Orange Code Warning Followed by Flooding in Ula’s Gökçe Neighbourhood

Ula, MUĞLA – Heavy rainfall affecting Muğla province brought daily life to a standstill in the Ula district. Following a meteorological “orange code” warning, intense rain caused a stream to overflow in the Gökçe neighborhood.

The stream, which runs through the neighborhood, quickly exceeded its capacity due to the high volume of water flowing from higher elevations. As a result, water spilled over its banks and flooded surrounding areas, causing disruptions to transportation and daily activities.

Local authorities and emergency teams were dispatched to the area to monitor the situation and take necessary precautions. Residents were warned to remain cautious, especially in low-lying areas, and to avoid approaching stream beds during periods of heavy rainfall.

Turkey’s Weaving Heritage Showcased at Council of Europe Exhibition

Strasbourg, FRANCE – Turkey’s rich tradition of regional weaving is being showcased in Europe as the “Turkey Weaving Atlas – Memory of Fabric” exhibition opens at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg from Jan. 26 to 30.

The exhibition brings together Turkey’s diverse weaving heritage for the first time in a single international showcase, highlighting centuries of craftsmanship and cultural memory rooted in traditional textile production.

Organised under the auspices of Turkish first lady Emine Erdogan, the exhibition is hosted by the Turkish Delegation during the winter session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

The display features centuries-old weaving knowledge from all seven regions of Turkey, offering visitors insight into the historical, social and aesthetic dimensions of traditional fabrics. All textiles on display are produced using natural fibres and locally sourced materials through environmentally respectful methods, with traditional weaving recognised as a zero-waste practice free from industrial processes.

The works presented highlight weaving as a vessel of memory, identity and culture, while also reflecting the Council of Europe’s commitment to cultural heritage preservation, rural development and sustainable craftsmanship.

The exhibition aligns with recent PACE reports on cultural heritage and sustainability prepared by Turkish Delegation member Zeynep Yildiz, which emphasise the importance of traditional production methods and sustainable heritage practices.

Yildiz said the “Turkey Weaving Atlas” project, led under Emine Erdogan’s guidance, represents a milestone in preserving traditional textiles. She noted that ongoing efforts in rural Ankara aim to revive the historic Ankara sof fabric through local weaving workshops.

As a member of the PACE Culture Committee, Yildiz added that her forthcoming report on preserving Europe’s rural culture highlights how traditional lifestyles contribute to sustainability. She also thanked Emine Erdogan and women across Turkey, whose skills and dedication are reflected in every piece exhibited.

Memorial Held for 78 Victims of Kartalkaya Hotel Fire as Families Gather on First Anniversary of Tragedy

Bolu, TURKEY – A memorial ceremony was held late Tuesday night at the Grand Kartal Hotel in the Kartalkaya Ski Resort to mark the first anniversary of the devastating fire that claimed the lives of 78 people.

Families of the victims and members of the public gathered in front of the hotel at 3:17 a.m., the exact time the fire broke out one year ago. Photographs of the victims were placed at the scene as mourners laid carnations, lit candles and released wish balloons into the sky. The names of those who lost their lives and angel figures were projected onto the hotel’s facade using laser lights.

Emotional scenes were witnessed as family members embraced one another, many in tears.

During the ceremony, families stated that the tragedy was the result of organized wrongdoing, mistakes and negligence, which turned a fire that could have been easily controlled into one of the world’s deadliest hotel disasters.

They emphasized that although the pain has deepened over time, their hope for justice remains strong. It was noted that the verdict issued by the Bolu 1st High Criminal Court after nearly a year of legal proceedings met public expectations and could serve as an important precedent.

Families said they have lived with constant grief for 365 days, remembering and praying for their loved ones every day. They stressed that many of the victims lost their lives while trying to help others escape the fire.

Participants also underlined that, despite the tragedy, they continue to stand together in solidarity and will not abandon their pursuit of justice, hoping that similar disasters can be prevented in the future.

Bandırma Ferry to Be Moved to Atatürk’s Landing Site in Samsun

Samsun, TURKEY – The Bandırma Ferry, one of the most powerful symbols of the founding journey of the Republic of Turkey, is set to be transported over land and turned into the centerpiece of a large open-air museum in the northern province of Samsun, officials have announced.

Under the project, the historic vessel that carried Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his comrades to Samsun on May 19, 1919, will be relocated to Tütün Pier — the exact site where Atatürk first set foot on Anatolian soil. This moment is widely regarded as the starting point of the Turkish War of Independence.

The relocation is expected to be completed by May 19, coinciding with the anniversary of this landmark event.

Samsun Mayor Halit Doğan stated that work is continuing on the Open-Air Independence Square Museum Project, which aims to reflect Samsun’s unique role in Turkish history. He noted that detailed planning has already been carried out for the overland transfer of the ferry, including route assessments and logistical arrangements.

Currently located in Doğupark, the Bandırma Ferry operates as a museum ship and attracts around 500,000 visitors each year. However, Doğan emphasized that many visitors leave without spending time in the city center. He said the project aims to turn the city center back into a focal point and reconnect this historic symbol with its original setting.

Following the relocation, the surrounding area will be developed into a 60-decare open-air museum.

Atatürk’s arrival in Samsun marked a decisive turning point, ending the period of paralysis under occupation and igniting a nationwide resistance movement that eventually led to the establishment of the republic in 1923. The journey laid the strategic foundation for unifying political leadership and transforming scattered resistance into a coordinated national struggle.

The Bandırma Ferry, a modest steamship of its era, has since become an enduring symbol of determination, sovereignty and national rebirth.

Nearly 900-Year-Old Madrasa Discovered During Urban Renewal in Kayseri

Kayseri, TURKEY – The remains of a madrasa believed to be nearly 900 years old were discovered in the central Anatolian city of Kayseri during an urban renewal project, local officials said.

The discovery was made near the Melik Mehmed Gazi Tomb, just south of the historic Kebir Mosque, during works carried out as part of the Surici Camikebir Urban Renewal Project. Traces and wall remains of the Islamic school were identified during excavation and ground works in the area.

Kayseri Mayor Memduh Büyükkılıç said the city had hosted many civilisations throughout history and held a significant place in Islamic heritage. He noted that careful and meaningful work was being carried out around the Kebir Mosque area.

“While opening up the surroundings of Cami Kebir, we encountered a surprise,” Büyükkılıç said. “Right next to the tomb of Melik Mehmed Gazi, we uncovered traces and walls of a madrasa built in the tradition of a religious complex.”

Melik Mehmed Gazi, a ruler of the Danishmend dynasty, is regarded as one of the founders of Kayseri and a key figure in early Turkish-Islamic history in Anatolia. The mosque he commissioned remains one of the city’s most important historical landmarks.

