Muğla Records the Highest Number of Forest Fires in Turkey Over the Past Decade

According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Muğla has become the province with the highest number of forest fires in Turkey over the last ten years. From 2014 to 2024, the province experienced 2,716 forest fires, placing it ahead of Antalya with 2,446 fires and İzmir with 1,649.

The trend has continued into 2025. As of June 27, Turkey has recorded 1,089 forest fires since the beginning of the year, which have destroyed 1,823 hectares of forest land nationwide. These figures were reported before the peak of the summer fire season, raising concern among authorities and environmental experts.

Muğla, Antalya, and İzmir Identified as Highest-Risk Areas

Mapping studies show that Muğla, Antalya, and İzmir remain the most at-risk regions for wildfires. Their location along the Mediterranean and Aegean coastlines, combined with dense forest cover, high temperatures, and increased human activity during the summer, makes them especially vulnerable.

Experts note that both climate change and human factors significantly contribute to the rise in fire incidents. Prolonged drought, rising temperatures, and erratic weather patterns have intensified the fire risk. At the same time, human negligence, such as improperly extinguished picnic fires, discarded cigarette butts, and uncontrolled agricultural burns, remains a key cause of wildfires.

Authorities continue to urge the public to exercise caution, particularly as the peak fire season approaches.

Fethiye Municipality Expands Social Support Efforts Amid Growing Need

Fethiye Municipality has intensified its social aid activities in response to increasing economic challenges and a recent rise in house fires across the district. Speaking on the issue, Ali Rıza Kıroğlu, Director of Social Aid Affairs, stated, “We are with those in need,” underlining the municipality’s commitment to supporting vulnerable residents.

The municipality continues to operate actively across all 41 neighbourhoods in Fethiye, offering a wide range of assistance, including donations of household goods, clothing, hot meals, and food packages. The aid is carried out under the leadership of Mayor Alim Karaca, with additional support from charitable organisations and individuals.

Support for Victims of House Fires

Kıroğlu reported a notable increase in house fires, with 8 to 10 incidents recently recorded in the region. In response, the municipality has been providing both new and second-hand goods to affected families.

“We provide essential household items to citizens impacted by fires. The contributions of organisations such as the Ahbap Association and individuals like Mr. Haluk have been especially valuable in this process,” he noted.

A Call for Second-Hand Donations

Emphasising the role of community participation, Kıroğlu invited citizens to donate unused household appliances:

“We ask our citizens to share items such as refrigerators and washing machines that are in good condition. Our teams will collect and deliver them directly to families in need. This is a trust, and we deliver that trust faithfully.”

Comprehensive Social Aid Services

Fethiye Municipality’s social aid operations are supported by a structured system, including:

  • Hot meal distribution through its soup kitchen
  • Clothing support from a dedicated store
  • Food banking services
  • A “Municipality Card” system to ensure fair and sustainable aid distribution

“We’ve built a system that doesn’t only respond to emergencies, but one that supports people continuously,” Kıroğlu explained.

Economic Hardship Driving Demand

Kıroğlu also addressed the impact of rising living costs:

“We see the effects of inflation every day in the markets. Purchasing power is declining, and more families are struggling to meet basic needs. We cannot remain indifferent to this reality,” he said.

In closing, Kıroğlu stressed the importance of sustainable support:

“Everything we do must be effective and long-term. As people’s needs evolve, so must our approach.”

Injured Stork Undergoes Treatment After Rescue in Seydikemer

In the Güneşli Neighborhood of Seydikemer district, Muğla, three siblings helped rescue an injured stork found by the roadside.

Ela Akkurt and her siblings noticed the bird standing still near the road and moved it to a safe area to prevent the risk of it being hit by a vehicle. They informed local residents, who then contacted the authorities.

Following the notification, a team from Seydikemer Municipality Veterinary Services Directorate arrived and examined the stork. It was then taken into treatment.

According to local residents, a group of storks has been nesting on the Güneşli Neighborhood Mosque for around 30 years. The injured stork is believed to be one of five frequently seen in the area.

Municipal veterinarian Berke Demiröz stated that the bird is undergoing treatment and will be released back into its natural habitat once fully recovered

Volunteers Rescue Wildlife from Ashes After Devastating Fires in İzmir’s Buca District

Around 100 volunteers gathered in the fire-scorched forests of İzmir’s Buca district on July 5 to search for animals that managed to survive recent wildfires, rescuing and treating creatures found among the ashes.

The search-and-rescue effort was organised through a social media call by the Projects for Animals Association (HIPDER) and the Afalina Animal Rights Community. Despite most participants being strangers to one another, they united with a shared mission: to save lives.

Working in small groups across fire-damaged zones where containment and cooling had been completed, volunteers combed the charred landscape for signs of life. Their efforts led to the rescue of one striped viper, two sheltopusiks (a species of legless lizard), and two tortoises. A veterinarian on site treated injured animals, while healthy survivors were placed in temporary cages for protection and eventual relocation to safer habitats.

HIPDER founder Funda Bonomo said the overwhelming response was heartening.

“We wanted to rescue animals that couldn’t escape the fire but somehow survived, and either relocate them or provide medical care,” she explained. “Seeing one live animal and being able to save it makes everything worth it. If we hadn’t come today, it may have died from hunger or thirst tomorrow.”

Bonomo also expressed her sorrow at the suffering caused by human carelessness. “The fact that these animals die in their own habitat because of human irresponsibility is a heartbreaking injustice.”

Volunteer Izgen Cebbar described the emotional impact of seeing the destroyed landscape and the determination shared among those helping.

“Everyone gave their all to save even a single animal,” she said. “We ran after a lizard with everything we had, desperate to pull it out of the darkness. This has been a really difficult time for our country.”

Another volunteer, Tolga Çevik, expressed frustration over the amount of rubbish found in the forest, including bottles and even a discarded toilet.

“The forest is already ashes. But what I don’t understand is why there’s so much trash here? We’re treating nature terribly,” he said. “Some disasters may be natural, but we’re fuelling them. We’re creating the conditions for destruction.”

The search took place as Türkiye faces one of its most intense wildfire seasons in recent years. Agriculture and Forestry Minister İbrahim Yumaklı reported that 3,044 fires have occurred so far in 2025, including 1,305 in forested areas. In just the past week, 624 wildfires broke out, nearly one-fifth of the annual total.

While 621 of these have been brought under control, efforts continue in several provinces including İzmir, Sakarya, and Hatay, supported by the country’s largest-ever air and ground firefighting operation, involving 25,000 personnel.

Despite the devastation, the efforts of volunteers in Buca offered a glimmer of hope amid the ashes—proving that even in the face of loss, compassion and action can help restore life.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya Visits Fire-Affected Neighborhoods in İzmir’s Ödemiş District

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya visited the rural neighborhoods affected by recent forest fires in the Ödemiş district of İzmir province on Sunday, where he met with residents, listened to their concerns, and provided updates on ongoing recovery efforts.

Addressing the press in Karadoğan neighborhood, Yerlikaya emphasised that firefighting operations have been ongoing with full mobilisation since June 25, with all state institutions working in unison to bring the fires under control.

“We visited Suçıktı, Tosunlar, Üzümlü and Karadoğan. Immediately after the fires, AFAD coordinated damage assessments which are now nearly complete. The remaining evaluations will be finalised by tomorrow,” Yerlikaya stated.

He noted that AFAD allocated TL 30 million ($750,000) each to the governorships of İzmir and Bilecik to assist recovery efforts. In Karadoğan, 16 fully equipped temporary container homes have been installed, and additional units are being delivered to other affected areas. These containers include air conditioning, electric stoves, refrigerators, and essential household items.

Across affected districts including Ödemiş, Çeşme, Seferihisar, Buca, Bornova, and Gaziemir, a total of 228 residences, 13 workplaces, and 15 barns have been identified as severely damaged. Yerlikaya said new homes and workplaces will be handed over within five to six months under the coordination of AFAD and TOKİ.

Financial support is also being delivered swiftly. So far, TL 16.9 million (approx. $422,645) has been paid to citizens whose damage assessments are complete. Losses related to livestock, beehives, and agricultural land registered under the Farmer Registration System will be addressed in coordination with local authorities.

The Ministry of Family and Social Services is also providing compensation for household items lost in the fires.

Acknowledging concerns about damaged roads, Yerlikaya promised these would also be addressed promptly.

Recalling the tragic loss of two forest workers and one resident in the Suçıktı neighborhood, Yerlikaya extended his condolences and reiterated the government’s commitment to rebuilding. “Just as we’ve delivered 250,000 homes following the earthquake disaster, we will rebuild and hand over every damaged home, barn, and business here within six months,” he said.

He concluded by urging the public to stay vigilant against forest fire risks, especially during hot weather, and confirmed that reforestation of burned areas would begin soon.

“God willing, we will replant every tree lost, and we pray we are never tested like this again,” he said.

Stream Improvement Works Cause Disruption for Tradesmen in Fethiye

Ongoing stream improvement works in the Taşyaka Neighborhood of Fethiye, Muğla, have begun to take a toll on local businesses. Now in their third week, the works—carried out by the State Hydraulic Works (DSİ) on Baha Şıkman Street, a key route connecting to Ölüdeniz—have sparked frustration among tradesmen.

