Electrical Infrastructure Work in Fethiye: Celal Bayar Street Closed to Traffic
FETHIYE, MUĞLA – Aydem Elektrik has begun electrical infrastructure works on Celal Bayar Street in Fethiye, leading to temporary traffic restrictions in the area.
The project aims to strengthen both street lighting systems and electricity distribution lines supplying homes and businesses along the route.
Due to the ongoing works, the section of Celal Bayar Street between the intersection with Öğretmenler Street and the traffic light junction with Yunus Nadi Street will remain closed to vehicle traffic until May 18, 2026.
Officials said the infrastructure reinforcement project is designed to improve the reliability and durability of the local electricity network, helping to provide stronger and more dependable energy services for residents.
Drivers travelling through the area have been advised to use alternative routes while the works are underway.
Fethiye Municipality Holds “We Overcome Obstacles in Disaster” Awareness Event
FETHIYE, MUĞLA – Fethiye Municipality continues its disaster awareness and inclusive education efforts under the theme “We Overcome Obstacles in Disaster.”
As part of activities marking World Disability Week, the municipality’s Disaster Affairs and Risk Management Directorate, together with the Fethiye MAG AME DER teams, organised a special awareness event focused on disaster preparedness and inclusion.
The “Disaster Awareness” event was hosted by Ramsa Group Institutions Fethiye Peer Academy Special Education and Rehabilitation Center and brought together children and their families for an informative and enjoyable day.
During the event, participants took part in interactive activities while also receiving practical training on the correct actions to take during a disaster or emergency situation. The programme aimed to raise awareness in an accessible and inclusive environment, helping children build confidence and preparedness skills in a supportive setting.
Fethiye Municipality stated that it will continue to organise projects and training programmes that strengthen disaster awareness across all sections of the community.

Akyaka Beach Sky Coloured with Kites at Accessible Festival
ULA, MUĞLA – Muğla Metropolitan Municipality organised its fourth Accessible Kite Festival on Akyaka Beach as part of Disability Awareness Week, bringing together 400 disabled individuals and their families for a colourful day of activities and entertainment.
Held in the Akyaka neighbourhood of Ula district, the festival once again transformed the beach into a vibrant scene as colourful kites filled the sky. The event highlighted unity, inclusion and community spirit, while offering participants an enjoyable and memorable experience.
Among those attending were Ahmet Aras, Mehmet Caner, General Secretary Tayfun Yılmaz, representatives from non-governmental organisations, disabled individuals and their families.
Members of the Short Break Centres operating in Menteşe, Milas, Fethiye, Marmaris, Bodrum, Datça, Yatağan and Ortaca districts also joined the festival.
Throughout the day, participants enjoyed a range of workshops, face painting activities and live musical performances alongside the kite-flying event. Families had the opportunity to socialise and spend quality time together in a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.
At the end of the programme, disabled individuals and their families were treated to a boat tour along the scenic Kadın Azmağı river, adding another memorable moment to the day’s celebrations.
Speaking at the event, Ahmet Aras said supporting families and disabled individuals remained a key priority for local government.
“First and foremost, one must have love for humanity within; this is the fundamental need of everything,” he said. “We do our work with sincerity and love. As local governments, we are obliged to make every effort and investment to support families; this is our duty.”
Aras also revealed plans for a new rehabilitation and training centre in Muğla, which he described as a first for the province. He said similar projects would also be expanded across all districts in the future.
“There is no more urgent task for us than this,” he added, before wishing everyone attending the festival an enjoyable day.

Fethiye to Celebrate May 19 Atatürk Commemoration, Youth and Sports Day with Concert
FETHIYE, MUĞLA – Fethiye Municipality is preparing to celebrate the May 19 Atatürk Commemoration, Youth and Sports Day with a lively programme of events, including a concert by popular Turkish music group Dolu Kadehi Ters Tut.
The band will perform at Beşkaza Square on Monday, May 18, following strong demand from young people in a public survey organised by the municipality. The concert is scheduled to begin at 21:00 and is expected to attract thousands of music lovers from across the region.
The municipality said the event aims to bring the community together to celebrate one of Turkey’s most significant national holidays, which honours Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, youth and the importance of sport.
Alim Karaca said the municipality was looking forward to marking the occasion with great enthusiasm and strong public participation.
In his announcement, Karaca invited all residents and visitors to join the celebrations and enjoy the special atmosphere planned for the evening.