Mayor Büyükkılıç stated that excavation and restoration works would be carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, in line with existing academic research and historical records.

Experts Warn Turkey Is Approaching Water-Poverty Threshold

Istanbul, TURKEY – Istanbul recorded the highest annual water consumption in its history in 2025, as climate pressures, rapid urban growth and structural supply vulnerabilities combined to push Turkey closer to internationally defined water-poverty conditions.

According to data from the Istanbul Water and Sewage Administration (ISKI), the city consumed 1.17 billion cubic meters of water in 2025, the highest figure ever recorded. The volume was nearly five times the capacity of the Ömerli Dam, Istanbul’s largest reservoir. During the year, water services were provided to more than 7 million subscribers.

Of total consumption, 767.7 million cubic meters were used on the European side and 405.7 million cubic meters on the Asian side. Water supply was sourced primarily from the Melen system, dams, Yeşilçay, streams in the Istranca region and underground wells. The highest daily usage was recorded on July 24 at 3.8 million cubic meters, while the lowest occurred on March 31.

Reservoir levels fluctuated significantly, falling to 17.12% in December and rising to 82.36% in April. Annual rainfall over reservoir basins measured 619.95 millimeters.

Academics from Istanbul Technical University warned that Turkey was entering a structurally fragile water era. Professor Mikdat Kadıoğlu said uncontrolled urban growth posed a greater long-term risk than drought alone, noting that scientific indicators showed Turkey was nearing “water-poor country” status, defined as less than 1,000 cubic meters of usable water per person annually.

Kadıoğlu described Istanbul as exceeding its sustainable population capacity and stressed that dam levels offered only temporary relief. He warned that without integrated planning covering population growth, zoning and water governance, urban vulnerability would intensify.

ITU researchers proposed a seven-point water management model, including early-warning meteorological systems, water-year budgeting, mandatory drought plans, population planning based on water capacity, rainwater harvesting, separation of drinking and utility water, and rejection of unscientific solutions.

Kadıoğlu warned that failing to act before scarcity deepened could lead to severe economic, social and public health consequences, stressing that effective water management was essential to sustaining urban life.

Fethiye–Ölüdeniz Route Undergoing Complete Renovation

Fethiye, MUĞLA – Muğla Metropolitan Municipality is continuing comprehensive road, infrastructure and landscaping works on the Fethiye–Ölüdeniz route, with a total investment of 328 million TL. The works are progressing intensively on the 2nd stage, Ovacık–City Center route, while other phases of the project have already been completed.

As part of the large-scale transformation in the Fethiye–Ölüdeniz region, asphalt works have been completed on the 1st stage Patlangıç–Ovacık, 3rd stage Hisarönü–Ölüdeniz, and 4th stage Ölüdeniz–Kayaköy roads. Construction activities continue at full pace on the 2nd stage Ovacık–City Center section.

The overall project includes the laying of 11,000 meters of hot asphalt, 4,200 meters of drinking water lines, 7,000 meters of rainwater drainage lines, and the construction of 4,500 meters of steel guardrails, aiming to significantly improve traffic safety and infrastructure durability.

The 2nd phase, Ovacık–City Center, covers extensive infrastructure and superstructure works, including 7,000 meters of rainwater lines, sidewalk improvements, 3,500 meters of hot asphalt paving, retaining wall construction, roundabout upgrades, and the installation of 500 meters of guardrails.

In the 1st phase, Patlangıç–Ovacık, works included 2,500 meters of PMT pavement material, bituminous base and binder layers, 2,100 meters of guardrails, and 300 meters of curbstone, with an average road width of 15 meters.

The 3rd phase, Hisarönü–Ölüdeniz, saw the completion of 2,650 meters of asphalt concrete and PMT paving, 1,173 meters of guardrails, 2,200 meters of drinking water lines, 2,730 meters of curbs, 1,865 square meters of paving stones, and 2,550 meters of concrete-lined ditches. Additionally, 3,000 meters of motor-friendly barriers were installed across the 1st and 3rd phases.

In the 4th phase, Ölüdeniz–Kayaköy, a 2,000-meter 200 mm ductile iron drinking water line, 2,500 meters of hot asphalt paving, sidewalks, and rainwater drainage lines were completed. Installation of 1,000 meters of guardrails and ditch concrete lining is still ongoing.

President of the Coastal Aegean Municipalities Union and Mayor of Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Ahmet Aras stated that the project is a key part of preparing Muğla for the future.

“Our priority is to create safe, comfortable and sustainable transportation infrastructure. The Fethiye–Ölüdeniz road is one of the busiest routes in our city, both for tourism and daily life. For this reason, we have approached it as a holistic transformation project that improves quality of life,” Aras said.

Emphasising the long-term benefits of the investment, Aras noted that roads, drinking water, rainwater drainage and environmental arrangements were planned together to ensure trouble-free service for many years.

Referring to road investments across Muğla, Mayor Aras added, “In 2025, with an investment of 2 billion 86 million TL, we completed 236,800 meters of new roads and maintenance and repair works on 440,000 meters of existing roads. In 2026, we plan to carry out road works exceeding 521,000 meters with a budget of 4 billion 150 million TL.”

The project is expected to significantly ease transportation, enhance safety and contribute to sustainable urban development in Fethiye and the wider Ölüdeniz region.

Heavy Rainfall Changes the Colour of Ölüdeniz

Fethiye, MUĞLA – Heavy rainfall in Fethiye has caused a visible change in the colour of the sea at Ölüdeniz, as muddy water flowing from the surrounding mountains mixed with seawater, turning it brown in some areas.

The intense rainfall also led to strong winds and waves reaching approximately 3 metres, particularly along Belcekız Beach. The high waves caused damage to several beachfront businesses, while construction machinery was brought in to help reduce the impact of the waves and protect the shoreline.

Despite the hazardous conditions, many citizens came to the beach to watch the powerful waves, capturing the dramatic scenes on their mobile phones.

Authorities have warned that heavy rainfall is expected to continue in the region, urging residents and business owners to remain cautious, especially in coastal and low-lying areas.

A favourite destination for nature lovers throughout the year, Saklıkent Canyon continued its strong performance in attracting visitors, as it has in previous years. With its cool canyon route, striking rock formations, walking trails and surrounding natural beauty, the area appeals to visitors of all ages while making a significant contribution to the local economy.

Sea Turtle Conservation Efforts Bear Fruit at İztuzu Beach

Ortaca, MUĞLA – Conservation efforts at İztuzu Beach, one of the world’s most important sea turtle nesting sites in Muğla’s Ortaca district, have produced encouraging results in 2025, according to the Sea Turtle Research, Rescue and Rehabilitation Center (DEKAMER).

