Mayor Karaca Highlights Municipality’s Role in Animal Welfare, Clarifies Wild Boar Responsibility

Fethiye, Muğla Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca has made key statements regarding the district’s animal welfare projects and the wild boar issue affecting some neighbourhoods.

The Mayor confirmed that Fethiye’s new state-of-the-art animal shelter, located in Değirmenbaşı, will be completed by the end of December or early January. Designed as the most modern shelter in the region, the facility was planned and tendered after being allocated to the municipality by the Ministry.

“This project is within our authority and responsibility,” said Karaca. “Our goal is to provide the best conditions for stray animals, with modern standards and proper care facilities.”

Turning to the wild boar problem, Karaca made it clear that the municipality has no legal authority over the issue:

“The pig issue is not under the authority or responsibility of the Fethiye Municipality. Wildlife conservation and national parks need to be involved. Of course, we want to work in harmony with them. If these institutions within our ministry request it, we will gladly mobilise our entire team.”

The Mayor emphasised that wild boars are a shared concern for the community and that coordinated work is already being carried out in certain areas, stretching from Yanıklar to Göcek.

Cleaning Event in Fethiye During European Mobility Week

Fethiye, Muğla A major cleaning campaign will take place in the Fethiye district of Muğla from September 17–20 as part of European Mobility Week, with the aim of raising environmental awareness and promoting sustainable tourism.

The event is being organised in collaboration with Fethiye Municipality, the Seven Seas Travelers Platform (TUMMIAD), and the Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Volunteers and municipal staff will carry out cleaning efforts along the Lycian Way, covering the route from Cennet Bay to Kabak Bay, Butterfly Valley, and Ölüdeniz.

Fethiye Deputy Mayor Oğuz Bolelli stressed the importance of the initiative:

“In an era where we are rapidly depleting the world’s resources, there is a great need for events like this to raise environmental awareness and spread public consciousness about building a sustainable world. We launched our Clean Fethiye campaign last month, and it continues. This joint project with our young entrepreneurs and the chamber of commerce highlights sustainable tourism and we gladly support it. Everyone must do what they can to change the course the world is taking.”

Fethiye Municipality Cleaning Services Director Mahmut Bayraktar said the cleanup would build on the ongoing Clean Fethiye project:

“We will be walking along the Lycian Way, starting from Cennet Bay to Ölüdeniz, promoting sustainable tourism while carrying out cleanup efforts. Our hope is to raise awareness so that these areas remain unpolluted. Let us all leave only our memories and not our waste.”

Koray Hamza Kalaycı, representing TUMMIAD, underlined the entrepreneurial spirit behind the project:

“Entrepreneurship is about finding solutions to problems. With this project, we aimed to maximise sustainability using the resources we have, especially in tourism where people consume the most. Both Fethiye Municipality and the chamber of commerce welcomed our idea, and now we are embarking on this journey together.”

Authorities hope the initiative will inspire residents and visitors alike to help preserve Fethiye’s natural beauty and strengthen its reputation as a centre for sustainable tourism.

New Generation Environmentally Friendly Electric Street Sweepers Begin Operations in Bodrum

Bodrum, Muğla Bodrum Municipality has launched its fleet of 100% electric street sweepers, marking a significant step towards more sustainable urban cleaning practices.

The Sanitation Department introduced five of the new vehicles at a public event in Bodrum Municipality Square, where Mayor Tamer Mandalinci conducted the first trials. The ceremony was attended by Republican People’s Party Bodrum District Chair Tuna Işın, deputy mayors, council members, department heads, and municipal staff.

Designed to be user-friendly, economical, and quiet while offering strong suction power, the sweepers can operate effectively in a wide range of public spaces. Their compact and versatile design allows cleaning in urban and industrial zones, sidewalks, narrow streets, crowded areas, as well as supermarkets, shopping malls, hospitals, warehouses, factories, gardens, and transport hubs—places often inaccessible to conventional sweepers.

Mayor Mandalinci emphasised the importance of the initiative, stating:

“As the Bodrum Municipality, we are here to introduce the five new-generation vacuum sweepers we have recently added to our Cleaning Services Department. These fully electric vehicles, manufactured to European standards, will be our equipment for servicing our streets. Our staff has received the necessary training for the equipment. They have an eight-hour charge and runtime. They are both quieter and will provide much more ergonomic cleaning services in alleyways, streets, and high-traffic areas within the city. I extend my sincere gratitude to our Deputy Mayor Tanju Aksu and our Cleaning Services Director Serkan Kanik for their valuable services. We will carry out even better cleaning operations on all the streets and avenues of Bodrum with our ergonomic devices.”

The municipality highlighted that the new electric sweepers not only reduce noise and emissions but also represent a step forward in aligning with European environmental standards.

Muğla, TurkeyMuğla Metropolitan Municipality has carried out extensive coastal cleanups in Gökova Bay and Göcek Bays, removing more than 31 tonnes of waste from areas accessible only by sea.

According to municipal officials, a total of 31,035 kilograms of waste was collected over the summer months — 25,710 kilograms from Gökova Bay and 5,325 kilograms from Göcek Bay. The waste included plastics, glass, metal, household rubbish, and garbage left by boats, all of which were disposed of safely without harming the environment.

The cleanups form part of the municipality’s ongoing efforts to preserve the region’s world-renowned bays, known for their pristine waters and natural beauty.

Ahmet Aras, Mayor of the Coastal Aegean Municipalities Union and Muğla Metropolitan Municipality, underlined the importance of shared responsibility in protecting the environment:

“Muğla is a city with some of Turkey’s and the world’s most special natural wonders. From Gökova to Göcek, Fethiye to Datça, our unique bays welcome millions of visitors every year. We continue our efforts to pass these beauties on to future generations. Even in bays with no road access, our teams reach from the sea and carry out cleanup operations. We also expect our citizens to be more sensitive about protecting our environment, because protecting nature is our shared responsibility.”

Municipal authorities said the initiative demonstrates their commitment to safeguarding Muğla’s coastal ecosystem while raising public awareness about environmental protection.

Turkish Cities Embrace European Mobility Week ‘For All’

Ankara, Turkey Cities across Turkey are marking the 23rd European Mobility Week (Sept. 16–22) with marches, cycling tours, open-air sports and cultural activities under the theme “Mobility for All.”

Launched in 2002, the campaign promotes reducing carbon emissions, rethinking travel habits, and reclaiming public spaces for people instead of cars.

The week opened in Eskişehir with a colourful city march, where EU Delegation to Turkey Chargé d’Affaires Jurgis Vilcinskas praised sustainable, people-centred transport. He pledged continued EU support for clean mobility projects, recalling EU funds that helped establish Eskişehir’s tram network.