Local shopkeeper Gökhan Tümen voiced his concerns, stating that dust and disruption from the construction have severely impacted his business.

“We are victimised. A lot of my products are covered in dust and dirt,” Tümen said. “It’s been 21 days since work began, but there’s still no progress. One day the concrete is missing, the next day the workers aren’t here. They drink tea ten times a day and sit around. No one is thinking about the tradesmen.”

Tümen added that the prolonged work and lack of communication have led to significant daily losses. “We are in a very difficult situation here. There’s dust and dirt everywhere. We want a solution and for someone to take responsibility. We keep being told ‘we’ll open the bridge today, tomorrow…’ but nothing happens. They keep stalling us. The authorities need to step in and support us.”

With no clear timeline for completion, tradesmen in the area are calling for immediate intervention to minimise further financial damage and restore access to customers.

Caravan Problem Resurfaces on Fethiye’s Koca Çalış Beach

The recurring issue of caravans occupying Fethiye’s Koca Çalış beach has once again sparked public concern as the summer season gets underway. Dozens of caravans parked side by side along the coastline have drawn criticism from beachgoers, who say the situation is obstructing views and limiting public access to the beach.

Caravan Problem Resurfaces on Fethiye’s Koca Çalış Beach

One citizen who came to swim expressed his frustration, stating: “We come here to swim but there is no space left because of the caravans. This beach belongs to all of us, we expect a solution from the authorities.”

Locals have long called for regulations to prevent caravans from parking for extended periods along the beachfront, particularly during peak tourist season. Residents and visitors alike are now urging officials to step in and address the growing problem to ensure public spaces remain accessible to all.

Heavy snowfall blankets northeastern Turkey as wildfires rage

A rare heavy snowfall covered parts of northeastern Türkiye on Friday, while other regions grappled with a surge in wildfires.

Experts say human-driven climate change is causing more frequent and intense extreme weather events, from droughts to heatwaves and hailstorms.

Temperatures plunged in mountainous areas inland from Rize, a town on the northeastern Black Sea coast about 120 kilometres (75 miles) from the border with Georgia.

Gencağa Karafazlıoğlu, a journalist in Rize, said he had never before seen snow in July.

“In Rize, we’re used to weather anomalies. We’ve had snow several times in March but never this much. The older generation say they saw snow in July 30 or 40 years ago but never this much.”

In Ovit Yaylası, a plateau some 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) above sea level, fields were blanketed in white after snowfall, social media footage showed.

The snowfall covered an area stretching at least 100 kilometres, from Anzer Yaylası through the Kaçkar Mountains National Park and beyond.

“The town of Artvin was the worst hit,” Karafazlıoğlu said. Artvin is about 50km inland.

Elsewhere, firefighters battled at least 10 “major” forest fires on Friday, Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumaklı told a press conference.

Cabotage Day Celebrated with Enthusiasm in Fethiye

The 99th anniversary of July 1st Maritime and Cabotage Day was celebrated with pride and enthusiasm in Fethiye, starting with a ceremony held in Beşkaza Square.

The event was attended by Fethiye Deputy Governor Mesut Yakuta, Deputy Mayor Oğuz Bolelli, Fethiye Port President Çetin Çiftçi, İMEAK Chamber of Shipping Fethiye Branch President İlkay Tugay, Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Osman Çıralı, AK Party Fethiye District President Kadir Sarıhan, along with presidents and representatives of various maritime cooperatives. The programme began with a wreath-laying at the Atatürk Monument.

Following the official ceremony, Fethiye Port President Çetin Çiftçi delivered a speech highlighting the historical significance of the day. He noted that the Cabotage Law, enacted on 1 July 1926, marked a critical milestone in Turkish maritime history:

“1 July 1926 is the victory of the War of Independence at sea. With the Cabotage Law, foreign powers lost their privileges in our waters, and the right to carry cargo and passengers along our coasts was rightfully returned to Turkish-flagged ships and citizens of the Republic of Turkey. It is a day of rebirth for our maritime sector, a day of joy, pride, and celebration.”

After the speeches, protocol members boarded boats from Fethiye Port and set out to sea, where they laid a wreath in memory of martyred sailors.

Fethiye Deputy District Governor Mesut Yakuta, speaking after the ceremony, said:

“We came together for the celebrations and honoured our martyrs by placing a wreath in the sea. Happy July 1st Maritime and Cabotage Day to all.”

İMEAK Chamber of Shipping Fethiye Branch President İlkay Tugay also shared his thoughts, stating:

“Our events began with the morning ceremony and continued with the sea tribute. For us sailors, July 1st is a symbol of existence. If we are able to trade freely within Turkey’s borders today, we owe it to this law.”

Cabotage Day events continued throughout the day with a range of activities, including shows and competitions, celebrating Turkey’s maritime sovereignty and heritage.

Turkey Battles Multiple Wildfires as Heatwave Fuels Rapid Spread

TURKEY – Turkey faced a series of wildfires on June 27, as extreme heat and strong winds triggered dangerous blazes across five provinces — Bursa, Antalya, Sakarya, Kahramanmaraş, and İzmir. With temperatures soaring above 41°C, the country remains on high alert during what is already a high-risk wildfire season.

One of the most critical fires broke out in the Osmangazi district of Bursa, where flames, fanned by gusty winds, quickly spread from forested areas into nearby residential zones. Several homes and gardens were affected, with five houses evacuated as villagers fled in panic. Rescue teams were dispatched to assist farmers trapped with their tractors in the advancing fire.

Local officials reported that pinecones acted as fire carriers, spreading embers far beyond the main fire line. Hours later, firefighting teams announced that the blaze had been “largely brought under control.”

Meanwhile, in Antalya’s Alanya district, a separate wildfire prompted a large-scale response, with helicopters, fire trucks, and ground crews battling the flames. Strong winds hampered suppression efforts, though the affected area is sparsely populated. Teams continue to monitor the site for flare-ups.

In Sakarya province, another forest fire erupted. While the cause remains unknown, suppression efforts are ongoing. Officials have not yet confirmed the scale of the damage.

İzmir’s Aliağa district experienced its third wildfire in as many days, with the most recent outbreak reported at 10:15 a.m. Crews responded swiftly and brought the fire under control within hours. However, due to dry and windy conditions, the risk of reignition remains high.

Wildfires are a recurring threat in Turkey during the summer months, especially in the Aegean and Mediterranean regions, where rising temperatures, low humidity, and dense forests combine to create ideal conditions for fast-spreading fires.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any signs of fire immediately.

22nd Göcek Gürsu, Pırnaz Yayla Walk Began with Enthusiasm

FETHIYE, TURKEY – The 22nd Göcek Gürsu, Pırnaz Yayla Migration events, held in the Göcek neighbourhood of Fethiye, took place with great enthusiasm and colourful scenes. The traditional walk attracted strong participation and concluded with a lively concert in Göcek Square.

The festivities began with the traditional march from the Göcek Cultural Centre to Göcek Square. Organised under the leadership of Fethiye Municipality, the event was attended by Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca, representatives from the Anatolian Yörük Turkmen Federation and the Fethiye Yörük Turkmen Cultural Association, former members of parliament, academics, and many local residents. Participants dressed in traditional Yörük costumes brought energy and colour to the event, accompanied by the sounds of drums and zurna.

Following the march, a concert was held in Göcek Square, where various local artists performed. Citizens enjoyed the music and atmosphere, creating a vibrant scene and helping to preserve and celebrate local cultural traditions.

Speaking at the event, Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca said, “We have started the 22nd Yörük Walk in Göcek. Our walk will continue across different locations for five days. It is very important for us to keep these cultural values alive and pass them on to future generations. Although we were unable to provide the level of support we would have liked due to austerity measures, we made this event possible thanks to the contributions of local tradespeople, supporters, and volunteers. Events like this also help promote our region. I would like to thank everyone who took part.”

No Tolerance for Environmental Pollution in Fethiye

FETHIYE, TURKEY – Fethiye Municipality has taken firm action against environmental pollution by installing photo trap cameras at key locations throughout the district. These devices are being used to identify individuals who dispose of waste irregularly and outside designated bins. Offenders now face administrative fines of up to 152,000 TL.

Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca shared footage captured by the cameras on his social media platforms, underlining the municipality’s determined stance in tackling illegal waste disposal. The municipality reported that criminal procedures have already been initiated against those identified via the photo traps.

According to officials, individuals found polluting the environment will be fined between 2,953 TL and 91,658 TL under the Law on Violations. If the offence is committed by a legal entity, the fine may increase to 152,406 TL. Authorities called on the public to act more responsibly and reminded citizens that a clean Fethiye is everyone’s responsibility.

In his statement, Mayor Alim Karaca stressed that municipal teams are on duty 24/7 to maintain Fethiye’s cleanliness and natural beauty. “Fethiye belongs to all of us,” Karaca said. “Nobody has the right to pollute our Fethiye, which is a paradise on earth. We currently have 20 camera traps in operation and plan to increase this number to 100.”

