Cornfield Turns Out to Be Cannabis Field in Muğla

Köyceğiz, Muğla – Gendarmerie teams in the Köyceğiz district of Muğla uncovered a field disguised as a cornfield that was being used to cultivate cannabis plants on Monday.

Responding to a tip-off, the teams raided the location and seized two truckloads of female cannabis, which is typically used in the production of marijuana. The plants were destroyed on site before they could be distributed, preventing potential harm to the public.

Authorities confirmed that the operation was carried out swiftly and efficiently, highlighting ongoing efforts by local law enforcement to combat illegal drug cultivation and distribution in the region.

An investigation into the incident is continuing, as gendarmerie teams work to identify those responsible for the illicit operation.

48 Baby Turtles Reach the Sea in Aydın

Aydın, Turkey – In Aydın, western Turkey, 48 baby turtles emerged from their nest on Sevgi Beach in the Davutlar neighbourhood and successfully made their way to the sea.

According to a statement from the Association for the Protection of Ecosystems and Nature Lovers, the caretta caretta nest was carefully opened under controlled conditions with the contribution of Professor Oğuz Türkozan, a faculty member of the Biology Department at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Adnan Menderes University.

The 48 hatchlings that emerged later reached the blue waters, while local residents on the beach recorded the moment on their mobile phones.

Association President Bahattin Sürücü stated that although Aydın lies outside the usual nesting areas for sea turtles, the number of nests in the region has increased in recent years.

“This year, there were seven nests in Kuşadası and three in Didim. All nests were placed under protection through our collaboration with the National Parks Branch Directorate. The first hatchlings in Kuşadası have now started emerging. A turtle laid 61 eggs in the Kuşadası nest, and 48 hatchlings reached the sea, while 13 eggs were found to be defective. The increasing number of nests each year is very important,” Sürücü said.

Vacant Lot Turns into Garbage Dump in Seydikemer

Seydikemer, Muğla – A vacant lot adjacent to the covered market in Seydikemer’s Cumhuriyet neighbourhood has been filled with rubble and discarded household items, drawing criticism from local residents.

Residents expressed concern over the pollution, noting that the site has become both unsightly and unhygienic. One resident took to social media to voice their frustration, asking: “Is this a dump, a recycling center, or a waste collection area?”

Local authorities have not yet issued a statement regarding the situation.

2,000-Year-Old Seagrass Discovered in Göcek

Göcek, Muğla – A 2,000-year-old seagrass has been discovered off the coast of Kızılada (Red Island) during the Göcek leg of the Blue Breath Project, a joint initiative by Garanti BBVA and TURMEPA. The age of the plant was determined by Prof. Dr. Ergün Taşkın and his team, marking the first time such a finding has been recorded in Turkey.

The discovery, made within the Fethiye-Göcek Special Environmental Protection Area, is considered a milestone in marine research. Laboratory studies confirmed the seagrass’s age, providing new insight into the role of these ecosystems in biodiversity, oxygen production, and carbon capture.

Launched in 2021, the Blue Breath Project has carried out environmental and scientific work across Turkey, from waste collection to biodiversity mapping. In Göcek, more than 860,000 litres of liquid waste have been collected from boats, preventing pollution of the surrounding waters.

Project leaders say the discovery will support future efforts to protect and cultivate seagrass meadows, vital habitats that help combat climate change and preserve marine life.

Calls for Traffic Relief in Ölüdeniz Ahead of 2026 Summer Season

Fethi̇ye, Muğla – Leaders of the Ölüdeniz Motor Carriers Cooperative have met with local officials to propose temporary measures aimed at easing traffic congestion in the Ölüdeniz region.

Ünal Arıcı, President of the Ölüdeniz Motor Carriers Cooperative No. 22, along with board members from Fethiye urban transportation cooperatives, visited Kadir Sarıhan, the AK Party Fethiye District Chairman, to discuss solutions for the region’s persistent traffic problems, which worsen during the peak summer season.

Arıcı suggested opening existing publicly owned parking lots in Ölüdeniz and Belcekız for two to three months without harming the natural environment, as the area currently has limited parking aside from the Kumburnu Nature Park lot. He also called for long-term planning, including the development of multi-story parking to accommodate the thousands of vehicles that enter Ölüdeniz daily. “An alternative road will be built, but temporary parking arrangements are needed to ease traffic until the new road is completed,” he said.

Responding to the proposal, Sarıhan confirmed that preparations for the 3,450-metre Ölüdeniz alternative road are nearly finished and stressed that it would be ready in time for the 2026 season. “We are aware of the traffic challenges in Fethiye and Ölüdeniz,” he said. “Public authorities and local government must work together on urban planning. We will convey your requests to the relevant parties.”

The meeting highlighted both immediate and long-term strategies to improve traffic flow in one of Turkey’s most visited summer destinations.

Lost Ottoman Ship Found Off Datça, Muğla

Datça, Muğla, Turkey – A long-lost Ottoman ship, which was hit in a skirmish off the coast of Datça and had previously washed ashore and caught fire, has been discovered during underwater excavations.

Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced the findings, highlighting the historical significance of the shipwreck. “More than 30 rifles, over 50 humbaras, thousands of bullets, and the largest collection of pipes from the Ottoman period were found in the first and only 17th-century Ottoman shipwreck excavated in Turkey,” he said.

The artifacts were uncovered this year during the Kızlan Ottoman Shipwreck Underwater Excavation, part of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s Heritage for the Future project. The excavation, conducted off the coast of Datça under the direction of Prof. Dr. Harun Özdaş with assistance from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nilhan Kızldağ, has revealed numerous items from Turkey’s underwater archaeological heritage.

Minister Ersoy emphasised the importance of the discovery, describing it as one of the most remarkable finds in global underwater archaeology. In a social media post, he said: “We are following the traces of our ancestors not only on land but also at sea. With our Ministry’s ‘Heritage to the Future Project,’ we are preserving our unique heritage and passing it on to future generations. The Kızlan Ottoman Shipwreck recently unearthed weapons, porcelain, chess sets, and unique artifacts that shed light on history. This discovery is the first example that brings Ottoman naval power and trade to the present day and stands as one of the most striking finds not only in Turkey but also in the world.”

The excavation continues, promising further insights into Ottoman maritime history and trade networks.

Dead Fish Wash Ashore in İzmir Bay, Turkey

İzmir, Turkey – İzmir Bay on Turkey’s western coast is once again experiencing mass fish deaths. On Saturday, dead fish appeared along Turan Beach in the Bayraklı district, and today large numbers were observed along Karşıyaka’s shoreline.

Teams from the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality collected and disposed of the fish. The bay’s water has turned green and brown, and the strong odour has left the shoreline largely deserted.

Local residents reported the persistent smell. “There are dead fish everywhere, from large to small. The smell is extremely strong,” said visitor Gökhan Havuz.

