniye governor’s office.

The crash took place before dawn on the highway connecting Adana and Gaziantep. According to initial information shared by Anadolu Agency (AA), the accident occurred when a long-distance coach slammed into the rear of an articulated lorry that had stopped on the road after one of its tyres burst.

Footage from the scene showed the front right side of the bus completely destroyed, crushed beneath the back of the lorry roughly 90 kilometres west of Gaziantep.

The Osmaniye governor’s office reported that all of the victims — both the deceased and the injured — were passengers or staff on the bus. Efforts to formally identify those who lost their lives are ongoing.

The lorry driver survived the collision and has been detained for questioning. Police closed the affected section of the motorway as emergency teams worked at the scene and launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.

5,000-Year-Old Human-Carved Caves in Hasankeyf Set to Open for Tourism

Hasankeyf, BATMAN – A total of 10 human-carved caves estimated to be around 5,000 years old are preparing to open to tourists in the Hasankeyf district of Batman, as part of a broader initiative to revitalise the region’s extensive cultural heritage.

Hasankeyf, perched along the Tigris River and boasting 12,000 years of continuous settlement, has hosted many great civilisations, including the Byzantines, Sassanians, Umayyads and Ottomans. Today, it remains a significant attraction for both domestic and international visitors.

Local officials say the new project is designed to enhance accessibility and strengthen Hasankeyf’s position as a major heritage destination. Restoration efforts at the site have included clearing debris, securing pathways and stairways, and improving lighting to ensure safe and engaging visitor access.

Once the work is complete, the cave interiors will be arranged to reflect elements of daily life from ancient periods, offering an immersive glimpse into historical dwelling traditions.

“Our goal is to protect this cultural legacy while making it meaningful for today’s visitors,” district governor Mehmet Ali İmrak said. “All restoration is carried out under official approvals, without harming the original texture.”

İmrak added that the project aims to recreate original living conditions—such as seating arrangements and everyday items—so visitors can “commemorate that day in some way.”

Hasankeyf contains more than 6,000 caves in total, and continued restoration efforts in the coming years are expected to increase visitor interest even further.

The newly prepared caves are scheduled to open to tourism by late December.

Boat Appears to Hover in Mid-Air in Muğla

Fethiye, MUĞLA – Residents and visitors in Fethiye witnessed an extraordinary sight when a boat on the horizon appeared to be floating in mid-air, caused by a rare atmospheric phenomenon known as Fata Morgana. The unusual scene, recorded on a mobile phone, rapidly went viral on social media.

The optical illusion occurred over the sea, creating a moment where the distant boat seemed suspended above the water. Viewers who saw the footage expressed disbelief, with many describing it as one of the most striking natural events they had ever seen.

What is Fata Morgana?

Fata Morgana is a complex type of mirage caused by temperature differences between air layers. This refraction effect distorts the appearance of distant objects, making them seem elevated, stretched, or suspended in the air.

MUSKİ teams are already mobilised, clearing drains, stormwater channels, and sewer lines to prevent blockages and reduce the risk of flooding. Crews are also working to open stream mouths and ensure uninterrupted water flow throughout the province.

The administration emphasised that teams will be on duty 24/7 to address emergencies and minimise potential loss of life and property. MUSKİ urged citizens to remain cautious and follow essential safety instructions during the heavy rainfall period:

  • Stay away from stream beds and water crossings.
  • Avoid travelling unless absolutely necessary.
  • Be aware of the risks of roof blow-offs, falling poles, and trees.
  • Do not park vehicles in areas prone to water accumulation.

For reports and emergencies, residents can contact MUSKİ’s call centre at 185.

Waters Recede, Crash Remnants Revealed

Fethiye, MUĞLA – As water levels have receded at Geyik Dam, remnants from a helicopter crash that occurred 16 years ago have become visible once again. The incident took place on June 18, 2009, when a firefighting helicopter heading to intervene in a forest fire in Aydın’s Çine district crashed into the dam.

The lowered water levels this year have revealed several pieces of the wreckage, including propeller fragments, auger arms, and other metal components that had remained submerged. The newly exposed debris provides a stark reminder of the accident and its impact at the time.

Bodrum’s Çökertme Kebab Ranks 7th on World Food List

Bodrum, MUĞLA – Bodrum’s geographically indicated speciality, Çökertme kebab, has achieved international acclaim by ranking 7th on the “World’s 100 Best Foods” list, announced by a respected global gastronomy source.

Bodrum Chamber of Commerce President Mahmüt Serdar Kocadon celebrated the achievement, noting that the dish’s international recognition strengthens efforts to protect and promote its authenticity. He said, “We can share the story of Çökertme kebab and highlight its ranking as the 7th most delicious dish in the world. This is a source of real pride. We also recently secured geographical indication registration for Çökertme kebab, which is both a proud moment and solid proof of its value.”