Comprehensive protection and rehabilitation activities led to a marked increase in reproductive success and a decline in nest predation rates. Scientific monitoring revealed a steady upward trend in the total number of eggs laid, while fewer nests were targeted by predators, highlighting the effectiveness of sustained conservation practices.

In 2025, injured sea turtles admitted to DEKAMER were successfully treated and returned to the wild, with a rehabilitation success rate of 59.4 percent. Most injuries were linked to human activities such as fishing gear entanglement and boat strikes.

Outreach and education programs reached more than 5,000 people, including students, public officials, and business representatives, while the center welcomed over 50,000 visitors during the year.

A total of 17 rehabilitated turtles were released back into the sea, three of which were fitted with satellite tracking devices to support global research into turtle migration, distribution, and behavior.

DEKAMER officials highlighted that continued monitoring, protection, and public engagement remain critical to ensuring the long-term survival of sea turtles in the region.

Turkey Moves to Set 15 as Minimum Age for Social Media

Officials describe social media as a national security concern, citing risks such as harmful content, digital addiction, and financial exploitation, particularly among minors. The government plans to integrate digital literacy training into schools and require global tech companies to comply with the same regulatory standards as in Europe and the U.S.

The draft bill is expected to be submitted to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) after final technical and inter-ministerial consultations.

Fethiye and Bodrum Top List for Illegal Buildings in Muğla

Fethiye, MUĞLA – The fight against illegal construction continues across Muğla, with recent inspections revealing that Fethiye and Bodrum have the highest number of unlicensed and illegal structures in the province.

According to studies carried out by the Muğla Provincial Directorate of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Fethiye ranks first with more than 7,000 illegal buildings. Bodrum follows with 6,112 illegal structures, of which 503 have already been demolished, while demolition orders have been issued for 5,609 others. Authorities stated that demolitions are being implemented gradually as legal processes are completed.

In Bodrum alone, intensified inspections in 2025 led to the detection of 680 new illegal buildings. Administrative procedures, including fines and demolition processes, have been initiated in line with current legislation. Most of the newly identified illegal structures were found in agricultural areas, protected sites and coastal zones, and numerous illegally built piers were also demolished.

Muğla Governor İdris Akbıyık announced that inspections will be further increased ahead of the summer season, particularly during the tourism period. He emphasised that there will be zero tolerance for illegal construction and that all demolition decisions taken across Muğla will be fully implemented through coordinated efforts involving provincial authorities, district municipalities and law enforcement units.

Fethiye Municipality stated that it continues to fulfil its legal responsibilities in combating illegal and unlicensed construction in accordance with Law No. 3194 on Zoning. Municipal teams carry out field inspections, issue building suspension orders, and initiate demolition decisions through the municipal council when violations are not resolved within the legal timeframe. Demolition operations are carried out with all necessary safety measures, and when required, support is provided by Muğla Metropolitan Municipality in terms of machinery and technical equipment.

Municipal officials underlined that combating illegal construction is not only a legal obligation but also crucial for protecting the natural environment, safeguarding public interest and ensuring planned and sustainable urban development.

Muğla Expands Fleet to Combat Marine Pollution

Muğla – Muğla Metropolitan Municipality is increasing its waste collection capacity at sea by expanding its fleet as part of ongoing efforts to combat marine pollution.

Within this scope, five new waste collection boats are being added to the eight vessels currently operating in the Gulf of Gökova, Göcek and Dalaman bays. With the expanded fleet, the municipality aims to significantly increase its capacity to collect waste from the sea and strengthen environmental protection efforts.

As one of Turkey’s leading tourism destinations, Muğla continues its work without interruption to protect its seas. Waste collection boats are used to prevent environmental pollution caused by marine vessels, particularly in bays with heavy boat traffic, with a strong focus on protecting the marine ecosystem.

The waste collection boats operated by Muğla Metropolitan Municipality collect waste oil, bilge water, sewage and solid waste from boats, contributing to cleaner seas. The ongoing work in the Gulf of Gökova, Göcek and Dalaman bays both preserves marine cleanliness and supports the sustainability of natural life.

54-Year-Old Note from Italian Climbers Found in Kaçkar Mountains

Rize, TURKEY – Mountaineers climbing the Kaçkar Mountains in Turkey’s Black Sea region have uncovered a 54-year-old note left by Italian climbers during a 1972 expedition.

The discovery was made about a month and a half ago by CAMADAN Mountaineering and Winter Sports Specialized Club members, including President Metin Çolak, Hakan Demirci, Adem Şahin, Musa Kesimal and Ercüment Gümüş, while ascending the isolated 3,428-meter Atalani peak. Inside a summit cairn—a chimney-shaped structure used by climbers to mark their presence—they found an upside-down tin can weighted with stones containing a piece of paper wrapped in plastic. The note read: “20-8-72, Spedizione CAI Pordenone Italy, Quota 3510, Enzo Laconca, Giovanni Martin.”

Research by the team revealed that the note belonged to members of the Italian Club Alpino Italiano: Alleris Pizzur, Sisto Degan, Enzo Laconca, Gianni Martin and Ezio Migotto, who visited the region 54 years ago. After contacting the club via social media, the Turkish mountaineers established communication with the original climbers and shared photographs and details of the discovery.

Colak described the find as a surreal experience, saying, “It was as if the sense of time disappeared at that moment. It felt like they were there just before us. Yet none of the five of us who reached the summit that day were alive when this note was left there. It’s incredible.”

The Italian club plans to preserve the tin can and note and display them in a proposed mountaineering museum in Turkeys eastern Black Sea region. Officials have also expressed interest in attending the museum’s opening and connecting with mountaineers from that era.

The Kaçkar Mountains, known for their challenging and isolated peaks, continue to attract climbers from around the world, with historical ascents dating back decades, including a Czechoslovak expedition in 1969.

Istanbul Launches Cleanup After Deadly Storm

Istanbul, TURKEY – Authorities in Istanbul launched a large-scale recovery operation on Jan. 9 after a violent storm swept through the Marmara and Aegean regions, killing three people and leaving extensive damage to the city’s infrastructure, historic monuments, and residential areas.

Powerful lodos winds, following days of meteorological warnings, struck Istanbul on Jan. 8, toppling trees, tearing off rooftops, and forcing the suspension of sea and air traffic. According to the Istanbul Governor’s Office, by early evening the storm had triggered 350 emergency reports, including 45 fallen trees, 89 damaged roofs, the collapse of an abandoned building, and one retaining wall.