Experts attribute the die-off to pollution and rising water temperatures. Professor Ergün Taşkın of Manisa Celal Bayar University said İzmir Bay faces high pressure from urban, industrial, port, domestic, and agricultural activities, causing toxic algal blooms that can kill fish.

Dr. Levent Yurga of Ege University added that bacterial decomposition of dead plankton and marine animals worsens the odour, and that cyanobacteria, diatoms, and dinoflagellates have caused recurring fish deaths.

“Short-term fixes are ineffective. The only long-term solution is to stop pollution at its source,” Yurga said.

Last year, dead fish washed ashore in the same area, prompting investigations and measures to improve water quality.

Prefer to get away from the crowds on holiday? These secluded beach spots could be exactly what you’re looking for…

The natural wonders of Turkey’s Turquoise Coast are hardly a secret. So in high season, when its most popular resorts are bustling and summer parties are in full swing, you might want to escape somewhere quieter for the day, to find a beach or a bar practically to yourself. Here are five fabulous secret beach spots on the Turkish Riviera.

Datça

For a long time, the winding road along the spindly Datça Peninsula was so bad that Datça was practically off limits to all but those with yachts – and that’s precisely why it remains so unspoilt.

It’s still quickest and easiest to get there by sea; just hop on a boat across the bay from Bodrum. But now you can also take the scenic route through olive groves and pine-forested mountains for the 20-odd miles from Marmaris. Charming Old Datça (Eski Datça) has been smartened up in recent years, with chic bars, restaurants and boutique hotels – and the coast has beautiful bays. One of the loveliest is Ovabükü, set against a verdant backdrop.

Selimiye

The most rustic of the resorts on the Bozburun peninsula west of Marmaris has no large hotels, no themed pubs and no grip on the 21st century.

The former fishing village is on a mirror calm bay, a ribbon of crusty terracotta roofs on dusty lanes. Nightlife means a glass of aniseed raki after whichever fish restaurant took your fancy, then a moonlit stroll to bed. If you are looking to do nothing more pressing than rise late, sunbathe on dreamy beaches (Kumlubük is the region’s best), read and eat, you’ll fit right in.

Orhaniye

The mellow Bozburun Peninsula, nosing into the blue where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean, is a corner of Turkey that is somehow overlooked, though it’s not far from Marmaris and Bodrum.

It was made for seafarers, with its sleepy fishing villages and gulet-building yards and its calm, beautiful bays. Swim at Orhaniye, a gorgeous bay of sapphire blue with a curious sand spit just below the surface, where you can walk as though on water. Afterwards, bag yourself a hammock at the back of the beach.

Çıralı

Çıralı could be a whopper. Its two-mile beach is a scimitar of fine shingle wedged between rocky spurs. Ripe for commercialisation, then. But because loggerhead turtles lay their eggs here, development is forbidden – which is why Çıralı today is a mellow family resort that feels more distant than its hour from Antalya. That it’s a dead end helps.

Largely car-free, verdant with citrus and pomegranate trees, Çıralıremains a place to potter: hotel, beach, restaurant, repeat. Magic. The ancients thought so too. They saw the natural flames flickering from rocks as evidence of monsters at nearby Chimaera. At the other end of the beach is ancient Olympos. Unleash your inner Indiana Jones among the ruins.

Kabak

There’s not much to Kabak. Thank heavens for that. While boat taxis ferry day trippers from Fetihye to Butterfly Valley, Kabak, the next cove south, cradled by craggy, pine-cloaked hills, retains a soulful off-the-radar atmosphere: reed-roofed shades on the beach (beautiful, incidentally); a few cafés selling homemade food; some lovely, simple accommodation.

That’s about it. Access is on a dirt road. You could cajole a taxi driver in Ölüdeniz to go. More satisfying is to walk in on the Lycian Way from Butterfly Valley. Over three spirit-soaring hours, crowds fall behind and the scenery takes over. Your reward afterwards? A dip in cerulean seas. Bliss.

Turkey – step into a world of delights

Turkey is a diverse country with stunning beaches, great food, spectacular scenery, ancient history and nightlife to suit all tastes.

Jet2 off to Turkey and step into a world of delights. Take your pick from four destinations—Antalya, Bodrum, Dalaman, or Izmir—and explore the stunning Turquoise Coast. From ancient ruins to bustling marinas and glamorous waterfronts, there’s no shortage of sights and experiences. With excellent value, a wide selection of hotels and restaurants, and a variety of holiday packages to suit every budget, Turkey promises an unforgettable getaway.

Mayor Announces 5-Story Parking Garage, New Bus Terminal, and Alternative Roads

FETHIYE — Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca announced plans to tackle the city’s long-standing parking problem with a new five-story parking garage in the city center. The project, which has received two years of planning approval, will include two underground and three above-ground floors, with a capacity of 1,300–1,500 vehicles.

Karaca said the municipality is coordinating with the Ministry and may secure a loan if needed, noting that the project costs approximately 650 million lira. “We are currently a debt-free municipality, but no matter the cost, we will implement this project,” he said, adding that a 50/50 partnership with the Metropolitan Municipality is planned.

To ease city traffic, the project will also provide free electric vehicles for citizens to travel between the parking garage and local businesses or official institutions. In addition, alternative road projects on the Ölüdeniz and Hisarönü-Kayaköy routes, smart intersections, and a new bus terminal near Çamköy Market are under consideration.

Karaca emphasized that addressing parking is a priority for the city. “This project is essential. After the current public announcement period ends and Ministry approvals are obtained, we will move forward to solve Fethiye’s serious parking problem,” he said.

More than Half of Turkish Households in Lower Socioeconomic Groups, TurkStat Data Show

ANKARA —More than half of Turkey’s households fall into the lower half of the country’s socioeconomic scale, according to a new index released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat).

The index, covering all 26 million households, combines data on education, income and occupation, assigning scores grouped into seven categories from “A+” (highest) to “E” (lowest). Results show that just 1.1% of households rank in the top “A+” group, while 16.7% are in the bottom “E” category. Combined with the adjacent “D” and “C2” groups, 51.8% of households fall into the lower half. Only 12.1% are in the top two categories.

Education carries the greatest weight in the index, yet despite expanded schooling over the past two decades, economic inequality remains entrenched. High inflation and stagnant wages have limited upward mobility, leaving wealth concentrated among a narrow elite.

Geographic divides are stark: nearly 29% of top-tier households are in İstanbul, followed by Ankara and İzmir, while rural districts in Anatolia dominate the lowest categories. Even in major cities, inequality persists — in İzmir, 15% of households are in the bottom group.

The findings underscore structural disparities rather than short-term poverty, with the next update to the SES index due in 2028.

New Vehicle Safety Requirements Introduced in Highway Traffic Regulation

TURKEY — The Highway Traffic Regulation in Turkey has been updated to introduce new safety requirements for vehicles under its scope, the Official Gazette reported. The amendments make it mandatory for affected vehicles to be equipped with a vehicle tracking system, internal and external cameras, a video recording device, and an emergency button.