Kocadon added that Bodrum aims to ensure the dish is prepared authentically in local restaurants and hotels. Establishments will be able to obtain a certification confirming they serve genuine Çökertme kebab. “The application process is simple and free. District Agriculture, our chamber, and a university representative will evaluate the dish. If it meets the criteria, we will approve it and provide a certificate. We encourage all restaurant and hotel owners to apply,” he said.

Chef Emrah Sarıca highlighted the dish’s importance to Bodrum tourism, calling it “a cultural and local treasure” that is especially popular with visitors. Originating from the Çökertme region of Muğla–Bodrum, the dish is among the top choices of tourists during the summer months.

Çökertme kebab is distinguished by its thinly sliced meat served over crispy potatoes with garlic yogurt and tomato sauce. Sarıca detailed the preparation techniques: “The meat must be cooked quickly and sliced thin. The potatoes should be soaked in icy water to remove starch before being fried in plenty of oil. On the plate, the potatoes come first, then the meat and the tomato sauce.”

Featured in nearly every hotel and restaurant across Bodrum, Çökertme kebab continues to enhance the district’s reputation in culinary tourism, demonstrating that Bodrum’s global appeal extends far beyond its sea, scenery, and nightlife.

Welcome to our midweek round-up of the latest news and updates from Fethiye and across Turkey.

Curated from various news sources.

Demolition Continues at Coastal Businesses in Kocaçalış, Fethiye

Fethiye, MUĞLA – Demolition orders issued for businesses in the Kocaçalış area of Fethiye’s Çiftlik neighborhood are now being carried out, as operators continue dismantling their establishments at their own expense. The Fethiye Municipality has given business owners until December 1 to complete the process, but uncertainty looms over what will happen to the coastline once the clearances are finished.

The actions follow earlier decisions declaring that businesses in the area fall within the officially designated coastal border. Landowner and operator Zeyyad Hekimci said that property holders have repeatedly suffered losses due to shifting shoreline determinations and legal reversals over the years.

Hekimci explained that the family’s land deeds were first issued in 1952, when 2,500 decares of land stretching “from the sea to the forest, from Karagedik to Kargı” were sold by the state to the Çiftlik Cooperative under his grandfather, Ömer Hekimci.

According to Hekimci, a miscalculation later caused 154 decares of their registered land to be incorrectly classified within the coastline. Although the Supreme Court once confirmed this error, allowing them to regain the title deed in 2010, the situation changed again following the political upheaval in 2016. A renewed case in 2017 reversed their previous victory, resulting in the loss of the land once more.

He said operators built facilities only after obtaining approvals through the 2017 zoning amnesty, receiving building permits, utility access, and door numbers from the municipality. After the court decision invalidated the title deeds, however, these structures again became categorised as illegal.

Hekimci noted that substantial payments have also been made to the state for unpaid rent:

  • 2.5 million TL between 2017 and 2022
  • 9.5 million TL between 2022 and 2025

Despite paying these amounts, they were unable to secure operating permits.

“Now the municipality rightfully wants to demolish these illegal buildings,” he said. “To avoid causing further financial strain to the municipality or damage to national property, we are carrying out the demolitions ourselves.”

Addressing rumors circulating in the region, Hekimci stated that their goal is to secure a lease for the land so it is not transferred to another party. He expressed confidence in both public institutions and the municipality:

“We believe the Fethiye Municipality, the Environment and Urbanization authorities, and the state will consider our situation. There are claims that this land will go to someone else, even mentioning former MP Hasan Özyer, but I do not believe the municipality or Mr. Özyer has such intentions.”

As demolition continues along the Kocaçalış coastline, residents and operators remain uncertain about future use of the area, awaiting clarity from state and municipal authorities.

Fines Issued to Those Who Randomly Dumped Garbage in Fethiye

Fethiye, MUĞLA – As part of continued environmental cleanup efforts in Fethiye, several citizens who were found to have dumped garbage randomly were issued administrative fines. Individuals who left waste on the ground or outside designated dumpsters were identified through photo traps placed at strategic locations across the district.

Following these detections, authorities imposed fines on those responsible, reinforcing the municipality’s commitment to curbing illegal dumping and protecting the environment.

Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca highlighted the success of the district-wide cleanup initiative, noting that the campaign—launched simultaneously across Fethiye during the summer—has already yielded significant results.

“Clean Fethiye” Becomes a Model for Turkey

Mayor Karaca said: “Our ‘CLEAN FETHİYE’ campaign is successfully underway. We are expanding our cleaning campaign with the campaign we launched simultaneously throughout the district during the summer months. This comprehensive effort, aimed at preventing littering on the ground and outside of garbage containers, has become an exemplary campaign throughout Turkey. We remain committed to making Fethiye a spotlessly clean city. I thank all our citizens who show concern and invite those who litter outside of garbage containers and on the ground to protect this city together.”

