1,874 children reconnected with families after Türkiye’s Feb. 6 quakes
Almost a year after the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes that impacted 11 southern provinces, 1,874 out of the 1,912 orphaned children affected by the tragedy have successfully reunited with their families, Ayşegül Yıldırım Kara, director general of child services at the Family, Labor and Social Services Ministry, reported.
Kara stated that the ministry quickly formed a crisis desk after the earthquakes and said: “After the first minutes of the earthquake, this crisis team contacted the provinces to ensure coordination in all areas where we provide services. We first reached out to protect the children who stayed in our institutions in the earthquake region and transferred approximately 900 children to our institutions in different regions of Türkiye within 48 hours.”
With cooperation from other ministries and organizations, the children who lost their relatives in the earthquake, whose families could not be reached or who were unidentified, were identified and cared for.
Highlighting that the ministry’s work in the earthquake region also reached out to support adults, Kara said: “We have also strengthened our support for parents. While we provided psychosocial support to both families and children, we also provided psychosocial support services to our colleagues.
Türkiye introduces first primary and middle music schools
In a move to foster a future generation of musicians set to resonate on both national and international stages, Türkiye’s first primary and middle music schools will be opened in cooperation with the Education Ministry and Ankara University of Music and Fine Arts
The schools will cultivate young musical talents from all over the country.
In this context, a cooperation protocol has been signed between the Ministry and Ankara University of Music and Fine Arts. The schools will be located on the university campus, where a fine arts high school will also be established.
The development follows the Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy’s announcement in November about the revival of a law widely known as the “wonderful children act” in the public.
The act provides opportunities and financial support for exceptionally talented children in the field of fine arts to receive advanced education abroad.

Record number of foreigners with residence permits leave Türkiye in 2023
Data by Türkiye’s Migration Management Presidency revealed that 250,000 foreign residents left Türkiye in 2023, breaking the COVID-19 period record of 214,000.
The report indicated that the number of foreigners with a Turkish residence permit was 1,107,032 in 2023. The number indicates a 250,000-people decrease in 2023 compared to 2022, marking Turkey’s largest decrease in foreign residents. The numbers include foreign nationals who obtained short-term, study, family, or “other” residence permits in 2023.
The decrease in 2023 broke the previous record of 2020 marked by the pandemic, when 214,377 foreign nationals with residence permits had left the country, according to reporting by the daily BirGün.
The directorate ranked the five nationalities that obtained the most Turkish residence permits in 2023 as Turkmenistan, Russia, Iraq, Iran, and Syria. Turkmenistan nationals obtained around 109,000 residence permits, and the other countries closely followed.
According to economy news outlet ekonomim.com, among the reasons why foreigners left Türkiye were the cost of living crisis, along with the international sanctions on the Russian Federation, the conscription of young Russian males, and increased selectivity in the residence permit process.
The Turkish Interior Ministry on July 15 announced that it would no longer grant a residence permit to foreigners residing in Istanbul except in “compulsory cases such as life safety, health, education, and international trade,” until further notice.
Adverse weather hits fishing sector
With adverse weather dealing a severe blow to the fishing sector, fishermen are struggling to continue catching fish in the Black Sea, resulting in limited fish stock available for selling and a consequent rise in prices that have also almost doubled.
Fishermen from the northeastern province of Ordu stated that fishing continues off the coast of the Central Black Sea region, albeit to a lesser extent, so the prices are high. Saying that the anchovy went to Georgia, the fishermen stated that the price of the anchovy, which was sold for 50 Turkish Liras a week ago, has reached 120 liras.
Taner Özbekçi, a member of the Ordu Kumbaşı Fishermen’s Association, said that prices have increased due to unfavorable weather conditions and the scarcity of fish.
“Unfavorable weather conditions can negatively affect the season, however, the fishing season starts early. Anchovy has now gone from our waters to the Georgian side, with very few anchovies left along the coasts of our country. If anchovy fishing continues in these months, it will decrease even more in the coming years. Prices are also high because there is no fish and the weather is cold,” he said.
Erdal Çamaş, a fisherman, noted that there are no anchovies on the stalls, and the prices of other varieties are high.
“Currently, fishing teams are unable to go to sea due to adverse weather. Therefore, prices are also high. Anchovy, which was sold for around 50 liras, is being sold for about 120 lira for the last week. There is an expectation of snowfall on the weekend, which means fish will not be there for a while, and prices will get high,” Çamaş said.
The Turkish State Meteorology Service has warned that a new cold wave coming from Iceland will hit the country and that the wave will move from the country’s west toward the north and reach the Black Sea in January.

Togg targets 1M units for Europe by 2030 as new model T10F makes its debut
Türkiye’s Togg, which started its journey with its first electric vehicle, T10X, in 2019, has introduced its new sedan model T10F at the CES tech show in Las Vegas, United States.
Turkish electric vehicle pioneer’s T10F sedan model possesses cutting-edge features, including up to 600 km range and innovative V2L technology.
T10F has been designed to receive the highest 5-star level in all tests of the Euro NCAP program. The car will provide a safe drive in all road conditions with seven airbags, and durable and robust infrastructure.
Delivering around 20,000 units of T10X – C SUV – so far, the firm wants to increase its production capacity to 200,000 units annually to meet export demand and targets a delivery of 1 million units to Europe by 2030.
T10F is expected to enter the market in 2025, depending on the completion of certification.

Fethiyespor signed contracts with two new players this week; left-back Ali Mert Aydın from Afyonspor, and Serdar Ümit Deniz who has played for Çankaya FK, Nevşehir Bld, Ispartaspor, Kocaelispor, Sakaryaspor and Keçiörengücü.
