Magnitude 5.0 quake shakes Türkiye’s eastern Elazığ
A magnitude 5.0 earthquake shook Türkiye’s eastern Elazığ province and nearby regions on Friday, the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said.
The quake took place at a depth of 16.22 kilometers and was felt in the Diyarbakır province.
In a statement, Elazığ Governor’s Office said no damage has been reported to AFAD or the 112 emergency phone line, adding that authorities are closely monitoring the effects of the quake.
Elazığ was rocked by one of its worst disasters on Jan. 24, 2020, when a magnitude 6.8 earthquake rocked the city, along with its neighbor Malatya. A total of 41 people were killed in two eastern provinces and hundreds of others were injured in the catastrophe, whose epicenter was Elazığ’s Sivrice district.

Türkiye ready to add 5 new letters to alphabet, Erdoğan says
President Erdoğan has announced that Türkiye was ready to adopt the “Common Turkish Alphabet” project, which would include 34 letters with the addition of five new characters to the official alphabet.
Speaking in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Nov. 6 stated that Türkiye has been ready to adopt the 34-letter “Common Turkish Alphabet” project.
According to the alphabet model approved at the Common Alphabet Commission organized by the Turkish Academy and the Turkish Language Association in Azeri capital Baku last September, five letters—Q, X, W, Ň, and Ä—were planned to be added to the existing 29 letters of Türkiye’s official alphabet.
Erdoğan emphasized that the 34-letter alphabet, adopted through common consensus, would “unify the Turkic world.”
He noted that all member countries of the Organization of Turkic States should undergo an alphabet transformation, stating, “Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus are ready for this. It would be appropriate for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan to initiate the transition to the new alphabet.”

Nomads in Türkiye’s Northeast begin annual return to villages
With temperatures dropping in Türkiye’s northeastern highlands, nomadic families are embarking on their seasonal journey back to villages in Bayburt and Erzurum’s İspir district. After spending six months in high-altitude pastures of the Eastern Black Sea region, these families guide their herds across rugged, autumn-colored landscapes, navigating mountainous and forested paths.
Necdet Bıyıklı, a 65-year-old herder, began his journey two weeks ago from Ovit Mountain, planning to cross Zigana Mountain en route to Bayburt. Reflecting on the challenges posed by unpredictable weather and wildlife, Bıyıklı expressed determination, despite the early snow and added difficulties this year.
Fellow herder Serkan Çakır described the nomadic life as an enduring commitment, pursued only by those with a deep love for the lifestyle. Villagers along the route provide hospitality, adding warmth to the journey.
With 10-15 days remaining on this annual trek, the nomads’ return marks the close of summer and a transition to winter village life.

Istanbul, Antalya, İzmir rank among top 100 brand cities of 2024
The Turkish cities of Istanbul, Antalya, and İzmir have been recognized among the top 100 global “brand cities” in the “City Index 2024” by Brand Finance. This ranking assesses urban reputations through a comprehensive global survey of 15,000 respondents across 20 countries. The cities were evaluated based on seven primary categories and 45 subcategories, including business appeal, cultural heritage, education, governance, livability, sustainability, and international recognition.
The survey drew insights from respondents in diverse countries, such as the United States, Germany, China, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia.
In the overall ranking, London, New York, and Paris secured the top three spots, followed by Tokyo, Dubai, Singapore, Los Angeles, Sydney, San Francisco, and Amsterdam rounding out the top 10.
Among Turkish cities, Istanbul ranked 51st, climbing six positions from the previous year. Antalya and İzmir were ranked 93rd and 97th, respectively, highlighting their status as globally recognized cities.
On the “global preferability” scale, Istanbul ranked 62nd, with Antalya and İzmir again placing 93rd and 97th. Muhterem İlgüner, director of Brand Finance Türkiye, underscored the need for strategic initiatives to further elevate Türkiye’s international reputation.
“Given its historical and cultural significance, Istanbul’s ranking is fitting, yet effective brand management is essential to achieve higher standing,” İlgüner noted. “Strengthening Istanbul’s digital presence is crucial, especially with nearly 5 billion people active online.”
İlgüner also praised Antalya’s growing reputation as a tourism destination, attributing its rise in rankings to focused promotional efforts and strategic investments in tourism by the Turkish government.

Sapanca Lake’s water level hits 5-year low Türkiye’s Sakarya
The water level in Sapanca Lake, the primary drinking water source for Sakarya and Kocaeli, has dropped to 30.13 meters (98.85 feet) due to drought, marking its lowest level in five years. Factors such as high temperatures, insufficient summer rainfall, unsustainable irrigation practices, and illegal water use have contributed to widespread droughts impacting lakes, dams, and rivers across Türkiye.
Sapanca Lake, which serves over 3 million residents and is the Marmara region’s largest natural water source, has seen significant water loss. This has left many piers dry, stranded boats, and led to an 18-meter shoreline recession, endangering reed beds.
Data from Sakarya’s Water and Sewerage Administration (SASKI) show the lake’s maximum fill level at 32.20 meters, while recent levels have consistently declined year by year. Although the lake recovered after dropping to 29.64 meters in 2014, SASKI officials emphasize the need for water conservation as resources are not unlimited. Rainfall in the winter months is expected to help replenish the lake.