The municipality emphasized that environmental monitoring and photo-trap surveillance will continue across Fethiye to deter illegal dumping and maintain the district’s growing reputation as a clean and environmentally responsible community.

New Directive Prohibits Feeding of Stray Dogs Across Istanbul

Istanbul – The Istanbul Governor’s Office has issued a new directive prohibiting the feeding of stray dogs in public areas across the city, marking a significant step in its broader initiative to regulate stray animal management and safeguard public health.

The circular, titled “Procedures and Actions to Be Taken Regarding Stray Animals,” was published following the Provincial Animal Protection Board meeting held on Nov. 5, 2025. The directive reiterates the responsibilities of municipalities under Law No. 5199 on the Protection of Animals and related regulations, underscoring the crucial role of local authorities in managing the city’s stray animal population.

According to the Governor’s Office, municipalities across Istanbul have been allocated plots to establish natural habitats and shelters for stray animals. The directive calls for the rapid completion of planning, tendering, and construction phases for these facilities. It also urges municipalities to intensify efforts to collect, sterilize, rehabilitate, and relocate stray dogs to these designated areas in full compliance with the law.

A central mandate of the directive is the prohibition of uncontrolled feeding of stray dogs in sensitive locations, including:

  • Health care and educational institutions
  • Airports
  • Places of worship
  • Parks and gardens
  • Roadsides and playgrounds

Authorities say the ban aims to curb rising pest and rodent populations, reduce environmental pollution, prevent ecological imbalance, and mitigate risks to public health and safety.

The directive assigns supervisors the responsibility of ensuring the feeding ban is strictly enforced, warning that any loss of life or property damage linked to stray animals will be interpreted as a municipal failure to meet legal obligations. Such failures could carry administrative repercussions.

The Istanbul Governor’s Office called on both residents and local authorities to fully comply with the new measures, stressing the importance of coordinated action in creating a safer, healthier, and more balanced urban environment.

Gendarmerie Launch Drone-Assisted Operation Against Sand Thieves in Manavgat

Manavgat, ANTALYA – Gendarmerie units in Antalya’s Manavgat district have launched a drone-assisted operation targeting sand thieves who have caused extensive environmental damage along the coastline.

Acting on citizen reports received on Nov. 21, teams carried out a raid in the Mendirek area, where they seized trucks and heavy machinery found actively loading sand. Several drivers attempted to flee despite warnings, but were apprehended after a brief chase. Three suspects were detained, and efforts are continuing to locate two additional individuals connected to the operation.

As part of the investigation, authorities impounded five trucks and three excavators believed to have been used in large-scale sand theft in the Ulualan region. One suspect, identified as Seydi İ., was arrested and subsequently sent to prison.

Drone footage recorded along the Boğaz coastline revealed the scale of the environmental destruction, capturing deep pits and severe disruption to the natural shoreline.

Gendarmerie teams in Manavgat have now implemented 24/7 monitoring, utilizing drones, ground patrols, and newly installed camera traps—especially around the pine grove area, where access will be strictly controlled. Officials say these measures aim to halt further environmental damage and protect the region’s fragile coastal ecosystem.

Life of World’s Tallest Man to Be Made Into Documentary in London

Mardin – Sultan Kösen, the 2.51-meter-tall man from Mardin who has held the Guinness World Record for the world’s tallest living person for 16 years, is set to take part in an international documentary detailing his remarkable life story.

Born in the rural village of Dede in Derik district, Kösen entered the Guinness Book in 2009, earning recognition not only for his extraordinary height but also for having the world’s largest hands (27.5 cm) and size 61 feet. His records have remained unchallenged ever since.

Having visited more than 136 countries, Kösen continues to attract global attention. He will travel to London on Nov. 25 for a week-long visit, during which filming for the documentary—produced by an international company—will take place. The film will trace his journey from his childhood in southeastern Turkey to his rise as a world-renowned figure.

During his London stay, Kösen will also return to the Guinness World Records headquarters for an official height measurement, reaffirming his long-held title. He is also expected to sign Guinness Book copies at several landmark locations across the city.

Kösen said he takes great pride in representing Turkey worldwide:

“For nearly 16 years, I’ve held this record. My hands and feet are also the largest in the world. It is an honor, something that fills me with pride,” he said. “We introduce our beautiful Turkey and our culture to the world. I am proud and happy. The world already knows Sultan Kösen, and soon everyone will know even more.”

His manager and interpreter, Mehmet Veysi Bora, stated that Kösen will again appear in the 2026 edition of the Guinness Book. He added that the documentary aims to offer a rare and intimate look into Kösen’s life, while academic teams plan to conduct health examinations for an upcoming scientific publication.

