Missing Worker Found Dead in Fethiye
FETHIYE, MUĞLA – A man who had been reported missing in Fethiye has been found dead in the Ölüdeniz neighbourhood, authorities have confirmed.
The incident occurred in Ölüdeniz, one of Fethiye’s most popular tourist areas. Citizens discovered Ercan Güncü lying motionless and immediately alerted the emergency services. Following the report, gendarmerie and medical teams were dispatched to the scene.
Medical personnel who arrived at the scene carried out initial examinations and determined that Güncü had died. Gendarmerie officers secured the area and launched a detailed investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
Güncü’s body was transferred to the forensic medicine institute, where an autopsy will be carried out to determine the exact cause of death.
According to available information, Ercan Güncü was originally from Adıyaman and had been working in the Ölüdeniz area. He was married and the father of three children.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

Loggerhead Turtle Alert on Çalış Beach: 819,000 TL Fine for Loud Music Broadcasts
FETHIYE, MUĞLA – Strict measures have been introduced on Fethiye’s Çalış and Koca Çalış beaches to protect nesting and hatching loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta), with businesses facing fines of up to 819,000 TL for violating noise restrictions.
As part of the regulations in force during the nesting season, loud music broadcasts are prohibited between 8pm and 8am from 15 May to 15 September. The ban applies to both live music performances and recorded music played through loudspeakers at businesses operating along the beaches.
The measures have been implemented to safeguard the breeding and hatching process of the endangered sea turtles, which return to the beaches each year to lay their eggs.
According to officials, the decision was taken by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change, while enforcement and inspections will be carried out by Fethiye Municipality.
Authorities have urged businesses to comply with the regulations, warning that excessive noise and artificial lighting during the evening hours can disrupt the natural behaviour and habitat of loggerhead turtles.
Businesses found to be broadcasting music after the permitted hours will face administrative fines totalling 819,000 TL.
Inspections are expected to continue throughout the nesting season on Çalış and Koca Çalış beaches, which host hundreds of loggerhead turtle nests each year and are considered among the region’s most important breeding grounds for the species.

‘My Budget, My Fethiye’ Initiative Launched to Boost Citizen Participation
FETHIYE, MUĞLA – Fethiye Municipality has launched the “My Budget, My Fethiye” Participatory Budget initiative, providing residents with an opportunity to play a direct role in shaping the future of the district by submitting project proposals.
The initiative aims to strengthen citizen participation in local decision-making by creating a platform where residents can share ideas and projects that contribute to the development of Fethiye.
The first phase of the programme will focus on the theme of “Clean Fethiye,” with project submissions centred on improving cleanliness and environmental quality across the district.
Projects submitted through the online platform will be reviewed by expert municipal teams. Following the evaluation process, shortlisted projects will be presented for public voting, allowing residents to help determine which proposals move forward.
Municipal officials stated that the implementation process of selected projects can also be monitored through the same platform, ensuring transparency and public involvement at every stage.

As part of these efforts, representatives from Fethiye attended the 46th Velo-city 2026 Conference held in Rimini, Italy, where they promoted both the district and Turkey on an international platform.
During the conference, participants were introduced to Fethiye’s Ancient Pedal routes, which combine natural beauty, historical heritage, and unique sea views. The delegation also highlighted the unifying power of cycling and its contribution to sustainable tourism.
Municipal officials stated that work will continue to encourage greater bicycle use in Fethiye, support sustainable transportation, and further develop the district’s bicycle tourism potential, helping to attract visitors throughout all 12 months of the year.

Fire Breaks Out on Baha Şıkman Street in Fethiye
FETHIYE, MUĞLA – A fire that broke out in an area formerly used as a prison on Baha Şıkman Street in the Taşyaka neighbourhood of Fethiye caused brief concern among local residents on Friday.
The blaze started for reasons that have not yet been determined. After noticing the fire, citizens alerted the emergency services, prompting the rapid deployment of fire crews to the scene.
Firefighters arrived quickly and carried out intensive operations to prevent the flames from spreading to surrounding areas. Thanks to the swift and coordinated response of the teams, the fire was brought under control and completely extinguished within a short time.
Although the incident caused temporary concern in the neighbourhood, authorities confirmed that there were no casualties or injuries.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire. Officials stated that technical examinations are ongoing and that the exact cause will be clarified once the investigation has been completed.

Antalya’s Famous Carpet Fields Open for the Summer Season
DÖŞEMEALTI, ANTALYA – The colourful carpet fields of Antalya’s Döşemealtı district have reopened for the summer season, transforming vast agricultural lands into a striking patchwork of patterns and colours as thousands of handwoven rugs are laid out under the Mediterranean sun.
The annual tradition, which has become one of the region’s most recognisable sights, sees valuable handmade carpets from across Turkey spread across open fields to be naturally sanitised, cured and prepared for export to international markets.
Many of the carpets, woven using traditional techniques and dyed with natural plant-based pigments, are exposed to Antalya’s unique climatic conditions. The combination of strong sunlight, warm temperatures and overnight humidity helps revive colours, preserve quality and create the soft, faded appearance highly sought after by collectors and buyers.
This year’s season started later than normal following higher-than-average rainfall during the winter and spring months. Workers have spent recent weeks preparing the fields, ploughing the land and readying thousands of carpets for the drying process.
As temperatures continue to rise, carpets are being laid out across the fields where they will remain under the sun for weeks. The natural process disinfects the rugs while enhancing their appearance before they are packaged and shipped overseas.
The carpets arriving in Döşemealtı are sourced from across Turkey and occasionally from neighbouring countries. Among them are traditional Turkish Hereke rugs as well as rare antique pieces, some more than a century old.
Many of these handwoven carpets can be worth thousands of dollars and attract significant interest from collectors in Europe and the United States, where demand for naturally aged and restored rugs remains strong.
Carpet trader Deniz Ali Topkara said Antalya’s climate makes the region one of the best locations for the process.
“The humidity that forms at night and the morning sun create ideal conditions for carpets,” he said. “This helps revive the colours and gives them the desired faded effect. Antalya is one of the best places for this process.”
Topkara noted that only valuable handwoven carpets dyed with natural root-based pigments are placed in the fields.
“Machine-made carpets are not laid out here,” he said. “For this method to work, the carpets must be woven with natural dyes. Most of the rugs we process are highly valuable, handmade pieces.”
The colourful fields are expected to remain a prominent feature of the Döşemealtı landscape throughout the summer as thousands of carpets undergo the traditional sun-curing process before being exported around the world.
