5th International Fethiye Sports Festival started on October 6th
The 5th International Fethiye Sports Festival is taking place in Fethiye from October 6th to 27th, 2024. The highly anticipated event began with a cycling race on Sunday, October 6th. Speaking about the festival, Fethiye Youth and Sports District Manager Harun Reşit Yiğit provided details on the upcoming event, which is being organized under the auspices of the Fethiye District Governor and with the support of local institutions.
Yiğit expressed excitement for the festival’s fifth edition, saying, “The International Fethiye Sports Festival is starting this week. We will kick off with a bicycle race on Sunday, followed by many other activities, including a swimming race next week.”
Yiğit also highlighted the festival’s contribution to the region, noting that 3,400 athletes had participated in previous years. “This event plays a significant role in promoting alternative tourism in Fethiye, and we are very proud of this achievement,” he said. “This year, we expect to host around 2,000 athletes in Ölüdeniz, with many participants coming from both international and national levels.
The 5th International Fethiye Sports Festival promises an exciting lineup of sporting events that will energize the city throughout October.

Lake Bafa in Muğla faces 30-metre water retreat due to drought
Lake Bafa, located in Muğla’s Milas district near the ancient Five Finger Mountains, has experienced a 30-meter retreat along its shores due to insufficient rainfall this year. The lake, an internationally significant wetland, hosts 261 bird species, 22 reptile species, and 19 mammal species, providing vital habitat for endangered birds like flamingos. Despite the drought, flamingos and other species can still be seen, but locals are concerned about the long-term effects.
Dr. Ceyhun Özçelik from Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University explained that drought, coupled with pollution from the Büyük Menderes River, has worsened water quality and reduced oxygen levels, affecting fish and other wildlife. He called for basin-based water management and stricter pollution control to protect the lake’s ecosystem and cultural heritage. While the situation is critical, Özçelik expressed hope that winter rains will help replenish the lake’s water levels and aid recovery.

Researchers discover new dolphin species in Türkiye
A team of researchers from the Marine Mammal Research Association (DMAD) has made a groundbreaking discovery, spotting a new dolphin species in Turkish waters. The rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis) was captured on video during DMAD’s annual expedition, which surveys cetaceans across the Black Sea, Marmara, Aegean, and Mediterranean regions.
Led by DMAD founder Aylin Akkaya and marine biologist Leyla İsrapilova, the project marked the first-ever recorded sighting of this species in Türkiye.
“This is an exciting discovery,” said İsrapilova, noting that the rough-toothed dolphin thrives in deep, warm waters.
In addition to the newly spotted species, the team also observed other marine mammals, including sperm whales, Cuvier’s beaked whales, and striped dolphins. However, they noted a worrying decline in sightings of the endangered Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), a species believed to be disappearing from the region.

Gravyer cheese from Türkiye’s Kars gains geographical status
Gravyer cheese, made from the milk of cows raised in the high-altitude plateaus of Kars in eastern Türkiye, has officially been certified with a geographical indication. The cheese, known for its distinct flavor and traditional production methods, is created through a careful process, from milk collection to a maturation period of six to nine months.
The Kars Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KATSO) applied for the certification in 2021, and on September 17, the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office granted the geographical indication. KATSO Chair Kadir Bozan highlighted the annual production of 200-250 tons and expressed plans to pursue European certification to promote Kars gravyer internationally.
Local excitement over the certification is high, with residents and producers eager to share this culinary heritage with the world. The rising demand for Turkish traditional cheese has contributed to the local economy and drawn attention to sustainable farming and artisanal cheese-making practices in the region.

Türkiye hopeful to see below 20% inflation in 2025
Türkiye aims to reduce its annual inflation rate to below 20% next year and to single-digit levels by 2026, according to Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz. Speaking to business leaders in Istanbul, Yilmaz highlighted that uncertainty is the biggest challenge in the economy, but the country is working to minimize it.
This week, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) reported that inflation in Türkiye was at 49.38% in September, the lowest since July 2023. Yilmaz emphasized the importance of ensuring predictability, sustainability, and confidence in the economy.
He also mentioned that growth is key for Türkiye, a developing country, and should continue. Over the past two decades, Türkiye’s average growth rate was 5.4%, compared to the global average of 3.6%.
Yilmaz noted that the current account deficit has significantly decreased from $60 billion in the middle of last year to below $20 billion now. He also pointed out a major drop in the country’s risk premium and record-high Central Bank reserves, which reached $157.4 billion on Sept. 27.
