21 injured in bus accident in Antalya
21 people were injured in an accident that occurred when an intercity passenger bus overturned into a ditch near Akseki district of Antalya.
The bus, which was making the Trabzon-Antalya trip, overturned into a ditch in Güçlüköy District of Akseki as a result of excessive speed and carelessness.
The injured were treated in hospitals in Manavgat, who reported that one of the injured was in a life-threatening condition.

Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) announce results of the Address-Based Population Registration System for 2023
The Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) announced the results of the Address-Based Population Registration System for 2023.
As of December 31, 2023, the population residing in Türkiye increased by 92 thousand 824 people compared to the previous year and reached a total of 85 million 372 thousand 377.
The male population was 42 million 734 thousand 71 (50.1%) and the female population was 42 million 638 thousand 306 (49.9%).
The population in Fethiye decreased from 177 thousand 702 in 2022, to 177 thousand 569 in 2023. The male population was 88,547 (49.87%) and the female population was 89,022 (50.13%).
The population in Seydikemer increased from 62 thousand 622 in 2022, to 65 thousand 851 in 2023. The male population was 34,346 (52.16%) and the female population was 47.84% (47.84%).

Divers find shipwreck in Black Sea amid cleanup works
Members of the Black Sea Divers Sports Club stumbled upon the wreckage of a steamship at a depth of 50 meters, measuring approximately 100 meters in length, while conducting a dive to clean up ghost nets in the Black Sea.
Fishermen along the shores of Hopa, a district in Artvin province located in the Black Sea region, reached out to the Black Sea Divers Sports Club for assistance in cleaning up ghost nets that were causing economic losses and fish fatalities. Working within a 5-kilometer radius through diving operations, club members encountered the steamship wreckage. Despite examining the wreckage, the divers were unable to ascertain the name of the ship due to ghost nets covering it.
Rıza Birkan, the president of the Black Sea Divers Sports Club, expressed concern over the impact of ghost nets surrounding the shipwreck. “We observed a wreck approximately 1.5 to 2 nautical miles from the coast. In our initial measurements, we located the rear section of the ship. It was 53 meters long and 11 meters wide, with depths ranging between 50 and 55 meters. Approximately 1.5 meters of the wreck is buried in the seabed, while 4.5 to 5 meters are above the seabed. The first step in dealing with the wreck is to remove the nets.”
Erdinç Turanlı, the vice president of the club, estimated that around 10 tons of ghost nets were entangled around the wreckage, proposing a project to remove them.
Once removed, efforts would focus on identifying the ship’s name and cargo, which could be revealed upon clearing the nets.
Turanlı also highlighted the presence of hundreds of dead fish within the nets, emphasizing the urgent need for their removal to prevent further harm to marine life.

Marmara Sea has seismic gap
The seismic gap extending to 130 kilometers in the Marmara Sea constitutes one of the main causes of the expected major earthquake, experts warned at a meeting held on the anniversary of the deadly Feb. 6 earthquakes that shook 11 southern provinces.
During the meeting held at Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, developments were explained and information about the expected Istanbul earthquake was presented.
“We observe around 50 earthquakes per day in the region. These earthquakes will continue for a while. We have 48 earthquakes between 5 and 5.9 magnitudes and three aftershocks between 6 and 6.9 magnitudes,” said Prof. Dr. Haluk Özener, the institute’s director.
“It is clear that we will experience an earthquake above 7 magnitude in the Marmara Sea. According to some academics, this earthquake can happen very soon or not take place for another 50 years. But we know that there will be an earthquake here,” he said.
A seminar was organized by Atatürk University on the anniversary of the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes. Associate Professor Dr. Çağlar Özer reported that the Feb. 6 earthquakes last year were the second-largest after the 7.9-magnitude Erzincan earthquake in 1939.
“After the earthquakes, 50,000 earthquakes occurred only around Kahramanmaraş over the last year. Before that, in the last 120 years of earthquake activity in the region, there were only 400 earthquakes larger than 4 magnitude in and around Kahramanmaraş. It has been a year now and the shocks are still continuing in the region. It will continue for a while,” he said.