The implementation schedule depends on the vehicle’s model year. Vehicles from 2023 to 2025 must comply at their first inspection after Jan. 1, 2026. Cars from 2018 to 2022 must meet the requirements at the first inspection after Jan. 1, 2027, while vehicles from 2017 or earlier must comply at the first inspection after Jan. 1, 2028.

A transition period applies to school buses registered between Feb. 18, 2025, and Oct. 1, 2025, which are already equipped with cameras under previous regulations. These buses will not need to meet the new standards until their first inspection after Dec. 31, 2027.

Authorities said the regulation aims to enhance safety, monitoring, and emergency response capabilities in public transport and other regulated vehicles across Turkey, reflecting the country’s commitment to modernizing vehicle safety standards and protecting passengers on its roads.

MUSKİ Strengthens Drinking Water Infrastructure and Cleans Streams in Göcek

Göcek – The Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Water and Sewerage Administration (MUSKİ) teams are carrying out pipeline renewal and stream cleaning works in Göcek, Fethiye, to both secure the drinking water infrastructure and protect the environment in this important tourism centre.

With these infrastructure investments and environmental improvements, Göcek is becoming a healthier and safer place to live. The works, which include both stream cleaning and drinking water line replacement, address long-standing needs in the neighbourhood.

In the Dereboğazı area, MUSKİ teams are relocating the drinking water network line from private land to public space. The previous location had made it difficult to respond quickly to outages, often leading to prolonged disruptions. As part of the project, 200 metres of a 400-metre line have already been relocated.

MUSKİ is also undertaking stream cleaning works across Göcek. In the past three months, 2,100 metres of streams have been cleared, including 1,500 metres in Dereboğazı and 600 metres on Likya Street.

Fethiye Municipal Council Member Fatih Ugan expressed gratitude for the efforts:

“We saw that the metropolitan municipality teams have cleaned the Sırım Stream. Our citizens have been requesting this for a long time. Previously, when the stream was not cleaned, blockages during rainfall would cause flooding in homes and plots of land. This problem has now been solved. Both we and our citizens are very pleased. We thank our Metropolitan Mayor, Ahmet Aras.”

Volkan Öztürk, Head of the Fethiye Sewerage and Rainwater Teams at MUSKİ, added:

“We cleaned 1,500 metres of streams in the Dereboğazı area before winter. This work is done regularly every year to prevent flooding and inundation. We also eliminated complaints about flies and odours. We will continue our work periodically in other neighbourhoods. In line with the instructions of our Metropolitan Mayor, Mr. Ahmet Aras, these efforts will continue throughout the city to protect nature and the environment.”

These works aim to strengthen drinking water security in Göcek while reducing the risk of flooding during heavy rains. With ongoing investments and regular maintenance, MUSKİ continues to support both the residents and the environment of Muğla.

Residents Disturbed by Rehabilitation Work in Fethiye

Fethiye – Rehabilitation works on the Toptaş Stream in the Taşyaka neighbourhood of Muğla’s Fethiye district, carried out by the State Hydraulic Works (DSİ), have caused disruption for local residents and businesses.

The project, managed by the 21st Regional Directorate of DSİ, has reached its final phase and includes cleaning the streambed, rectifying the water channel, and landscaping the surrounding area. While the work aims to improve infrastructure and reduce the risk of flooding, the ongoing activity has created difficulties for the community.

Residents report that dust, soil, and noise from construction vehicles have affected daily life and business operations in the neighbourhood. Many have voiced frustration and are calling for the project to be completed as quickly as possible to reduce further inconvenience.

Despite the disturbances, locals acknowledge the importance of the rehabilitation work for long-term safety and environmental improvement. However, they emphasise the need for faster progress and more effective measures to minimise disruption during the process.

Ölüdeniz Kumburnu in Full Swing for Summer Season

Fethiye – The world-famous Ölüdeniz Kumburnu Beach, located in the Fethiye district of Muğla, is experiencing its busiest period as both local and international tourists continue to flock to the area.

Ölüdeniz Kumburnu Nature Park Operations Manager Burak Ardahan stated that the beach is in the peak of its season, with heavy visitor traffic expected to continue until the end of the month. “We are in the peak season at Kumburnu Beach. The influx of local and foreign tourists, which began in July, is now continuing. We anticipate it will continue until the end of this month. Ölüdeniz Kumburnu, a world-renowned beach attracting both local and foreign tourists, continues to welcome our guests,” he said.

Highlighting the international recognition of Ölüdeniz, Ardahan noted: “Ölüdeniz is a world-renowned brand. It’s a natural wonder featured in all our promotions in Turkey. This is a Blue Flag beach and has been awarded Blue Flag criteria. We maintain these standards and ensure our guests enjoy its use.”

Ardahan underlined that protecting the environment is their priority: “Our cleaning team, which starts in the morning, continues its work throughout the day. After the guests leave, we clean the area and prepare it again for service. We are continuing all our environmental efforts to leave this place for future generations.”

He also appealed to visitors for greater sensitivity: “We kindly request that our guests treat the area with care, leaving it as they found it—or even cleaner—so that future generations may continue to enjoy this natural wonder.”

742 Million TL of Energy Produced from Garbage in Muğla

Muğla – Muğla Metropolitan Municipality, which places great importance on combating climate change, is turning waste into energy through its biomass power plants. By processing household waste, the municipality not only prevents harmful methane emissions but also produces electricity equivalent to the needs of hundreds of thousands of households.

Since the launch of the project, a total of 742 million TL worth of energy has been generated from garbage in Muğla. The municipality underlines that this approach contributes both to environmental protection and to the regional economy by turning waste into a resource.

Officials highlighted that the plants play a key role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, ensuring more sustainable energy production, and leaving a cleaner environment for future generations.

Muğla Metropolitan Municipality continues to invest in renewable and clean energy projects as part of its strategy to fight climate change and build a greener city.

NEXT Sosyal Gains Momentum as Turkey’s Social Media Alternative

Turkey’s new social media platform, NEXT Sosyal, is making waves in the digital world, surpassing one million users and rising to the top of app store rankings within weeks of its launch. Designed to offer a fresh and engaging experience, the platform combines innovative features with a user-friendly interface, quickly attracting both local and international audiences. Analysts say its rapid growth reflects a demand for alternatives in the crowded social media landscape, positioning NEXT Sosyal as one of Turkey’s fastest-growing digital networks.

The platform received a major boost this week when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made his first post on NEXT Sosyal. Quoting a line from poet Erdem Bayazıt’s Soon the Day Will Rise — “A flower sprouted between concrete walls” — Erdoğan asked followers, “Are you ready?” His message was accompanied by the hashtag #We’reStarting and emojis of the Turkish flag, the Earth, and a rocket.

The president’s endorsement provides a symbolic boost for NEXT Sosyal, reinforcing Turkey’s push to promote homegrown digital platforms and highlighting the platform’s growing influence in the country’s online landscape.