In Mersin, events include inclusive cycling tours, seafront sports, and activities for people with disabilities, culminating in a Sept. 22 Car-Free Day with concerts and street games. In Amasya, the programme began with a symbolic “silent walk” joined by local officials and European representatives.

EU Delegation’s Maria Luisa Wyganowski highlighted the initiative’s inclusivity, stressing that “every citizen, whether a child, elderly, or someone with mobility challenges, has a form of movement beneficial for them.”

Historic Underground Monastery in Nevşehir Set for Revival as Tourism Hub

Nevşehir, Turkey Authorities in central Turkey are restoring a centuries-old underground monastery in the town of Derinkuyu, with plans to open the site as a new cultural attraction.

The Aya Maryeros Underground Monastery, hidden beneath a derelict building and first uncovered in the 1990s, is believed to have served as one of the world’s earliest treatment centres for the mentally ill. Historical sources suggest the complex may have been used for this purpose as early as the 4th century, during the Byzantine era under the supervision of Christian clerics.

Carved into volcanic rock, the monastery includes tunnels, living quarters, cellars, and galleries, resembling the region’s famed underground cities.

“This is considered the oldest known treatment centre of its kind in the world,” said Derinkuyu Mayor Taner İnce. “Although it has survived from ancient times, it has not yet been introduced into our tourism network. Once expropriation is completed, we will be able to proceed more quickly with plans to open it as a museum.”

The ancient city of Tlos in Muğla’s Seydikemer district is revealing its secrets once again. Archaeologists are restoring its stadium and surrounding shops, bringing to life one of Lycia’s most important settlements.

Excavations in the Yakaköy neighbourhood, led by Prof. Dr. Taner Korkut of Akdeniz University, are ongoing year-round. After completing restoration of Tlos’ theatre, attention has now turned to the bustling stadium level and the shops that lined its streets.

Tlos is part of the UNESCO Tentative List for the “Ancient Cities of the Lycian Civilization.” Once the shops are fully cleared, the city’s main street will be revealed, complete with restored columns, giving visitors a glimpse into life nearly 2,000 years ago.

“The stadium was more than a sports arena,” says Prof. Dr. Korkut. “It was a multi-purpose space. On one side there’s a seating stand, while shops opened onto the stadium and the central agora. The city’s earliest street runs along this level. During the Early Roman Period, the Kroneia Festivals—celebrations that brought all of Lycia together—were held here. By the end of the 2nd century AD, a large pool was built in the centre for theatrical performances, including naval battle shows.”

Tlos endured a devastating earthquake in 141 AD, which destroyed many of its structures. “The southern half of the stadium collapsed and became unusable,” Korkut explains. “Yet the site continued to serve as a stage for performances and public events.”

Recent work has uncovered a wide main street, about eight metres across, bordered by a 1.5-metre pavement. Stone slabs still line the street, giving a tangible sense of the city’s ancient life. Archaeologists have also begun restoring the arched shops, each around 30 square metres, with facades and columned galleries reconstructed for visitors to explore.

The restoration project is part of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s Heritage for the Future programme and is expected to be completed by 2026. When finished, Tlos will offer an unparalleled window into the past, showcasing its vibrant streets, bustling shops, and the grandeur of public spaces where Lycian communities once gathered.

Tlos is not just an archaeological site—it’s a story coming back to life, one stone at a time.

Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse Mesmerises Sky-Watchers in Turkey

Ankara, Turkey – In Turkey, millions of people turned their eyes to the sky on Sunday evening to witness the Blood Moon lunar eclipse, one of nature’s most dramatic celestial displays. The rare event, which bathed the Moon in deep shades of red and copper, was also visible across much of Asia, Eastern Europe, and western Australia.

The partial phase of the eclipse began at 7:28 p.m. local time (GMT+3), with the spectacle reaching its peak around 8:30 p.m., when the Moon was fully immersed in Earth’s shadow. The total phase lasted 82 minutes, offering clear and uninterrupted views for observers in Turkey.

Elsewhere, sky-watchers in Western Europe saw only a partial eclipse, while billions worldwide followed the event through live streams shared across multiple platforms.

The next total lunar eclipse is expected to take place on March 2–3, 2026.

Şövalye Island a Major Barrier Against Potential Tsunami in Fethiye

Muğla, Turkey Geophysical Engineer Dr. Engin Erçetin has warned that a powerful earthquake off the coast of Crete or Fethiye could increase the risk of a tsunami along the region’s shores, particularly around Çalış Beach. However, he noted that Şövalye Island serves as a major natural barrier, significantly reducing the potential threat to central Fethiye.

Recalling the 1957 earthquake that led to warnings and limited casualties under then-District Governor Nezih Okuş, Dr. Erçetin reminded residents that Fethiye remains in a first-degree earthquake zone.

“The Crete, Fethiye, and Burdur fault lines are interconnected. Earthquakes in these regions can trigger one another. Fethiye is in a region under constant seismic tension. Just like the North Anatolian Fault, the Hellenic Arc and Aegean faults are also active,” he explained.

Dr. Erçetin noted that the Seydikemer–Esen Arc has the capacity to produce earthquakes of up to magnitude 6.8, while the Hellenic Arc could generate tremors of magnitude 7.2–7.3. He urged both citizens and local authorities to take emergency measures against earthquake risks.

On the tsunami risk, Dr. Erçetin clarified common misconceptions:

“In films, tsunamis are portrayed as waves 8–10 meters high. That won’t happen here. But a serious risk does exist. In the event of a major earthquake off Crete or Fethiye, wave heights could reach 2–2.5 meters along our coasts. These could penetrate nearly 1 kilometre inland, potentially flooding areas up to Mustafa Kemal Boulevard.”

However, he stressed that Şövalye Island provides crucial natural protection:

“The island acts as a natural breakwater, reducing the tsunami impact in central Fethiye to about 1 meter. This is a significant advantage for residents and businesses. Still, constructing additional breakwaters would further enhance safety,” he added.

Authorities continue to highlight the importance of preparedness as Fethiye remains one of Turkey’s most seismically active regions.

Blue Cave, a Natural Beauty in Fethiye, Draws Local and International Tourists

Fethiye, Muğla The Blue Cave, one of Fethiye’s striking natural wonders, has become an increasingly popular attraction for both local and international visitors. Located just two kilometres from Ölüdeniz, the world-famous beach destination, the cave fascinates tourists with its unique natural formation and shimmering blue waters.

The Blue Cave is accessible only by sea, with boat and yacht tours departing daily from Ölüdeniz. These tours are tailored to allow visitors to explore the cave comfortably and often include swimming breaks nearby. Thanks to its close proximity to the coast, the cave is also an inviting spot for those seeking both adventure and relaxation in nature.

