82-year-old man attacked by bear in northeastern Türkiye
An old man, who was attacked by a bear in Artvin’s Şavşat district, was saved by his neighbors killing the bear.
The incident took place around 16:00 in Cevizli village. Mustafa Bilen (82), who left the house to collect his animals in the pasture, was attacked by a bear that came down to the village.
Neighbours who heard his screams, shot the bear when it did not let go of the old man despite his screams.
The old man, who suffered a number of injuries, was taken to the hospital who reported that his condition was good.
Tourism season to be extended
The second meeting of the FTSO Professional Committees Joint Meeting was held in the Likya Meeting Hall this week.
During the meeting, Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FTSO) Charirman Osman Çıralı gave detailed information to the committee members about the market diversity in tourism, their efforts to attract more tourists to the region and extend the tourism season.
Underlining that Fethiye’s most important source of income is tourism, FTSO is preparing a new promotional campaign in the British market together with Fethiye Municipality and leading UK airline Jet2.
Çıralı evaluated the 2023 tourism season and talked about the preparations for the London Tourism Fair.
“In the first 8 months of 2023, the number of passengers arriving at Dalaman Airport increased by 16.3 percent compared to the same period of 2022. In the first 8 months of 2023, a total of 3 million 622 thousand passengers came to our region via Dalaman Airport. 2 million 406 thousand of them are international passengers. At the end of the year, Dalaman Airport is expected to exceed the 5 million passenger threshold for the first time in its history. It is estimated that the number of international passengers will be 3.5 million. The airport’s projected passenger number increase rate by the end of 2023 is 16.6% annually. It is thought-provoking that despite the increase in the number of holidaymakers, tourism revenues do not increase at the same rate. We are working on this issue. In order to solve this problem in the 2024 tourism season, we have taken the first step to better promote our region in England with its different aspects. We will carry out a joint promotional campaign with Jet2 in the UK market. This year the tourism season has extended until November. With the promotional campaign we will run jointly with Jet2, we are taking another important step to extend the tourism season in Fethiye both at the beginning and at the end. “The campaign, which will be carried out in parallel with the increasing flights from England to Dalaman, will make it easier for our members in the tourism sector to make long-term plans for the 2024 tourism season.”
Çıralı said that in order to promote local products, FTSO will participate in the YÖREX-Local Products Fair together with Muğla Chambers at ANFAŞ-Antalya Fair and Congress Center on 02-05 November 2023.

Türkiye’s Kumluca Middle Bronze Age Shipwreck reveals ancient treasures
The Kumluca Middle Bronze Age Shipwreck, believed to be one of the world’s oldest known shipwrecks, has been yielding significant finds for underwater archaeology.
A team of 40 experts, led by professor Hakan Oniz, is conducting underwater excavations off the Antalya coast of Türkiye. Using advanced technology and robots, they have recovered 30 copper ingots, amphoras and personal belongings of sailors from the ship.
Underwater archaeologists, equipped with air tubes, painstakingly retrieved artifacts from a shipwreck that sank 3,600 years ago at a depth of approximately 50 meters (164 feet).
Some items take a month to extract, utilizing small tools and vacuum devices.
The finds, particularly the copper ingots representing the currency of the time, highlight Türkiye’s rich cultural heritage, including its role in early history, epic tales, maritime trade and shipbuilding.
“This ship, which was probably loaded with copper from mines in Cyprus, sank during a storm on its way to the island of Crete,” Oniz told Anadolu.
“This happened approximately 3,550 to 3,600 years ago. In this context, the Kumluca Middle Bronze Age Shipwreck still holds the title of the world’s oldest trade shipwreck,” Oniz added.
All recovered items undergo a salt removal process at the Antalya Restoration and Conservation Regional Laboratory. The ongoing work in one of the world’s oldest shipwrecks, at great depths, underscores Türkiye’s prominence in the field of underwater archaeology.
Türkiye travel warning for UK holidaymakers as Foreign Office issues fresh advice
UK holidaymakers are being warned against visiting some parts of Türkiye in fresh advice from the UK Foreign Office.
The change in guidance comes following a suicide bomb attack in the heart of the Turkish capital Ankara last weekend.
Almost a thousand arrests have been made across Türkiye since the attack, with police targeting people with alleged links to Kurdish militants.
The PKK claimed responsibility for the suicide attack, according to a news website close to the group. The PKK has led a decades-long insurgency in Türkiye and is considered a terror organisation by the United States and the European Union.
Holidaymakers that travel against FCDO risk invalidating their travel insurance. The government body said: “Your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against FCDO advice. Consular support is also severely limited where FCDO advises against travel.
“An explosion occurred in the Kizilay district of Ankara on the morning of 1 October. The Turkish police have announced that no civilians were affected and the incident has been contained. We advise all British Nationals in the area to follow the advice of Turkish authorities.”

Tour of Türkiye set to kick off along scenic Turkish Riviera
The 58th edition of Tour of Türkiye will kick off in the country’s Mediterranean resort city of Antalya on Monday, with hundreds of athletes from across the world gathering for the eight-day event.
One of the most prestigious cycling events of the world, Tour of Türkiye features a course comprising some of the country’s beautiful Mediterranean and Aegean coastal towns including Antalya, Mugla, Aydin, and Izmir.
Starting from the Alanya district of the Mediterranean resort city of Antalya, and ending in Istanbul on Oct. 15, a total of 168 cyclists from 36 countries will have 1,235 kilometers in the Turkish Riviera by the end of the eight-day race.
The Presidential Cycling Tour of Türkiye, the only “intercontinental bicycle tour” in the world will host 24 teams, including four world tour teams, seven professional, 12 continental teams, and one national team.
The Tour of Türkiye started as the Marmara Tour in 1963 and gained international qualification in 1966, becoming the competition ground of teams on a world scale.
