]]> In 2020, Mick and Trudie visited Hatay to film the historic and vibrant city of Antakya.

You can watch the original video here if you missed it.

At 4.17am on 6 February 2023, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit southern Türkiye and northern Syria.

Bridges collapsed, roads and airport tarmacs cracked and millions of lives across 11 Turkish provinces were upturned by the time the rest of the country woke up, stunned.

It was followed by a 7.7-magnitude earthquake at 13:24.

The twin earthquakes swallowed swathes of entire cities, resulting in more than 50,000 deaths.

Mick and Trudie’s return visit – one year later

A year after the earthquake, Mick and Trudie returned to Hatay and Antakya to see first hand the upsetting reality of the devastating earthquakes and how those who remained are coping to rebuild lives that were changed forever.

Please show that Hatay has not been forgotten by making a donation to the non-profit organisation Buradayız Hatay featured in the video.

]]> Köyceğiz is a small town that perches at the northern end of a large lake, Köyceğiz Gölü, which meets the Mediterranean Sea via the Dalyan river. The main attraction here is the lake itself – brand, beautiful and serene.

Except for its small (but growing) tourist trade, Köyceğiz is a farming town producing citrus fruit, olives and honey. This region is also famous for its Oriental sweetgum (liquidambar) trees, the source of the precious petrified amber gum.

The ski season starts around the 15th of December and lasts until the 1st of March with snow thickness varying between 50 and 250 cm on average.

Lift passes and ski hire are so cheap compared to resorts around the Alps, yet the facilities are similar.

]]> Ayvalık is a seaside town on the northwestern Aegean coast of Türkiye. The town centre is connected to Cunda Island by a causeway and is surrounded by the archipelago of Ayvalık Islands, which face the nearby Greek island of Lesbos.

On first glance, Ayvalık may seem unremarkable, a port town similar to many others in this region. But wander a few streets back from the waterfront and you’ll discover an old Greek village in spirited abandon.

Colourful shuttered doors conceal boutique hotels in restored stone houses, mosques converted from Greek Orthodox churches welcome the faithful to prayer and historic cafes full of locals line hidden squares. Put simply, it’s got Aegean ambience in spades.

]]> Çanakkale occupies the narrowest point of the straits called the Dardanelles, which are 1,200m wide at this point. In 450 BC, the Persian King Xerxes built a bridge of boats here to land his troops in Thrace, and the final battles of the Peloponnesian War took place in these waters around 400 BC.

Today, ferry services link Çanakkale with Kilitbahir and Eceabat on the other side making it the most convenient base for tours of the Gallipoli battlefields across the straits.

The town has an attractive harbour, a naval museum and a colossal wooden horse that stands on the town’s waterfront.

Çanakkale means ‘pottery castle’ and the town was once a centre for the production of high-quality kaolin for a flourishing ceramics industry.

Mick and Trudie paid a visit to have a look at what the city of Çanakkale has to offer, including the popular streets, museums, ferry boats, the worlds longest bridge, the most visited war memorials, including ANZAC cove, the town of Gallipoli and the famous ruins of Troy.

]]> According to Wikipedia, there is an estimated 500,000 people of Turkish origin living in the United Kingdom. The Turkish community is not evenly distributed across the country and the concentration of the Turks is almost all in Greater London. The Turks have created Turkish neighbourhoods mostly in North and North-East London however there are also Turkish communities in South London and the City of Westminster.

Many of the Turkish community pursue self-employment opportunities and there are clearly identifiable Turkish areas with streets lined with restaurants, kebab shops, cafes, food stores, barbers and various other trades.