Municipality officials urged residents and visitors alike to be mindful of their environmental impact and to help protect the town’s unique natural landscape.

Istanbul Introduces Fines for Loud Music in Public Spaces

ISTANBUL, TURKEY – The Istanbul Governor’s Office has announced that administrative fines will be imposed on individuals who disturb the public by creating noise with personal music devices in squares, crowded open areas, public transportation vehicles, stops, coastal areas, and beaches.

In a statement, the Governor’s Office noted, “Recent complaints received by our office indicate that noise is being caused by personal music devices in public transportation vehicles, stops, beaches, coastal areas, picnic spots, and other public spaces where people gather in large numbers.”

The statement added that necessary measures will be taken to address the issue: “Individuals who create noise and disturb the environment with personal music devices in squares, crowded open areas, public transportation vehicles, stops, coastal areas, and beaches will be subject to administrative fines in accordance with Article 36 of the Misdemeanor Law No. 5326. In this context, necessary precautions will be taken, and inspections will be increased through coordination between district governorates, local administrations, general law enforcement, and municipal police units.”

Playing music in public spaces is a commonly observed practice in Istanbul, especially in lively areas such as squares, parks, and public transportation hubs. From portable speakers to personal sound systems, individuals often play music in ways that reflect the city’s energetic and expressive street culture.

However, this habit, though embraced by some, has increasingly drawn complaints due to its disruptive impact on public order and the shared urban environment.

Individuals found violating the new regulations may face fines of 1,406 Turkish Liras (approximately $35), while businesses could be penalised with fines ranging from 30,478 liras ($766) up to 152,895 liras ($3,843).

Local governments, law enforcement, and municipal police units will step up inspections and enforce the regulations under the coordination of district governorates.

This initiative aligns with broader national efforts to reduce noise pollution. The Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Ministry recently finalised environmental noise action plans for 22 provinces, including Istanbul. These plans focus on reducing urban noise through measures such as acoustic zoning, protecting quiet areas, and infrastructure solutions like noise barriers.

Turkey Enters Critical Wildfire Season as Aydın Blaze Forces Evacuations

TURKEY Turkey has entered a high-alert wildfire season marked by soaring temperatures, prolonged drought, and heightened fire risks—conditions that have already triggered major incidents, including a fast-moving forest fire in the Aegean city of Aydın on June 21.

The blaze, which began in agricultural and shrubland areas, quickly spread to nearby forests, prompting the evacuation of an entire neighbourhood and the mobilization of extensive firefighting resources.

Night-vision helicopters worked through the night, and by the morning of June 22, the fire was successfully brought under control. While the cause is still under investigation, preliminary findings suggest an explosion at an electrical transformer may have ignited the fire.

Three individuals were treated for smoke inhalation, though no serious injuries were reported.

Heightened Fire Risk Across Turkey

Wildfires are a seasonal challenge in Turkey , especially in the Aegean and Mediterranean regions, where high temperatures and dry air create ideal conditions for fires to ignite and spread.

Experts warn that the current environmental conditions are pushing Turkey into a critical fire danger period.

“More than 11 consecutive rainless days, combined with low humidity and soaring temperatures, significantly increase the wildfire risk,” said Professor Şermin Tağıl, an expert in geographic information systems. “If this trend continues, we could face even more dangerous fire outbreaks in the coming months.”

Istanbul Forest Ban Announced

In response to rising concerns, Istanbul authorities have introduced a forest access ban effective from June 23 to October 15, aimed at reducing the risk of human-caused fires.

The ban includes:

  • 🚫 No entry to forested areas
  • 🔥 Prohibition on lighting fires or barbecues
  • 🚭 Ban on using gas canisters and smoking hookahs in forests

The Istanbul Governor’s Office cited increased summer tourism and outdoor activity as major fire hazards and stressed the importance of proactive prevention.

As Turkey faces a challenging summer ahead, officials urge all residents and tourists to act responsibly and report any signs of fire immediately to the 112 Emergency Call Centre. Public cooperation is considered essential in avoiding future disasters and protecting the country’s natural heritage.

Small-Scale Fire Near Amintas Rock Tombs Quickly Contained

FETHIYE, MUĞLA A small-scale fire broke out this afternoon in the grassy area surrounding the historic Amintas Rock Tombs in Fethiye, prompting swift action from local emergency teams.

The fire, believed to have started in dry stubble near the excavation site, was quickly brought under control thanks to the rapid response of firefighting teams. No damage was reported to the ancient tombs, which are among Fethiye’s most iconic landmarks and a major attraction for both domestic and international tourists.

Although the exact cause of the fire remains undetermined, authorities noted that the dry grass and windy conditions in the area posed a serious risk of the fire spreading. Fortunately, thanks to the coordinated efforts of the intervention teams, the flames were contained before they could reach the excavation zone or threaten the integrity of the tombs.

Officials have reminded the public to be vigilant, especially during the hot summer months when fire risks are significantly heightened due to low humidity and high temperatures.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

New Traffic Relief System Launched to Ease Congestion in Fethiye

FETHIYE, TURKEY – A new boarding and disembarkation point has been officially implemented on Atatürk Street in Fethiye, as part of a joint initiative by Fethiye Municipality and Muğla Metropolitan Municipality to ease seasonal traffic congestion and enhance tourist safety.

With thousands of tourists arriving daily for boat tours of the famous 12 islands and bays, Atatürk Street has become a significant traffic bottleneck, especially during the busy morning and evening hours. To address this, a 50-metre stretch opposite the Likya Business Centre has now been designated as a fixed landing and boarding area, exclusively for TÜRSAB-certified tour buses. The new system will remain in effect until 15 November 2025.

It is now prohibited for tour vehicles to pick up or drop off passengers outside this designated area. A license plate recognition system has been installed to monitor access and ensure compliance. Tour buses violating the rule may face penalties.

Özgen Uysal, President of TÜRSAB’s Western Mediterranean Regional Representative Board, praised the move:

“Fethiye is a vital tourism destination. This arrangement not only enhances the safety of our guests but also helps us avoid the chaos previously experienced in traffic. We thank Mayor Alim Karaca and Metropolitan Mayor Ahmet Aras for supporting tourism in the region.”

Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca underlined the importance of the initiative:

“Tourist safety is our top priority. This system will help us manage traffic flow better during peak times, and it’s just the beginning. We are planning a series of infrastructure projects to relieve pressure across the town.”

Future Projects in the Pipeline

Mayor Karaca revealed further plans aimed at solving the town’s long-term traffic issues, including:

  • Construction of a multi-storey car park in the Salı Pazarı area, with plans awaiting final approval from the Ministry in Ankara.
  • Introduction of an electric vehicle shuttle service within the city.
  • Implementation of smart junction systems to improve traffic coordination.
  • Relocation of the intercity bus terminal to a newly expropriated 8,000 sqm area near Çamköy, with an additional 17,000 sqm pending acquisition.
  • Development of alternative road networks to reduce congestion in central Fethiye.

Mayor Karaca emphasised the importance of cooperation:

“We are tackling these issues together—with our municipalities, TÜRSAB, and local stakeholders. As Fethiye continues to grow in popularity both nationally and internationally, we must act now to ensure our infrastructure keeps pace.”

The new traffic regulation is already being enforced, with local businesses and tour operators expressing hope that the system will create a safer, more organised experience for tourists and residents alike.

For further details on the implementation or upcoming infrastructure projects, residents and visitors are encouraged to follow official communications from Fethiye Municipality.

Long Queues on Fethiye-Rhodes Ferry Route Set to End with New Measures

FETHIYE, TURKEY In a significant move to boost regional tourism and streamline travel, the long-standing issue of queues at the Fethiye-Rhodes ferry terminal is finally being resolved. A coordinated effort between public institutions and tourism stakeholders has led to major improvements at the Fethiye customs gate, promising faster and more efficient passenger processing for travellers between Türkiye and Greece.

The initiative was spearheaded by the Fethiye Municipality, Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FTSO), IMEAK Chamber of Shipping Fethiye Branch, TÜRSAB Western Mediterranean BTK, Fethiye Hoteliers Union Association, Ölüdeniz Tourism Development Cooperative, and supported by the Fethiye Customs Directorate, Port Authority, Muğla Metropolitan Municipality, and the Fethiye Police Department.

Key Improvements Implemented

As a direct response to concerns raised during a 3-day delegation visit to Rhodes in early May, several upgrades have now been completed at the Fethiye port:

  • 👮‍♂️ Number of police and passport control cabins doubled from 2 to 4
  • 📸 Facial recognition cameras and IT infrastructure updated to modern standards
  • 🚪 Improved layout of customs area for smoother passenger flow

These changes are already in effect and are expected to drastically reduce waiting times for both entry and exit procedures during peak travel periods.

Ferry Services Expanding from July 1

In addition to infrastructure improvements, morning ferry trips from Rhodes to Fethiye—a key request from Greek tourism agencies—have now begun. The first test voyage took place on June 15, receiving high demand, and full service expansion is set for July 1.

“We believe that these changes will strengthen ties between Fethiye and Rhodes, contributing not only to tourism but also to trade and cultural exchange,” the delegation said in a joint statement.