“Interest in Kösen is unmatched wherever we go,” Bora said. “Even celebrities ask to take photos with him. This shows the unique fascination he inspires.”

Neolithic Structure Resembling Amphitheater Unearthed in Southeastern Turkey

Şanlıurfa, TURKEY – Archaeologists have uncovered a Neolithic architectural structure resembling an amphitheater at the Karahantepe archaeological site in southeastern Turkey, revealing new clues about early communal life and ritual practices.

Located within Tek Tek Mountains National Park, around 46 kilometers from Şanlıurfa’s city center, the site continues to yield significant discoveries as part of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s “Legacy for the Future” project. The initiative aims to uncover early ritual spaces, including figurines and structures used by some of the world’s first settled communities.

Excavation director Necmi Karul told Anadolu that settlement at Karahantepe began around 9400 BCE and lasted until the 8th millennium BCE. Researchers have identified three major settlement phases, evolving from round-plan structures to quadrangular buildings with rounded corners, and eventually to true-cornered constructions. All phases contained both public and domestic buildings.

Karul said the most striking recent discovery is a 17-meter-wide structure containing seated human figurines placed on the floor and embedded in the walls—evidence of a symbolic transition.

“These are very unique finds, showing that prehistoric people increasingly focused on human figurines over time, while earlier periods were dominated by animal symbolism,” Karul explained.

The building contains focal points featuring broad, three-tiered seating, echoing the layout of an odeon or amphitheater, suggesting it functioned as a venue for communal gatherings rather than a restricted ritual space.

Karul noted that the structure’s full layout will become clearer as restoration work continues and standing stones are re-erected in their original positions. Evidence collected so far shows that large groups gathered within the building, with human and animal figurines deliberately arranged at key locations.

“This allows us to draw certain conclusions about the function of these buildings. Had they been temples, their function would have been more limited. The primary purpose appears to have been bringing people together,” he said.

He added that this architectural concept can be seen as a precursor to later amphitheaters and odeons:

“With the advent of settled life, there was a need for spaces that facilitated communal living, which likely led to the construction of such buildings.”

Archaeologists expect further finds to deepen understanding of social and symbolic life in one of the world’s earliest settled regions.

Fethiye’s Famous Motorcycle Cat Gofret Charms Istanbul with Colorful Adventures

Fethiye, MUĞLA – Gofret, the cat known across Fethiye for riding on her owner’s motorcycle, has taken her remarkable journeys to Istanbul—complete with vibrant costumes and her signature helmet. Adopted from Hakkari when she was just two months old, Gofret has been raised by her owner, Hatem Topcu, in a ground-floor garden home in Fethiye, where she quickly adapted to outdoor life and the sound of the motorcycle.

What began as short rides around the neighbourhood soon became a daily routine. Dressed in outfits ranging from police uniforms to bee and wedding costumes, Gofret confidently sits at the front of the motorcycle, secured in a custom-designed baby carrier and never missing a ride without her helmet.

“People often think she’s a toy at first glance,” Topcu said. “When they realize she’s real, they smile in surprise. We started sharing videos, and she quickly became popular.”

Their adventures recently took them to Istanbul, where they visited Garipçe, Üsküdar, Eminönü, Sirkeci and Taksim. Gofret caught the attention of tourists and locals wherever she went, often becoming a playful companion for children. While crossing the Bosporus by ferry, she and Topcu fed seagulls and enjoyed the city’s panoramic views.

Topcu described their travels as “a journey of friendship,” highlighting the deep bond they share. Their first long-distance trip covered 1,200 kilometers, and the duo has since expanded their journeys beyond Turkey, even touring parts of Europe—cementing Gofret’s reputation as an international “motorcycle cat.”

Safety remains a priority. Gofret is always carried safely at the front of the motorcycle and protected with her helmet on every ride.

Their Istanbul trip also led to helping a sick stray kitten, making the journey meaningful beyond sightseeing. “We try to help street cats whenever possible,” Topcu noted.

When not exploring busy cities, the pair enjoys fishing trips, watching sunsets and even swimming together during bungalow getaways—another activity Gofret has grown to love.

“Wherever I go, she comes with me,” Topcu said. “It’s important to introduce cats to these experiences early so they grow without fear.”

With her fur blowing in the wind and her unmistakable charm, Gofret continues to win hearts—on two wheels and across continents.

Istanbul Set for Faster Earthquake Alerts with New Seafloor Sensors

Istanbul – Turkey’s earthquake early warning network is poised for a major upgrade as new seafloor sensors planned for the Marmara Sea are expected to slash alert times to as little as three to six seconds, significantly enhancing Istanbul’s earthquake preparedness.