Among the most symbolic incidents, the “alem,” the crescent-shaped finial atop the Mimar Sinan minaret of Hagia Sophia, was blown off and fell into the mosque’s courtyard. Turkey’s General Directorate of Foundations said the area was secured, and specialist teams will begin restoration once conditions allow. A falling tree also struck the Hagia Sophia complex during the storm.

The storm caused widespread disruption across the city. Trees collapsed onto vehicles, including four cars crushed along the Bakırköy coastal road, prompting a temporary closure. In Bahçelievler, one person was injured when a tree was blown over. In Avcılar and Kağıthane, roofs were torn from buildings, damaging nearby shops and cafes.

Maritime traffic was heavily affected, with boats capsizing or colliding with rocks along the coast, and ferry services suspended. The Bosphorus was briefly closed to ship traffic before reopening later in the evening. On the city’s outskirts, two trucks were overturned on the northern Marmara motorway, and in Sarıyer’s Kireçburnu, a historic lighthouse collapsed into the sea. Waves at Yenikapı flooded the shoreline, temporarily merging sea and land.

Air travel was disrupted, with dozens of flights canceled at Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen Airport.

Beyond Istanbul, the storm proved deadly in other parts of Turkey. In the western city of Aydın, a 30-year-old worker was swept into the sea while working on a pier and lost his life.

Cleanup and repair operations are ongoing, with authorities prioritizing the restoration of infrastructure, historic sites, and the safety of residents affected by the storm.

Tuesday Market in Fethiye Postponed Due to Fethiyespor–Galatasaray Match

Fethiye, MUĞLA – The Tuesday Market, traditionally held every week in Fethiye, will be set up on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, due to the Fethiyespor–Galatasaray match scheduled to be played on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.

The change was made because the match will take place at Fethiye District Stadium, and officials decided to postpone the market for one day in order to avoid traffic congestion and ensure public safety. Heavy Snowfall Cuts Off Access to 157 Villages in Eastern Turkey

Van, TURKEY – Heavy snowfall and blizzard conditions disrupted daily life across eastern Turkey on Monday, cutting off access to 157 villages in the provinces of Van, Hakkari and Bitlis, while teams worked intensively to reopen roads and restore essential services.

According to authorities, 88 village roads in Van were closed due to snow and strong winds. Metropolitan Municipality teams carried out snow-clearing operations throughout the day, while repair work was completed at a pumping station in the Çatak district that had been damaged by an avalanche, restoring drinking water services to the area.

In Hakkari, snow depth in higher elevations reached nearly 2 metres, prompting residents to clear rooftops as municipal and highway crews worked to reopen roads. Of the 89 village roads closed, 64 were reopened, with efforts continuing on the remaining routes. Road-widening work was also carried out on the access road to the Mergabütan Ski Center.

Snowfall and freezing temperatures also affected Muş, where all 368 village roads closed due to snow were reopened. Crews continued road-widening operations and remained on standby for emergencies. Snow-clearing work also continued on the Muş–Mutki road connecting Muş with Bitlis, where progress was slowed by deep snow and blizzard conditions.

In Bitlis, snowfall disrupted transportation in the city center. Officials reported that 44 village roads remained closed, while municipal and provincial teams continued snow removal operations, particularly around schools.

Authorities said snow-clearing efforts would continue across the region to ensure safe transportation and restore access to affected settlements as soon as possible.

Researchers in Isparta Develop Cold-Resistant Apples to Protect Yields

Isparta, TURKEY – Researchers in the western province of Isparta, widely regarded as Turkey’s apple-growing heartland, are developing new domestic apple varieties to reduce crop losses caused by agricultural frost.

Although Isparta ranks first nationwide in apple production, increasingly frequent late spring frosts have become a serious threat to yields, particularly in inland regions. To address this risk, the Eğirdir Fruit Research Institute, operating under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, has been carrying out long-term breeding programs focused on late-blooming, cold-resistant apple varieties.

The project aims to minimize frost damage by delaying the flowering period, when apple trees are most vulnerable to sudden drops in temperature. As part of the work, hundreds of apple genotypes derived from both local and international genetic resources have been monitored under field conditions for many years.

The institute maintains a genetic pool of nearly 400 domestic and foreign apple varieties, from which late-blooming types have been selected for controlled cross-breeding. Studies to identify, test and officially register new varieties are ongoing.

Agricultural engineer Turgay Seymen said the research has been underway for nine years. He noted that through controlled hybridization, researchers have developed genotypes that bloom two to three weeks later than standard varieties. Of these, 10 to 15 promising genotypes have advanced to the next stage and are expected to enter yield trials starting next year.

Seymen emphasized that despite having higher chilling requirements, the new genotypes do not cause delays in harvest time, which typically begins in early October. He added that the varieties are primarily intended for inland and transitional regions, which account for about 70 percent of Turkey’s apple production.

The project ultimately aims to reduce frost-related yield losses by 10 to 20 percent, helping safeguard apple production against the growing impacts of climate variability.

Climate Change, Pollution and Invasive Species to Dominate Turkey’s Marine Agenda in 2026

Ankara, TURKEY – Climate change, marine pollution, invasive species and the expansion of national monitoring systems were identified as the main priorities for Turkey’s marine science agenda in 2026, following extensive research activities carried out across the country’s seas in 2025, scientists and institute leaders said.

Experts stated that the Sea of Marmara, the Turkish Straits and the Black Sea would remain at the center of scientific focus, with increased emphasis on marine climate monitoring, protection of critical habitats and the integration of scientific data into policy-making processes, particularly ahead of the COP31 climate summit.

The Turkish Marine Research Foundation (TÜDAV) reported that 2025 was a productive year, marked by research cruises, new publications, workshops and international cooperation projects, including coral protection studies. TÜDAV officials stressed that research on mucilage, seagrass meadows, corals and invasive species would continue, while calls for marine protected areas in the Black Sea would be strengthened.

Scientists warned that warming seas are accelerating the spread of invasive species, posing serious risks to marine ecosystems, particularly in the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. Research institutions highlighted that more than 100 invasive species have already been identified in the Sea of Marmara alone.

University-based marine institutes reported significant progress in 2025 in climate impact assessment, pollution monitoring, numerical modeling and international data sharing through platforms such as the IPCC and IPBES. Long-term datasets on temperature, oxygen levels, pollutants and mucilage were expanded, while Turkey’s visibility in global marine science initiatives increased.

For 2026, institutions announced plans to establish a National Marine Climate Monitoring Platform, position the Sea of Marmara as a pilot area for climate and pollution interaction studies, expand offshore research, develop early-warning systems using smart sensors, and strengthen international cooperation in areas such as digital twin technologies, marine spatial planning and climate adaptation.