Delegation Thanks Officials for Swift Action

A thank-you visit was recently paid by a delegation including:

  • Oğuz Bolelli, Deputy Mayor of Fethiye
  • Osman Çıralı, Chairman of FTSO
  • Özgen Uysal, Chairman of TÜRSAB Western Mediterranean BTK
  • İlkay Tugay, Chairman of the Chamber of Shipping Fethiye Branch
  • Saffet Dündar, Manager of Fethiye Tourism Information Office

They expressed gratitude to Fethiye Customs Director Bülent Kınalı, Port Director Çetin Çiftci, and supporting institutions for their swift response in implementing solutions.

“Thanks to this collaboration, we’ve addressed one of the major bottlenecks impacting cross-border travel. We thank everyone involved in facilitating a smoother, more welcoming experience for visitors,” the delegation noted.

With enhanced infrastructure and increased ferry frequency, Fethiye is poised for a stronger tourism season, with easier and more enjoyable travel between the Turkish coast and the Greek island of Rhodes.

Crackdown on Illegal Holiday Rentals in Fethiye Continues — Over 6 Million TL in Fines Issued

FETHIYE, TURKEY Authorities in Fethiye have intensified inspections on unlicensed holiday rentals, resulting in administrative fines exceeding 6 million TL as part of a wider effort to regulate the booming tourism accommodation sector.

During recent inspections, 42 villas found to be operating without the mandatory “Tourism Rental Document” were hit with a combined penalty of 6,045,060 TL. Each property was fined 143,930 TL for its first offence under current regulations.

Officials warned that repeat violations would face significantly higher penalties:

  • Second offence: 719,650 TL
  • Third offence: 1,439,300 TL

With increasing demand for short-term rentals during the tourism season, Fethiye has become a hotspot for both legal and illegal holiday accommodations. Authorities have responded by stepping up checks to ensure compliance with tourism legislation designed to protect guests, regulate the market, and ensure tax and safety obligations are met.

Local enforcement teams have announced that inspections will continue throughout the summer, and property owners are being urged to apply for the necessary permits before offering their homes for short-term rental.

Warning to Homeowners

Authorities have reminded landlords that offering a property for tourism purposes without official registration is a serious offence. The escalating scale of fines is intended to deter repeat violations and encourage owners to operate legally.

“Tourism is vital to our region, but it must be managed responsibly,” an inspection official stated. “We’re committed to ensuring guest safety and market fairness by continuing these inspections without interruption.”

Property owners in Fethiye who wish to rent their homes legally can apply for a Tourism Rental Document through the relevant provincial tourism authority. Additional details and application procedures are available through official government channels.

Ancient city of Tralleis in western Türkiye to welcome visitors after decades of excavations

AYDIN, TURKEY – The ancient city of Tralleis, nestled in the Efeler district of western Turkey’s Aydın province, is preparing to welcome visitors for the first time following decades of dedicated archaeological work.

Founded nearly 3,000 years ago by Thracians and Argives, Tralleis is believed to be the birthplace of the world’s first notated music. This historic city, rich in cultural and architectural heritage, has undergone extensive excavation and restoration since work began in 1996.

Among its standout features is the gymnasium complex, commonly referred to as the Triumphal Arch, which still stands as a striking monument to Roman engineering. Other key remains include a marble-paved avenue, Roman baths, a theatre, agora, temples, early Christian churches, and vast necropolises.

Professor Murat Çekilmez of Aydın Adnan Menderes University, who heads the excavation project, told Anadolu Agency that preparations are nearing completion to open Tralleis to the public by August 2025. Çekilmez has been involved in the site since his student years and continues to lead excavations with a tireless dedication, often working over 10 hours a day during the field season.

“Visitors will soon be able to walk the same marble-paved streets as ancient Tralleians did centuries ago,” Çekilmez said. “With continued restoration and landscaping, we aim to position Tralleis as a cultural focal point for the region.”

Funding from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s ‘Heritage for the Future Project’ has enabled completion of critical restoration tenders and is paving the way for the site’s long-awaited public debut.

The official opening in August 2025 is expected to significantly boost cultural tourism in Aydın, offering a rare glimpse into one of the Aegean’s most storied ancient settlements.

Tourism in Fethiye Hanging by a Thread – Chairman of TÜRSAB Calls for Balance

Plus: Warning from Muğla MP as Crisis Deepens Across Region

FETHIYE, TURKEY – Tourism in one of Turkey’s most iconic holiday destinations is facing a serious downturn, with industry leaders warning of stagnation and missed expectations as the season enters its crucial mid-point.

Özgen Uysal, Chairman of the Fethiye Regional Representative Board (BTK) of the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TÜRSAB), said despite steady airport arrivals, activity in the tourism sector remains weak. Traditional draws like boat tours, jeep safaris and paragliding are seeing minimal interest. “Today is June 21, and a third of the season is already behind us. But on the ground, business is worryingly slow,” Uysal said.

He attributed the situation to multiple pressures, including the Iran-Israel conflict, which caused a sharp drop in early reservations, and the low exchange rate, which has made Turkey a more expensive destination for foreign tourists. “Flights are up, especially from the UK, but this hasn’t translated to occupancy,” Uysal said. He also condemned recent viral images of unruly nightlife behaviour, saying such tourists harm the region’s image: “Tourism should mean quality—we don’t need this kind of reputation.”

Despite the challenges, Uysal encouraged local and expat residents to rediscover the region’s beauty: “From Marmaris to Dalyan, Fethiye to Ölüdeniz—the whole Dalaman Airport corridor awaits. We wish everyone a beautiful summer season.”

Meanwhile, a Warning from Muğla’s Representative

Echoing the alarm, Gizem Özcan, CHP Member of Parliament for Muğla, delivered a stark warning in the Turkish Grand National Assembly, declaring that the expected summer boom has “turned into total collapse.” She painted a dire picture: collapsing bookings, fleeing tourists, struggling shopkeepers and rising unemployment among seasonal workers.

“Muğla’s economy is hanging by a thread. Inflation hasn’t just crushed household budgets—it’s flattened tourism too,” Özcan said, calling for an urgent and comprehensive state-backed support plan. “A tourism emergency plan must be launched immediately to save small businesses and revive the region’s economy.”

As concerns grow from Fethiye to the wider Muğla province, pressure is mounting for swift action to rescue one of Turkey’s most vital industries before the season slips away entirely.

President Taşar Urges Caution Against Pirate Taxis, Calls for Improvements in Fethiye Transport

FETHIYE, TURKEY – President of the Fethiye Drivers and Car Dealers Chamber, Şaban Taşar, has issued a strong warning against the use of unlicensed “pirate taxis,” echoing recent guidance from the British Foreign Office urging tourists to choose official, metered taxis during their stay in Turkey.

Taşar emphasised the importance of passengers verifying that vehicles are licensed and that taximeters are switched on. He urged both local and foreign visitors to use yellow commercial taxis, which are regulated and transparent, to avoid unsafe or illegal transport options advertised through informal channels and ride-sharing platforms.

In addition to addressing unlicensed taxis, Taşar highlighted several pressing transportation issues affecting the region, especially during the summer season. He cited regular traffic congestion on the Ölüdeniz and coastal roads, urging residents and visitors to favour public transport over private vehicles, particularly in popular areas like Ölüdeniz, Karagözler, the Yarımada, and Çalış.

Taşar also stressed the urgent need for increased parking infrastructure in Fethiye and Ölüdeniz, warning that limited space and rising demand are putting pressure on already stretched facilities. “To preserve the beauty and efficiency of our tourism areas, parking needs must be prioritised,” he said.

Commenting on taxi fare regulations, Taşar reminded the public that Fethiye’s taxi rates are revised only once a year, with the current base fare set at 200 TL, an opening fee of 120 TL, and a per-kilometre rate of 40 TL. He urged both drivers and passengers to ensure that taximeters are activated at the start of each journey.

Acknowledging that the tourism season has not met expectations and that rising costs continue to challenge drivers, Taşar encouraged businesses in the transport sector to reassess their pricing and service quality to remain competitive. “There are claims that some surrounding tourism centres are offering more affordable services,” he said. “Whether true or not, we must improve both our prices and quality to keep Fethiye attractive.”

Despite the challenges, Taşar expressed optimism about Fethiye’s future. “Fethiye is a world-class destination. By maintaining high standards and ensuring safe, legal transport options, we believe the city will reclaim its rightful place in tourism.”

Forest Entry Bans Announced for Antalya and Muğla to Prevent Summer Wildfires

As Turkey braces for what is expected to be one of the hottest summers on record, the Governorships of Antalya and Muğla have both introduced strict seasonal bans on access to forested areas. These measures aim to protect life, property, and the environment amid a rising risk of wildfires.

Antalya: Entry Ban in Effect from 1 May to 31 October 2025

At a recent Forest Fire Combat Commission Meeting, chaired by Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin, officials reviewed preparations for the 2025 fire season. A new circular was issued, prohibiting entry into forest areas—except for specified zones—between 1 May and 31 October.