Artvin Designated Turkey’s First “Smoke-Free City” in Pilot Project

Turkey has selected its northern province of Artvin as the pilot region for a new “smoke-free city” initiative, part of a broader effort to reduce tobacco use and protect public health.

Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu announced that smoking will be entirely banned in public institutions across Artvin. Residents seeking to quit will receive expanded support, including free medication and access to a strengthened quit-smoking hotline. The program will also strictly regulate e-cigarettes and disposable vapes.

Introduced in 2009, Turkey’s nationwide anti-smoking legislation prohibited tobacco use in enclosed public spaces such as restaurants, cafes, and workplaces. The new city-wide measures aim to build on that framework and could later be implemented in other provinces. Earlier this year, the Ministry of Health launched a nationwide campaign under the theme “Smoke-Free Turkey” to coincide with the 16th anniversary of the tobacco control law.

Professor Dr. Mustafa Aydın, president of the Turkish Anti-Smoking Association, described the initiative as “a historic step for public health.” He highlighted the economic and health burden of tobacco, noting that it costs Turkey an estimated $20 billion annually and contributes to nearly one-tenth of total healthcare spending.

“Smoking is no longer an individual choice but a societal crisis,” Aydın said, warning that tobacco addiction fuels heart disease, cancer, and chronic illnesses. He stressed that raising awareness alongside stricter enforcement is crucial, particularly among youth increasingly targeted by flavored e-cigarettes and online marketing.

Aydın added that Artvin’s role as the first smoke-free city could serve as a model for other provinces:

“If local authorities, civil society, and citizens act together, a smoke-free Turkey is not just a dream but an achievable goal.”

According to a 2023 study, 34.8 percent of Turkey’s population aged 15 and over use tobacco products, and nearly 100,000 people die annually from tobacco-related illnesses in the country.

Clean Fethiye Campaign Expands with Citizen Support

Fethiye – The Clean Fethiye campaign is continuing to gain momentum with strong support from local residents.

A large-scale cleanup operation was carried out on Wednesday along the coastline from Göcek Ayten Bay to Osman Ağa Bay. The initiative aimed to raise awareness of the risks posed by forest fires and to highlight the importance of protecting the region’s natural environment.

In parallel with the cleanup efforts, municipal authorities are conducting inspections through cameras installed at strategic points across the city. Legal proceedings are being initiated against individuals found to be in violation of environmental regulations. Officials reiterated their appeal to the public to help keep Fethiye clean by refraining from littering and by disposing of cigarette butts responsibly.

The municipality extended its thanks to all citizens who took part in today’s campaign, as well as to its dedicated staff. Special appreciation was also expressed to Milliyet Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Özay Şendir and Aegean Region Representative Aslı Öktener for their support.

Important Announcement for Landowners

FETHIYE – The municipality has issued a reminder to all landowners about the dangers posed by uncontrolled weed growth and accumulated waste during the summer months. Such conditions can increase the risk of fire, attract pests, and contribute to environmental pollution.

To ensure safety and cleanliness, landowners are urged to:

  • Secure the surrounding area,
  • Remove weeds, brush, and waste,
  • Carry out regular maintenance.

In accordance with Zoning Law No. 3194, if the required cleaning and maintenance are not completed, the municipality will undertake the work. The total cost will then be billed to the landowner, with an additional 20% surcharge applied.

Municipal officials have called on all residents to take necessary precautions, stressing the shared responsibility for maintaining a cleaner and more organised Fethiye.

Turkey Designates Large Parks as Disaster Assembly Areas Under New Zoning Regulations

ANKARA – Turkey has introduced new regulations enabling large urban parks to serve as disaster assembly areas, the Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Ministry announced this week.

The amendments to the Regulation on Planned Areas Zoning were published in the Official Gazette on Wednesday and have now taken effect. The changes apply particularly to parks, child daycare centres, health facilities, and disaster response zones.

Under the new rules, parks larger than 5,000 square metres (50,000 square feet) can now be equipped with underground sewer, mechanical, electrical and communication infrastructure to support emergency operations. Fire hydrants will be installed where deemed necessary by local fire departments, and procedures have been established for building helicopter landing zones. In addition, high-density park areas may also host public health facilities.

The regulation also introduces new requirements for large-scale developments. Mixed-use projects exceeding 25,000 square metres or 250 units must include standalone family health centres, while those larger than 15,000 square metres or 150 units must provide dedicated daycare centres for children up to 66 months old, offering education, development, care, protection and nutrition services.

To modernise existing communities, the regulation further facilitates renovations on parcels without current zoning plans, allowing for the upgrading of older buildings in unplanned areas.

Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum highlighted the broader vision of the reforms on Turkey-based social media platform Next Social, stating:

“We are strengthening our parks with new features alongside playgrounds. Parks over 5,000 square metres will be equipped to serve as assembly areas during disasters and emergencies. Our updated zoning regulation, developed with the General Directorate of Professional Services, introduces innovations for child daycare centres, health facilities and disaster response areas.”

Wildfire Risk Could Persist Into September, Expert Warns

ISTANBUL – The risk of wildfires in Turkey may continue into September due to persistent heat, drought and a lack of rainfall, a leading climate change expert has warned.

Murat Türkeş, a board member of Boğaziçi University’s Climate Change and Policy Research Center, said August’s extreme conditions showed no signs of easing.

“August is already dangerous in terms of wildfire risk, but if the expected rains in the coming month do not arrive, this year’s wildfire threat could extend into September,” Türkeş cautioned.

Across Turkey, soaring temperatures, low humidity and strong winds have created highly combustible conditions, particularly in the Aegean, Mediterranean and Marmara regions. Türkeş explained that the summer of 2025 began hotter and drier than usual, placing these zones at elevated fire risk.

July saw record-breaking heat, followed by August’s “Eyyam-ı Bahur,” the year’s hottest and most humid period. Despite occasional humidity, the return of hot, dry northerly poyraz winds has left regions such as Marmara, the Western Black Sea, Northwestern Central Anatolia and the Northern Aegean up to 3–4°C warmer than normal.

“These conditions, coupled with high winds, are ideal for igniting and spreading wildfires, particularly in the western provinces of Çanakkale, Balıkesir, Manisa, İzmir and Muğla,” Türkeş said. He noted that no significant rainfall is expected through the end of August, while forecasts for September and October point to warmer and drier-than-average weather.

“Given these forecasts, we have to consider September a fire-risk month this year,” he added, calling for restrictions on outdoor fires, including picnics, until at least October.

The warning comes as multiple wildfires continue to burn across the country. In Mersin’s Silifke district, blazes that broke out at three points have entered their third day, prompting the evacuation of nearly 1,900 residents from six neighbourhoods. In Anamur, a second major fire continued into its second day, forcing the evacuation of the Kuyubaşı neighbourhood.

Elsewhere, fires remain active in Hatay’s Hassa and Yayladağı districts. A blaze in Antakya’s Narlıca neighbourhood was brought under control within an hour, with cooling operations ongoing as of August 15.