Scientists emphasized that these efforts aim to enhance Turkey’s resilience to climate change, protect marine biodiversity and ensure the sustainable use of seas through science-based decision-making.

Heavy Snow and Freezing Temperatures Grip Turkey as 2026 Begins

Ankara, TURKEY – Much of Turkey was gripped by severely cold weather and widespread snowfall on Thursday as the country welcomed 2026, with winter conditions disrupting daily life across large swathes of the nation.

Snowfall affected at least 63 cities, including Ankara and Istanbul, though precipitation was limited to certain districts in the two major metropolitan areas. Authorities issued weather warnings for 31 provinces, cautioning residents about heavy precipitation and dangerous road conditions.

The provinces under alert included Adana, Ağrı, Artvin, Bingöl, Bitlis, Elazığ, Erzincan, Erzurum, Giresun, Gümüşhane, Hakkari, Hatay, Kars, Kocaeli, Malatya, Kahramanmaraş, Mardin, Muş, Rize, Sakarya, Siirt, Trabzon, Tunceli, Van, Zonguldak, Batman, Şırnak, Bartın, Ardahan, Osmaniye and Düzce.

Although schools were already closed on Thursday due to the New Year holiday, authorities extended closures to Friday in several cities as snowfall intensified.

In Istanbul, snowfall was particularly intense during the morning hours, easing later in the afternoon, though cold temperatures persisted. Authorities urged motorists nationwide to exercise caution as winter conditions continue.

Avalanches Hit Eastern Turkey as Severe Winter Weather Tightens Grip

Ankara, TURKEY – A wave of severe winter weather across Turkey has triggered deadly avalanches, widespread evacuations and transport disruptions as authorities warned of continued risks in the first days of the new year.

In the eastern province of Van, two avalanches struck residential areas in the Çatak district on January 1. The first avalanche hit a neighbourhood, causing serious damage to several homes but no injuries. As a precaution, authorities evacuated 22 houses, relocating residents to school dormitories amid fears of further slides.

A second avalanche later struck another neighbourhood in the same district, leaving one person injured and another reported missing under the snow, according to local media. Search and rescue teams were immediately dispatched and operations continued under harsh weather conditions. Officials said 105 settlements in the district had already been cut off due to heavy snowfall.

A similar tragedy unfolded in the Black Sea province of Artvin on December 31, when an avalanche hit a plateau at an altitude of about 2,300 metres, sweeping away three shepherds and their livestock. Authorities confirmed that one shepherd was found dead, while search efforts continue for two others, including one Afghan national.

Turkey is experiencing a prolonged spell of extreme winter weather, with freezing temperatures, strong winds and high avalanche risk, according to the Turkish State Meteorological Service. High-altitude areas of Eastern Anatolia and the Eastern Black Sea region remain under serious avalanche warnings, and residents have been urged to avoid dangerous slopes and follow official advisories.

While heavy snowfall has begun to ease in western and central regions, a deep freeze continues to grip central and eastern Turkey. Central Anatolia is among the hardest hit, with night-time temperatures forecast to drop to minus 18 degrees Celsius. Further snowfall is expected along the Black Sea coast and in eastern provinces such as Erzurum, Kars and Siirt, increasing avalanche risks across mountainous terrain.

Stormy weather is also forecast from the Marmara region to Eastern Anatolia, compounding hazardous road conditions. As snow and ice disrupted daily life, education was suspended in many provinces, including districts of Istanbul, as well as Bolu, Sinop, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaraş, Ağrı, Kars and Hakkari.

Meteorologists said the intense cold is expected to continue through the weekend, particularly in eastern Turkey, while rain is forecast to return to western regions early next week. Istanbul and İzmir are expected to see highs of around 9 degrees Celsius, while Ankara is bracing for bitter conditions, with temperatures falling to minus 12 degrees at night and reaching only 2 degrees during the day.

Babadağ Summit in Fethiye Blanketed by Snow

Fethiye, MUĞLA – The summit of Babadağ, overlooking the Fethiye district of Muğla, was covered in snow following a shift in weather conditions in the region.

Rainfall that affected the area earlier turned into snow on Babadağ, which rises to 1,965 metres and is located above the Ölüdeniz neighbourhood. A white blanket formed across the summit of the mountain, which is home to one of Turkey’s most famous paragliding centres.

The snow-covered peak, situated approximately 30 kilometres from Fethiye town centre, was clearly visible from the city, drawing the attention of residents. Many locals shared photos and videos of the wintry scene on social media.

Authorities warned drivers to exercise caution on the Babadağ mountain road, citing the risk of icy conditions and potential accidents as cold weather continues to affect higher elevations.

LED-Lighted Tractor Draws New Year Attention in Muğla

Yatağan, MUĞLA – A tractor decorated with LED lights for the New Year attracted widespread attention in the Yatağan district of Muğla, becoming an unusual sight for local residents.

Car modification enthusiasts in the district adorned a tractor—considered an icon of the region—with approximately 100 metres of LED lighting. Instead of being driven on public roads, the illuminated tractor was paraded through the town centre on a tow truck, ensuring safety and compliance with traffic regulations.

Dr. Erdem Çetinkaya, who organised the display, said special care was taken to fully obey traffic rules, and the tractor was deliberately kept off public roads to prevent any potential accidents.

The brightly lit tractor, touring the streets on the tow truck, sparked curiosity and interest among citizens, many of whom stopped to watch and take photos of the eye-catching New Year display.

Paragliding Flights Rise by 2% in 2025, Led by Strong Chinese Tourist Interest

Fethiye, MUĞLA – Babadağ in Fethiye, one of the world’s leading paragliding destinations, achieved another flight record in 2025, with the total number of flights increasing by 2% compared to the previous year.

According to official figures, a total of 194,996 paragliding flights were carried out from Babadağ to Ölüdeniz in 2025. Of these, 134,684 were tandem (two-person) flights, while 60,312 were single (one-person) flights, highlighting continued strong demand for both commercial and individual paragliding experiences.

The data also showed that Chinese tourists ranked first among foreign visitors in terms of flight numbers, a development attributed to strengthened tourism ties between Fethiye and China. In 2025, flights included 30,231 Chinese, 25,704 British, 25,262 Russian, 7,954 German, 2,377 French, 2,002 South Korean, 1,264 Polish, and 1,124 Ukrainian tourists. In addition, 65,371 domestic tourists from Turkey experienced tandem paragliding from Babadağ.

Osman Çıralı, President of the Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the figures reflect sustained growth in paragliding tourism. “A total of 194,996 flights were made in 2025, representing a 2% increase compared to last year. We also saw a 10% rise in commercial tandem flights,” he said, adding that 398 commercial tandem pilots affiliated with 50 travel agencies operated throughout the year.