Key highlights of the Antalya measures include:

  • General forest access prohibited, except in designated areas listed in the circular.
  • Barbecues, samovars, and open flames banned in picnic areas between 21:00 and 08:30, and completely prohibited in undesignated forest areas.
  • Burning stubble, discarding unextinguished cigarettes, and using fireworks or wish balloons is banned within a 4 km radius of forests or village borders.

Despite 275 forest fires in 2024, only 333 hectares were lost, thanks to rapid response teams and improved coordination. Governor Şahin credited the province’s success to hard-learned lessons from the devastating 2021 Manavgat fire, which burned 60,000 hectares.

Antalya is entering the 2025 season with:

  • Over 1,000 forest personnel,
  • 114 water trucks, 35 water supply vehicles,
  • 7 helicopters, 5 planes, and 1 UAV.

Muğla: Entry Ban from 3 June to 31 October 2025

The Muğla Governorship has also announced a forest entry ban across 50 zones from 3 June to 31 October, following a decision by the Muğla Province Forest Fire Fighting Commission.

The rules are comprehensive and apply to high-tourism districts like Marmaris, Bodrum, Fethiye, Milas, Datça, Köyceğiz, and Dalaman:

  • Forest access is restricted to authorised personnel only.
  • Picnics and barbecues are banned outside registered picnic sites, and fires are completely prohibited even in those. Only cold food is permitted.
  • Burning of stubble, garden waste, vineyards and orchards is prohibited in all villages and neighbourhoods.
  • Harvesting machinery operators must carry a 2-tonne water tanker and two 12 kg fire extinguishers.
  • Fireworks, wish balloons and similar flammable items are banned in tourist areas, campsites and public events.
  • Leaving waste in forest areas—especially flammable or glass materials—is strictly forbidden.
  • Industrial facilities, energy providers, and municipalities must implement rigorous fire-prevention protocols.

Violations will be penalised under the Forestry Law, Provincial Administration Law, and Law on Misdemeanours. Citizens are urged to call 112 to report any sign of fire.

With both Antalya and Muğla home to vast stretches of Turkey’s most visited and biodiverse forested regions, officials are urging both residents and visitors to respect the restrictions.

These proactive measures are crucial to preventing the kind of large-scale devastation that has struck in previous years. By working together and staying vigilant, we can help protect Turkey’s forests and the communities that depend on them.

Garden Fire in Fethiye: Quick Response Prevents Disaster

FETHIYE, TURKEY – A fire that broke out in the garden of a house in the Karaçulha Neighborhood caused alarm on Friday but was swiftly brought under control by firefighters, preventing further damage to nearby homes and agricultural land.

The blaze erupted for unknown reasons in the Çalıca-Gölyeri area, sending dense smoke into the air. Local residents quickly alerted emergency services by calling the 112 Emergency Call Center. In response, units from the Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department were promptly dispatched to the scene.

Thanks to their rapid intervention, the flames were extinguished before spreading further. While the house itself was not affected, various garden items were destroyed, and there was material damage to the surrounding agricultural land.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. No injuries were reported. The incident serves as a reminder of the heightened fire risk in the region during the dry summer months.

Divers Play Drums and Zurna Underwater in Fethiye to Showcase Marine Beauty

FETHIYE, TURKEY – In a unique and vibrant display, a group of divers in Fethiye played traditional Turkish drums and zurna beneath the sea in an effort to highlight the underwater wonders of the region and promote diving tourism.

The eye-catching event took place in Dalyan Bay, where three divers from the Fethiye Diving School — Önder Diktaş, Berkay Çetin, and Burkay Kayıran — descended to a depth of 5 metres with their instruments. For around 15 minutes, the trio performed traditional dance tunes among the fish, creating a lively underwater show.

In a particularly memorable moment, one diver set aside his zurna, picked up a yellow handkerchief, and danced the halay, a traditional folk dance, to the beat of the drums — all while submerged.

“We wanted to draw attention to the beauty of the seabed by playing drums and zurna among the fish,” said Diving Instructor Önder Diktaş. “The tourism season has begun, and we invite everyone to discover Fethiye’s underwater world. Diving tourism holds a valuable place in Turkish tourism, and the seabed is as rich and stunning as the country’s historical and natural landmarks.”

The underwater performance was filmed by camera and later shared on social media, where it quickly gained attention and praise for its creativity and celebration of marine life. The divers hope their unusual approach will inspire more locals and tourists to explore the fascinating depths of Fethiye’s coast.

Brown Waters in Izmit Bay Prompt Investigation and Environmental Concern

IZMIT BAY, TURKEY – Parts of Izmit Bay in northwestern Türkiye have turned brown, triggering alarm and an environmental investigation. Aerial images revealed large discoloured patches in the coastal waters, prompting local authorities to begin sampling and analysis.

Experts, including Professor Halim Aytekin Ergül of Kocaeli University, identified the cause as a large bloom of Prorocentrum micans, a type of dinoflagellate phytoplankton. While naturally occurring, such blooms can damage marine ecosystems by harming species like amphipods and macro-benthic organisms, which play vital roles in the food chain.

Though not harmful to humans, these blooms can disrupt local ecosystems and are linked to mucilage, or “sea snot” – a sticky substance that chokes marine life. Ergül pointed to population growth and wastewater discharge as key stressors on the bay, despite the presence of advanced treatment plants.

He warned that the region’s environmental capacity is being exceeded and called for urgent upgrades to wastewater systems and stricter controls on pollution to prevent future ecological damage.

Whistled Language Unites Kuşköy and Canary Islands in Cross-Cultural Visit

GİRESUN, TURKEY – Two whistled language heritage bearers from Spain’s Canary Islands visited the remote village of Kuşköy in Turkey’s Black Sea province of Giresun, where the centuries-old tradition of whistled communication — locally known as bird language — continues to echo across the mountains.

Organised under the auspices of Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the visit brought José Molina González and Carmen Castilla Padilla from La Gomera Island to the Çanakçı district, where they were warmly welcomed by District Governor Furkan Aksoy.

Kuşköy, perched at 500 metres above sea level, has long preserved its unique form of whistled language, used by villagers to communicate across steep valleys and rugged terrain. During the visit, local residents demonstrated how they use the language in daily life, engaging their Spanish guests with practical examples and friendly whistled exchanges.

Giresun University academic Hayrettin Karadeniz described the encounter as a “cultural convergence,” highlighting the deep similarities between the whistled traditions of Kuşköy and La Gomera. “This is a powerful reminder of how geography shapes human expression. It’s uplifting to see this rare form of intangible heritage recognised and shared across borders,” he said.

Padilla expressed admiration for the continuation of the whistled language in Kuşköy. “Like in our mountainous region, we use simple phrases to bridge distance. It’s beautiful to see the same tradition thrive here,” she remarked.

The visit marks an important step in preserving and promoting the world’s few remaining whistled languages, underscoring their cultural value and the importance of inter-community collaboration.

143 Hotels in Fethiye Unable to Open Due to Missing Documents

As the summer season gets underway in Fethiye, 143 hotels remain closed due to missing tourism business certificates. Despite growing tourism activity in the region, these establishments have not been granted the necessary operating permits as they have yet to complete the required documentation.

Local authorities have confirmed that hotels without valid tourism business certificates are not permitted to open. Once these deficiencies are addressed, businesses can apply for inspections and, if approved, will be allowed to welcome guests.

Recognised as one of Turkey’s most iconic beaches, Kumburnu Beach Of Lagoon continues to attract thousands of local and international tourists with its crystal-clear turquoise waters, stunning natural surroundings, and unique aerial views that have made it a favourite among paragliders. The beach is frequently used in tourism campaigns to showcase the beauty of the Turkish Riviera.

Paragliding Trainee Falls into Ölüdeniz After Parachute Malfunction – Rescued with Minor Injuries

A paragliding trainee had a narrow escape in Fethiye’s Ölüdeniz after her spare parachute failed to open, causing her to fall into the sea. The pilot, identified as Esra S., is currently receiving treatment at Fethiye State Hospital and is reported to be in good condition.

According to reports, Esra S. had travelled to Fethiye to receive paragliding training and ascended Babadağ’s 1,700-metre runway via cable car on the morning of 16 June. While flying solo over the iconic Ölüdeniz coastline, approximately 300 metres from shore and 150 metres above the sea, her main parachute malfunctioned. When the reserve chute also failed to open, she plunged into the water below.

Nearby speedboat operators witnessed the fall and quickly launched a rescue effort. Meanwhile, bystanders alerted emergency services by calling 112 Emergency Call Centre. Within minutes, health, coast guard and gendarmerie teams arrived at the scene.

Esra S. was pulled from the sea by speedboat and brought to Belcekız Beach, where paramedics administered first aid on board before transferring her via stretcher to an ambulance. She was then taken to Fethiye State Hospital for further treatment. Fortunately, her injuries were described as minor, and her overall condition is stable.

The incident underscores the importance of stringent safety checks and preparedness in high-adrenaline sports like paragliding, particularly in popular destinations such as Babadağ, which attracts thousands of paragliders each year.

Coasts Need Protection, Not Panic: Experts Urge Calm Over Shark Sightings

Recent shark sightings along Turkey’s Aegean and Mediterranean coasts have stirred public concern — but marine experts say panic is unnecessary and potentially harmful. Far from being man-eating threats, sharks are essential to marine ecosystems and face growing danger from climate change, coastal destruction, and overfishing.