MUSKİ Continues Infrastructure Works in Menteşe District
MENTEŞE, MUĞLA – Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Water and Sewerage Administration (MUSKİ) is continuing major infrastructure works in the Yeniköy, Ortaköy and Colleges Region of Emirbeyazıt neighbourhood in Menteşe district, areas which previously lacked sewerage infrastructure.
The project, launched to provide residents with healthier and more modern infrastructure services, includes the construction of both sewerage and drinking water networks across the region.
MUSKİ announced that works in the Colleges Region have now been completed, while teams continue sewerage line construction in Yeniköy neighbourhood. As part of the overall project, a total of 16,000 metres of sewerage network lines and 7,500 metres of drinking water lines will be installed.
Officials stated that once the works in Yeniköy are completed, teams will move on to Ortaköy neighbourhood to continue the next stage of the project.
The infrastructure investments are being carried out in line with the “Strong Infrastructure, Strong Muğla” vision introduced by Ahmet Aras.
Municipal officials said the works aim to improve living standards and strengthen infrastructure services throughout the province, helping residents benefit from safer and more reliable water and sewerage systems.

Intensive Mosquito Control Efforts Underway in Fethiye from Karagedik to Göcek
FETHIYE, MUĞLA – With the arrival of warmer weather and the approach of summer, Muğla Metropolitan Municipality has intensified mosquito and pest control operations across the Fethiye region.
Metropolitan Municipality teams are carrying out comprehensive spraying works in nine neighbourhoods stretching from Karagedik to Göcek, aiming to reduce mosquito populations and protect public health during the busy summer season.
The operations are being conducted by a specialised team of seven experts who are identifying and spraying mosquito breeding grounds one by one. Intensive efforts are focused particularly on stream beds, manholes, sewer systems, canal surroundings, septic tanks and areas where stagnant water collects.
Municipal teams warned residents to remain cautious about standing water around homes and businesses, especially due to the increasing presence of the Asian Tiger Mosquito in the region.
The Asian Tiger Mosquito is known for breeding rapidly in small amounts of stagnant water and for its aggressive daytime biting behaviour. Officials said public cooperation is vital in preventing mosquito reproduction and reducing the spread of the species.
The municipality stated that spraying and monitoring activities will continue throughout the summer months in order to improve living conditions for residents and visitors across Fethiye and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Rising Sea Temperatures Raise Climate Risk Warnings for Turkey
ISTANBUL – Sea surface temperatures approached record levels in April and could climb even higher if El Niño conditions develop later this year, increasing the risk of marine stress events, coastal flooding and storm surges, according to Cem Gazioğlu.
Speaking on recent global climate data, Gazioğlu warned that growing interaction between the oceans and atmosphere is intensifying extreme weather events both globally and across Turkey.
Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service showed that global average air temperatures in April reached 14.89°C, making it the third hottest April ever recorded. Sea surface temperatures outside the polar regions reached 21°C, the second-highest level on record, while Arctic sea ice coverage fell to its second-lowest April level.
Gazioğlu said oceans now play a central role in shaping climate extremes, with rising sea temperatures strengthening storms, extreme rainfall, heatwaves and drought conditions.
He warned that if El Niño develops strongly during 2026, new sea surface temperature records could be broken, increasing pressure on marine ecosystems and raising the risk of coastal flooding and storm surges.
The climate expert also highlighted visible impacts across Turkey, particularly along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, where warming seas are altering marine ecosystems and accelerating the spread of invasive species.
He added that flooding and landslides in the Black Sea region, mucilage in the Sea of Marmara and increasing urban flooding around Istanbul are all linked to changing climate and ocean conditions.
Gazioğlu described the Eastern Mediterranean as a global climate change “hot spot,” warning that warming seas could also increase the formation of powerful Mediterranean cyclones, known as “medicanes.”
He called for expanded climate monitoring systems and continuous ocean observation networks, saying traditional monitoring methods are no longer sufficient to track rapidly changing climate conditions.
