Gaziantep Airport is situated approximately 20 km from the city centre and operates regular domestic flights from all major Turkish cities throughout the year.
The 2023 Earthquake and Its Impact on Gaziantep
In February 2023, Gaziantep was impacted by the devastating Turkey–Syria earthquake. While three of the four strongest earthquakes struck within Gaziantep Province, the damage in the city itself was less severe than in provinces such as Kahramanmaraş, Hatay, Malatya and Adıyaman. Across the province, 944 buildings collapsed, with the worst destruction reported in the rural districts of Nurdağı and Islahiye. Several historic landmarks, including mosques and Gaziantep Castle, also suffered significant damage. Owing to its strategic location, size and comparatively intact infrastructure, Gaziantep later became a key regional base for international organisations and NGOs involved in earthquake relief and reconstruction efforts.