Çıralı noted that strict inspections were carried out to maintain safety standards. As a result, 35 pilots were penalised for regulatory violations, with suspensions ranging from three days to two years. In addition, 17 travel agencies faced fines, temporary suspensions of 10 to 30 days, and, in some cases, revocation of tourism business licences.

Expressing optimism for the year ahead, Çıralı said promotional efforts, particularly in China, were continuing. “We are hopeful for 2026 and expect flight numbers to increase further,” he said, underlining Babadağ’s growing contribution to Turkey’s adventure tourism sector.

Countdown Begins for Datça’s Winter Swimming Marathon

Datça, MUĞLA – Preparations are under way in Datça for one of Turkey’s longest-running open sea winter swimming events, with the Datça Open Sea Winter Swimming Marathon set to take place for the 20th time on Saturday, January 17, 2026.

Around 500 athletes are expected to compete in the marathon, swimming 1,500 metres or 5,000 metres along courses designed to follow Datça’s natural coastline. The routes have been carefully planned with wind and sea currents in mind, offering a demanding yet safe challenge in Datça’s famously clear winter waters.

Located at the meeting point of the Aegean and Mediterranean seas, Datça is considered one of the most suitable regions in Turkey for winter swimming thanks to its mild microclimate. Sea temperatures in January typically range between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius, while sheltered bays and high salinity further enhance swimming conditions.

The marathon is notable for its wide age range, with categories open to athletes aged 14 to 85 and over, highlighting the event’s inclusive spirit and its message that sport can be enjoyed at any age.

First held in 2007, the Datça Open Sea Winter Swimming Marathon has grown into a local tradition, reflecting the district’s close relationship with nature. Hosted by Datça Municipality and organised by the Datça Sports Club with volunteer support, the non-commercial event attracts participants from across Turkey and abroad and is expected to provide a boost to winter sports tourism in the district.

Turkey Records Over 53,000 Earthquakes in 2025, Second Most Active Year on Record

Ankara, TURKEY – Turkey recorded 53,262 earthquakes in 2025, making it the country’s second most seismically active year since the devastating Feb. 6, 2023, Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes, according to a leading disaster management expert.

Associate Professor Bülent Özmen of Gazi University’s Faculty of Engineering said the figures highlight Turkey’s ongoing and elevated earthquake risk, with the country experiencing an average of six earthquakes per hour and 146 per day.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Özmen said 437 earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 and above were recorded during the year, including 412 between 4.0 and 5.0, 20 between 5.0 and 6.0, and five between 6.0 and 6.9. This means Turkey experienced, on average, one magnitude 4 earthquake per day, a magnitude 5 or stronger quake every 15 days, and a magnitude 6 or stronger quake roughly every 73 days.

Balıkesir ranked as the province with the highest number of earthquakes in 2025, driven largely by intense seismic activity in the Sındırgı district. Other highly active provinces included Kütahya, Muğla, Malatya, and Kahramanmaraş.

The year’s strongest earthquake was a magnitude 6.2 quake off the coast of Silivri near Istanbul on April 23, once again underscoring the city’s vulnerability. Özmen also pointed to two magnitude 6.1 earthquakes in Sındırgı on Aug. 10 and Oct. 27, after which nearly 21,000 earthquakes were recorded in the district over about 4.5 months—an unprecedented level for a single district.

Earthquakes in 2025 caused three deaths and 594 injuries, all linked to panic rather than structural collapse, highlighting shortcomings in public preparedness. Özmen warned that earthquake-resistant construction remains insufficient, stressing that aging and vulnerable buildings can suffer serious damage even in moderate quakes.

He called for accelerated urban transformation, restrictions on development along active fault lines affecting 24 provinces and 81 districts, and improved spatial planning that accounts for risks such as liquefaction and landslides. Özmen also urged the nationwide expansion of disaster awareness training to reduce panic and improve public response during earthquakes.

The businesses, which included wedding halls, campsites, and restaurants, had previously been served eviction notices.

Municipal teams carried out the demolitions as part of an enforcement process to protect the coastal area. A total of 17 businesses were demolished during the operation. Officials reported that the demolition work, which began on December 8, was completed in line with the planned schedule.

Following the completion of the demolitions, the cleared sections of the beach were documented with aerial photographs taken by drone, showing the newly opened coastal area.

Excavation in Çalış Confirmed as Planned Road Construction

Fethiye, MUĞLA – Excavation work carried out on the hillside in the Çalış region of Fethiye, which had sparked public debate and various allegations, has been confirmed to be part of a planned road construction project.

The work, carried out with heavy machinery at the end of the winding road connecting to the ring road, attracted attention on social media, with claims suggesting different purposes. However, information obtained from Fethiye Municipality officials revealed that the excavation is being conducted for a new shortcut road in line with the approved zoning plan.

According to municipal officials, the project will connect Cahit Beğenç Boulevard and Osman Gazi Street, creating a direct route to the ring road. The new road is expected to allow vehicles to access the ring road without entering the final intersection, easing traffic congestion and improving road safety.

Officials stated that construction is continuing according to the planned schedule and that, once completed, the new route will make transportation in the region both shorter and more efficient, providing a significant contribution to local traffic flow.

Cold and Rainy Weather to Hit Turkey with Snow and Frost Warnings

Ankara – Turkey is set to come under the influence of cold and rainy weather starting last Friday, with conditions expected to intensify from the western regions and spread across much of the country, according to the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM).

Officials said precipitation will begin in western areas before becoming widespread nationwide, with rain expected to turn into rain mixed with snow and snowfall, particularly in northern, central and eastern regions. Air temperatures are forecast to fall sharply by 4 to 10 degrees Celsius, with the most significant drops in the interior and eastern parts of the country.

The cold spell is expected to continue throughout next week. Meteorologists warned of icing and frost, especially during nighttime and early morning hours, which could disrupt road, air and sea transportation. Agricultural frost is also expected to pose risks to crops in regions where farming activities continue.

Minimum temperatures between Dec. 26 and Jan. 2 are forecast to fall below zero in many cities, including Ankara, Konya, Erzurum, Sivas and Afyonkarahisar. In Istanbul, rain mixed with snow is expected to start on Saturday, mainly in higher areas, with snowfall likely to spread across elevated parts of the city by Monday.

The Marmara region will also be affected by the cold system, with temperatures expected to drop by 5 to 8 degrees Celsius and mixed precipitation turning to snow in higher elevations. Authorities urged citizens to remain cautious against icy conditions and weather-related disruptions.

