First Snow of the Season Falls on the High Ground of Antalya and Muğla

Muğla/Antalya – The first snow of the season fell on the higher elevations of Antalya’s Kaş district and the Girdev Plateau in Muğla’s Seydikemer district, marking the arrival of winter in the region.

Overnight snowfall blanketed Akdağ, a 2,700-meter mountain in the Gömbe neighborhood of Kaş, transforming the landscape into a white panorama. Residents captured the moment, sharing images of the snow-covered peaks.

Meanwhile, Yörük herders grazing their animals in the area began to return from the plateau as the snow intensified.

In Muğla’s Seydikemer district, snowfall followed a day of heavy rain and falling temperatures, coating the Girdev Plateau, located at an altitude of 2,100 meters, in a layer of white. The plateau, known as a popular summer destination, offered a striking view of early winter beauty.

Seydikemer Mayor Bayram Önder Akdenizli commented on the seasonal change, saying:

“We are saying ‘hello’ to winter with this fascinating view of nature. The high-altitude mountains of our district are now covered in snow.”

The snowfall in both Antalya and Muğla signaled the official arrival of winter across the highlands of southwestern Turkey.

Work Begins on Phases 2 and 4 of a Major Investment in Ölüdeniz

Ölüdeniz, MUĞLA – Muğla Metropolitan Municipality has announced the start of work on phases two and four of its 328 million TL road and infrastructure investment on the Fethiye–Ölüdeniz road.

The third phase of the project was completed before Eid al-Adha, with hot asphalt paving finished and the road opened to traffic. Work on the remaining phases will begin following the end of the tourism season.

The Metropolitan Municipality, which continues its investments in roads across 13 districts of Muğla, has already helped ease traffic congestion and improve road safety through projects on Atatürk Street in the Ovacık area of Ölüdeniz and the Hisarönü–Kayaköy road in Kayaköy — two of Fethiye’s most significant tourist destinations.

The first phase of the Patlangıç–Ovacık project included 2,400 meters of PMT (polymerized concrete layer), a bituminous base and binder layer, 2,100 meters of guardrail, and 300 meters of curbing, with an average road width of 15 meters.

The third phase involved laying 2,650 meters of BSK (hot mixed coated concrete layer) and PMT, installing 1,173 meters of guardrail, 2,200 meters of drinking water lines, 300 meters of motorist-friendly barriers, 2,730 meters of curbs, 1,865 square meters of paving stones, and 2,550 meters of trench concrete paving.

The overall project encompasses 11,000 meters of hot asphalt, 2,200 meters of drinking water lines, 1,600 meters of rainwater lines, and 6,500 meters of steel guardrails.

After pausing during the tourism season, the Metropolitan Municipality will soon resume work on phase two along the Ovacık city route and phase four on the Ölüdeniz–Kayaköy road in the Fethiye district, starting from the gendarmerie checkpoint.

Phase two will include the construction of a 2,650-meter rainwater pipeline, sidewalk improvements, hot asphalt paving, retaining walls, and roundabout upgrades along the Ovacık city route. Phase four will feature approximately 2,500 meters of hot asphalt on the Ölüdeniz–Kayaköy road, as well as new sidewalks, rainwater and drinking water pipelines, and infrastructure for Türk Telekom and Superonline lines.

Out of the total 328 million TL investment, 165,236,590 TL is allocated for the second and fourth phases.

Ahmet Aras, Mayor of the Coastal Aegean Municipalities Union and Muğla Metropolitan Municipality, stated that the investments in Fethiye and surrounding areas will contribute to both regional tourism and residents’ quality of life.

“Fethiye is one of the most important tourism centers not only in Muğla but also in Turkey,” said Mayor Aras. “With this awareness, we are working in a planned manner to prevent inconvenience during the tourism season and to complete our investments quickly afterward. We aim to make life easier for both locals and our guests by making the Ölüdeniz and Kayaköy roads modern, safe, and comfortable.”

Iconic Haydarpaşa and Sirkeci Stations Reborn as Cultural Hubs

Istanbul, TURKEY – The historic Haydarpaşa and Sirkeci train stations, two of Istanbul’s most symbolic landmarks, are being transformed into vibrant cultural and artistic centers while preserving their transportation functions, Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced during a press conference at Haydarpaşa Station.

Under a protocol signed between the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and State Railways in August 2024, restoration and revitalization work began to safeguard these late Ottoman and early Republican architectural gems.

Ersoy emphasized that both projects aim to protect Turkey’s cultural heritage while revitalizing spaces that hold deep historical and emotional significance. “These two magnificent structures are not merely stations; they are part of our collective memory,” he said.

At Haydarpaşa Station, restoration includes reinforcing century-old wooden foundations and creating a new cultural complex featuring museums, open-air event spaces, a library complex, a performance arts center, and a manuscript healing center. Archaeological excavations in the area have also revealed ancient ruins believed to belong to the “City of the Blind,” which will be integrated into a new archaeo-park and archaeological museum.

Meanwhile, Sirkeci Station, famed as the terminus of the Orient Express, is undergoing ground stabilization and structural renewal due to its proximity to the sea. Once complete, the station will feature a railway museum, migration museum, travel library, and exhibition halls, offering visitors a place to connect with Istanbul’s layered past.

Ersoy said both projects reflect Türkiye’s vision of linking cultural preservation with modern urban life, ensuring that these landmarks remain living spaces where “culture, history, and daily life meet.”

L’Étape Turkey by Tour de France United Amateur Cyclists in Istanbul

Istanbul, TURKEY – The second edition of L’Étape Turkey by Tour de France brought together amateur cyclists from around the world for an exhilarating race through Istanbul’s Beykoz Sports Forest. The event, modeled after the iconic Tour de France for non-professional riders, once again expanded the reach of cycling across Turkey.

The race began at 8 a.m. on October 12, marking a vibrant day for cycling enthusiasts.

Event Director Ömer Kafkas said this year’s race offered participants the unique experience of crossing two continents. “We were thrilled to host the second edition in Turkey. Nearly 40 countries were represented,” he stated.

Last year’s event attracted over 2,000 cyclists, and participation numbers rose further this year. “Our communication network also expanded. The race, broadcast on a few Turkish channels last year, aired in 80 countries on 170 channels this year,” Kafkas noted.

Turkey, which earned the highest score of 96 points among 20 host nations in last year’s global ranking, once again secured the right to host the event.

Kafkas highlighted collaboration with around 40 partners from public and private sectors, adding, “We aim to increase the number of participants to 4,000–5,000 within the next eight years.”

Emphasizing the event’s contribution to promoting cycling culture, he said, “Mass-participation events like this inspire people to adopt cycling as a lifestyle. Children see riders and want to follow their example.”

The 105-kilometer route was completely closed to traffic, providing a safe and memorable ride for all participants.