Also known as the Cold Water Cave, the Blue Cave owes its striking colour to the abundance of single-celled seaweed. The cave’s natural pool provides refreshing swimming opportunities, while its spacious interior allows entry for small boats. With its single entrance and dramatic lighting, the cave offers an unforgettable experience. Visitors are encouraged to bring waterproof cameras to capture the striking scenery.

The Blue Cave is especially popular in the summer months for its cool, crystal-clear waters. It is also considered a favourable spot for scuba diving, offering a safe and visually captivating environment. The cave’s enclosed structure gives swimmers the sensation of being in a natural pool, enhanced by the interplay of light and water.

Many visitors extend their trips by camping nearby for one or two nights, making the Blue Cave not just a day excursion, but part of a longer escape into Fethiye’s natural beauty.

Turkey’s Fishing Season Opens with Hopes for Abundant Anchovy Catch

Ankara, Turkey Turkey’s 2025 fishing season has opened with optimism, as experts predict a strong anchovy harvest due to low bonito numbers. The season, traditionally launched with the phrase “Vira Bismillah”, began on September 1 in the Black Sea, Marmara and Aegean regions, while the Mediterranean season will start on September 15.

Ramazan Özkaya, chairman of the Central Union of Fisheries Cooperatives (SÜRKOOP), said bonito stocks typically fluctuate in three-to-five-year cycles. After last year’s abundance, bonito are expected to be scarce, while anchovy catches should be plentiful. Reports also suggest strong horse mackerel stocks in the Black Sea, though Özkaya urged fishermen to avoid overfishing smaller schools.

In the Marmara Sea, anchovy fishing has started but remains limited due to high water temperatures, while in the Aegean, sardine and Atlantic mackerel catches are increasing.

Özkaya also warned about the growing impact of climate change on Turkey’s marine ecosystem, citing rising sea temperatures, shifting migration routes and risks to fish reproduction. He called for sustainable fishing practices and reminded consumers that they, too, play a role in protecting future fish stocks.

Motorcycle Accidents in Turkey Rise 17% in First Eight Months of 2025

Ankara, Turkey Across Turkey, 76,162 motorcycle accidents resulting in death or injury were recorded in the first eight months of 2025, marking a 17% increase compared with the same period last year, according to a new report by Anadolu Agency (AA).

The report, titled “The Reality of Motorcycles in Traffic,” draws on data from the Traffic Department of the General Directorate of Security and the Traffic Department of the General Command of the Gendarmerie.

In January–August 2024, a total of 65,291 accidents involving motorcycles resulted in fatalities or injuries. By comparison, this year’s figure rose to 71,604 in police jurisdictions and 4,558 in gendarmerie jurisdictions.

Accidents peaked during the summer months. In 2025, August saw 12,655 cases, followed by 12,067 in July and 11,082 in June. The lowest number of incidents was in February, with 5,556 cases. In 2024, the lowest month was also February, with 2,053 accidents.

The rise comes as motorcycle ownership continues to grow rapidly. As of March 2025, Turkey had 6.39 million registered motorcycles, accounting for 20.1% of all road motor vehicles. Registrations in March alone surged by 58.2% compared with the previous month.

Experts warn that the combination of rising ownership and accident rates highlights the urgent need for stronger traffic safety measures, rider education, and infrastructure improvements to reduce risks for motorcyclists across Turkey.

Karaçulha Wholesale Market to Generate Its Own Electricity with Solar Power Plant

Fethiye, Muğla – Muğla Metropolitan Municipality has added another environmentally friendly project to its renewable energy portfolio with the installation of a solar power plant at the Fethiye Karaçulha Wholesale Market.

The 792 kWp solar power system, mounted on the market’s roof, is expected to generate approximately 1.25 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. Covering a roof area of 4,500 square metres, the project includes 1,440 photovoltaic panels—each producing 550 W—and eight 100 kW inverters. The total investment cost amounted to 13,899,000 TL.

The solar power plant will meet the energy needs of the wholesale market facilities, while surplus electricity will be sold to the grid through offsetting with the distribution company.

Muğla, one of the sunniest provinces in Turkey, has already implemented solar projects at bus terminals, slaughterhouses, temporary animal shelters, and service buildings. The Karaçulha project further strengthens the city’s position as a leader in renewable energy initiatives.

Ahmet Aras, Mayor of Muğla Metropolitan Municipality and President of the Coastal Aegean Municipalities Union, highlighted the significance of the project:

“Muğla is a city whose sun not only fuels tourism but also energy. By transforming this potential into environmentally friendly investments, we are protecting our nature while providing more affordable and sustainable services. By meeting the Karaçulha Wholesale Market’s electricity needs from the sun, we are reducing our carbon footprint and making our city more resilient to the climate crisis. With this vision, we will continue to carry Muğla into the future in a cleaner, greener, and more liveable way.”

Old Hospital Building in Fethiye Left Vacant for Six Years

Fethiye, Muğla – The old hospital building in Fethiye, which served as an SSK hospital for many years before merging with the state hospital and later functioning as a neighbourhood clinic, has been standing vacant for the past six years.

Situated in a central location on İnönü Boulevard, the building is falling into disrepair due to long-term neglect. Broken windows and damaged doors contribute to its abandoned appearance, creating a negative impact on the surrounding area.

The garden of the unused facility has also turned into a dumping ground, with piles of old items and garbage causing both environmental pollution and visual blight.

Residents have voiced frustration that such a centrally located property has been left idle for so long. Many are calling for the building to be restored and repurposed, particularly for healthcare services or other forms of public use.

Fethiye Taxi Drivers Evaluate the Season

Fethiye, Muğla – Taxi drivers in Fethiye say the 2024 summer season fell short of expectations, with business slowing down and rising costs placing increasing pressure on tradespeople.

Local taxi driver Şaban Enez explained that the season was both delayed and shorter than usual, leading to a noticeable decline in business.

“The season started late and ended quickly. Our business has decreased significantly now. Generally speaking, the season ended very quickly, and we didn’t get the business we expected. Last year was better, but this year has been a very bad season. The market is struggling, both for taxi drivers and tradespeople,” Enez said.

Highlighting the financial strain of operating costs, he pointed to fuel prices, vehicle maintenance, and industrial expenses as the main challenges faced by drivers.

“If we consider fuel prices and industrial expenses, fuel, car expenses, and maintenance are truly significant. Honestly, we don’t have any expectations for next season right now; the season is over,” he added.

Muğla, Turkey Muğla, Turkey’s third most-visited city after Istanbul and Antalya, has experienced a 5 percent decrease in foreign tourist arrivals in the first seven months of 2025 compared to the same period last year.