While rare shark appearances — like the one recently recorded in Gökova and another off Mersin — often grab headlines and feed fear, the risk to humans is extremely low. According to the Australian Institute of Marine Science, fewer than 10 shark-related deaths occur globally each year, compared to 150 caused by falling coconuts. National Geographic notes the odds of a fatal shark attack are 1 in 3.7 million — but 100 million sharks are killed annually by humans.

Dr. Hakan Kabasakal, a cartilaginous fish expert for WWF Türkiye, confirms that species such as the mako, blue shark, and sand shark are occasionally spotted in Turkish waters during the summer. Rare species like the great white shark have been seen — the last time in 2020 — but these sightings are extremely infrequent.

Marine biologists stress that sharks play a vital role in maintaining biodiversity by removing sick and weak marine life, helping ecosystems stay balanced. Kabasakal warns that one in three shark species could face extinction this century, leading to a potential 80% loss in ocean biofunction.

The message from experts is clear: don’t fear sharks — protect them. Their survival is critical to the future of the planet’s oceans.

From Baklava to Business: Turkish Delicacies Showcased in UK Parliament

British MPs gathered at Westminster this week for “Taste of Türkiye”, an event celebrating Türkiye’s rich culinary heritage and growing economic ties with the UK. Organised by Labour MP Afzal Khan, the event offered guests a flavourful journey through Turkish culture, while also highlighting the strength of bilateral trade relations.

Attendees, including MPs Naz Shah, Jeff Smith, and Chris Law, enjoyed an array of traditional Turkish delicacies — from baklava, borek, and sarma (stuffed vine leaves) to Turkish coffee, cheeses, and lokum (Turkish delight). The gathering also offered an opportunity for UK parliamentarians to meet with Turkish producers and brand representatives, showcasing some of Türkiye’s most iconic exports.

“With over £28 billion ($38 billion) in trade in 2024, Türkiye is the UK’s 16th largest trading partner and home to a significant diaspora here in the UK,” said Khan. “As we look ahead to Free Trade Agreement negotiations, this event offers a timely opportunity to celebrate our strong bilateral relationship.”

The event not only honoured the vibrant Turkish community in the UK, but also underscored the deepening partnership between London and Ankara — at a time when global trade and cultural diplomacy are more important than ever.

2,000 flamingo chicks die in Turkey’s Lake Tuz due to drought

Lake Tuz, Turkey’s second-largest lake and a vital breeding ground for flamingos, has once again witnessed a tragic mass die-off of flamingo chicks during this year’s migration season. According to field inspection teams, approximately 2,000 newly hatched flamingos have died after being unable to access sufficient water.

Straddling the provinces of Konya, Ankara, and Aksaray, Lake Tuz is a closed basin with no natural outlet. Its strategic position along major bird migration routes makes it a seasonal sanctuary for thousands of bird species in the spring and summer. Each year, the lake—often referred to as “flamingo paradise”—hosts between 20,000 and 22,000 flamingos during the breeding season.

However, recent inspections revealed distressing scenes in the lake’s nesting areas. Investigators found the dead chicks scattered across dry breeding grounds. The main cause was identified as uncontrolled agricultural irrigation, which has diverted water away from canals feeding the nesting zone. In addition, water levels in wells drilled to support the canal system have significantly decreased, compounding the shortage.

A similar crisis occurred in 2021, prompting the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change to drill a well to maintain water flow to the canal. Despite that intervention, the issue continues due to ongoing water mismanagement and overuse for agriculture.

Experts and environmental groups are once again calling for urgent and sustainable water management policies to protect Lake Tuz and its fragile ecosystem, warning that without immediate action, further damage to one of Turkey’s most important natural habitats is inevitable.

English Author Louis de Bernières Holds Book Signing and Interview in Fethiye

Renowned British author Louis de Bernières, best known for his novel Birds Without Wings, visited Fethiye during his holiday and held a special book signing and interview event in the historic Paspatur Bazaar. The event was supported by Fethiye secondhand bookseller Cumhur Durmaz and attracted interest from both Turkish and British literature lovers.

A Tribute to Kayaköy and Turkish History

In Birds Without Wings, Bernières masterfully tells the story of Kayaköy – the former Greek town of Levissi – and its peaceful coexistence between Muslim and Christian communities before the population exchange. The novel also touches on the early years of the Turkish Republic, the vision of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and the personal tragedies brought on by war, love, and politics.

During the event, Bernières answered audience questions about the themes, historical references, and emotional depth of the book. He spoke about the secret loves, clashing cultures, and the two clergymen of different faiths that feature prominently in the novel, all set against the backdrop of a region marked by beauty, loss, and transformation.

Now 71, Louis de Bernières shared his long-standing connection with Turkey, saying:

“I love Turkey very much; I especially find its food and warm weather very pleasant.”

He first introduced Birds Without Wings in Kayaköy back in 2011 and has visited Fethiye many times since.

The author added that he usually writes in England during the winter months, and although he often writes short stories and essays, he hinted at a new unpublished book, which he hopes to release soon.

Shared Memories in Paspatur

Bookseller Cumhur Durmaz, who organised the event, said:

“Our author is with us right now. We held our event in Paspatur Bazaar. He gave information about his book to both British and Turkish guests and shared his memories of Kayaköy. He signed his books for his loved ones.”

The day was a celebration of literature, history, and shared cultural memory — all in the heart of Fethiye.

5 Million 757 Thousand 200 TL Fine for 40 Illegal Villas in Fethiye

In Fethiye, authorities have imposed a total fine of 5,757,200 TL on 40 villas found to be operating illegally without the required tourism rental documents. The crackdown is part of intensified inspections aimed at regulating the short-term rental market and ensuring compliance with tourism legislation.

During the first round of inspections, each of the 40 illegally rented villas was fined 143,930 TL, adding up to the total penalty. Officials have made it clear that this is just the beginning:

  • A second offence will result in a fine of 719,650 TL per villa.
  • A third violation will escalate to a fine of 1,930,000 TL per property.

Some property owners have attempted to bypass the regulations by preparing fake long-term rental contracts (exceeding 100 days) for properties actually rented on a daily or weekly basis. Authorities have warned that this tactic will not be tolerated — any such case will face an immediate fine of 1,930,000 TL.

Officials have confirmed that inspections will continue and increase to ensure fair competition, prevent unregistered operations, and support the healthy development of the local tourism sector.

Property owners are reminded to obtain the tourism rental document and fulfil all legal obligations before offering their properties for short-term rental.

Fethiye Proves Itself Not Only in Tourism, But Also in Sports Activities

Fethiye, long recognised for its stunning coastline, natural beauty and historical richness, is now firmly establishing itself as a rising star in sports tourism. Thanks to its unique geography and growing investment in sporting infrastructure, the district is becoming a hub for national and international sporting events.

Harun Reşit Yiğit, Fethiye Youth and Sports District Manager, emphasised the growing importance of sports as part of alternative tourism:

“We believe that sports should be one of the most important titles of alternative tourism.”

In the 2024–2025 academic year alone, Fethiye hosted over 4,000 athletes through school sports events — a figure that doesn’t include accompanying families and guests. With most participants staying at least three nights, this contributed to an estimated 12,000 overnight stays, providing a significant boost to the local economy and the promotion of the region.

Yiğit highlighted Fethiye’s appeal to sporting organisations:

“Fethiye stands out as one of the most beautiful geographies not only in our country but also in the world. This natural beauty and geographical advantage make it a favourite destination for many sports federations and disciplines.”

The district continues to attract national and international sporting organisations, supported by coordinated efforts from local authorities, sports institutions, and government bodies.

Yiğit also expressed pride in the fact that young athletes from across the country get the chance to experience Fethiye:

“It is a separate source of pride for us that our children and young athletes from all over our country have the opportunity to get to know Fethiye.”

He thanked all stakeholders involved for their support in helping Fethiye become a model destination for sports tourism and highlighted the commitment of the District Governor and all local institutions in advancing this vision.

With its blend of natural assets and community dedication, Fethiye continues to grow not only as a summer tourism destination, but as a year-round centre for sports and activity-based tourism.

Esat Bakırcı Re-elected President of Fethiyespor

The ordinary general assembly of Fethiyespor, the 2nd League football team, took place at the Fethiye Municipality Özer Olgun Cultural Center Hall. Running unopposed, Esat Bakırcı was re-elected as club president, continuing his leadership into the new season.

The congress was attended by former club presidents, long-serving members, and loyal supporters. The meeting began with a moment of silence and the National Anthem, followed by the formation of the board of directors. Fethiye Deputy Mayor Oğuz Bolelli was appointed chairman of the board, with Cem Erdoğan as deputy chairman and Aybike Şahin as secretary.

During the meeting, Press Spokesperson Selahattin Aydemir read the activity and audit reports, which were subsequently approved by the members. Several agenda items were discussed and accepted unanimously, including a proposal to rename the Fethiyespor facilities as “Fethiyespor Esat Bakırcı Facilities” in honour of the president’s long-standing service to the club.

