Scorching Heat in Fethiye as Temperatures Hit 41°C
Fethiye, MUĞLA – Fethiye is experiencing intense summer heat, with thermometers reaching 41 degrees Celsius, significantly impacting daily life across the district.
As temperatures peaked during the day, residents increasingly sought relief in shaded and cooler areas. Streets and main avenues saw noticeably reduced pedestrian activity during the hottest hours, particularly from midday onwards.
Squares, parks, and coastal zones became key refuge points, with demand rising for shaded seating areas and indoor spaces as people attempted to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
With Fethiye’s population swelling during the summer season, the extreme heat is expected to continue in the coming days.
Health experts are advising caution, especially for the elderly, young children, and those with chronic illnesses, recommending they avoid direct sunlight between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM, when temperatures are at their peak.
Chinese Delegation to Visit Fethiye in Boost for Tourism and Cultural Ties
Fethiye, MUĞLA – Fethiye is set to welcome a high-profile delegation from the People’s Republic of China on July 9-10, marking a significant step forward in the growing cultural and tourism partnership between the town and China.
Leading the delegation will be the Chinese Ambassador to Ankara, Jiang Xuebin, who will arrive with approximately 40 officials and guests for a two-day programme of official meetings and cultural events.
One of the key highlights of the visit will be the official unveiling of new Chinese-language road and direction signs across Fethiye. The initiative follows a decision unanimously approved by the Fethiye Municipal Council last year to improve accessibility for Chinese visitors.
The signs will be installed at major tourist attractions, historical sites and important visitor locations, making it easier for Chinese tourists to explore the area while reflecting Fethiye’s commitment to welcoming international visitors.
The cultural programme will culminate on the evening of July 9 with a special sound, music and light performance at Telmessos Ancient Theatre.
The show will be presented by 30 university students from Beijing, promising a memorable evening of artistic exchange for both residents and visitors. The performance is expected to add a vibrant Chinese cultural element to one of Fethiye’s most historic landmarks.
The visit marks the first official trip by a Chinese Ambassador to Fethiye, a milestone that local officials believe will strengthen the town’s international profile and open new opportunities for tourism.
Municipal representatives say the growing relationship with China is expected to expand through cultural diplomacy, sister-city initiatives and tourism collaborations, with a particular focus on attracting more visitors from the Chinese market.

Muğla MP Calls for Stronger Forest Fire Prevention Measures
As temperatures rise and the risk of wildfires increases, Muğla CHP MP Gizem Özcan has urged Turkey to prioritise prevention over response.
Speaking in the Grand National Assembly, Özcan highlighted the devastating impact of the 2021 and 2022 fires, which destroyed around 60,000 hectares of forest in Muğla, and called for permanent, science-based forestry policies.
Her proposals include:

🚒 Increasing forestry personnel and prioritising local residents in recruitment.
📚 Reintroducing fire training programmes for forest villagers, volunteers and local authorities.
⚡ Strengthening inspections of energy transmission lines to reduce fire risks.
✈️ Establishing a permanent national firefighting air fleet instead of relying on seasonal aircraft rentals.
Özcan stressed that protecting forests is essential for preserving wildlife, water resources, beekeeping and future generations, warning that action must be taken before the next fire season begins.

Locals from several neighbourhoods say fly populations have noticeably increased compared to previous years, making daily life increasingly difficult—particularly during the evening hours when mosquitoes and blackflies are most active.
Many residents have taken to social media to voice their concerns, urging local authorities to carry out more frequent and effective spraying programmes to reduce the impact on households and public spaces.
The issue is not limited to central areas, with similar complaints reported in rural neighbourhoods as well. Some residents argue that disinfestation operations, which they say were more consistent in previous years, appear to be less frequent this season.
As temperatures remain high, citizens are calling for a stronger and more coordinated response to tackle the seasonal surge in insect populations across the district.
Seagrass Protection Project Launched Across 20 Bays in Fethiye
Fethiye, MUĞLA – A new environmental initiative aimed at protecting seagrass meadows and preserving the region’s delicate marine ecosystem is being introduced across 20 bays in Fethiye.
The Mapa Buoy Project, launched by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, is designed to prevent damage caused by traditional anchoring methods, helping to conserve seagrass habitats that play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and supporting healthy coastal waters.
The project will be implemented in the following bays in the Göcek area of Fethiye: İnceburun, Osmanağa, Günlük-Atbükü, Boynuzbükü, Kille-Büyükova, Bedri Rahmi, Sıralı Bük, Sarsala, Hamam, Binlik, Martı, Merdivenli, Göbün, Domuz Adası, Tersane Adası, Zeytin Adası, Yassıca Ada, Göcek Adası, Göcek East and Göcek Center.
By installing environmentally friendly mooring buoys, the initiative aims to reduce anchor damage to underwater seagrass meadows, which provide important habitats for marine life, improve water quality and help capture carbon from the atmosphere.
The project forms part of wider efforts to protect Fethiye’s unique coastal environment while supporting sustainable tourism and the long-term health of the region’s marine ecosystems.

Tekirdağ’s vast lavender fields draw day-trippers
TEKİRDAĞ, TURKEY – Vast lavender fields in the Süleymanpaşa district of Tekirdağ are drawing increasing numbers of visitors this summer, with day-trippers—particularly from nearby Istanbul—flocking to the scenic countryside.
The blooming fields, now a key seasonal attraction, have transformed the area into a vibrant sea of purple, offering visitors a peaceful escape from urban life. Nature lovers, photographers and families are among those making the journey to capture the striking landscapes during peak bloom.
Often referred to as “purple tourism,” the growing interest in lavender fields has boosted rural tourism in the region, highlighting Tekirdağ’s natural beauty and expanding its appeal as a summer destination.
Local operator Kamil Turgut said visitor numbers have been especially strong this season, with steady arrivals from Istanbul and surrounding provinces. He noted that the peak visiting period lasts until the end of July, after which harvesting begins for lavender oil production.
Beyond tourism, the lavender fields also support agricultural activity, contributing to the production of essential oils and related products.
With the season expected to continue for several more weeks, the Süleymanpaşa fields are set to welcome thousands more visitors, further cementing Tekirdağ’s reputation as a popular countryside escape for summer day trips.

Zero Waste Exhibition Encourages Sustainable Living in Istanbul
ISTANBUL, TURKEY – A new interactive exhibition in Taksim Square is promoting sustainable living and responsible consumption as part of Türkiye’s internationally recognised Zero Waste Initiative.
The “Zero Waste for a Sustainable Future” exhibition, organised by the Zero Waste Foundation, features immersive and educational displays focused on waste management, circular economy practices, and environmental sustainability.
Held under the auspices of Emine Erdoğan, the initiative aims to raise awareness about reducing waste and protecting natural resources for future generations.
Istanbul Governor Davut Gül highlighted growing public engagement with environmental issues, pointing to the success of Istanbul’s Zero Waste Week, which included more than 1,500 events and attracted around 1.5 million participants.
A key focus of the exhibition is global food waste, with organisers noting that over 1 billion meals are discarded daily worldwide despite ongoing hunger challenges. The exhibition addresses the issue through interactive data, multimedia installations, and practical guidance on reducing household waste.
Visitors can explore themed sections such as the “Welcome Room” and “Infinity Room,” covering topics from agriculture and industry to climate action. The experience also encourages participation in a Zero Waste Declaration.
Organisers say the exhibition reflects the broader evolution of the Zero Waste Movement from a national initiative into a global sustainability platform.
The exhibition will remain open in Taksim Square until mid next month, welcoming both residents and tourists.
