Day 2: Bayburt & Gümüşhane – Ancient Civilisations
Explore Bayburt Castle overlooking the Çoruh River, venture into the mysterious Aydıntepe Underground City and uncover the remains of a Roman legionary base at Satala. The day concludes in historic Süleymaniye, a former mining settlement shaped by different cultures.

Day 3: Gümüşhane & Trabzon – Lost Villages and Mountain Scenery
Step back in time in Santa, a protected historic settlement featuring more than 300 stone houses spread across seven neighbourhoods. Enjoy mountain landscapes and outdoor adventures before arriving in Trabzon.

Day 4: Trabzon – Caves, Waterfalls & Coastal Heritage
Visit Atatürk Pavilion, explore the fascinating underground world of Çal Cave, discover the forested Canikdere Waterfall and take in panoramic views from the Beşikdüzü Cable Car. The historic Girls’ Monastery completes this journey through the region’s rich heritage.

A journey inspired by ancient history
The route takes its name from Anabasis, the account by Greek writer Xenophon of the retreat of Greek mercenaries in 401 BC. Their legendary cry of “Thalassa, thalassa!” — meaning “The sea, the sea!” — echoed across the mountains when they finally caught sight of the Black Sea.
Today, that ancient story provides the inspiration for a modern adventure connecting some of Turkey’s lesser-known historical and natural treasures.
With travel agencies preparing package tours, the Anabasis Northern Route offers a new way to discover a side of Turkey that goes far beyond its famous coastal resorts.