According to official figures, a total of 1,827,840 foreign tourists visited Muğla between January and July 2025. This represents a drop of 88,182 visitors from the 1,916,022 arrivals recorded during the same period in 2024.

The United Kingdom continued to be the leading source of visitors to Muğla, with 799,260 British tourists arriving in the first seven months of the year. The UK was followed by:

  • Russia – 198,892 arrivals
  • Poland – 160,338 arrivals
  • Germany – 115,337 arrivals

On average, Muğla attracts around 1.5 million British tourists annually, making the UK the city’s most consistent foreign market.

Most foreign tourists reached Muğla through its two international airports:

  • Dalaman Airport – 1,056,841 arrivals
  • Milas-Bodrum Airport – 510,203 arrivals

Free Drinking Water to Be Provided on All Flights in Turkey

Ankara, Turkey Turkey’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, has announced that all passengers on domestic and international flights will now be provided with free drinking water.

The new directive, issued through the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, requires airlines to supply at least 200 millilitres of water to each passenger on every flight, regardless of duration.

“This regulation ensures that every passenger will receive free drinking water throughout the journey,” Uraloğlu said, noting that dehydration caused by long waits or insufficient cabin ventilation can result in headaches, loss of concentration, and even medical emergencies.

The minister emphasised that the measure is designed to both reduce health risks and improve passenger satisfaction. Referring to global best practices, he underlined that meeting passengers’ basic needs is considered a fundamental responsibility of airlines worldwide.

Uraloğlu also stated that the initiative will contribute to enhancing the international reputation of Turkish carriers, particularly Turkish Airlines.

Planned Multi-Storey Car Park Sparks Debate Over Traffic Relief

Fethiye, Muğla – The Fethiye Municipality’s planned multi-storey car park in the Tuesday Market area has become a major talking point among residents, with differing views on whether the project will ease traffic congestion in the city.

The proposed five-storey facility, which includes two basement levels, is designed to accommodate up to 1,500 vehicles. Once operational, the municipality plans to offer free shuttle services to the city centre, allowing drivers to park their vehicles and continue their journeys by public transport.

Despite these plans, residents remain divided. Some argue that since the square is already used as a parking lot, a multi-storey structure may not bring significant improvement. Others believe the project will help reduce congestion and improve parking availability in the busy district.

As discussions continue, the question remains whether the new car park will provide a long-term solution to Fethiye’s parking shortages and growing urban traffic problems.

Luxury Yacht Capsizes on Maiden Voyage in Black Sea

Black Sea, Turkey – A luxury yacht worth nearly $1 million capsized within minutes of setting off on its maiden voyage this week in the Black Sea.

On Tuesday, September 2, the Dolce Vento tipped over about 200 meters off the coast of Turkey, according to Turkish Maritime Media.

Video footage shows the 80-foot vessel being lowered into the water by a construction lift before beginning its first journey. After around 15 minutes at sea, the yacht began leaning to its left side before eventually overturning completely.

One person was seen climbing to the top of the vessel before jumping into the water, while others floated nearby in life jackets.

Local media reported that the yacht’s owner, captain, and two crew members all made it safely back to shore. No casualties were reported.

The yacht, valued at around 40 million Turkish liras (just under $1 million), was completed in 2024 and is said to be the largest vessel ever built at the shipyard. An investigation into the incident has been launched.

The search effort involved the Gendarmerie Search and Rescue (JAK) Team, AFAD units, and several NGOs. In total, 43 personnel, nine vehicles, a cadaver dog, and a tracking dog took part in the mission.

Teams eventually discovered Wenkai’s body in a steep area between Kabak Bay and Butterfly Valley.

Authorities confirmed that an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Loggerhead Turtle Hatchlings Released into the Sea on Yeşilöz Beach

Alanya, Antalya – Loggerhead turtle hatchlings have begun emerging from their nests on Yeşilöz Beach, located east of Alanya in Antalya’s Alanya district.

At first light, volunteers from Gazipaşa gathered on the beach to help guide the endangered hatchlings safely to the sea. The group carefully removed the baby turtles from their nests and turned them toward the water, ensuring they avoided obstacles on their journey.

Yeşilöz Beach is one of the few areas in the Mediterranean where loggerhead turtles frequently nest. Environmental volunteers stressed the importance of protecting the site, noting its vital role in the species’ survival.

Local resident and environmental volunteer Güldane Şahin highlighted both the ecological importance of the turtles and the challenges they face. “The hatching of loggerhead sea turtles continues. Five or six years ago, jellyfish populations had increased, but turtle numbers had decreased. Loggerhead turtles help clean our seas. This year, we’ve located 602 nests along 6.5 kilometres of coast. Hatchlings will continue until October 15, though we are also encountering some dead hatchlings and rotting eggs due to changing weather,” she said.

Conservationists continue to monitor the beach closely to ensure the survival of as many hatchlings as possible.

Turkey Faces Rising Wildfire Risks Amid Climate Change and Social Shifts

Turkey is facing mounting wildfire threats as climate change, drought, and rural depopulation combine to heighten risks across the Mediterranean basin and beyond. Experts warn that fires are no longer confined to the country’s Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, but are spreading northward into historically less-affected regions.

Prof. Dr. Yusuf Serengil of Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa said rising temperatures, strong winds, and fragmented forest structures are driving the danger, while rural depopulation has weakened traditional fire prevention practices. On peak days, Turkey experiences 40–50 outbreaks, with some escalating into large-scale wildfires.

A report by World Weather Attribution found that climate change has made severe wildfires 10 times more likely in Turkey and Greece. Without stronger preventive measures and a shift away from fossil fuels, future wildfires could become 18% more intense, six times more likely, and 25% harder to control.

Experts stress that Turkey must move beyond firefighting to proactive prevention, warning that the country — like much of southern Europe — has entered a new era of heightened wildfire risks.

Season Begins, Fethiye Fish Market Prices Drop

Fethiye, Muğla With the lifting of the nationwide fishing ban on September 1, fishermen in Fethiye returned to the sea after a long break, bringing their first catches to shore and filling the stalls at the Fethiye Fish Market. Within a day, prices saw a noticeable drop, giving both tradesmen and consumers a promising start to the season.

Fethiye Fish Market fisherman Mahir Kahya highlighted the sharp fall in prices:

“Red mullet, which was 1,500 lira three days ago, has now dropped to 1,000 lira. Sardine has fallen from 400 lira to 300 lira. As fish become more abundant, prices will continue to drop,” he said.

The fishing ban, which began on April 15, ended on September 1, allowing large industrial vessels back to sea. With the change in weather and the arrival of rains in the coming weeks, Kahya expects even greater abundance and lower prices.

