Türkiye Records Hottest June in 53 Years
Türkiye experienced its hottest June in over half a century, according to data from the General Directorate of Meteorology of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. Average temperatures last month soared to unprecedented levels, with most regions reporting temperatures well above seasonal norms.
The nationwide average temperature in June 2024 reached 25.4°C, significantly higher than the 1991-2020 average of 21.8°C, marking a 3.6°C increase. This makes June 2024 the hottest since records began in 1971.
Ağrı Doğubeyazıt was the only area where temperatures remained around seasonal norms. Elsewhere, temperatures consistently exceeded expectations. The lowest temperature in the country was recorded in Erzurum at 1.6°C, while the highest was a scorching 47.8°C in Şanlıurfa Ceylanpınar.
The Mediterranean Region, in particular, experienced notably high temperatures, with an average of 28.2°C for June. Within this region, Kahramanmaraş Göksun reported the lowest temperature at 11°C, and Antalya Manavgat recorded the highest at 44.7°C.
These figures highlight a significant departure from historical norms, underscoring the growing impact of climate change on regional weather patterns.

Türkiye targets water efficiency, sets bold goals for future
Türkiye is setting bold targets to enhance water sustainability, with Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumaklı outlining ambitious goals during the 2nd National Water Council meeting.
“We aim to reduce our average daily water consumption per person from 150 liters to 120 liters by 2030 and below 100 liters by 2050,” Yumaklı stated on Thursday.
He highlighted Türkiye’s vulnerability, noting, “Our country is among the 25 countries most at risk of water scarcity according to evaluations by the World Resources Institute.”
“We have embarked on the principle of ‘Zero Water Loss,’ aiming to protect our water resources with national consciousness and manage them effectively,” Yumaklı said.
Türkiye’s agricultural sector, ranking first in Europe and among the top 10 globally in agricultural gross domestic product, plays a crucial role in these efforts.
Yumaklı emphasized the importance of efficient land use, agricultural production planning and water management practices to ensure food security through sustainable agricultural practices.

Topuklu Plateau Welcomes International Astronomers for Sky Observation Event
Located in the western province of Denizli’s Beyağaç district, Topuklu Plateau hosted local and foreign astronomers for the “Beyağaç-Topuklu Plateau International Sky Observation Event,” which ran from June 11 to 14. The event marked the plateau’s fourth annual gathering but its first on an international scale.
The Topuklu Plateau, known as one of Türkiye’s darkest locations, is set to accommodate around 30 amateur and professional astronomers. These skywatchers will study and photograph celestial objects, taking advantage of the plateau’s pristine night sky conditions.
The event is expected to draw over 3,000 participants from around the world, bringing Topuklu Plateau closer to being designated an “International Dark Sky Place” (IDSP). This recognition would underscore the plateau’s exceptional conditions for stargazing and its commitment to minimizing light pollution.
In addition to promoting astronomical observations, the event aims to enhance awareness at both national and international levels. It is also designed to support the social, cultural, and economic development of local residents. By establishing Topuklu Plateau as an “Astro Tourism Destination,” organizers hope to make it a recurring event, with improvements and expansions each year.
Under the theme “Sky Is Waiting for You,” the event invites sky and astronomy enthusiasts of all ages to participate free of charge, promising a unique and educational experience in one of the world’s premier stargazing locations.