Officials from the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute detailed the upcoming improvements at a recent briefing. They noted that the current system issued its first alert 8.4 seconds after the magnitude 5 earthquake off Marmara on October 2.

The early warning system functions by detecting P-waves — the first, non-destructive signals that precede the more damaging S-waves — enabling alerts to be sent out within seconds. While modern land-based stations have reduced data transmission delays to 0.2 seconds, the absence of real-time seafloor sensors still creates a natural six-second gap as seismic waves travel from offshore fault lines to coastal monitoring stations.

Professor Nurcan Meral Özel, Director of the Institute, explained that 30 newly installed terrestrial stations have already cut average delays from five to six seconds down to two to four seconds, but eliminating the offshore lag is now the central goal. Istanbul aims to operate a “fast and reliable” warning system supported by modern equipment, renewed stations and extensive field testing.

The system, initially launched with a small pilot group, now serves 1,500 to 3,000 users. Plans include installing at least five fully online seafloor stations along the northern fault line, though deep-water construction costs remain a challenge.

Once upgraded, the system will trigger automatic safety protocols, including stopping metro and train services, closing gas valves, isolating electrical lines and supporting emergency procedures in hospitals and schools.

The Institute has also introduced a mobile early-warning app for public use, expanding access to faster alerts and potentially life-saving seconds ahead of shaking.

Quinces and Lavender Turn Into Scholarships for Students

Fethiye, MUĞLA – The Tradesmen and Craftsmen Hobby Garden, established in the Doğanlar neighbourhood of Seydikemer in memory of the late Mehmet Öztürk — a respected board member of the Fethiye Tradesmen and Craftsmen Credit and Guarantee Cooperative — continues to transform agricultural production into educational support for local students.

This year’s quince harvest, carried out in the 22-acre garden, brought in a higher yield than previous seasons. Cooperative President İsmail Başoğlu and a small team of workers harvested, crated, and transported the quinces to the Antalya market, where demand was stronger than in Fethiye. Alongside the fruit harvest, 16 kilograms of lavender oil produced from the garden’s extensive lavender beds were also sold.

Başoğlu confirmed that the combined income from quinces and lavender — estimated at 150,000 TL — will directly fund scholarships for university students whose families are members of the cooperative. “This year, 110 of our partners’ children applied for scholarships. Thanks to our harvest, we will be able to support all 110 university students,” he said.

The hobby garden, home to 200 quince trees, 300 almond trees, and hundreds of lavender plants, is expected to yield approximately 4 tons of quinces this year, up from last year’s 2.5–3 tons. Quinces are currently selling for around 40 TL per kilogram in Antalya.

Başoğlu noted that the strong harvest may also signal a seasonal shift: “Our elders used to say that a bountiful quince year means a harsh winter. This year’s yield is both abundant and high in quality.”

With each passing season, the garden named in honour of Mehmet Öztürk continues to grow its dual legacy — agricultural productivity and meaningful educational support for local youth.

Ancient Anchorage and Shipwrecks Discovered Off Fethiye Coast

Fethiye, MUĞLA – Underwater archaeological surveys conducted off the coast of Fethiye, Muğla, have revealed an ancient anchorage and three historically significant shipwrecks, offering new insights into maritime activity spanning from the Bronze Age to the Ottoman period.

The discoveries were made by a team led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hakan Öniz, Head of the Department of Cultural Heritage Conservation and Restoration at Akdeniz University’s Faculty of Fine Arts. Working under the “Heritage for the Future Project” with permission from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the team used advanced sonar systems, remotely operated robots, and deep diving techniques to locate and document submerged historical remains.

This year alone, Öniz and his team documented 10 shipwrecks—six off the Antalya coast and four off Fethiye—bringing the national inventory from 411 to 421 known wrecks. The expedition marks the first scientific survey of its kind conducted off Fethiye’s eastern coastline.

Among the most remarkable findings is a previously unknown ancient anchorage that once served as a refuge for ships navigating the Mediterranean. Öniz explained that vessels from Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, and the coasts of Hatay, Adana, and Mersin likely used this natural shelter during storms or while travelling along major trade routes.

The team confirmed that ships anchored at this point from the Bronze Age onward, based on the numerous ancient anchors discovered on the seabed. “These anchors show us how many thousands of years Fethiye’s shores have witnessed maritime activity,” Öniz noted.

Within the anchorage zone, archaeologists also identified three shipwrecks, dating between the 4th century BC and the 6th century AD. Though positioned in what was considered a safe harbour, the ships are believed to have sunk after being caught by sudden easterly storms.

“Each shipwreck is a time capsule,” Öniz said. “From their amphorae and cargo, we learn what was produced in each period, where it was shipped from, and how ancient trade networks operated. These wrecks are like books that help us read history.”