Black Sea Level Rises 10–12 cm in 30 Years, Coastal Risks Increase

Istanbul – The sea level in the Black Sea has risen by around 10 to 12 centimeters over the past three decades, exposing coastal regions and roughly 160 million residents to increasing climate-related risks, according to a recent Turkish academic study.

Professor Şenol Hakan Kutoğlu of Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University analyzed satellite altimetry data from 1993 to 2020, which allows daily, high-precision measurements of sea levels. His findings show the Black Sea is rising at an annual rate of 2.5 to 3 millimeters, similar to global ocean trends.

Kutoğlu presented the study at the 16th International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology in Tokyo. He noted that global sea levels are rising by about 3 millimeters per year due to melting glaciers and ice sheets caused by climate change. If carbon emissions continue at current levels, global sea levels could increase by up to two meters by the end of the century, significantly worsening coastal erosion.

The study highlights that a one-meter rise in sea level can push seawater 50 to 100 times farther inland, depending on coastal topography. Low-lying areas along the northern Black Sea coast are particularly vulnerable, while parts of southern coastlines, including in Türkiye, also face risks from sea-level rise and storm-driven flooding.

“Low-elevation zones are present along our Black Sea coastline. Rising sea levels are expected to encroach further inland, and storm events could cause significant damage over time,” Kutoğlu said.

The study emphasizes that countries with investments along the Black Sea should reconsider coastal infrastructure plans to account for erosion and flood risks. Failure to do so could increase maintenance costs and necessitate repeated protective measures such as breakwaters.

High-risk areas identified include the Sea of Azov, parts of Russia, Romania, the Balkans, and Georgia, where large stretches of coastline could face inundation. Kutoğlu recommended that future investments be located farther inland and at higher elevations to reduce long-term economic and environmental costs.

Century-Old Weaving Tradition Showcased in Fethiye

Fethiye, MUĞLA – The Rock Carpet Kilim Exhibition, prepared in collaboration with Fethiye Municipality and the S.S. Lycia Fethiye Women’s Entrepreneurship, Production, Business and Development Cooperative, has opened its doors at the Özer Olgun Cultural Center, bringing art lovers together with the geographically protected Fethiye Rock Carpets.

The exhibition, which opened with an official ceremony, features hand-woven carpets produced using natural dyes and traditional techniques. Visitors can view examples of Fethiye Rock Carpets, which received geographical indication registration in 2021, for a period of three days.

Emerging from the cultural interaction between Turkmen communities who migrated to the region and the local population, Fethiye Rock Carpets represent a weaving tradition that became widespread in the early 19th century. These small-sized carpets are distinguished by plant motifs arranged in medallion and corner-center compositions. Produced entirely with hand-spun yarns and natural dyes, the carpets are known for their vivid and contrasting colours, most notably red and navy blue, alongside green, blue, black, white and orange.

Speaking at the opening, Fethiye Deputy Mayor Oğuz Bolelli underlined the cultural significance of the Kaya carpet. He said the exhibition aims to bring renewed attention to this geographically protected value of the region and highlighted the importance of reviving a tradition that is at risk of disappearing.

Bolelli expressed his belief that increased appreciation and demand for the exhibited works would help ensure the sustainability of production and contribute to the revival of carpet weaving in Kaya and its surrounding areas. He wished the exhibition success and strong public interest.

The Fethiye Rock Carpet Kilim Exhibition will remain open to visitors for three days at the Özer Olgun Cultural Center.

Whirling Dervishes Commemorate Rumi’s 752nd Anniversary

Konya, TURKEY – Whirling dervishes performed the centuries-old Sama ceremony on December 17, 2025, as part of the 752nd Anniversary International Commemoration Ceremonies of Sufi philosopher Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, held under the theme “Time of Peace.”

The Sama ceremony is a sacred Sufi ritual of the Mevlevi order, whose members are widely known as whirling dervishes. Through music, chanting and the distinctive whirling movement, the ritual symbolizes a spiritual journey toward divine love, harmony and inner peace.

The ceremony is closely associated with Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, a 13th-century Sufi poet, Islamic scholar and philosopher whose teachings emphasize love, tolerance and unity. Rumi spent much of his life in Konya, where he produced many of his most influential works and where his mausoleum remains a major place of pilgrimage.

Each year in early December, Konya hosts the Vuslat Anniversary International Commemoration events, marking the anniversary of Rumi’s death. In Sufi tradition, “Vuslat” does not signify death itself, but rather a union with the divine, reflecting Rumi’s belief that death is a spiritual reunion rather than an end.

The Sama ceremonies, performed before large audiences from Turkey and abroad, continue to serve as a powerful expression of Rumi’s enduring message of peace, spirituality and universal brotherhood.

Horse-Drawn Sleigh Rides Begin on Frozen Çıldır Lake

Çıldır Lake, KARS–ARDAHAN – Blanketed in snow and sealed with ice, parts of Çıldır Lake have opened to visitors eager to experience one of eastern Turkey’s most distinctive winter traditions: horse-drawn sleigh rides across a frozen lake.

Straddling the border between Kars and Ardahan provinces, Çıldır Lake covers an area of 123 square kilometres and is the second-largest lake in eastern Turkey after Lake Van. Following recent snowfall, sections of the freshwater lake have frozen to a thickness of approximately 15 centimetres, transforming the area into a striking white winter landscape.

With the ice now considered safe, the region’s iconic sleigh rides have officially marked the start of the winter season. Local operator Davut Taşdemir, who runs horse-drawn sleigh tours on the lake, said services began after completing safety checks.

Taşdemir explained that the horses were taken onto the ice to map out routes and test conditions before welcoming visitors. He noted that the lake freezes earlier than many other areas and typically allows sleigh operations for three to four months each winter.

He added that extensive preparations are carried out ahead of the season, including regular care, feeding and training of the horses once snowfall begins. Taşdemir stressed that the ice is always tested by operators themselves before guests are taken onto the lake, particularly as first-time visitors often experience a mix of excitement and apprehension.

The early arrival of winter conditions has attracted visitors from across Turkey, turning the frozen lake into a lively setting for sightseeing, photography and celebration.

Visitor Ecrin Yüksel, who travelled from Istanbul, said the trip had been planned for a long time and described her first sleigh ride on a frozen lake as unforgettable. Another visitor, Gözde Aktaş, said the experience combined both fear and enjoyment, adding that the scenery made the ride especially memorable.

Turkey Registers Thousands of Monumental Trees and Caves for Protection

Ankara, TURKEY – Turkey has officially registered 10,503 monumental trees and 319 caves across the country to ensure their protection and maintenance, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change has told state-run Anadolu Agency.

The registered sites are protected under national conservation programmes, with ongoing work aimed at preserving their cultural, historical and natural significance.

