Blue voyage season wraps up in tourism hub Bodrum

As the summer season winds down, the scenic town of Bodrum in Muğla, a tourism hotspot, sees an influx of private and commercial boats pulled ashore for essential maintenance. This follows a successful season in which thousands of local and international visitors experienced the famed “blue voyages” along the Turkish Riviera, renowned for its breathtaking coastlines and luxury marine experiences.

Approximately 600 commercial vessels, offering a combined bed capacity of 7,000, operated in Bodrum this season, hosting around 8,000 daily visitors from Europe and the Middle East. This influx bolstered the local economy and positioned Bodrum’s marine tourism as a significant contributor to Turkey’s national income, with around 90 percent of marine tourism revenue generated along Muğla’s coastlines, including Bodrum, Marmaris, and Fethiye.

Orhan Dinç, head of the Bodrum Chamber of Shipping (DTO), highlighted that Bodrum’s three marinas operated at full capacity throughout the season. Now, as the region transitions to winter, shipyards have become busy hubs for the maintenance and repair of yachts, especially those exceeding 20 meters.

With marine tourism accounting for 25 percent of Turkey’s tourism revenue, Bodrum’s thriving blue cruise sector remains a high-value industry, attracting visitors across various budgets and contributing substantial foreign currency to the nation.

Türkiye produces 92% of world’s pine honey

Türkiye, responsible for producing an impressive 92% of the world’s pine honey, continues to lead the way in honey production globally, Ziya Sahin, President of the Turkish Beekeepers Central Union, announced Friday. Speaking at the opening of the “Ordu Beekeeping and Bee Products Fair” in Yeni Ordu Stadium, Altinordu, Sahin highlighted Türkiye’s longstanding presence in international markets, particularly the European Union, which has imported Turkish pine honey for almost 40 years.

Türkiye ranks second worldwide in honey production and bee population, a testament to its robust beekeeping sector. “Türkiye stands out as the world’s only producer of pine honey,” Sahin said. Each year, approximately 15,000 to 20,000 tons of pine honey are exported globally, with the EU being a primary market.

Beyond pine honey, Türkiye has expanded its export of wax honey, primarily to Balkan and Arab countries, where annual exports reach 6,000-7,000 tons. “Türkiye is a paradise for honey,” Sahin stated, underscoring that Türkiye is a net exporter of honey products.

At the fair, Sahin called on consumers to seek reliable honey from branded, union-backed sources, highlighting a price discrepancy in the market that may indicate compromised quality. “We are disheartened to see honey sold as low as 50-100 liras,” Sahin said, adding that the cost of producing a kilogram of authentic honey is around 261 liras.

The fair, organized by the Ordu Beekeepers Union and featuring 28 companies from various provinces, underscores the importance of industry support in maintaining Türkiye’s global standing. Attendees, including Ordu Metropolitan Mayor Mehmet Hilmi Guler, interacted with beekeeping industry representatives, marking the event as a significant occasion for the sector.

As the fair concluded on Sunday, October 27, Türkiye’s position as a key player in the global honey industry, particularly with its unique pine honey production, continues to strengthen, driven by its commitment to quality and market expansion.

Erzurum’s Palandöken gearing up for busy ski season

The Palandöken Ski Resort in Erzurum, one of Türkiye’s premier winter sports destinations, is set to open its slopes earlier than anticipated, as a brisk autumn ushers in winter temperatures. Final preparations are underway at the resort, where officials are readying facilities for an influx of visitors keen to hit the slopes. Known for its sweeping mountain views and world-class winter sports amenities, the Palandöken district draws millions of sports enthusiasts each year.

In anticipation of another busy season, teams have worked through the summer to upgrade facilities, including chair lifts, gondolas, cable cars, ski tracks, and snow-making systems. With repairs and maintenance now complete, the resort awaits temperatures to fall to around -5°C, the ideal climate for opening ski tracks with both natural and artificial snow.

Last season, the resort set a record with nearly 3 million visitors, and with Erzurum designated the “European Winter Sports Capital” and Türkiye’s “tourism capital” for 2025, officials expect even higher turnout this year. Zafer Aynalı, Erzurum Municipality’s general secretary, shared that the region has already received its first snowfall, with artificial snow-making equipment on standby to enhance slope conditions.

“We store snow from the previous season, which we use as a foundational layer on ski tracks in late November, before applying a new layer of artificial snow,” explained Aynalı, noting that this unique approach enables the resort to open earlier than competitors.

Night skiing, a distinctive feature of Palandöken, also continues to be a popular draw, offering skiers the rare thrill of gliding down illuminated slopes. This year, Aynalı anticipates a record-breaking 4 million visitors, bolstered by Erzurum’s increasing appeal on both domestic and international levels.

As temperatures drop and the snow solidifies, Palandöken Ski Resort stands poised for an exhilarating season, promising guests a winter sports experience unlike any other in Türkiye.