The study contributes to Turkey’s rapidly growing underwater cultural inventory. Öniz highlighted that the team is also conducting major excavations at the Kumluca Ceramic Shipwreck and the Kumluca Middle Bronze Age Shipwreck—considered the world’s oldest known shipwreck. Artifacts recovered from these sites are planned for display at the Mediterranean Underwater Archaeology Museum in Kemer, scheduled to open at the end of 2026.

The discoveries off Fethiye not only expand understanding of ancient maritime routes but also mark the region as a new hotspot for underwater archaeology—offering an exciting glimpse into millennia of seafaring history hidden beneath the waves.

Water Shortages in Kayaköy and Karakeçililer Set to End with New Pipeline Project

Fethiye, MUĞLA – The Muğla Water and Sewerage Administration (MUSKİ) has launched a new water pipeline project to resolve ongoing drinking water shortages in Fethiye’s Kayaköy and Karakeçililer neighborhoods.

The project aims to replace the old and inadequate water lines with a modern, high-capacity pipeline system designed to meet current and future demand. Once completed, the new infrastructure is expected to fully eliminate the water supply problems that residents have faced in recent years.

MUSKİ teams are carrying out excavation and pipe installation works throughout the affected areas. Officials noted that the upgraded system will not only provide consistent water flow but also improve overall service quality and reduce maintenance needs.

Residents in Kayaköy and Karakeçililer are expected to benefit significantly once the project is completed, marking a long-awaited solution to one of the region’s most persistent utility issues.

Karataş Lake Turns to Dry Soil Amid Severe Drought

Burdur – Karataş Lake in Burdur, once a thriving source of livelihood for local residents and an important habitat for hundreds of bird species, has now completely dried up, leaving behind a vast expanse of cracked, barren soil.

The lake, which for generations supported fishing, agriculture, and seasonal tourism, has been severely impacted by long-term drought, declining groundwater levels, and insufficient water inflow. What was once a vibrant ecosystem is now a stark reminder of the growing effects of climate change and regional water mismanagement.

Local residents express deep concern as the disappearance of the lake not only disrupts biodiversity but also affects the agricultural economy that relied on its water. Bird species that once frequented the area in large numbers have also diminished significantly due to the loss of wetland habitat.

Environmental experts warn that similar ecological collapses could increase unless effective water conservation strategies are implemented across the region. Karataş Lake now stands as a symbol of the urgent need for sustainable water management in Burdur and beyond.

Ancient Mask Reliefs Unearthed at Roman-Era Theater in Southern Turkey

Osmaniye – Ongoing excavations in the 2,700-year-old ancient city of Kastabala in Osmaniye have led to the discovery of five new theatrical mask reliefs, bringing the total number of masks unearthed this year to 36. The findings were made in the ancient theater area, believed to have been built in the 1st century AD during the Roman Empire and originally capable of seating around 5,000 spectators.

The excavation team, led by Faris Demir, an archaeologist at Osmaniye Korkut Ata University, has been focusing on uncovering architectural elements of the stage building as well as artistic relics linked to ancient performance culture.

Demir told Anadolu that similar mask discoveries have been made in previous excavation seasons.

“We unearthed masks in Kastabala in previous years as well. These depicted tragedy and comedy plays,” he said. “We have also brought to light numerous architectural elements belonging to the stage building. These finds will make it possible to restore the structure.”

Among the newly discovered pieces, Demir highlighted the importance of a mask relief representing an elderly thinker or philosopher, noting that it deepens understanding of the theater’s cultural role.

“The most important of the new discoveries is a carving of an elderly thinker,” he said. “This indicates that the theater served not only as a performance venue but also as a cultural center where philosophical and literary discussions were held.”

Demir added that the masks show influences from both Eastern and Western cultural traditions, reflecting Kastabala’s historical significance as a crossroads of civilizations.

With the project progressing steadily, Demir said the long-term goal is to fully restore the stage building:

“With this year’s finds, the number of masks discovered has risen to 36. By the end of this project, we will be able to restore the stage building and hand it down to future generations.”

New Earthquake Early Warning System Marks Major Safety Breakthrough in Turkey

Istanbul – Turkey has taken a significant step forward in earthquake preparedness with the improved Earthquake Early Warning System developed by Boğaziçi University’s Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (KRDAE). The system demonstrated its effectiveness on Oct. 2, when it successfully issued its first real-time alert just 8.4 seconds after a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the Marmara region.

KRDAE’s work centers on the high-risk Marmara region, one of Turkey’s most seismically active areas. The project has now entered a new phase, focused on creating an advanced detection infrastructure capable of identifying the first, fastest-moving seismic waves and issuing alerts within seconds. These critical moments can allow authorities and citizens to take rapid precautionary measures, reducing injury, damage, and disruption.

