Fethiye Sees Significant Urban Growth Over Six Years
Fethiye, Muğla: Satellite imagery comparing Fethiye in 2020 and 2026 shows significant changes in urban development, with construction accelerating in some neighbourhoods while others have seen more limited growth or increased green space.
The most noticeable increases in building density are in Karaçulha and Akarca, where areas that were relatively sparsely developed in 2020 have become more densely built-up. Residential expansion is also evident in Kargı and Esenköy.
By contrast, parts of Eldirek and Çatalarık appear to have become greener, highlighting the differing pace and nature of development across the district.
The changes coincide with substantial population growth. According to Turkish Statistical Institute data, Fethiye’s population increased from 167,114 in 2020 to 182,280 in 2024 and 187,332 in 2025 — an increase of more than 20,000 people over five years.
Tourism-oriented rentals are also contributing to housing demand. Approximately 8,000 homes in the district are reportedly used for tourism rentals, including 4,213 with Tourism Rental Permits.
Development in Karaçulha has also been accompanied by changes to zoning plans. Fethiye Municipality announced amendments to provisions of the 1/1,000-scale Implementation Zoning Plan for the neighbourhood in January 2025, while further amendments to 1/5,000 and 1/1,000-scale plans for certain parcels were included in Muğla Metropolitan Municipality’s 2026 council commission reports.
The satellite comparison therefore presents a mixed picture of Fethiye’s transformation. While some neighbourhoods are experiencing rapid construction and residential expansion, other areas show increased greenery, underlining that urban growth is occurring at different rates and through different patterns across the district.

Wild Boars Spotted on Fethiye Peninsula During Daytime Foraging
Fethiye, Muğla — Wild boars, a familiar part of the local wildlife, were spotted in Fethiye’s Peninsula area during the daytime as they searched for food and water.
The animals attracted the attention of onlookers during their brief visit to the area, wandering around for a while before disappearing from sight. Their unusual daytime appearance provided a striking reminder of how close Fethiye’s natural environment is to urban areas.
The encounter was captured on mobile phone cameras, creating a series of memorable images as wildlife crossed paths with the city.
Residents and visitors are reminded not to approach or feed wild animals and to keep a safe distance if they encounter them.
The sighting also highlights Fethiye’s rich natural environment, where wildlife can be found alongside the region’s famous bays, forests and turquoise coastline.
Palm Tree Maintenance Underway Along Atatürk Avenue in Fethiye
Fethiye, Muğla – Teams from the Fethiye Municipality Parks and Gardens Directorate are carrying out pruning and maintenance work on the palm trees lining Atatürk Avenue.
As part of the ongoing work, dried and ageing fronds are being removed from the tall palm trees along the avenue and central medians. The maintenance is intended to improve the appearance of the trees while supporting their healthy growth.
The pruning also contributes to public safety by helping to prevent dried or damaged fronds from falling into areas used by pedestrians and motorists.
The municipal teams will continue maintenance work to keep the city’s streets and green spaces well maintained and attractive.

7-Kilometre Çiftlik-Yeniköy Connecting Road Renovated
Menteşe, Muğla: The 7-kilometre Çiftlik-Yeniköy (Yerkesik) connecting road has been completely renovated, improving transport links in the area.
Menteşe Mayor Gonca Köksal Aras inspected the completed works, which included roadbed preparations carried out by Menteşe Municipality teams and surface asphalt paving completed in cooperation with Muğla Metropolitan Municipality.
Mayor Aras said the renovated road has shortened travel distances and made journeys in the region more comfortable.
“Today, we inspected the 7-kilometre Çiftlik-Yeniköy (Yerkesik) connecting road, which we have completely renovated. We rapidly finished the roadbed preparations with our teams and applied the surface asphalt together with our Metropolitan Municipality; this road has already shortened distances and made travel much more comfortable.”
During his visit, Mayor Aras also inspected planned afforestation and landscaping works in the Colleges District. The projects aim to increase green spaces and contribute to a more pleasant and liveable environment for residents.

Main Water Transmission Line Bursts in Bodrum
Bodrum, Muğla: A burst occurred on the main water transmission line in the Demirbükü locality of Gölköy neighbourhood in Bodrum, causing large quantities of water to flood the area.
The incident occurred in the evening, creating a large crater as water escaped from the damaged pipeline. Gendarmerie teams attended the scene and took safety measures, while traffic was managed under controlled conditions using a single lane.
Following the incident, teams from the Muğla Water and Sewerage Administration (MUSKİ) shut off the affected line and began preparations for repair work, which is expected to continue through the night.
In a statement, MUSKİ said the fault occurred on an old GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) main transmission line and confirmed that teams had immediately intervened.
MUSKİ said the line would be returned to service once repairs were completed and that there would be no prolonged water outage, with uninterrupted supply expected to resume during the morning.
The utility also noted that ductile iron pipes installed in Bodrum have not experienced similar problems to date. MUSKİ said a tender has been awarded to prevent further bursts on the northern transmission line, with a further 21-kilometre section scheduled to be renewed using ductile iron pipes.

‘Musical Fethiye Evenings’ Concludes After a Summer of Live Music
Fethiye, Muğla: The Fethiye Municipality’s ‘Musical Fethiye Evenings’ series has concluded after bringing live music to different parts of the city throughout the summer.
The final event was held at Bahriye Üçok Park, marking the end of a programme that began on July 6 and offered free musical performances to the public three days a week.
Municipal artists and the City Orchestra performed at venues across Fethiye, adding music and entertainment to summer evenings and providing residents and visitors with opportunities to enjoy live performances close to home.
The summer programme brought together audiences of all ages and helped create a lively atmosphere across the city’s parks and public spaces.
Call for National Park Status for Latmos Mountains
Milas, Muğla: Calls have been made for the Latmos (Beşparmak) Mountains, which extend into the Milas district, to be designated as a national park to protect the area’s exceptional natural and cultural heritage.
Located north of Lake Bafa as an extension of the Western Menteşe Mountains, Latmos is home to 388 plant species, including 16 endemic species, and 180 bird species, alongside reptiles, amphibians and mammals.
The region also has a rich archaeological heritage dating back thousands of years. Prehistoric rock paintings discovered in 1994 are among its most significant cultural assets, while ancient stone roads, Byzantine fortresses and defensive structures, settlements, monasteries and rock frescoes are also found throughout the area.
Bahattin Sürücü, President of EKODOSD, said Latmos should be granted national park status to safeguard its natural and cultural values. He noted that experts from the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks carried out field surveys and boundary determination work in the region in November 2025.
Sürücü called for the process to be completed and urged ministries, local authorities, political parties and civil society organisations to support the initiative, describing national park status as essential for protecting Latmos’s natural environment, cultural heritage and local communities.