The New Eye of the Police: Camera Inspection Vehicles

MUĞLA – Muğla Metropolitan Municipality has ushered in a new era in police inspections with the launch of its Mobile Vehicle Camera Inspection System.

The system equips municipal police vehicles with 360-degree cameras, enabling teams to record inspections in real time while on patrol. This new technology complements the existing body cameras already in use by officers, enhancing transparency, accountability, and efficiency in municipal policing.

Officials say the initiative will allow for more accurate documentation of incidents, strengthen evidence gathering, and provide an additional layer of safety for both the public and the police.

Traffic Queues Stretch from Ovacık to Ölüdeniz in Summer Rush

FETHİYE, MUĞLA – The summer season in Ölüdeniz, Fethiye’s world-renowned tourist destination, has once again brought heavy traffic congestion to the area.

A surge of vehicles from both local and international tourists visiting for their holidays led to long queues, with traffic stretching this time from Ovacık all the way to Ölüdeniz.

Drivers were forced to endure long waits in slow-moving traffic under scorching heat. Local shopkeepers noted that while the congestion indicates a healthy tourism season, permanent solutions are needed for parking and traffic management to prevent recurring bottlenecks.

Tourism Down 60% at Fethiye’s Tuesday Market, Say Vendors

FETHİYE, MUĞLA – Vendors at Fethiye’s well-known Tuesday market have reported lower sales and a 60% drop in tourism activity compared to last year, citing reduced spending by visitors.

Market vendor Süleyman Korkmaz said that customer traffic at the market has not translated into higher sales. He noted that business levels are below those of previous seasons and that rising costs are affecting both vendors and customers.

Vendor Osman Şanal, who has worked in the market for 30 years, stated that sales have decreased significantly. He said that while purchase prices for goods have increased, customers are less willing to buy due to higher retail prices.

Another vendor, Sezgin Gürgün, said there had been little activity in the market over the past three months, with a recent increase in visitors mainly due to domestic tourism. He added that some vendors have lowered prices to cost level in an attempt to attract customers.

Fethiye’s Maritime Industry Faces Challenges Amid Shipyard Expansion Plans

FETHİYE, MUĞLA – Cengiz Balaban, a maritime professional with 40 years of experience in Fethiye, shared his views on the new shipyard project planned for Karaot Beach, stressing the urgent need for improved infrastructure to support the growing sector.

Balaban welcomed the proposal to relocate the shipyard but underscored that port infrastructure must be established before the move. “We support the relocation decision, but boats cannot be accommodated in a place without a port. Locating the shipyard within a port offers safety and environmental benefits,” he said.

Highlighting the rapid growth of Fethiye’s maritime industry, Balaban noted that existing facilities are insufficient to meet demand. He pointed out Turkey’s leading role in wooden boat manufacturing, with vessels from Bodrum and Marmaris frequently requiring construction and maintenance services in Fethiye.

He explained that the current shipyard’s limited space and the heavy traffic, especially during summer, impede operations. “Traffic becomes much heavier with the influx of vacationers. Moving boats that are 30 to 40 meters long can take 15 to 20 minutes, which tests visitors’ patience,” Balaban said.

Balaban proposed building new docks and landfills for day-trip boats to alleviate congestion. He also stressed the need for safe harbours accessible to larger vessels by opening up to the open sea, given the low and shallow sea levels in the region.

Regarding the Karaot shipyard project, Balaban reiterated the importance of port infrastructure: “Even if relocation is decided, the port must be constructed first to accommodate boats safely. A shipyard within a port ensures marine safety and cleanliness.”

He further emphasized the necessity of professional marinas equipped with electricity, water, and fire systems. “There have been fires in illegal marinas without proper response options. Marina infrastructure is essential for safety. Waste collection systems are also crucial for environmental protection,” Balaban said.

Balaban suggested that the entire coastline of Fethiye be developed into marinas operated under unified management, offering essential services such as water, electricity, and fire safety, along with round-the-clock emergency personnel.

Stressing the maritime sector’s importance to Fethiye’s economy, Balaban said, “Many professions rely on the shipyard—from electricians and hardware stores to restaurant owners and minibus drivers. The maritime sector is a key economic resource for Fethiye.”

Climate Change Drives More Intense Summer Floods, Experts Urge Urban Infrastructure Overhaul

Intense summer floods, fueled by increasingly frequent heavy rains, are emerging as a significant global concern amid shifting climate patterns. Professor Murat Türkeş of Boğaziçi University’s Climate Change and Policy Implementation and Research Center highlighted the urgent need to redesign urban infrastructure to manage these growing risks.

Such floods occur when heavy downpours fall on dry ground, causing rapid runoff and widespread damage. The catastrophic 2021 flood in Kastamonu’s Bozkurt district exemplifies the consequences of disregarding natural landscapes in urban planning. Factors like deforestation, destruction of old riverbeds, and unregulated development worsen flooding impacts.

Rising temperatures increase atmospheric moisture, creating conditions for severe storms and heavy rainfall, leading to floods, landslides, and waterlogging. Regions in Turkey including the Black Sea area, Anatolia, and others are particularly vulnerable.

Rainfall events once expected only once in centuries are now more frequent, challenging even well-managed river systems in Europe. Türkeş calls for comprehensive reforms: urban drainage tailored to local geography, protection of floodplains, and removal of settlements in high-risk areas are crucial to mitigate future disasters.

Experts stress that adapting urban planning and infrastructure is essential for resilient communities amid intensifying climate impacts.

Mountains of Garbage Form in Kemalpaşa, İzmir, Sparking Pollution Concerns

KEMALPAŞA, İZMİR – The Kemalpaşa district of İzmir is grappling with growing environmental and health concerns as large piles of household waste have been dumped on a vacant lot, forming a mountain of garbage. Aerial footage captured the alarming scale of the accumulation.

The waste, collected by the municipality, was deposited on this vacant land because the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality has been unable to transport it to designated disposal sites.

Local residents have complained about increasing foul odors and fly infestations as the hot weather worsens, intensifying concerns over pollution and public health risks.

Kemalpaşa Mayor Mehmet Türkmen commented, “There is no possibility of garbage accumulation in our district. The current delay is due to the garbage transfer vehicles being moved to a more distant location.”

Despite official statements, the aerial images reveal a significant heap of garbage, underlining the urgent need for action.

“Clean Fethiye” Campaign Continues with Community Support

FETHIYE, MUĞLA — The “Clean Fethiye” campaign, launched by Fethiye Municipality to combat environmental pollution and promote civic responsibility, continues with determination and growing support from local neighbourhood headmen (muhtars) and residents.

One of the latest sites targeted in the campaign is Huzurevi Tepesi in the Foça neighbourhood, where accumulated litter has drawn concern from both officials and citizens. The municipality has described the condition of the area as “unbecoming of Fethiye”, vowing swift action.

Municipal teams, in coordination with neighbourhood representatives and volunteers, have mobilised clean-up efforts to restore the area and raise awareness about environmental responsibility.