Addressing the financial situation, President Bakırcı reassured members, saying,

“Fethiyespor does not have a debt in the amount stated. I also forgave the club’s debt to me. I have no receivables from Fethiyespor. I will personally provide even a glass of water for our team.”

He went on to outline the challenges and future plans, highlighting the importance of unity and financial responsibility:

“In the last period, our board members received tax notifications. We’ve cleared them all. There is currently a tax office seizure on properties I own. Still, we’ll undertake major initiatives in the new season.”

Bakırcı acknowledged the loss of home-field advantage due to stadium conditions and said that efforts are ongoing to address the issue. He also noted the increasing financial demands in professional football:

“We want to strengthen the squad for the new season. The transfer demands we’re seeing are around 10 million TL per player. Last season’s championship teams had budgets of 250 million TL, while ours was only 40 million TL. Yet, we still had a successful season.”

Gratitude to Supporters and Staff

The president expressed his thanks to Lokman Hekim Esnaf Hospital for their vital support and extended appreciation to the club’s technical director Selahaddin Dinçel for his dedication.

“We don’t currently have the means to form a championship-level squad, but if someone capable comes forward, I’ll gladly support them and even step down. The budget for such a team is around 400 million TL. Regardless, we will do everything we can to elevate Fethiyespor to its rightful place.”

2024–2025 Board Members

Under the leadership of Esat Bakırcı, the newly formed Fethiyespor Board of Directors includes:

Metin Sevinç, Mehmet Soydemir, Durcan Kaya, Halil Dillare Uran, Osman Yiğit, Akhan Ugan, Öztürk Günal, Cengiz Halis, Uğur Keskin, Fahri Kıvanç Yılmaz, Osman Kazımlar, Cem Tufan, Hüseyin Okkabas, Emrah Aydın, Selahattin Aydemir, Suphi Demiray, Yunus Yelekin, Ramazan Göktepe, Harun Reşit Yiğit, Nihat Oran, Deniz Koyuncu, Mert Demir

Supervisory Board Members: Münire Yanıklar, Erol Kılıç, Selda Köse

Fethiyespor now looks ahead to the new season with renewed leadership, community support, and ambitious plans for growth both on and off the pitch.

Coast Guard Cleans Seabed in Fethiye for World Environment Day

To mark World Environment Day, the Fethiye Coast Guard Command diving team carried out a seabed cleaning operation along Fethiye Kordon, removing approximately 1.5 tons of waste in just two hours.

The operation revealed a variety of debris—including vehicle tires, batteries, plastic crates, metal furniture parts, glass bottles, and plastic chairs—collected from a relatively short stretch of coastline. The waste was displayed at an awareness stand in Beşkaza Square, drawing the attention of residents and visitors alike.

Coast Guard Commander Burak Akanpınar and Fethiye Deputy Mayor Oğuz Bolelli visited the stand, expressing both appreciation and concern over the findings. Deputy Mayor Bolelli praised the Coast Guard for their continued commitment to environmental responsibility and public safety.

Unmanned Lifesaving Vehicle Demonstrated

As part of the exhibit, the Coast Guard also showcased their unmanned lifesaving vehicle and underwater transfer vehicle. The lifesaving vehicle can respond to emergency situations up to 500 metres away, reach speeds of 15 km/h, and carry up to 200 kg. Meanwhile, the underwater transfer vehicle enhances diving operations by allowing personnel to stay submerged longer and cover larger areas.

The event not only highlighted the importance of environmental protection but also showcased the advanced capabilities of the Coast Guard in both safety and sustainability.

📍 The display at Beşkaza Square drew large crowds, with many residents expressing surprise at the quantity and variety of waste removed from the sea.

Significant World Environment Day Initiative at Ölüdeniz Kumburnu Beach

In honour of World Environment Day on June 5th, an important environmental initiative took place at Fethiye’s Ölüdeniz Kumburnu Beach, drawing attention to the importance of preserving nature and combating pollution.

Zehra Dilek, Public Relations Officer of Ölüdeniz Kumburnu Beach Operations, shared a statement emphasising the significance of the day and the urgent environmental issues facing the world.

“June 5th World Environment Day is a vital occasion declared by the United Nations to raise environmental awareness, promote nature conservation, and encourage sustainable living, Dilek said. Today, global challenges such as the climate crisis and environmental pollution threaten not only our present but our future as well. Cleanliness is essential not only in our personal spaces but for public health too.

To mark the occasion, the beach operations team conducted a comprehensive coastal and seabed clean-up, involving diving teams working underwater and on-site personnel clearing the shore. The event also highlighted efforts to reduce the use of plastics, aligning with broader sustainability goals.

Protecting Ölüdeniz Kumburnu Beach—one of the natural treasures of the world—and passing it on to future generations is a responsibility that belongs to all of us,” Dilek added.

The event served as a powerful reminder of the role individuals and institutions play in safeguarding the environment and preserving cultural and ecological heritage.

Explosion Rocks Motor Yacht During Refuelling at Bodrum Marina

An explosion occurred on a 15-metre motor yacht during refuelling at a marina in Bodrum, in Turkey’s Muğla province, injuring three people and causing significant damage to the vessel.

The yacht, which had docked at a fuel station in the marina, exploded shortly after refuelling as it began to depart. The force of the blast damaged a large portion of the boat, causing it to take on water and partially sink.

Three people were injured in the incident, including one person who was onshore at the time. Emergency teams, including firefighters and paramedics, were quickly dispatched to the scene. The injured were transported to local hospitals by ambulance.

Efforts are now underway to recover the sunken vessel.

The dramatic moment of the explosion was captured by a workplace security camera. The footage shows the yacht erupting in a sudden blast as it pulls away from the dock, with debris flying in all directions.

Turkey Faces Critical Shortage of Animal Shelters Amid Rising Stray Dog Population

With an estimated 3.5 to 4 million stray dogs across Turkey, the country is facing a significant public and animal welfare challenge, according to Ali Eroğlu, President of the Central Council of the Turkish Veterinary Medical Association.

During a visit to Aksaray in central Turkey on Wednesday, Eroğlu addressed the growing concerns around stray dogs, attacks, and the severe lack of shelter infrastructure.

“As the Turkish Veterinary Medical Association, we view this as a strategic national issue. It requires strong legislation, well-structured institutions, and sufficient funding,” said Eroğlu.

He revealed that more than 1,000 municipalities currently lack animal shelters, leaving millions of stray animals with nowhere to go.

Eroğlu referenced Law No. 7527, which requires municipalities to establish shelters and natural living areas for stray animals. The law remains in effect following its recent rejection of appeal by the Constitutional Court.

“Shelters must be constructed without delay,” he said. “Trying to house 20 or 30 animals in a facility built for just a few will only create new problems.”

Eroğlu also addressed misconceptions about neutering, clarifying that sterilised animals are not necessarily non-aggressive.

“The purpose of sterilisation is to control population growth, not to change behaviour,” he noted. “Our current data suggests Turkey has around 4 million stray animals, and we lack the capacity to care for them properly.”

He recalled a tragic incident in Şanlıurfa, where a young woman died after being struck by two vehicles while fleeing from a dog attack.

“We cannot allow such tragedies to continue. This issue is no longer just about animal welfare—it is a public safety crisis that must be addressed immediately,” Eroğlu emphasised.

The situation has renewed calls for urgent action, with growing public pressure on local governments to provide humane, sustainable solutions to the country’s stray animal crisis.

Quake off Gökçeada adds to country’s recent seismic activity

Turkey experienced another significant tremor on the morning of June 5, when a 4.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Gökçeada in the western province of Çanakkale, in the Aegean Sea. The quake occurred at 8:18 a.m. local time at a depth of 12.61 kilometres, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD).

Renowned earthquake expert Naci Görür explained that the earthquake originated along the northern branch of the North Anatolian Fault, the same fault segment where experts anticipate a major earthquake could strike Istanbul. He warned that the recent tremor may influence the stress distribution along this critical fault line.

This quake follows a recent series of seismic events in the region, including a 5.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Marmaris in the southwestern province of Muğla on June 3, which was shortly followed by a 5.0 magnitude tremor in the Aegean Sea near Crete, Greece.

Earlier this year, Istanbul was shaken by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake on April 23, sparking heightened concerns about the possibility of a large-scale seismic event in the region. This was followed by hundreds of aftershocks.

The recent activity underscores ongoing seismic risks in western Turkey and neighbouring areas, with experts urging continued vigilance and preparedness.

Fethiye Celebrates Culinary and Cultural Unity with 3rd International Gastronomy, Culture and Friendship Festival

Fethiye once again brought together cultures and flavours with the successful hosting of the 3rd International Gastronomy, Culture and Friendship Festival. Despite the rain, the event opened with a warm and welcoming ceremony at the Özer Olgun Cultural Center, setting the tone for a festival that celebrated cross-cultural connections between Turkey and Greece.

Chefs from both countries came together to share culinary traditions, while the festival offered a wide array of events, including folk dances, concerts, talks, and exhibitions of traditional handicrafts.

“It Started with an Idea, Now a Tradition”

Acclaimed chef Maria Ekmekçioğlu, who played a central role in founding the event, spoke at the opening and reflected on the festival’s journey.

