EIA process launched for Ayten Bay yacht docking project amid environmental concerns
The Muğla Provincial Directorate of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change has officially initiated the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process for a proposed yacht docking pier in Ayten Bay, one of Göcek’s most iconic bays and a prime spot along Türkiye’s renowned blue cruise route. As part of the EIA process, a public participation meeting will be held on Thursday, November 7, at Göcek Cultural Center, where local residents and environmentalists are invited to share their views.
Concerns have arisen over the environmental impact of the project. City Planner Birol Keski voiced strong objections, emphasizing that canceling the Ayten Bay Yacht Docking Pier and additional facilities is crucial for preserving the bay’s unique ecosystem. Keski highlighted the importance of safeguarding Ayten Bay’s rich flora, fauna, and marine biodiversity, which contribute to the coastal ecosystem’s balance and sustainable tourism. “This project threatens to exceed the carrying capacity of Göcek Bay, potentially harming both the ecosystem and marine tourism, which relies on the area’s unspoiled nature,” Keski stated.
Keski also warned that the project would restrict public access to Ayten Bay, which is currently enjoyed by locals and visitors alike for recreational activities such as swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking. “If realized, the project would close this beautiful bay to public use, which contradicts environmental values and planning principles,” he added.
While Fethiye Municipality approved the project in January 2023, citing no objections, Muğla Metropolitan Municipality declined to endorse it, pointing to various technical, environmental, and legal concerns. Environmentalists argue that the project’s cancellation is essential for protecting the bay’s natural heritage, ensuring public access to coastlines, and prioritizing sustainable tourism.
The EIA public meeting on November 7 will be a key opportunity for stakeholders to address these environmental and community concerns.

Cappadocia’s Pigeon Valley to open for nighttime tourism
The Culture and Tourism Minister, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, has announced that Cappadocia’s renowned Pigeon Valley, one of Central Anatolia’s most iconic sites, will now be accessible to visitors after dark. This move is part of Türkiye’s expanding “night museum” initiative, designed to give tourists a unique evening experience of the country’s historical and cultural treasures.
“We are making Cappadocia’s splendor everlasting in the 101st year of our Republic,” Minister Ersoy shared on X. “With its historical and scenic beauty, the Pigeon Valley, which stretches from Uçhisar to Göreme, will now welcome visitors at night, illuminated by the light of our Republic.”
Following a successful summer season, the night tourism project has already captivated visitors in regions such as Antalya, where sites like Alanya Castle, the ancient cities of Side, Aspendos, and Perge, and several archaeology museums opened their doors to nighttime visitors. This initiative not only provided a respite from the summer heat but also significantly increased attendance. Veysel Akın, a senior ministry official, reported that visitor numbers at certain ancient sites even surpassed daytime attendance.
The success in Cappadocia and Antalya has inspired similar plans in other historical locations. Sites like Troy in Çanakkale, Ephesus in İzmir, and Hierapolis in Denizli are also part of the program, providing a distinct nighttime experience for both locals and tourists and reinforcing Türkiye’s commitment to preserving and promoting its cultural heritage.

Haydarpaşa, Sirkeci stations set for cultural transformation by 2026
At a press conference at the Atatürk Cultural Center, Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy shared Türkiye’s strong third-quarter tourism results and outlined the government’s commitment to transforming Istanbul’s historic Haydarpaşa and Sirkeci train stations into cultural hubs.
Now under temporary Ministry control, both stations will be repurposed to include museums, art galleries, a performing arts center, and community spaces, while preserving their original architecture and rail operations. An expert consultancy board, featuring architects and cultural figures like Professor Dr. Luca Molinari and curator Beral Madra, is guiding the project to ensure these sites honor their heritage.
The initiative responds to Istanbul’s need for more cultural facilities, especially on the Anatolian side, with Ersoy envisioning the city as a bridge for Near Eastern, Middle Eastern, and European cultures. In tandem with these efforts, Türkiye raised its 2024 visitor target to 61 million, driven by high tourism demand and an increase in average visitor spending, which has boosted revenues to $46.9 billion for the first nine months, including a record-breaking $23.2 billion in the third quarter. The renovated cultural hubs are set to open in 2026, coinciding with the Istanbul Culture Route Festival, and will offer both locals and tourists a richer cultural experience.