Kahya also emphasised the importance of fish as a healthy food source:

“Fish is a healthy commodity from the sea. After September 1, small boats disappear, and fishing is carried out with larger vessels. With more catches expected, people will be able to enjoy fish from the Black Sea and Marmara regions at more affordable prices.”

Looking ahead, Kahya noted that anchovy is expected to be plentiful this year, while bonito may be less abundant:

“Our season has already started well. We want our people to eat plenty of fish,” he added, wishing all fishermen a successful season.

Initiatives Launched to Promote Fethiye’s Health Tourism Potential in London

Fethiye, Muğla The Fethiye Health Platform, operating under the Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FTSO), has launched new initiatives to promote the region’s growing health tourism potential in London.

A meeting held at the FTSO Meğri Hall brought together representatives of private healthcare institutions in Fethiye. The session was chaired by FTSO Chairman Osman Çıralı and featured a presentation by Vatan Öz, owner of the London-based Avrupa Newspaper. Öz shared insights and feedback on promotional strategies, including advertising campaigns on London buses, taxis, the underground, and in popular magazines.

The discussions focused on coordinated steps to expand Fethiye’s visibility in the UK health tourism market under the leadership of FTSO.

“We are working with institutions to promote Fethiye and Seydikemer as tourism destinations in London. Now, through advertisements on buses, taxis, the metro, and in magazines, we aim to reach millions more and attract greater numbers of tourists from the UK,” he said.

The campaign aims not only to highlight Fethiye’s medical and wellness services but also to strengthen the region’s overall appeal as a tourism hub.

Summer Heat in Turkey Expected to Linger Until October, Expert Warns

Istanbul, Turkey – Temperatures across Turkey are forecast to remain above seasonal norms well into October, delaying the arrival of autumn, according to meteorologist Orhan Şen.

Şen noted that starting Monday, September 1, temperatures nationwide will dip slightly by 1–2 degrees, including in Istanbul, where they will hover around 32°C. However, he stressed that “summer will last until October, and even into mid-October, we may experience a warm, summer-like climate.”

The meteorologist also issued a stark warning about the country’s worsening drought:

“Precipitation has declined by 74 percent. We are living through the hottest and driest period in the past 65 years. Agricultural drought is now imminent. Farmers will not be able to plant because the soil has not retained moisture,” he said.

This year, Turkey has endured one of the driest summers on record. In Izmir, the country’s third-largest city, authorities introduced controlled water cuts last month as reservoirs dropped to critical levels.

At the same time, the nation has been battling severe wildfires. In Denizli province, a forest fire burning since September 1 has forced the precautionary evacuation of two neighborhoods.

A recent study by World Weather Attribution (WWA) found that climate change has intensified wildfires across the eastern Mediterranean, including Turkey, Greece, and Cyprus. The group reported that fires in the region were 22 percent more intense in 2025, Europe’s worst year on record for wildfires, with more than 1 million hectares scorched, 20 lives lost, and 80,000 people forced to evacuate.

Driven by soaring temperatures above 40°C, extreme drought, and strong winds, the region’s wildfires highlight the growing impact of climate change on Mediterranean countries.

Turkey Set to Break Record with Over 2 Million Cruise Tourists in 2025

Istanbul, Turkey – Turkey is expected to welcome more than 2 million cruise tourists by the end of the year, potentially surpassing the record set in 2013, when 2.2 million visitors arrived by sea.

According to TÜRSAB Chairman Firuz Bağlıkaya, more than 1 million passengers arrived on 675 cruise ships between January and July, marking a 19% increase compared to the same period last year. Bağlıkaya highlighted Turkey’s strategic position at the crossroads of the Eastern Mediterranean, Aegean, and Black Sea routes, making it an increasingly attractive hub for cruise operators.

The expansion of Galataport in Istanbul and Turkey’s growing role as a home port have boosted revenues for airlines, hotels, restaurants, and local businesses. Ports such as Kuşadası, Izmir, and Bodrum are also seeing higher demand, strengthening the country’s position in the global cruise market.

Bağlıkaya underlined that cruise tourists bring high added value and strong spending potential, and called for strategies to match the changing traveller profile. He suggested a cruise summit in Istanbul to chart a roadmap for the sector’s future growth.

MSC Cruises Turkey Country Manager Işın Hekimoğlu added that Turkey’s cultural heritage, natural beauty, and location play a central role in cruise growth. He said the company aims to host 35,000 Turkish guests in the next three years, while the rise in foreign passengers will continue to revitalise port cities and support local economies.

Fethiye, Muğla As part of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change’s General Directorate of Natural Assets Protection efforts, monitoring and protection activities continue in the Fethiye-Göcek Special Environmental Protection Area, which includes Çalış, Yanıklar, and Karaot (Akgöl) beaches. This season, loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) hatchlings have begun reaching the sea from protected nests in the region.

Officials reported that while the number of nests has decreased this year compared to last, due to issues such as businesses using white lighting and waste left behind by picnickers, more than 100 loggerhead nests have been secured and monitored. Hatchlings from these nests have already been released into the sea.

Dr. Doğukan Mutlu, a member of the project team, said that volunteers from various universities have joined the work and made significant contributions to field studies. He shared the season’s results:

“We have identified over 100 loggerhead nests so far. The Ministry, together with volunteers, has been intensively monitoring and protecting loggerhead sea turtles in Fethiye’s Çalış, Yanıklar, and Karaot areas. Nests are protected with cages, and hatchlings are being safely guided to the sea.”

Dr. Mutlu warned, however, that Çalış Beach remains a critical problem area:

“This area experiences intense human activity, especially during summer months. Waste left by day visitors poses a serious risk to the nests. More importantly, the white lights used by businesses are harmful. We observed a significant decrease in the number of nests in Çalış compared to previous years. During the nesting season, turtles can become disoriented and stressed due to large crowds and bright lighting.”

He stressed that solutions require collaboration with local stakeholders and added:

“The Ministry’s work is carried out with the support of researchers and volunteers, but locals also need to take greater ownership. The same sensitivity should be shown by businesses operating on the beaches.”

Loggerhead turtles, a vulnerable species, continue to be a vital part of the marine ecosystem in Muğla’s Fethiye district, where protection projects are crucial for their survival.

Cost Crisis at Producers’ Market: Farmers and Buyers Both Suffer

Fethiye, Muğla The producers’ market held every Friday in the Fethiye district of Muğla has become the centre of growing frustration, with both farmers and consumers voicing complaints about rising costs and low sales prices.

Local producer Mevlüt Sarıçlı said they are struggling to sell their harvest at even the cost price, despite bringing produce from the highlands.

“We are currently bringing our produce from the highlands, but the market is not very cheerful. We can’t sell our produce, and the market isn’t saving our labour. The products we sell wholesale have sold out. We are now stuck in the ground. We want the government to find a solution as soon as possible. If they don’t support the producers, we’re in dire straits,” Sarıçlı said.

