A renowned salt cave, located 150 meters underground in the Central Anatolian province of Çankırı and dating back to the Hittite period, is being transformed into a health tourism destination for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Local authorities have launched an initiative allowing COPD patients to benefit from the cave’s naturally healing salt air through soothing sessions.

As part of the 15-day program, professionals and volunteers will lead social, cultural, and health activities in the cave, known as Türkiye’s largest rock salt reserve. Activities will include pottery, marbling workshops, music, theater, and physical exercises.

“The Underground Salt City will become a key location for health tourism,” said Governor Mustafa Fırat Taşolar during the project’s launch ceremony. The first session will run from September 24 to October 8, free of charge.

Fishermen in the Aegean Sea are raising alarms over a sharp decline in fish stocks in the Gulf of İzmir, blaming increasing pollution levels for the drop. Local reports indicate that the number and variety of fish caught between September 1-15 this year have halved compared to the same period in 2023. Approximately 60-70% of the fishermen’s catch is now being diverted to fish farms to be used as feed, a stark change from prior years.

The fishing season in the Aegean Sea reopened on September 1 following the end of the annual hunting ban. However, what should have been a period of abundance turned into disappointment, with fishermen struggling to catch enough fish to support their livelihoods. Many have expressed concerns about their ability to break even.

Mehmet Aksoy, head of a fishermen’s association in İzmir, confirmed the distressing situation. “We have 50 large boats under our association, but the low yields are making it impossible to cover costs,” Aksoy said. He noted that vessels operating near Kuşadası are bringing in only around 100 cases of anchovies per trip, far below market demand and barely enough to offset expenses.

Environmental changes are exacerbating the problem. Rising sea temperatures are forcing fish to migrate to deeper waters, which affects the reproduction of smaller species. The warmer water also leads to oxygen depletion, a significant factor in recent fish die-offs in the inner Gulf of İzmir.

The fish deaths, first observed on August 20, led to a temporary ban on fishing in the inner gulf. Authorities ruled out poisoning as the cause, instead pointing to oxygen depletion. Several fish markets have since ceased purchasing from the affected areas.

Aksoy also addressed public concerns, especially after rumors linked fish die-offs in the Black Sea province of Rize to İzmir’s catch. “We want to reassure the public that we are handling dead fish responsibly and not discarding them into the sea,” Aksoy emphasized.

Despite the struggles, fishermen remain hopeful for better weather and improved conditions, as they continue to monitor the situation closely.

In Türkiye’s northeastern Arhavi district, heavy rainfall has triggered severe flooding and landslides, causing a section of the main asphalt road connecting the town center to surrounding villages and highlands to collapse. The rising Kapisre Stream intensified the flooding, leading to the collapse of the Ortancalar highway, which serves 17 villages. Repair work is now underway, with teams working to stabilize the road running parallel to the stream.

The downpour, which began in the evening, flooded streets in Arhavi, disrupting daily life and causing significant challenges for both drivers and pedestrians. The increased water levels in the Kapisre Stream, which flows through the town center, prompted authorities to implement safety measures.

In Hopa’s Sundura neighborhood, a 56-year-old woman who was stranded while picking tea was successfully rescued by teams from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and Hopa Search and Rescue.

The flooding and landslides have forced the closure of 32 village roads across the region—18 in Arhavi, 8 in Borçka, and 6 in Hopa. Provincial teams, including the Special Administration, Highways, and the State Hydraulic Works General Directorate (DSI), are actively working to clear and reopen the affected roads.

Governor and Mayor Provide Updates on Recovery Efforts

Artvin Governor Cengiz Ünsal has been conducting inspections in the hardest-hit areas of Arhavi and Hopa. A key section of Kale Mahallesi Mehmet Nazif Günal Street, which connects the town to nearby villages and highlands, collapsed after 174 kilograms of rain per square meter fell in the area.

Arhavi Mayor Turgay Ataselim reported that official data recorded 198 kilograms of rain per square meter, describing the situation as a disaster. “Thanks to the State Hydraulic Works, we have managed to address potential risks. Our village roads have sustained significant damage, and school transportation has been halted for two days, though education in the district continues. Minor water overflows occurred in the town center, but there are no major issues or significant material damage. All relevant teams are on-site, managing immediate interventions. The situation remains stable, but risks will continue until 8 p.m. We hope to avoid a second disaster,” Ataselim stated.

A 50-meter section of the collapsed road fell into the Kapisre Stream, and traffic is being rerouted via alternative routes. In another incident, the overflow of the Sundura Stream on the Hopa-Borçka highway caused a road collapse near Yanmış Köprü, restricting the road to one-way traffic. Teams are continuing their efforts to restore full access while maintaining necessary safety precautions.

Tuba the Turtle Travels 28,000 Kilometers in Four Years, Breaking Records

A remarkable journey by Tuba, a 30-year-old Caretta caretta sea turtle, has captured the attention of researchers and wildlife enthusiasts worldwide. Equipped with a satellite tracking device, Tuba traveled an astounding 28,000 kilometers over four years and two months, making her one of the longest-monitored sea turtles in the Mediterranean and possibly the world.