“We will fight together to restore this beautiful city to the cleanliness it deserves,” a municipal spokesperson said, encouraging residents to take an active role in keeping their surroundings clean.

The “Clean Fethiye” initiative has gained momentum since its launch, with a focus on public engagement, increased inspections, and enforcement of anti-littering regulations. Authorities continue to call on all citizens to report illegal dumping and to help protect the natural beauty of Fethiye.

Citizens Support Fethiye Municipality’s Photo Trap App to Tackle Pollution

FETHIYE, MUĞLA — A new initiative by the Fethiye Municipality aimed at curbing environmental pollution is receiving strong backing from local residents. The municipality’s recently launched “photo trap” app, developed as part of its “Clean Fethiye” campaign, identifies individuals who litter in public spaces and applies penalties accordingly.

The app uses strategically placed photo traps in high-traffic natural areas such as beaches, parks, and picnic sites to monitor and record environmental violations. Offenders caught discarding waste—from bottles and cans to gas cylinders—are subject to fines as part of the municipality’s broader effort to protect the district’s natural beauty.

Local residents and business owners have voiced strong support for the programme. Market vendor Bilal Göksu called the initiative long overdue, commenting, “They were throwing waste from gas cylinders, bottles, and garbage into the environment. Our people are indifferent; they eat, drink, and throw their garbage wherever they find it. They should be fined.”

Göksu stressed the importance of early education in shaping responsible behaviour. “Families should raise their children in a manner so they learn not to throw things away. Because they don’t do it, they throw things away left and right. But we’re trying to solve this with these kinds of practices.”

Kemal Yılmaz, another local shopkeeper, applauded the municipality’s proactive stance. “This is a very good practice. Our people are truly indifferent about cleanliness. Our municipality has identified these issues and taken appropriate action. We expect our people to be more sensitive.”

Fethiye Municipality has announced that it will continue to expand its photo trap coverage and tighten enforcement, with the goal of fostering a cleaner, greener, and more responsible community.

Significant Call for Bicycle Awareness in Fethiye

FETHIYE, MUĞLA — A powerful message for cyclist safety and visibility has been delivered in Fethiye following the tragic deaths of two cyclists last year. Özgür Alkan (47) and İlker Muallim lost their lives in a traffic accident in the Göcek neighbourhood, reigniting public concern over the dangers faced by cyclists and their often-overlooked presence on the roads.

To raise awareness, Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca parachuted from the 1,700-metre summit of Babadağ Mountain, unveiling a banner mid-flight that read: “The right lane is a cyclist’s legal right.” The banner underscored the message that cyclists have a rightful and protected place on the roads, especially in the far-right traffic lane.

Landing on Ölüdeniz Beach, Mayor Karaca addressed the crowd:

“Cyclists are not invisible in traffic; they too have the right to life. Cyclists have the right to use the far right lane. We must both remind them of this right and uphold it.”

At Belcekız Beach, the family of Özgür Alkan joined the event and unfurled a banner of their own:

“We demand justice for Özgür Alkan and İlker Muallim.”

Their presence added emotional weight to the campaign and renewed calls for increased safety and accountability.

The event coincides with ongoing efforts by the “Safe Pedals Working Group,” formed under the Fethiye City Council in June. The group aims to shift perceptions of bicycles as merely recreational tools to their broader role as eco-friendly and practical transport alternatives. Their inaugural event, a “Silent Ride” on June 29th, drew attention to the need for respect and infrastructure for cyclists on Fethiye’s roads.

Mayor Karaca reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to sustainable and people-friendly urban planning:

“As the local government, we fully support the integration of bicycles into daily life, in line with our vision of creating environmentally friendly and livable cities.”

To further the momentum, Karaca invited all cycling enthusiasts to a public cycling event on Thursday, August 7th at 1:30 PM, starting from the Fethiye Cultural Center and concluding at the Courthouse. The ride aims to unite citizens in solidarity and demand safer conditions for all cyclists across the district.

Fethiye Municipality Provides Aid to Fire Victim in Seydikemer

FETHIYE, MUĞLA — Fethiye Municipality has provided emergency assistance to a resident whose home was destroyed in a fire in the Seydikemer district. Following the incident, municipal teams delivered essential household items to help meet the immediate needs of the affected citizen.

According to a statement from Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca, the support included the provision of necessary supplies to assist with the recovery process.

“We delivered all the necessary items to a citizen whose home burned down in Seydikemer,” said Karaca. “We will continue to support our citizens during difficult times and strengthen our efforts in solidarity.”

The municipality’s intervention is part of its broader commitment to providing emergency relief and social assistance to residents in crisis situations.

Fethiye Wrestling Team Rises from Success to Success

FETHIYE, MUĞLA —The Fethiye District Youth and Sports Directorate Wrestling Team has enjoyed a standout season, earning national recognition through consistent success in major wrestling competitions across Turkey. Guided by Head Coach Kürşat Çimen, the team has brought home multiple medals from events such as the Turkish Championships in Sivas, where seven athletes reached the podium and three were crowned champions. At the prestigious 664th Historical Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling Festival, the team made history by being the only representatives from Muğla to win a medal, with young wrestler Yusuf Ziya Ataçocuğu securing second place in the Mini-2 category.

Their momentum continued with a second-place team finish at the Anatolian Stars League freestyle wrestling group competition in Uşak—just five points short of first place—and additional medals at the Alanya Gökbel Wrestling Competition and the Karakucak Turkish Championship. The team is now preparing for upcoming regional events, including the Seki Wrestling Festival and Elmalı Wrestling, which will mark the end of their competitive season.

Fethiye District Youth and Sports Director Harun Reşit Yiğit expressed pride in the team’s achievements, emphasising wrestling as one of the region’s most successful sports branches. He commended both the athletes and Coach Çimen for their discipline and commitment and acknowledged the support of Seydikemer Mayor Önder Akdenizli for his financial and moral backing. Yiğit also reiterated the Directorate’s broader mission to promote sports at grassroots level and ensure continued success in multiple disciplines across Fethiye.

Turkey Moves to Curb Overtourism in Cappadocia with New Protection Measures

CAPPADOCIA, NEVŞEHİR — Turkish authorities have announced a sweeping new set of regulations aimed at safeguarding the unique cultural and natural heritage of Cappadocia, one of the country’s most iconic tourist destinations, from the growing pressures of overtourism.

Located in central Turkey’s Nevşehir province, Cappadocia attracts millions of visitors each year with its otherworldly fairy chimneys, ancient rock-carved churches, and world-famous hot air balloon rides. In 2024 alone, the region hosted 4.5 million domestic and international tourists. In the first five months of 2025, it had already welcomed 1.6 million visitors.

While most of Cappadocia is officially classified as a protected site—comprising natural landscapes, archaeological zones, historic monuments, and urban conservation areas—its soaring popularity has brought mounting challenges. These include illegal construction, environmental damage, and deterioration of archaeological heritage.