Monumental trees are classified into four main categories: dimensional, historical, folkloric and mystical. From a historical perspective, cultural monumental trees are those that have witnessed significant historical events or figures. Mystical trees are revered by local communities due to religious beliefs, while folkloric trees are associated with customs, traditions or regional events, whether joyful or tragic.

Dimensionally monumental trees are identified by their exceptional physical characteristics, including age, crown spread, trunk diameter and height, which exceed standard measurements for their species.

Once a tree is registered, rehabilitation work begins immediately. Restoration efforts include removing mistletoe, harmful fungi, ivy, dry or diseased branches, as well as foreign objects such as ropes, wires, cables and signs from the trunk and crown. Trees affected by fungal or bacterial infections are disinfected by specialists following pruning.

To prevent damage, thick and dry branches are cut in stages, with exposed surfaces treated using grafting paste to reduce the risk of decay. Artificial surfaces such as concrete, asphalt and paving stones around the root collar are carefully removed to protect the roots and trunk. The area is then refilled with soil enriched with long-term nutrients and fertilisers to support healthy root development.

Alongside tree conservation, projects are continuing nationwide to identify and protect caves as part of Turkey’s natural heritage. These efforts include both already protected caves and lesser-known sites awaiting official registration, bringing the total number of registered caves to 319.

Turkey Sets New Record in Mandarin Exports

Ankara, TURKEY – Turkey has reached a historic milestone in mandarin exports, shipping nearly $615 million worth of produce in the first 11 months of 2025, according to official export figures. The total marks a 61 percent increase compared to the same period last year and has already surpassed the previous full-year record.

Between January and November, Turkey exported 690,014 metric tons of mandarins, representing an 18 percent year-on-year rise. Export revenues climbed even faster, exceeding the former annual record of $575 million set in 2023 by approximately $39 million, despite the year not yet being complete.

Russia remained Turkey’s largest export market, importing 356,341 tons of mandarins valued at $237.08 million. Iraq followed with imports worth $203.31 million, while Ukraine ranked third at $48.35 million.

Hayrettin Uçak, chairman of an Aegean fruit exporters’ association, said producers were enjoying a strong season. He noted that Turkey’s Mediterranean and Aegean regions are key citrus-growing areas and that yields were significantly higher this year, particularly in the provinces of Adana and Mersin.

Uçak explained that although sales started slowly due to warm weather and high early-season supply, exports gained momentum as temperatures fell and demand increased. He added that competitive pricing allowed Turkish exporters to compete strongly in international markets.

He also highlighted improved quality standards, noting that no shipments had been returned due to pesticide residues, a development he described as highly beneficial for exporters.

Uçak said Turkish exporters are actively seeking new markets and promoting mandarins globally, expressing confidence that exports could reach $750 million by the end of the year.

Sinkholes Multiply Across Konya Plain as Drought and Groundwater Loss Deepen

Konya, TURKEY – Hundreds of sinkholes have appeared across Turkey’s drought-stricken Konya Plain, with new collapses opening in the parched agricultural heartland and raising alarm among farmers and authorities.

A recent assessment by Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) identified 684 sinkholes across the Konya Plain, a key wheat-producing region often described as the country’s breadbasket. Newly released drone footage shows vast craters puncturing fields and splitting the landscape.

Experts attribute the phenomenon primarily to climate change, prolonged drought and intensive groundwater extraction. Heavy irrigation—particularly for sugar beet and corn—has sharply accelerated depletion in the Konya Basin. Geological studies indicate the groundwater table in parts of Konya has dropped tens of metres over recent decades.

Konya Technical University reports that more than 20 large new sinkholes have formed in the past year alone in the Karapınar district. Some measure over 100 feet wide and plunge hundreds of feet deep, posing severe risks to nearby farmland and infrastructure.

The crisis coincides with worsening national water stress. NASA’s Earth Observatory has warned that Turkey is experiencing severe drought, noting that water reservoirs fell to their lowest levels in 15 years in 2021.

Local outlet Turkey Today reports that sinkholes in Karapınar are already threatening livelihoods, with some farmers losing cropland or abandoning high-risk fields amid fears of sudden collapse.

In response, Turkish authorities have stepped up monitoring across the Konya Basin and launched initiatives to curb illegal well drilling, as officials and scientists warn that without significant water management reforms, the sinkholes are likely to keep spreading.

Two-year-old lost his life after being struck by grandfather’s car

Fethiye, MUĞLA – A tragic accident that occurred in Fethiye plunged the district into mourning after a two-year-old child lost his life when he was accidentally struck by his grandfather’s car.

The incident took place in the evening in the Karaçulha neighbourhood. Musa Çağan was leaving his garden in a car when he unintentionally hit his grandson, Muhammet Dursun, who was walking nearby. It was reported that the grandfather did not see the child at the time of the accident.

Severely injured, little Muhammet was rushed to a private hospital by his relatives. Despite all efforts by doctors, the young boy could not be saved and later died at the hospital.

Following the incident, Muhammet Dursun’s body was taken to the Fethiye State Hospital morgue. Police launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The heartbreaking loss deeply saddened the local community, with many expressing condolences to the grieving family.

Harsh winter conditions affect daily life in Turkey’s Kars

Kars, TURKEY – A prolonged period of heavy snowfall and plunging temperatures in Kars province has significantly affected both wildlife and rural life, with brown bears entering hibernation, wetlands freezing over, and livestock farmers coping with harsh winter conditions.

In the forests around Sarıkamış, many brown bears have retreated into their dens following recent snowfall. Research teams from the KuzeyDoğa Association, which has monitored wildlife in Kars and Erzurum since 2006, confirmed that two bears tracked via satellite transmitters have already begun hibernation. Scientific Coordinator Emrah Çoban explained that such snowfall acts as a natural signal for bears to start winter dormancy, which can last between 50 and 130 days, depending on temperature and food availability.

Elsewhere, the extreme cold has frozen Lavaş Lake in Arpaçay district and several smaller ponds and streams, transforming the landscape into striking winter scenery. The severe weather has also impacted daily life, with nighttime temperatures dropping to -10°C, icicles forming on buildings, and farmers facing increasing challenges.

Despite the harsh conditions, local livestock breeders continue their work to protect and care for their animals. In Yağbasan village, cattle breeder Göktürk Öztürk described the routine of feeding animals, letting them outside for fresh air, and ensuring poultry and calves are not confined for prolonged periods, highlighting the resilience and adaptability of rural communities during winter.

The combination of heavy snowfall, frozen wetlands, and hibernating wildlife underscores the dramatic seasonal changes shaping life in Kars province each winter.