Tuba is one of 50 Caretta carettas released into the sea with satellite tracking devices by the Sea Turtle Research, Rescue, Rehabilitation and Information Center (DEKAMER) in Muğla. These turtles are continuously monitored to gather critical data on their migratory patterns, feeding areas, and behavior.

Prof. Dr. Yakup Kaska, a leading researcher at DEKAMER, highlighted the importance of this project in understanding the lives of sea turtles. “Sea turtles spend most of their lives in the sea, where they face significant threats. By tracking their movements with satellite chips, we aim to uncover vital information about their migratory routes, feeding habits, and behaviors,” Kaska explained.

Tuba’s journey began on Dalyan Iztuzu Beach and saw her traveling extensively across the Mediterranean. Initially, she spent two months off the coast of Marmaris, then reached Greece in about a month. Over the next few years, she visited the coasts of Malta, Italy, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania, Montenegro, and Croatia. In the past year, she was observed in the Ionian Sea, south of Italy.

“Tuba’s route was viewed on the map 8.7 million times,” Kaska noted. “Her journey, spanning 28,000 kilometers in 50 months, exceeded our expectations and set a record for the longest-tracked Caretta caretta in the Mediterranean.”

In addition to Tuba, other tracked turtles have also made remarkable journeys. A turtle named Mersin, released from Iztuzu Beach four years ago, returned to its namesake coast in Mersin after four years. Other turtles, including Berra, Begüm, Beste, Benan, Leyla, Özlem, Muhsine, Lycia, and Patara, are currently located along the Tunisian coast. Kadriye is in Italy, and Beyza is in Libya, while Özlem and Meyra returned to Iztuzu Beach after three years.

Conservation Success

As of June 25, 503 sea turtle nests have been protected, and hatchlings safely guided to the sea. The “Special Environmental Protection Zones Sea Turtles Satellite Monitoring Project,” supported by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, has garnered positive global attention.

The project’s findings are crucial for the protection of sea turtles’ habitats. Understanding their migratory and non-breeding periods helps researchers implement effective conservation measures. The ages of the monitored sea turtles range from 20 to 50 years.

This groundbreaking project not only aids in the preservation of these majestic creatures but also provides invaluable data for future conservation efforts.

The northern coast of Istanbul, particularly the shores of Kilyos, has become a haven for kitesurfers amidst the current warm and breezy weather of the Black Sea.

Surfers, reveling in the gusts as they somersault over the waves, rise about 20 meters above the sea, reaching unprecedented heights of adrenaline.

“The summer winds have commenced. The north wind blows in the afternoon. We endeavor to savor it as much as possible. We come here three or four days a week as long as there is wind,” surfer Uğur İyigün said.

Highlighting the liberating sensation of kiteboarding, İyigün noted that Kilyos caters to both professional and amateur surfers alike.

Emphasizing the suitability of Turkish seas for surfing due to their favorable wave heights, İyigün pointed out that the country’s western and northern shores are particularly conducive to this sport.

Surfing lessons are also offered on some of Istanbul’s most frequented beaches, with these sessions, conducted by expert instructors, welcoming enthusiasts of all ages.

In Kilyos, approximately 150-2,000 students receive training annually, with practice sessions typically commencing in mid-May and concluding in October.

In a morale boost heading into what promises to be a buoyant summer season, the flow of foreign tourists into Türkiye maintains on pace, signaling a continued momentum within the critical industry that serves as a vital source of income for the economy.

In May, Türkiye welcomed 4.5 million foreign visitors, marking a 16.2% year-over-year surge, the Culture and Tourism Ministry said Friday, propelled by robust flows from Russia, driven by flight restrictions imposed by Western nations over its invasion of Ukraine and alongside strong demand from Europe, led by Germany and the United Kingdom.

The enchanting Aegean province of Muğla and the northwestern province of Edirne, bordering Bulgaria and Greece, also attracted a substantial number of tourists, with 380,899 and 349,123 visitors, respectively.

The tourist districts of Muğla, Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye and Ula experienced an increase in the number of holidaymakers due to the Eid al-Adha holiday.

Türkiye hikes interest rates as Erdogan stages economic U-turn

Türkiye has hiked its main interest rate from 8.5% to 15%, reversing one of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s unorthodox economic policies.

The 6.5-point rise was far lower than economists were expecting, but it marked a major shift in policy by his new economic team brought in to tackle rampant inflation.

Türkiye ‘s leader has until now insisted on keeping interest rates down.

Inflation is almost 40% and Turks are in the grip of a cost-of-living crisis.

The head of Türkiye ‘s central bank, Hafize Gaye Erkan, 44, was only recruited from the US this month in the wake of Mr Erdoğan’s re-election as president.

Her decision marks the first rise in interest rates since December 2020, after a turbulent period in which three central bank governors were fired in less than two years, as they sought to stick to orthodox economics.