In response, the regional heritage authority under the Culture and Tourism Ministry has launched a new action plan to better regulate tourism and protect the site’s fragile ecosystem and historical integrity.

Key Measures:

  • Stricter regulation of tours: Popular activities such as ATV safaris, jeep tours, and horseback riding excursions will now be confined to designated routes. GPS monitoring will soon be mandatory for all ATV and UTV vehicles to prevent off-route travel.
  • Hefty fines and license revocation: Operators who breach these restrictions will face a fine of 92,000 Turkish Liras (approx. $2,261) for a first offense. Repeat violations will result in the revocation of operating licenses, according to Cem Aslanbay, head of the authority overseeing the region.
  • Horse tours: A similar regulatory framework is currently being developed for horseback riding tours.

Tackling Illegal Construction:

Illegal development has significantly altered parts of the Cappadocian landscape in recent years. Since 2019, more than 1,000 unauthorized structures have been demolished, Aslanbay reported. Education and awareness programmes aimed at local residents are underway, with many now voluntarily dismantling illegal buildings after gaining a better understanding of the importance of preservation.

Ongoing Issues:

Authorities also face challenges with vandalism, particularly graffiti carved into the region’s fragile fairy chimneys. Efforts are ongoing to monitor and reduce such damage through increased surveillance and public awareness campaigns.

The comprehensive action plan marks a renewed push to balance tourism with preservation, ensuring that Cappadocia’s iconic landscapes and historical treasures remain intact for future generations.

Drought Reveals Old İzmir-Çeşme Highway as Alaçatı Dam Water Levels Plummet

ÇEŞME, İZMİR — Severe drought conditions and rising summer water demand have drastically lowered water levels at the Alaçatı Kutlu Aktaş Dam in İzmir’s Çeşme district, revealing a long-submerged section of the old İzmir-Çeşme highway.

The Alaçatı Kutlu Aktaş Dam, a key water source for the popular Aegean tourism hub, has seen a sharp drop in capacity over the past year. According to figures released by the İzmir Water and Sewage Administration (İZSU), the dam’s occupancy rate, which stood at 22.39% on August 1, 2024, has fallen to just 3.13% as of August 1, 2025.

As water levels receded, the former İzmir-Çeşme road—submerged since the dam’s construction—resurfaced and can now be crossed on foot. The exposed roadway has drawn attention and was recently documented with drone footage.

In response to the critical drop in the dam’s water levels, İZSU implemented daily water cuts in Çeşme between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. beginning July 25. With no improvement in conditions, the duration of the nightly cuts was extended to 10 hours on July 31.

The extended interruptions have led to a surge in demand for household water storage tanks as residents seek ways to cope with the reduced water availability.

İzmir, governed by the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), continues to face persistent urban challenges including traffic congestion, infrastructure limitations, and increasingly frequent water shortages—issues that have become a growing source of frustration among residents, particularly during the peak tourism season.

Restoration Nears Completion at 2,200-Year-Old Assos Theater in Turkey

The restoration of the ancient theater in Assos, a 2,200-year-old archaeological site in western Turkey’s Çanakkale province, is nearing completion. Located in Behramkale village in the Ayvacık district, Assos was once a major port city and a renowned centre of philosophy and science in antiquity.

Perched on a volcanic hillside overlooking the Aegean Sea and the island of Lesbos, Assos is best known as the city where Aristotle founded a school and conducted groundbreaking studies in zoology and botany. The city, surrounded by well-preserved walls and towers, features notable structures such as a bouleuterion (council house), agora, gymnasium, necropolis, and the Temple of Athena—one of the oldest Doric temples in Anatolia.

The theater, built into a natural slope south of the agora, dates back to the late 4th century BCE and was later adapted during the Roman era for gladiator and animal combat. It originally featured a horseshoe-shaped seating plan, a two-story stage (proskenion), and designated seating areas for various trade guilds and religious groups. Some conservation efforts were undertaken in the 1990s.

According to excavation director Prof. Nurettin Arslan, the theater’s full restoration—pending final approvals—will allow it to host concerts and theatrical performances during the summer. The project is expected to make Assos one of the most important cultural and touristic destinations in the region, promoting sustainable heritage tourism.

Excavations at the site have been ongoing since 1981, with the current season marking the 44th year of research. Assos was also the first ancient city in Turkey excavated by American archaeologists in the 19th century.

Wool carpets age under sun in southern Turkey’s Antalya

Antalya, Turkey– On the sun-baked plains of southern Turkey, the outskirts of Antalya come alive each summer with a vibrant mosaic of handwoven carpets and kilims, laid out across harvested fields in a centuries-old tradition that is slowly fading.

From June to September, the Döşemealtı district becomes an open-air carpet aging ground, as merchants from across the country bring thousands of wool rugs to be treated under the Mediterranean sun. The natural process—used to soften dyes, eliminate moisture and odours, and enhance colour tones—transforms empty farmlands into what looks like a vast patchwork quilt.

The tradition is carried on by a dwindling number of practitioners. Among them is Hasan Topkara, a veteran carpet dealer who now oversees the care of some 15,000 carpets spread across a 40-hectare (100-acre) site. In past decades, he says, as many as 60,000 carpets would be processed in a single season.

Each rug is meticulously washed, inspected, and laid out to sun-dry for up to three months. A team of 50 workers continuously turns and monitors them, while another 100 villagers remain on alert to help quickly gather the carpets at the first sign of rain. The entire collection must be sheltered within 45 minutes to prevent water damage—then laid out again once the weather clears.

The wool, dyed with natural vegetable colours, responds to the sun’s intensity and the rhythm of the day—fading into soft, pastel tones that signal readiness. Once aged, many of the rugs are shipped to Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar and exported to international buyers.

Over time, the drying fields have also become an unexpected tourist attraction. The site gained national attention in 2018 when Turkish pop artist Mabel Matiz filmed his music video “Sarmaşık” among the carpets, drawing interest from visitors intrigued by the blend of craftsmanship and landscape.

“This work is not just trade, it’s tradition,” said Topkara. “It’s part of our culture and our history.”

As the number of carpet processors continues to decline, the colourful fields of Döşemealtı stand as a rare and fading symbol of Turkey’s rich textile heritage, where artistry meets the elements in one of the country’s most vivid and enduring summer scenes.

Welcome to our midweek round-up of the latest news and updates from Fethiye and across Turkey.

Curated from various news sources

Loggerhead turtle rescued from fishing line entanglement in Fethiye

A loggerhead sea turtle entangled in fishing line was rescued by firefighters in the Fethiye district of Muğla, Turkey, and safely released back into the wild, officials confirmed.

The turtle was spotted in distress in a canal in the Tuzla neighbourhood, where it had become ensnared in fishing line. Concerned residents who witnessed the incident promptly alerted authorities.

Firefighters from the local emergency services responded quickly. Using a ladder to access the canal, they were able to carefully free the turtle from the entanglement.

Following a health check, the loggerhead turtle was deemed fit for release and was returned to its natural habitat.

