UK Hiking Boom as Interest in Three Peaks Challenge Soars

The UK’s love affair with the great outdoors is reaching new heights after Princess Kate successfully completed the iconic Three Peaks Challenge, inspiring thousands of people to lace up their walking boots and explore some of Britain’s most scenic landscapes.

New research from Parkdean Resorts reveals that online interest in hiking has surged following the Princess’s achievement. Google searches for the ‘Three Peaks Challenge’ have increased by an impressive 942% over the past week, while searches for ‘three peaks’ have risen by 343% during the same period.

The growing enthusiasm extends beyond the famous challenge. Across the UK, Google searches for ‘best UK hikes’ have climbed by 156% over the past month, highlighting a broader shift towards outdoor adventures and nature-based experiences.

Parkdean Resorts’ latest survey suggests hiking has become firmly established as one of the nation’s favourite pastimes. Around 86% of Britons say they have been on a hike, while 61% have noticed more people embracing hiking in recent months.

A spokesperson for Parkdean Resorts said the rise reflects a growing desire for healthier lifestyles and time spent in nature.

“There’s definitely been an increase in people taking up outdoor activities like hiking, trail running and walking in recent years. We’ve seen more of our guests actively seeking out destinations that offer easy access to scenic routes and nature-led experiences, with many prioritising fresh air and wellbeing when planning their breaks.

“Social media is also inspiring trends like the ‘hot girl hike’, which has helped reframe hiking as something that’s not only good for your health and fitness, but also social, fun and appealing to a wider audience. Gen Z in particular are taking up the hobby in large numbers, and it’s really encouraging to see more young people getting involved and putting their own spin on outdoor activities.”

The research also identified the UK’s favourite hiking destinations, with the Lake District emerging as the clear favourite. Nearly a third (32%) of respondents said they would choose the national park for a hiking trip, thanks to its breathtaking scenery, excellent facilities and extensive network of trails suitable for every ability.

The spokesperson added:

“It’s no surprise that the Lake District continues to top the list, given its iconic views, local amenities and range of routes that are suitable for all abilities. The Lakes have a lot to offer for tourists of all generations, year-round.

“Other destinations we know our hiking guests love are the Cornwall Coast, the North Yorkshire Moors and the Scottish Highlands.”

With hiking continuing to grow in popularity, Parkdean Resorts has also revealed its top UK hiking destinations for anyone looking to embrace the viral ‘hot girl hike’ trend this summer.
