Türkiye’s Lake Çıldır begins to freeze, attracts tourism

As winter descends upon Türkiye’s Kars-Ardahan border, Çıldır Lake, spreading across 123 square kilometers (76.43 square miles), reveals its enchanting icy facade, beckoning both national and international tourists.

Recently, ice layers have begun forming on the surface of Çıldır Lake, the Eastern Anatolia Region’s second-largest lake, following Lake Van.

The lake’s frozen expanse has commenced drawing visitors, particularly at Taşbaşı village in Arpaçay district, Kars.

Set against a backdrop of snowy-white surroundings, horse-drawn sleigh rides await eager citizens along the lake’s shore. These sleighs, primed and prepared in the Arpaçay district, anticipate the lake’s ice to thicken adequately before venturing onto it.

Launched in 2017 and held for the seventh time on 8-9 December this year with the theme “Thriving Together: Responsibilities, Actions and Solutions”, TRT World Forum 2023 was concluded. More than 150 speakers and more than one thousand participants from nearly 100 countries attended the forum, where global problems were discussed for two days.

10 public sessions and 8 roundtable meetings were held at the event, where regional and global issues were discussed in depth, proposals for possible solutions were presented and a basis of understanding was strengthened. Critical issues that concern the whole world, from global cooperation to leadership, from peace diplomacy to food security, from energy crisis to climate change, from migration to Islamophobia, from media and digitalization to disinformation, were taken up at the Forum, attended by more than 150 internationally renowned high-level speakers from different parts of the world.

On the first day of the TRT World Forum, one of the largest and most high-profile forums held in the media sector worldwide, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Director of Communications Fahrettin Altun, and TRT Director General Mehmet Zahid Sobacı delivered the inaugural speeches. At the opening ceremony, a short film was screened featuring a group of children representing children from regions most affected by war, conveying the search for the “key to peace” in the world. 8M saplings planted in Eastern Anatolia on Türkiye’s centennial

Under the banner of “Breath for the Future, Breath for the Republic” on the Republic’s centenary, substantial afforestation initiatives have taken root across the Eastern Anatolia Region. This year, a comprehensive drive has led to the planting of 8.15 million saplings, covering an expansive 6,870 hectares of steppe land in 8 provinces.

Initiated by the Elazığ Regional Directorate of Forestry, the “Breathing for the Future” campaign, launched in alignment with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s proclamation of November 11 as “National Afforestation Day” in 2019, has been instrumental in executing afforestation efforts in Elazığ, Malatya, Bingöl, Tunceli, Bitlis, Van, Hakkari and Muş.

The campaign has witnessed the cultivation of 86 diverse sapling species, comprised of cedar, oak, juniper, larch, ash, mahlep, aylantus, almond and walnut. These saplings have been nurtured within institution-run nursery directorates.

The targeted afforestation and erosion control areas spanning 6,870 hectares across the eight provinces have now been enriched by planting 8.15 million saplings. This initiative signifies a monumental step toward reclaiming and cultivating vast tracts of land for a greener, more sustainable future.

25,000 litres of bootleg liquor seized in ops across Türkiye

Minister of Internal Affairs Ali Yerlikaya announced Friday that 25,603 liters of smuggled and counterfeit alcohol and ethyl alcohol were seized in the ‘Çengel-4’ operations held simultaneously in 81 provinces, and legal action was taken against 189 culprits.

Sharing the insights of the operation on his social media account, Yerlikaya stated that operations codenamed ‘Çengel-4’ were carried out across the country to prevent the trade in bootleg alcohol.

During operations carried out under the coordination of the Anti-Smuggling and Organized Crime Directorate of the General Directorate of Security, with the participation of provincial police directorates and Revenue Administration personnel, 14 illegal distilleries were exposed.

Also, 8,310 bottles of illicit alcohol, 13,472 liters of bootleg liquor, 12,131 liters of ethyl alcohol, 1,704 empty bottles, 1,600 banderoles, 1,680 alcohol flavors and 68,121 labels were seized.

Legal proceedings were initiated against 189 people. As a result of the operations, the state’s tax loss of TL 25 million was prevented. Congratulating the teams participating in the operations, Yerlikaya said: “We are on the heels of smugglers and those involved in counterfeiting. We will not let them turn a blind eye.”

Meanwhile, earlier this week, 50 suspects involved in an illegal bootleg liquor ring were apprehended in an extensive operation conducted across Istanbul.

Investigators found that the detained individuals, who owned companies operating in the chemical and disinfectant sectors, were selling ethyl alcohol to producers of counterfeit alcohol. The suspects were using containers labeled with “surface cleaner” and “undrinkable” to distribute the ethyl alcohol.