A major leap in the system’s performance came from upgrading the data transmission infrastructure of seismic stations across the Marmara region. These improvements reduced transmission delay to the Kandilli Observatory to just 0.2 seconds.

When seismic activity is detected, real-time signals are immediately processed by specialized software that rapidly determines the earthquake’s location and estimates its magnitude. This enables the system to generate an alert almost instantaneously.

The recent Marmara Sea earthquake served as a crucial real-world performance test. After seismic waves reached land-based stations in about five seconds, KRDAE’s software analyzed the data and issued the first alert within a total of 8.4 seconds. Officials say this validates the system’s ability to function effectively under real earthquake conditions and provides valuable data for ongoing improvements.

KRDAE, in collaboration with a software development firm, has also created an iOS-based mobile application that delivers early warning signals directly to users. The system is currently being tested on approximately 2,500 devices, with real earthquake events used to measure notification speed and reliability.

Looking ahead, KRDAE plans to expand the early warning system across Turkey. Upcoming steps include:

  • Installing new low-latency seismic stations throughout the country
  • Releasing an Android version of the mobile app
  • Enhancing software infrastructure to support large-scale, simultaneous alert distribution

Officials say these developments will strengthen Turkey’s ability to respond swiftly to future earthquakes, making early warning technology a vital component of national safety efforts.

Expert Warns Sındırgı Facing “Unprecedented Earthquake Storm”

Balıkesir, TURKEY – Sındırgı, in the Balıkesir province, has been experiencing what experts describe as an “extraordinary earthquake storm” for the past three months. According to Gazi University Faculty of Engineering faculty member and disaster management expert Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bülent Özmen, the scale and intensity of the seismic activity is unlike anything previously recorded in Turkish history.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Özmen said that nearly 18,000 tremors have occurred in the region since the 6.1-magnitude earthquake on August 10. Of these, two were magnitude 6.1 and around 80 reached magnitude 4. “We are facing an earthquake activity level we can call an ‘earthquake storm’—an unprecedented number of earthquakes in Turkish history,” he said.

Özmen noted that the activity appears to be driven by both tectonic stress and magmatic intrusion, making the situation unusual. He stressed that while predicting the future course of the earthquakes is not possible, detailed geological and geophysical studies are urgently needed.

He recommended establishing temporary earthquake observation stations in Sındırgı and surrounding districts to more accurately track micro-earthquake behaviour and seismic parameters. Monitoring groundwater levels, radon gas changes, electrical resistivity, magnetic field fluctuations, and crustal deformation could provide valuable early signals, he added.

“All observations should be integrated into a central dataset, and a comprehensive report should be prepared by the AFAD Earthquake Science Board,” Özmen said. “The public must be kept informed regularly to prevent misinformation.”

Calling the situation “extraordinary”, Özmen argued that extraordinary measures may be needed. With AFAD having recently designated the area a Disaster Zone Affecting General Life, he noted that further steps—such as declaring a disaster-prone zone or even a state of emergency—may be necessary. He emphasised the importance of expanding temporary shelters, supporting voluntary relocation, and ensuring uninterrupted education and healthcare services.

Özmen also pointed to previous scientific reports showing that the Simav Fault Zone and Gelenbe Fault are capable of producing earthquakes up to magnitude 7. While predicting timing is impossible, he noted that 31 magnitude-6 earthquakes would be required to release the energy of a single magnitude-7 event, and only two such quakes have occurred in Sındırgı so far.

“This is a highly unusual and stressful period for the people of Sındırgı,” Özmen said. “Extraordinary measures must be taken.”

Temple of Zeus Discovered in Limyra After 43-Year Search

Antalya, TURKEY – A portion of the Temple of Zeus, long known from epigraphic sources but never located despite 43 years of research, has been discovered in the ancient city of Limyra in Antalya’s Finike district. The find was made during ongoing excavations in the western section of the city.

Limyra, situated at the foot of Mount Toçak about 9 kilometres northeast of Finike, was one of the easternmost cities of the Lycian civilization. It served as the capital during the reign of King Perikle and later became an episcopal centre in the Byzantine period. The city is notable for its extensive rock-cut tombs, city walls, the Heroon of Perikle, a 6,000-seat theatre, Roman bathhouse, the Ptolemaion monument, a main street, and a monumental tomb dedicated to Gaius Caesar.

Current excavations are being carried out under the coordination of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kudret Sezgin, in partnership with the Austrian Archaeological Institute. Sezgin, a faculty member at Hittite University’s Department of Archaeology, said archaeological evidence places Limyra’s earliest urbanisation around 2,400 years ago.