Although the increase almost doubles Türkiye ‘s policy rate to 15%, it is far less than many economists had forecast. US-based investment bank Morgan Stanley had suggested it would go up to 20%, while Goldman Sachs said it could hit 40%.

In its statement the bank’s monetary policy committee made clear that Thursday’s move was the start of a gradual process, with the target of bringing inflation down to 5%.

Export ban on tomatoes lifted in Türkiye

The Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry announced that the export restriction on tomatoes, which was previously announced to last until April 14, has been lifted. It was previously announced that the ban, which was introduced on March 2, would last until April 14. The ban was introduced to ensure supply availability in the domestic market and to prevent the rising prices of tomatoes. However, the ban was strongly criticized by the growers as tomato remains the main fresh produce export product for Türkiye.

Tomato growers across the country welcomed with joy the lifting of the ban. The tomato producers in Muğla’s Seydikemer and Fethiye districts reacted to the decision by making a joint statement together with the members of the Growers and Exporters Chambers in Fethiye Karaçulha Wholesaler Fruit and Vegetable Market.

Seydikemer Mayor Yakup Otgöz said, “The tomato export ban has been lifted with the instructions of our President Mr Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. We would like to thank our Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, our Minister of Trade Mehmet Muş , and our Mugla Deputies for their support. Good luck to our farmers and export companies in our region.”  After the news, increased activity is observed in the region this morning with growers receiving orders and starting to fulfil them.  As the restriction is lifted, the majority of the tomatoes will be sent to European countries.

Cliffside buildings in Türkiye’s resort town Antalya cause panic

Amid the quake panic in Türkiye following the deadly Feb. 6 quakes, the topic of the dangerously risky structures in the Mediterranean province of Antalya’s cliff edge has come to the agenda once again, as experts emphasized that action should be taken as soon as possible.

Life continues in eight to 10-story buildings in the Muratpaşa district and a cafeteria continues to host its customers despite the real risk of collapsing.

In 2013, Yıldız Technical University conducted a study in Antalya Konserve Bay, and the report stated that filling should be done at certain points determined by scientific methods in order to prevent the leakage of surface waters to the cliffs and to stop the regression.

No measures have been taken since then.

Bayram Ali Çeltik, the president of the Antalya Branch Office of the Geological Engineers Chamber, also pointed out that the structures on the cliff area should be demolished without wasting time.

He stated that as the waves beat the cliffs with great force, it causes erosion over time and that there are fractures in some areas.

“We can see that there are buildings with cracks in their columns and beams. However, since this area is highly profitable in terms of rent, no one voices this issue,” he said.

Ancient structures remain standing in Hatay despite Türkiye quake

Ancient remains, such as an aqueduct and theatre, in an ancient city in Türkiye’s Hatay, survived the recent Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes which rocked the country’s southeast. The structures have suffered numerous earthquakes throughout history.

The ruins of the Ancient City of Epiphaneia, also known as the Issos Ruins and other names, in the Erzin district of Hatay, were not damaged by the recent mega-earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş and Hatay.

The ancient city, which has been known by numerous different names throughout history, witnessed the Battle of Issos in 333 B.C. between Persian Ruler Darius III and Macedonian King Alexander the Great and contains traces of many other cultures, including from the Ottoman Empire.

Examinations by an archaeology team found that the ancient city was not affected by the earthquakes, except for minor damage to a structure in the ancient city.

Türkiye grants Tesla charging stations license as EV race heats up

Türkiye’s energy watchdog on Friday extended the U.S.-based electric carmaker Tesla a license to operate a charging network in the country.

Tesla is now one of 119 companies to operate charging stations and offers support to electric vehicle (EV) drivers across Türkiye.

“With charging stations to be installed at several locations, including parking lots, shopping centres and gas stations by licensed operators, electric vehicle owners will be able to receive charging services and will be able to travel more affordably in the face of rising fuel prices,” the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) said.

There are 3,728 commercial charging stations in Türkiye, including 3,082 slow (AC) and 646 fast (DC) charging stations, according to the authority.

Boosted by lower consumer tax rates than combustion-engine cars, new electric car registrations have surged more than 90% in Türkiye since 2021, according to the EPDK data.

As of December 2022, 14,896 new electric vehicles were registered compared to 7,694 in the same month of 2021, the EPDK data showed.

Serious drought around the corner for Türkiye

Türkiye is in the grip of drought, and the country will pay a heavier price if strict actions are not immediately taken, experts have warned.

According to Prof. Dr. Murat Türkeş, a member of the Board of Directors of Boğaziçi University Climate Change and Policy Implementation and Research Center and a member of the Turkish Foundation for Combating Soil Erosion, for Reforestation and the Protection of Natural Habitats (TEMA), most of the country is currently experiencing moderate to severe drought.

Türkeş said that despite the warnings made by experts for a long time, the danger of drought has not yet been fully understood.

Türkeş, commenting on the growing danger of drought, said that the country has received very limited rainfall since November.

“Our need for irrigation water will become more apparent around July. The situation is manageable for grains at the moment, but for vegetables and fruits that require plenty of water, the problem will be major in the summer,” he said.