Dozens of illegally imported luxury cars seized at Turkish customs
Turkish customs security teams seized 49 luxury vehicles valued at 445 million Turkish Liras ($14.5 million), which were brought into the country without proper registration for domestic use, the Trade Ministry has announced.
Vehicles brought from abroad in Türkiye, before being used in the country, must be tracked and registered in traffic documents and the necessary registration procedures must be carried out in order to make tax arrangements for the vehicle. However, tourists entering the country are not subject to these procedures if they stay temporarily for less than 185 days.
In a written statement on Feb. 7, the ministry revealed that these vehicles, attempting to enter the country by falsely portraying themselves as temporarily brought in by tourists, were under investigation.
In the initial operation, vehicles arriving at the Habur Customs Gate from Iraq, purportedly as temporary entries by tourists, were flagged for scrutiny. The examination uncovered attempts by individuals to illicitly bring in these luxury vehicles by falsely presenting themselves as being abroad, attempting to comply with the 185-day requirement, in violation of the relevant regulations.
Customs enforcement teams confiscated two illicit luxury cars during the operation, determining their current market value to be approximately 12.2 million liras.
In another operation, teams conducting investigations through electronic programs identified 47 vehicles whose stay in the country had been illegitimately extended during the initial entry phase or through the passport process.
In connection with the incident, security forces also detained 54 individuals.

Türkiye’s 20 most air-polluted regions revealed
Analyzing data from air quality monitoring stations, Greenpeace Mediterranean has identified 20 regions with the highest air pollution in Türkiye, with the southeastern quake-hit province of Hatay’s Iskenderun district ranking first.
As part of its efforts to combat air pollution, Greenpeace Mediterranean analyzed particulate matter, PM10 data obtained from stations in the national air quality monitoring network of the Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Ministry throughout 2023.
20 regions with the highest air pollution in Türkiye were analyzed, with Iskenderun taking the lead and Istanbul’s Kadıköy district ranking second.
Contrary to expectations, no other district from Istanbul was included in the ranking, while the southeastern quake-hit provinces such as Hatay, Osmaniye, Gaziantep and Kahramanmaraş were included in the ranking.
The northeastern province of Bursa was also on the list with its Kestel and Nilüfer districts.
According to the analysis results, polluted air exceeding the PM10 limit value was breathed for 235 days of the year in Iskenderun district.
Pointing out that according to the World Health Organization, air pollution causes 13 deaths per minute worldwide, Greenpeace Climate and Energy expert Gökhan Ersoy said that in Türkiye, air pollution ranks fifth after tobacco, overweight, hypertension and hyperglycemia in risks leading to death.
Pointing to fossil fuels as responsible for air pollution in general, Ersoy said, “The fact that three other cities from the earthquake region are on the list this year and that Hatay and Osmaniye are among the 10 most polluted regions for the first time, shows that the additional pollution load caused by the debris removal works cannot be tolerated in terms of public health, as all stations in these three cities exceeded the annual limit value.”

Blue cards to be introduced into football for sin-bins under Ifab trials
The International Football Association Board (IFAB) is preparing to implement a revolutionary new blue card in football.
Footballers could be shown blue cards and sent to a sin-bin for dissent and cynical fouls under plans to be unveiled by the body that decides the laws of the game.
Sitting alongside the current yellow and red cards, a blue card would result in a player being removed from the field of play for 10 minutes. At risk of muddying the palette, there will also be the possibility to mix colours. If a player returns from the sin-bin and receives another blue card, they would also be shown a red card and be permanently dismissed from the game. A combination of one blue and one yellow, meanwhile, would also make a red.
The recommendations are set to be made by the International Football Association Board (Ifab) on Friday ahead of trials across competitions.