Sezgin explained that Lycian King Perikle undertook major urban development in the city, and that Limyra was incorporated into the Heritage for the Future Project in 2023. He said this year’s excavations produced a major breakthrough:

“We discovered a temple known from epigraphic sources since 1982, but whose location had remained unknown. Archaeological findings confirm that this structure is a Temple of Zeus built during the classical period. Written sources also tell us that Zeus was the chief deity of the city during the Hellenistic and Roman periods.”

Archaeologists uncovered the main entrance section of the temple, including the eastern façade and the ante walls (porch structures). The façade measures 15 metres in width. Sezgin noted that a wall from the Byzantine period had been constructed on top of the temple remains, while the sacred chamber lies beneath a privately owned orange grove just outside the existing walls. Excavations will continue there following expropriation procedures.

Ceramics found at the site indicate that settlement in the area may date back 5,000 years, prompting researchers to re-evaluate long-held theories about Limyra’s urban development. Sezgin stated:

“It has now been concluded that the monumental gate known as the propylon, located under Roman Street, served as the entrance to the temple’s sacred precinct in the classical period. We also determined that the structure previously identified as a Hellenistic city wall was in fact the temple’s protective boundary wall.”

The discovery marks a significant addition to the archaeological understanding of Limyra and provides new insights into Lycian religious architecture and city planning.

Gallipoli Historic Underwater Park Draws 15,000 Divers in Two Years

Çanakkale, TURKEY – The Gallipoli Historic Underwater Park, established in 2021 by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s Gallipoli Historic Site Directorate, has rapidly become one of Türkiye’s most captivating tourism attractions, luring 15,000 divers in just two years to explore its rare underwater wartime heritage.

Located off the storied shores of the Gallipoli Peninsula, the park offers an extraordinary dive into history—literally. Beneath its waters lie 23 sunken warships and wreck sites dating back more than 110 years, each bearing silent testimony to pivotal moments of World War I. Among the most visited wrecks are HMS Majestic, the remains of Ertuğrul Bay, Massena and Saghalien, the Helles Barges, wrecks off Tekke Bay (W Beach), and HMS Triumph.

İsmail Kaşdemir, head of the Gallipoli Historic Site Directorate, said the underwater park has quickly become one of the world’s leading centers for scuba diving.

“Our 23 wrecks and 12 diving points have transformed the park into a global magnet for diving enthusiasts,” he said.

Kaşdemir highlighted the cultural significance of the underwater site:

“From the beginning, we understood the immense treasure beneath these waters. After careful work, we created the world’s only World War I–themed underwater park. Top divers, global media, and television channels come here because each wreck beneath Gallipoli’s waters tells its own story.”

Diver interest is rising sharply, with 5,000 visitors in 2024 and expectations of 10,000 divers in 2025. Kaşdemir described the atmosphere as “a journey through a time tunnel,” allowing visitors to grasp the impact of the Gallipoli Campaign from a striking underwater perspective.

As Çanakkale’s reputation grows as an international cultural hub, efforts are underway to elevate the park’s profile even further. The directorate plans to present the site at a major global diving fair in Düsseldorf, Germany, this January.

Supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Turkish Tourism Promotion and Development Agency, these initiatives aim to boost international visibility.

“With Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy’s strong support, we are confident the Gallipoli Historic Underwater Park will become one of the top three diving destinations worldwide,” Kaşdemir said. “At the same time, we are working to expand diving opportunities to additional coastal and inland locations across Turkey.”

The park continues to grow as a world-class attraction, inviting divers to descend into history and witness a chapter of the past frozen beneath the waves.

Under Dinçel, Fethiyespor recorded 3 wins, 4 draws and 5 losses in 12 league matches this season, and managed to collect only one point in six away fixtures. At a farewell press conference held at the club’s facilities, Dinçel apologised to supporters for the team’s performance and acknowledged the high expectations surrounding the club.

Dinçel, who previously led Fethiyespor to a championship and later helped stabilise the team during a difficult second term, reflected on his tenure, noting both the achievements and challenges. He explained that budget limitations, rising transfer fees and changes to federation rules had contributed to squad-building difficulties at the start of the season.

He stressed that his departure was mutual, saying, “I neither resigned nor was I forced to leave; we sat down and reached an agreement.”

Dinçel was bid farewell with flowers by Fethiyespor Supporters Association President Özkan Hırçın, association members, fans and club officials. He expressed gratitude to Club President Esat Bakırcı, the administrators, the supporters, Mayor Alim Karaca and local media for their support throughout his tenure.

Speaking on wider club matters, Dinçel also highlighted the development of the youth academy but noted that improved training facilities remain essential for long-term success.

Regarding allegations linking players to a recent betting scandal, Dinçel said he had no involvement and urged the public to wait for official findings.

Dinçel concluded by expressing confidence in the team’s future, saying he believes Fethiyespor has the strength to continue competing for success even after his departure.