Loggerhead turtles are a protected species in Turkey, and incidents like this highlight the ongoing threats marine life faces due to human activity, including improperly discarded fishing gear. Authorities continue to urge the public to act responsibly and report wildlife in distress.

Fethiye Municipality Cleans Up Yeşil Vadi

Fethiye Municipality has carried out a thorough cleanup of the Yeşil Vadi recreation area in the Yanıklar neighbourhood, following growing concern over garbage accumulation in the popular natural spot.

The area, known for its cool waters and natural beauty, draws crowds during the summer months but was recently highlighted on social media for being littered with plastic, glass, and household waste.

In response, municipal cleaning teams were dispatched to the site, where they collected large volumes of waste and restored the area to a clean and welcoming state.

Municipal officials called on the public to show greater care for nature and the environment, reminding residents that littering is subject to administrative fines.

Protecting natural spaces like Yeşil Vadi is a shared responsibility, officials said, urging visitors to dispose of their waste properly and help preserve the beauty of the region for future generations.

Fethiye Municipality Fines 300 People in Crackdown on Environmental Pollution

Fethiye Municipality has taken firm action against environmental pollution, issuing administrative fines to 300 individuals for littering cigarette butts, garbage, and other waste in public areas. The initiative is part of a broader effort to curb pollution, particularly during the busy summer season.

Mahmut Bayraktar, Director of the Municipality’s Cleaning Services, announced that the fines were issued following comprehensive inspections supported by camera traps placed across the district. “The recent rise in pollution, especially in the summer months, required immediate action,” he said.

Bayraktar noted that while the municipality’s priority is not to penalise, enforcement has become necessary.

“Our goal is not to issue fines, but to protect the environment. Unfortunately, some citizens only begin to comply with the rules through fines. However, we aim to raise awareness and encourage voluntary participation.”

The fine for discarding cigarette butts is currently 2,953 TL, while fines for littering in gardens can range between 10,000 TL and 159,000 TL, depending on the scale and impact of the offence.

Bayraktar also highlighted a serious fire risk associated with littering, especially the improper disposal of glass bottles.

“Glass bottles can act like lenses and cause fires by reflecting sunlight. This is particularly dangerous in forested and high-risk areas like the Peninsula. We urge citizens to be more mindful.”

Fethiye Municipality plans to continue both enforcement and public education efforts to promote cleaner, safer public spaces.

Muğla Forests on 24-Hour Watch

Muğla, one of Turkey’s most forested provinces with 67 percent forest coverage, remains under constant threat of wildfires. To prevent outbreaks, the Muğla Governor’s Office continues to issue warnings through audio announcements, visual media, and social media platforms. Gendarmerie and forestry teams are conducting 24-hour patrols in fire-prone areas across the province.

Despite a ban on entering forested zones, which is part of a broader set of fire prevention measures, teams from the Gendarmerie and the Muğla Regional Directorate of Forestry maintain ongoing surveillance. Joint patrols are equipped with binoculars to monitor the landscape, and teams are actively issuing on-the-spot warnings to citizens.

In a recent public notice, the Muğla Governor’s Office urged residents to remain vigilant, stating, “Together, we can extinguish fires. And before they even start. To protect our green homeland during this critical period: Do not burn stubble, do not throw cigarette butts on the ground, do not light fires in open areas, and do not leave glass bottles in nature. Remember, 86 percent of forest fires are caused by human activity. A moment of carelessness could lead to disaster.”

Authorities continue to emphasise that preventing wildfires is a shared responsibility and are calling on all citizens to follow the safety rules.

Forest Volunteer Motorized Patrol Team on High Alert in Fethiye

As forest fires continue to threaten various parts of Turkey, a motorized forest volunteer patrol team in Fethiye has stepped up efforts to prevent outbreaks and protect the region’s natural areas. The team, made up of 15 trained volunteers, is patrolling key forested areas day and night, warning residents and tourists about fire risks.

The patrol team consists of licensed athletes from Fethiye Ormanspor and members of the Turkish Motorcycle Federation, all of whom have undergone official training. Their patrol routes include the peninsula of Fethiye, Kayaköy, Darboğaz, Ovacık Hisarönü, Ölüdeniz, Babadağ, and Faralya. The team provides logistics, supply assistance, and support during periods of high fire risk, while also serving as an emergency response unit.

National athlete Serkan Özdemir is among the volunteers involved in the initiative. The team actively engages with locals and visitors, urging them not to light picnic fires or burn stubble, both of which are known causes of wildfires. As part of their efforts, they place water-filled canisters at strategic points along the roadsides to help ensure a rapid response if a fire does break out.

The Forest Volunteers motorized patrol team operates on a daily schedule, covering large stretches of forest across Fethiye. Their proactive work has been widely praised by residents, who view the initiative as an important measure in protecting the region’s environment and public safety.

Missing British Tourist Found Dead After Three-Day Search in Muğla

Joseph Alexander Gıffor, a 79-year-old British national who went missing on 26 July in the Dalyan neighbourhood of Ortaca, has been found dead in the Çandır neighbourhood of nearby Köyceğiz following an extensive three-day search operation.

Mr Gıffor, who was visiting the region on holiday, had set out alone by boat on the morning of 26 July to explore the historic Kaunos rock tombs via the Dalyan Canal. After reportedly crossing to Çandır, he was not seen or heard from again.

His disappearance prompted immediate concern when his daughter alerted the 112 Emergency Call Centre. In response, search efforts were launched by teams from Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the Gendarmerie, and several local non-governmental search and rescue organisations.

After three days of intensive searching across the area, Mr Gıffor’s body was discovered in the Çandır neighbourhood of Köyceğiz. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Local officials expressed their condolences to Mr Gıffor’s family, and arrangements are now being made to repatriate his body to the UK.

Ancient Statue of Marcus Aurelius Returned to Turkey After 65 Years

An ancient bronze statue believed to depict Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius has been returned to Turkey from the United States, 65 years after it was illegally smuggled out of the country, Turkish authorities announced on Saturday.

The statue, looted in the 1960s from the ancient city of Boubon, located in present-day Burdur Province in southwestern Turkey, was repatriated following close cooperation between Turkish and US authorities.

Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Ersoy hailed the return as a major victory, stating:

“It was a long struggle. We were right, we were determined, we were patient, and we won. We brought the ‘Philosopher Emperor’ Marcus Aurelius back to the land where he belongs.”

The statue had most recently been on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art between April and July. According to Ersoy, its return was secured through a combination of scientific analysis, archival research, and witness testimony.

Ersoy praised the collaboration with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and US Homeland Security Investigations, describing the effort as a historic success.

“Through the combined power of diplomacy, law and science, the process we conducted is more than just a repatriation; it is a historic achievement,” he said.

The return of the statue is part of Turkey’s broader initiative to recover its cultural heritage, particularly artefacts that were illicitly taken from the country in past decades.

Minister Ersoy announced that the statue will soon be presented to the public in Ankara through a special exhibition, details of which are to be revealed soon.