He underlined the burden of agricultural input costs, particularly fertiliser and transport:

“When we go to buy fertiliser, one sack costs 4,000 TL. My one ton of tomatoes costs 10,000 TL, and two sacks of fertiliser cost another 10,000 TL. It’s not even worth the cost of the produce we bring here. Right now, it sells for 25 TL. How are we going to produce under these conditions?”

Consumers, meanwhile, expressed sympathy for farmers while acknowledging the rising cost of living. Local resident Gülgün Doğan, who came to shop at the market, said farmers’ struggles are visible in every stage of production:

“Farmers will plough, produce, and spray… How much will all of this cost? How will they ultimately sell? There’s also the transportation cost. Prices seem reasonable to consumers right now, but actually, 25 lira is cheap compared to these costs. I’m a buyer, so I should complain, but…”

In Fethiye, producers are calling for urgent government support, citing fertiliser prices, transport expenses, and low purchase rates as obstacles to sustaining agriculture, while residents acknowledge that farmers’ labour is not being rewarded despite higher living costs.

Mayor Karaca Responds Strongly to Claims He Will Switch to AK Party

Fethiye, Muğla Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca has issued a firm denial of claims circulating in some media outlets and on social media that he intends to “switch to the AK Party.” Emphasising his commitment to the Republican People’s Party (CHP) and the citizens who elected him, Karaca said:

“I would not betray the votes of the 45,600 citizens who voted for me. I am loyal to this party founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. I am in my place; no one should worry.”

Karaca criticised those spreading the rumours, claiming they were doing so to attract attention:

“I am not someone who would betray the 45,600 votes given to me. I would not betray my party, which nominated me as a mayoral candidate in Fethiye, the most beautiful city in the world. This party is the party that founded the republic. I am loyal to this party founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.”

The mayor also addressed ongoing speculation that has followed him since taking office:

“Rumours such as ‘a trustee will be appointed to the municipality’ or ‘the mayor will be removed from office’ have been circulating since I took office. I am absolutely against transfers between political parties. I have been mayor for three terms; I have never discriminated against anyone based on political views. But let everyone know this: Alim Karaca has a stance, and he will never compromise on it. I will stand firm, no matter the cost.”

Highlighting his record in office, Karaca said he has faced no legal investigations and underlined the municipality’s financial health:

“I’ve been in office for three terms, and there isn’t a single legal case against me. Dozens of state inspectors and the Court of Accounts have reviewed all our documents, and we haven’t found the slightest deficiency. We are the only municipality in Turkey with no debt. We provide uninterrupted service in 41 neighbourhoods. We serve as mayor with honour and dignity, and we will continue to protect every penny of our citizens.”

Reaffirming his political stance, Karaca concluded:

“I will continue to serve as mayor of the Republican People’s Party, no matter the cost. I will not betray the votes of the 45,600 citizens who voted for me; I will protect them to the very end.”

48 Baby Turtles Reach the Sea in Aydın

Aydın, Turkey – In Aydın, western Turkey, 48 baby turtles emerged from their nest on Sevgi Beach in the Davutlar neighbourhood and successfully made their way to the sea.

According to a statement from the Association for the Protection of Ecosystems and Nature Lovers, the caretta caretta nest was carefully opened under controlled conditions with the contribution of Professor Oğuz Türkozan, a faculty member of the Biology Department at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Adnan Menderes University.

The 48 hatchlings that emerged later reached the blue waters, while local residents on the beach recorded the moment on their mobile phones.

Association President Bahattin Sürücü stated that although Aydın lies outside the usual nesting areas for sea turtles, the number of nests in the region has increased in recent years.

“This year, there were seven nests in Kuşadası and three in Didim. All nests were placed under protection through our collaboration with the National Parks Branch Directorate. The first hatchlings in Kuşadası have now started emerging. A turtle laid 61 eggs in the Kuşadası nest, and 48 hatchlings reached the sea, while 13 eggs were found to be defective. The increasing number of nests each year is very important,” Sürücü said.

    2,000-Year-Old Seagrass Discovered in Göcek

Göcek, Muğla – A 2,000-year-old seagrass has been discovered off the coast of Kızılada (Red Island) during the Göcek leg of the Blue Breath Project, a joint initiative by Garanti BBVA and TURMEPA. The age of the plant was determined by Prof. Dr. Ergün Taşkın and his team, marking the first time such a finding has been recorded in Turkey.

The discovery, made within the Fethiye-Göcek Special Environmental Protection Area, is considered a milestone in marine research. Laboratory studies confirmed the seagrass’s age, providing new insight into the role of these ecosystems in biodiversity, oxygen production, and carbon capture.

Launched in 2021, the Blue Breath Project has carried out environmental and scientific work across Turkey, from waste collection to biodiversity mapping. In Göcek, more than 860,000 litres of liquid waste have been collected from boats, preventing pollution of the surrounding waters.

Project leaders say the discovery will support future efforts to protect and cultivate seagrass meadows, vital habitats that help combat climate change and preserve marine life.

Calls for Traffic Relief in Ölüdeniz Ahead of 2026 Summer Season

Fethi̇ye, Muğla – Leaders of the Ölüdeniz Motor Carriers Cooperative have met with local officials to propose temporary measures aimed at easing traffic congestion in the Ölüdeniz region.

Ünal Arıcı, President of the Ölüdeniz Motor Carriers Cooperative No. 22, along with board members from Fethiye urban transportation cooperatives, visited Kadir Sarıhan, the AK Party Fethiye District Chairman, to discuss solutions for the region’s persistent traffic problems, which worsen during the peak summer season.

Arıcı suggested opening existing publicly owned parking lots in Ölüdeniz and Belcekız for two to three months without harming the natural environment, as the area currently has limited parking aside from the Kumburnu Nature Park lot. He also called for long-term planning, including the development of multi-story parking to accommodate the thousands of vehicles that enter Ölüdeniz daily. “An alternative road will be built, but temporary parking arrangements are needed to ease traffic until the new road is completed,” he said.

Responding to the proposal, Sarıhan confirmed that preparations for the 3,450-metre Ölüdeniz alternative road are nearly finished and stressed that it would be ready in time for the 2026 season. “We are aware of the traffic challenges in Fethiye and Ölüdeniz,” he said. “Public authorities and local government must work together on urban planning. We will convey your requests to the relevant parties.”

The meeting highlighted both immediate and long-term strategies to improve traffic flow in one of Turkey’s most visited summer destinations.

Lost Ottoman Ship Found Off Datça, Muğla

Datça, Muğla, Turkey – A long-lost Ottoman ship, which was hit in a skirmish off the coast of Datça and had previously washed ashore and caught fire, has been discovered during underwater excavations.

Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced the findings, highlighting the historical significance of the shipwreck. “More than 30 rifles, over 50 humbaras, thousands of bullets, and the largest collection of pipes from the Ottoman period were found in the first and only 17th-century Ottoman shipwreck excavated in Turkey,” he said.

The artifacts were uncovered this year during the Kızlan Ottoman Shipwreck Underwater Excavation, part of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s Heritage for the Future project. The excavation, conducted off the coast of Datça under the direction of Prof. Dr. Harun Özdaş with assistance from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nilhan Kızldağ, has revealed numerous items from Turkey’s underwater archaeological heritage.

Minister Ersoy emphasised the importance of the discovery, describing it as one of the most remarkable finds in global underwater archaeology. In a social media post, he said: “We are following the traces of our ancestors not only on land but also at sea. With our Ministry’s ‘Heritage to the Future Project,’ we are preserving our unique heritage and passing it on to future generations. The Kızlan Ottoman Shipwreck recently unearthed weapons, porcelain, chess sets, and unique artifacts that shed light on history. This discovery is the first example that brings Ottoman naval power and trade to the present day and stands as one of the most striking finds not only in Turkey but also in the world.”

The excavation continues, promising further insights into Ottoman maritime history and trade networks.

Dead Fish Wash Ashore in İzmir Bay, Turkey

İzmir, Turkey – İzmir Bay on Turkey’s western coast is once again experiencing mass fish deaths. On Saturday, dead fish appeared along Turan Beach in the Bayraklı district, and today large numbers were observed along Karşıyaka’s shoreline.

Teams from the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality collected and disposed of the fish. The bay’s water has turned green and brown, and the strong odour has left the shoreline largely deserted.

Local residents reported the persistent smell. “There are dead fish everywhere, from large to small. The smell is extremely strong,” said visitor Gökhan Havuz.

Experts attribute the die-off to pollution and rising water temperatures. Professor Ergün Taşkın of Manisa Celal Bayar University said İzmir Bay faces high pressure from urban, industrial, port, domestic, and agricultural activities, causing toxic algal blooms that can kill fish.

Dr. Levent Yurga of Ege University added that bacterial decomposition of dead plankton and marine animals worsens the odour, and that cyanobacteria, diatoms, and dinoflagellates have caused recurring fish deaths.

“Short-term fixes are ineffective. The only long-term solution is to stop pollution at its source,” Yurga said.

Last year, dead fish washed ashore in the same area, prompting investigations and measures to improve water quality.

Mayor Announces 5-Story Parking Garage, New Bus Terminal, and Alternative Roads

FETHIYE — Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca announced plans to tackle the city’s long-standing parking problem with a new five-story parking garage in the city center. The project, which has received two years of planning approval, will include two underground and three above-ground floors, with a capacity of 1,300–1,500 vehicles.

Karaca said the municipality is coordinating with the Ministry and may secure a loan if needed, noting that the project costs approximately 650 million lira. “We are currently a debt-free municipality, but no matter the cost, we will implement this project,” he said, adding that a 50/50 partnership with the Metropolitan Municipality is planned.

To ease city traffic, the project will also provide free electric vehicles for citizens to travel between the parking garage and local businesses or official institutions. In addition, alternative road projects on the Ölüdeniz and Hisarönü-Kayaköy routes, smart intersections, and a new bus terminal near Çamköy Market are under consideration.

Karaca emphasized that addressing parking is a priority for the city. “This project is essential. After the current public announcement period ends and Ministry approvals are obtained, we will move forward to solve Fethiye’s serious parking problem,” he said.

More than Half of Turkish Households in Lower Socioeconomic Groups, TurkStat Data Show

ANKARA —More than half of Turkey’s households fall into the lower half of the country’s socioeconomic scale, according to a new index released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat).

The index, covering all 26 million households, combines data on education, income and occupation, assigning scores grouped into seven categories from “A+” (highest) to “E” (lowest). Results show that just 1.1% of households rank in the top “A+” group, while 16.7% are in the bottom “E” category. Combined with the adjacent “D” and “C2” groups, 51.8% of households fall into the lower half. Only 12.1% are in the top two categories.

Education carries the greatest weight in the index, yet despite expanded schooling over the past two decades, economic inequality remains entrenched. High inflation and stagnant wages have limited upward mobility, leaving wealth concentrated among a narrow elite.

Geographic divides are stark: nearly 29% of top-tier households are in İstanbul, followed by Ankara and İzmir, while rural districts in Anatolia dominate the lowest categories. Even in major cities, inequality persists — in İzmir, 15% of households are in the bottom group.

The findings underscore structural disparities rather than short-term poverty, with the next update to the SES index due in 2028.

New Vehicle Safety Requirements Introduced in Highway Traffic Regulation

TURKEY — The Highway Traffic Regulation in Turkey has been updated to introduce new safety requirements for vehicles under its scope, the Official Gazette reported. The amendments make it mandatory for affected vehicles to be equipped with a vehicle tracking system, internal and external cameras, a video recording device, and an emergency button.

The implementation schedule depends on the vehicle’s model year. Vehicles from 2023 to 2025 must comply at their first inspection after Jan. 1, 2026. Cars from 2018 to 2022 must meet the requirements at the first inspection after Jan. 1, 2027, while vehicles from 2017 or earlier must comply at the first inspection after Jan. 1, 2028.

A transition period applies to school buses registered between Feb. 18, 2025, and Oct. 1, 2025, which are already equipped with cameras under previous regulations. These buses will not need to meet the new standards until their first inspection after Dec. 31, 2027.

Authorities said the regulation aims to enhance safety, monitoring, and emergency response capabilities in public transport and other regulated vehicles across Turkey, reflecting the country’s commitment to modernizing vehicle safety standards and protecting passengers on its roads.

Welcome to our midweek round-up of the latest news and updates from Fethiye and across Turkey.

    Curated from various news sources

MUSKİ Strengthens Drinking Water Infrastructure and Cleans Streams in Göcek

Göcek – The Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Water and Sewerage Administration (MUSKİ) teams are carrying out pipeline renewal and stream cleaning works in Göcek, Fethiye, to both secure the drinking water infrastructure and protect the environment in this important tourism centre.

With these infrastructure investments and environmental improvements, Göcek is becoming a healthier and safer place to live. The works, which include both stream cleaning and drinking water line replacement, address long-standing needs in the neighbourhood.

In the Dereboğazı area, MUSKİ teams are relocating the drinking water network line from private land to public space. The previous location had made it difficult to respond quickly to outages, often leading to prolonged disruptions. As part of the project, 200 metres of a 400-metre line have already been relocated.