“Thank you very much for honouring our festival. Our friends from Greece were also welcome. In the first year, this event started as just an idea, and our Fethiye Mayor embraced it,” she said. “Çiğdem Hanım gave great support, and we organised the first festival in just 15–20 days. We took the first step with journalists and chefs from Greece. The second year came more easily, and now we’ve held the third. I hope this festival continues for many years. It has now become a tradition for this city.”

A Festival Built on Women’s Efforts

Çiğdem Karaca, President of the Fethiye Likya Women’s Development Cooperative, highlighted the key role women played in the festival’s development.

“We were happy to organise our third festival,” she said. “We founded our cooperative five years ago and started this journey with great confidence. Women are the backbone of every field. We worked without profit. We even established ties in Scotland and opened a company there. We achieved something difficult, and today we’ve taken our products to an international level. As the women of Fethiye, we made a great contribution to this festival.”

“We Met for Culture, Tourism and Peace in Fethiye”

Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca underlined the broader impact of the event on the city’s image and international ties.

“We were proud to host this beautiful festival once again in Fethiye, where the Aegean and Mediterranean meet and happy people live,” he said. “Our goal was to foster friendship, peace, culture and tourism. Thanks to events like this, we’ve made Fethiye known in other countries and had the chance to promote our city.”

As part of the festival, Greek chefs, vocal artists, and members of the press visited Fethiye, touring the town and engaging in cultural exchanges.

The public opening ceremony took place at 19:00 in Beşkaza Square, followed by a lively concert by Greek musicians. The event drew enthusiastic crowds and marked another successful step in Fethiye’s growing tradition of cultural diplomacy through gastronomy.

Fethiye Captivates National Audience in Live TV Broadcast

Fethiye was thrust into the national spotlight as it hosted a live broadcast by a major national television channel, showcasing the town’s vibrant identity far beyond its reputation as a tourist destination. The special programme, aired live from Beşkaza Square, offered viewers across Turkey a rich and colourful portrait of Fethiye’s gastronomy, culture, and local enterprise.

The programme focused on Fethiye’s multi-layered character, presenting it as a thriving community that seamlessly blends natural beauty, cultural heritage, and grassroots production. Far more than just a holiday hotspot, the town was introduced as a living cultural landscape—home to dynamic cooperatives, traditional crafts, historical richness, and a strong commitment to sustainable local development.

A Feast for the Senses—and the Screen

Set against the stunning backdrop of where the Aegean and Mediterranean seas meet, the live broadcast turned Fethiye into a visual spectacle. Panoramic shots of turquoise waters, lush mountains, ancient ruins, and the vibrant energy of the town’s people created a feast for the eyes.

One of the most talked-about moments came during a sirtaki performance, which captured the joyful spirit of the ongoing International Gastronomy, Culture and Friendship Festival. The dance, performed by men and women in unison, enchanted viewers with its rhythmic beauty and visual harmony. The male dancers’ traditional hats and the women’s matching hairstyles and makeup quickly became trending topics on social media, reflecting the performance’s cultural impact.

Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca, who watched the performance live in the square, remarked on the growing importance of such events in promoting the city’s diverse identity.

Gastronomy Beyond the Plate

The broadcast didn’t just focus on the sights—it delved deep into the flavours of Fethiye. Recipes by local chefs, many of whom were women supported by cooperatives, were prepared live and celebrated for their traditional roots and regional authenticity.

The show also spotlighted handcrafted goods produced by local cooperatives and development initiatives. These segments highlighted the role of women entrepreneurs and underlined Fethiye’s commitment to socially conscious and sustainable growth. In doing so, the programme illustrated how gastronomy in Fethiye is not only a culinary treasure, but also a key pillar of its social and economic fabric.

A Living Heritage on Display

Beyond food and performance, the cultural depth of Fethiye was brought vividly to life. Viewers were taken on a journey from the ancient Lycian cities to the stone-paved alleys of Kayaköy, and from the vivid blues of Ölüdeniz to paragliders soaring above Babadağ. These features painted a picture of a town deeply rooted in history while remaining open to the world.

The programme further demonstrated how international influences, such as the collaboration between Turkish and Greek chefs during the festival, coexist with local traditions, turning Fethiye into a compelling destination for both domestic and international visitors.

A City That Speaks for Itself

With the broadcast stage transformed into a cultural platform, Fethiye found a powerful voice. The smells of traditional dishes, the energy of the crowd, and the stories of resilience and creativity combined to offer an immersive experience that went beyond typical tourism promotion.

Thanks to this special live broadcast, Fethiye was not just shown—it was felt, lived and remembered. The town emerged not only as a place to visit, but as a place to understand, rooted in community and alive with meaning.

Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Launches Fethiye–Rhodes Ferry Service

Muğla Metropolitan Municipality has officially launched a new international sea route connecting Fethiye to Rhodes, marking a significant development in regional transportation and tourism. Operated in cooperation with the İDO General Directorate, the İDO Marmara ferry departed from Fethiye Pier for its maiden voyage to the Greek island with 35 passengers on board.

The launch ceremony was attended by key figures from both the municipality and İDO, including Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Transportation Department Head Süleyman Özdemir, MUTTAŞ Board Chairman Uğur İlhami Özden, MUTTAŞ General Manager Sedat Bayrak, İDO General Manager Dr. Murat Orhan, and other officials. In a traditional maritime gesture, a bottle of water was poured as the ferry set off, symbolising a safe and successful journey.

4 Days a Week in June, Daily in High Season

The Fethiye–Rhodes route will operate four days a week in June, increasing to daily service starting in July, coinciding with the high season. The round-trip fare has been set at 85 Euros, and officials noted that frequencies may be adjusted depending on passenger demand. A new pricing regulation is also being considered for public sector employees.

Speaking at the event, Süleyman Özdemir highlighted the broader vision behind the initiative:

“We have started the first fruit of our cooperation with İDO with the Fethiye–Rhodes trip. Our Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ahmet Aras places great importance on utilising our seas. These voyages are part of that vision. Frequency may increase or decrease based on demand, and we are also working on a public employee tariff.”

İDO General Manager Dr. Murat Orhan expressed hope that the ferry service would bring positive momentum to regional tourism, while Av. Ali Özgür Kullukçu, spokesperson for the Fethiye Municipality Council Group and Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Council Member, emphasised the potential for cross-cultural ties:

“The first Rhodes trip, launched through the cooperation of Fethiye and the Metropolitan Municipality, will not only create competition on this route but will also contribute to Turkish–Greek friendship.”

The new ferry line represents a promising step forward for international tourism, economic development, and regional cooperation in the Aegean. The connection between Fethiye and Rhodes, now made more accessible, is expected to enhance travel experiences for locals and visitors alike while fostering greater cultural exchange between Turkey and Greece.

Divers Sound Alarm Over Resurgent Mucilage Crisis in Turkey’s Marmara Sea

Renowned Turkish divers and marine experts are sounding the alarm over worsening pollution and a resurgence of mucilage—also known as “sea snot”—in the Marmara Sea. Şahika Ercümen, a decorated free diver and UNDP Turkey’s “Advocate for Life Below Water,” recently undertook an awareness dive in Southern Marmara, accompanied by marine scientist Professor Mustafa Sarı and diving instructor Osman Benli. They observed mucilage layers extending up to three metres deep, signalling its growing vertical spread.

Ercümen described the underwater conditions as suffocating, with mucilage threatening marine ecosystems on an existential level. Ultra-marathon swimmer Bengisu Avcı, who encountered mucilage during training in Çanakkale, echoed these concerns, noting lifeless seascapes and visibly tainted water. She warned the threat is no longer remote but imminent.

Experts warn that untreated wastewater from millions of residents around the Marmara Sea is fuelling the crisis, which is feared to be escalating to levels seen during the 2021 environmental disaster. Calls are growing for urgent government action and greater public awareness to protect the region’s fragile marine environment.

Severe April Frost Causes Over 21 Billion Lira in Crop Losses Across Turkey

A devastating agricultural frost in April has caused an estimated 21 billion Turkish Liras ($537.2 million) in crop damage across Turkey, officials revealed to a parliamentary committee this week. The unusually harsh cold snap, lasting from April 10 to 12, brought severe temperature drops that damaged a wide range of crops.

Among the worst affected were grapes, which suffered losses of 11 billion liras ($281.2 million). Apricots, hazelnuts, apples, nectarines, peaches, cherries, plums, and walnuts were also heavily impacted.

Speaking to the parliamentary agricultural frost research committee, Bekir Engürülü, General Manager of the Agricultural Insurance Pool (TARSİM), reported that 1.1 billion liras ($28.1 million) in insurance compensation has already been paid out, with the remaining claims under evaluation.

In response to criticism over high frost insurance premiums, Engürülü defended the current pricing model. He explained that in high-risk areas, such as apricot-growing regions, claims are made on 81 out of every 100 policies. “Farmers often insure only their most vulnerable plots, which increases overall risk and therefore premium costs,” he said.

Engürülü added that the government is considering regulations that would require farmers to insure all plots of the same crop within a given district, in an effort to better distribute risk and manage premium levels.