MUSKİ is also undertaking stream cleaning works across Göcek. In the past three months, 2,100 metres of streams have been cleared, including 1,500 metres in Dereboğazı and 600 metres on Likya Street.

Fethiye Municipal Council Member Fatih Ugan expressed gratitude for the efforts:

“We saw that the metropolitan municipality teams have cleaned the Sırım Stream. Our citizens have been requesting this for a long time. Previously, when the stream was not cleaned, blockages during rainfall would cause flooding in homes and plots of land. This problem has now been solved. Both we and our citizens are very pleased. We thank our Metropolitan Mayor, Ahmet Aras.”

Volkan Öztürk, Head of the Fethiye Sewerage and Rainwater Teams at MUSKİ, added:

“We cleaned 1,500 metres of streams in the Dereboğazı area before winter. This work is done regularly every year to prevent flooding and inundation. We also eliminated complaints about flies and odours. We will continue our work periodically in other neighbourhoods. In line with the instructions of our Metropolitan Mayor, Mr. Ahmet Aras, these efforts will continue throughout the city to protect nature and the environment.”

These works aim to strengthen drinking water security in Göcek while reducing the risk of flooding during heavy rains. With ongoing investments and regular maintenance, MUSKİ continues to support both the residents and the environment of Muğla.

Residents Disturbed by Rehabilitation Work in Fethiye

Fethiye – Rehabilitation works on the Toptaş Stream in the Taşyaka neighbourhood of Muğla’s Fethiye district, carried out by the State Hydraulic Works (DSİ), have caused disruption for local residents and businesses.

The project, managed by the 21st Regional Directorate of DSİ, has reached its final phase and includes cleaning the streambed, rectifying the water channel, and landscaping the surrounding area. While the work aims to improve infrastructure and reduce the risk of flooding, the ongoing activity has created difficulties for the community.

Residents report that dust, soil, and noise from construction vehicles have affected daily life and business operations in the neighbourhood. Many have voiced frustration and are calling for the project to be completed as quickly as possible to reduce further inconvenience.

Despite the disturbances, locals acknowledge the importance of the rehabilitation work for long-term safety and environmental improvement. However, they emphasise the need for faster progress and more effective measures to minimise disruption during the process.

742 Million TL of Energy Produced from Garbage in Muğla

Muğla – Muğla Metropolitan Municipality, which places great importance on combating climate change, is turning waste into energy through its biomass power plants. By processing household waste, the municipality not only prevents harmful methane emissions but also produces electricity equivalent to the needs of hundreds of thousands of households.

Since the launch of the project, a total of 742 million TL worth of energy has been generated from garbage in Muğla. The municipality underlines that this approach contributes both to environmental protection and to the regional economy by turning waste into a resource.

Officials highlighted that the plants play a key role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, ensuring more sustainable energy production, and leaving a cleaner environment for future generations.

Muğla Metropolitan Municipality continues to invest in renewable and clean energy projects as part of its strategy to fight climate change and build a greener city.

NEXT Sosyal Gains Momentum as Turkey’s Social Media Alternative

Turkey’s new social media platform, NEXT Sosyal, is making waves in the digital world, surpassing one million users and rising to the top of app store rankings within weeks of its launch. Designed to offer a fresh and engaging experience, the platform combines innovative features with a user-friendly interface, quickly attracting both local and international audiences. Analysts say its rapid growth reflects a demand for alternatives in the crowded social media landscape, positioning NEXT Sosyal as one of Turkey’s fastest-growing digital networks.

The platform received a major boost this week when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made his first post on NEXT Sosyal. Quoting a line from poet Erdem Bayazıt’s Soon the Day Will Rise — “A flower sprouted between concrete walls” — Erdoğan asked followers, “Are you ready?” His message was accompanied by the hashtag #We’reStarting and emojis of the Turkish flag, the Earth, and a rocket.

The president’s endorsement provides a symbolic boost for NEXT Sosyal, reinforcing Turkey’s push to promote homegrown digital platforms and highlighting the platform’s growing influence in the country’s online landscape.

Artvin Designated Turkey’s First “Smoke-Free City” in Pilot Project

Turkey has selected its northern province of Artvin as the pilot region for a new “smoke-free city” initiative, part of a broader effort to reduce tobacco use and protect public health.

Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu announced that smoking will be entirely banned in public institutions across Artvin. Residents seeking to quit will receive expanded support, including free medication and access to a strengthened quit-smoking hotline. The program will also strictly regulate e-cigarettes and disposable vapes.

Introduced in 2009, Turkey’s nationwide anti-smoking legislation prohibited tobacco use in enclosed public spaces such as restaurants, cafes, and workplaces. The new city-wide measures aim to build on that framework and could later be implemented in other provinces. Earlier this year, the Ministry of Health launched a nationwide campaign under the theme “Smoke-Free Turkey” to coincide with the 16th anniversary of the tobacco control law.

Professor Dr. Mustafa Aydın, president of the Turkish Anti-Smoking Association, described the initiative as “a historic step for public health.” He highlighted the economic and health burden of tobacco, noting that it costs Turkey an estimated $20 billion annually and contributes to nearly one-tenth of total healthcare spending.

“Smoking is no longer an individual choice but a societal crisis,” Aydın said, warning that tobacco addiction fuels heart disease, cancer, and chronic illnesses. He stressed that raising awareness alongside stricter enforcement is crucial, particularly among youth increasingly targeted by flavored e-cigarettes and online marketing.

Aydın added that Artvin’s role as the first smoke-free city could serve as a model for other provinces:

“If local authorities, civil society, and citizens act together, a smoke-free Turkey is not just a dream but an achievable goal.”

According to a 2023 study, 34.8 percent of Turkey’s population aged 15 and over use tobacco products, and nearly 100,000 people die annually from tobacco-related illnesses in the country.

Clean Fethiye Campaign Expands with Citizen Support

Fethiye – The Clean Fethiye campaign is continuing to gain momentum with strong support from local residents.

A large-scale cleanup operation was carried out on Wednesday along the coastline from Göcek Ayten Bay to Osman Ağa Bay. The initiative aimed to raise awareness of the risks posed by forest fires and to highlight the importance of protecting the region’s natural environment.

In parallel with the cleanup efforts, municipal authorities are conducting inspections through cameras installed at strategic points across the city. Legal proceedings are being initiated against individuals found to be in violation of environmental regulations. Officials reiterated their appeal to the public to help keep Fethiye clean by refraining from littering and by disposing of cigarette butts responsibly.

The municipality extended its thanks to all citizens who took part in today’s campaign, as well as to its dedicated staff. Special appreciation was also expressed to Milliyet Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Özay Şendir and Aegean Region Representative Aslı Öktener for their support.
